I was thinking exactly the same thing. At times, when this occurs I claim to be doing it for a student project. Better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission!
There's no doubt guerilla styled shoots are a necessity in LA. I used to do it a lot more when I was younger. If you watch the DVD extras on "The Social Network" you can hear David Fincher talk about bogarting some shots near Harvard, and that's a major motion picture and he still had to circumvent the rules. But that type of energy tho dude was giving, it can ruin a shoot if you don't handle it well like you did. It makes the model nervous and puts everyone on edge.
3:16 Oh I love to answer. Every time I adjusted my shoot in post processing I wanted it to look like a film, however, more than the looks it's the joy that shooting film brings is the reason I still shoot film.
Props to you for staying calm and respectful. I’ve been there and it’s nothing worse than when you find the perfect location and security or someone boots you out. Glad you got the shots 🙌🏿
Photos were great but you have to admit that you also had killer video b-roll on this one. Props to your video partner! And as you know by now, getting kicked out of shooting locations is part of the game!
I am always AMAZED at how UA-cam photographers consistently find empty or near empty locations to shoot in........especially in (or near) major cities and metro areas. I don't shoot models, just the locations themselves, and it's super rare that I can find locations without people.........unless it's near dawn or after midnight.
Man I have no idea how I have not found your channel until now. Your passion for film photography is amazing! I’ve been doing this probably longer than you’ve been alive, and it always just makes me so happy to see a young person with your skill and passion. Keep that shit up! And… handled that like a boss! 😂
love the realism and authenticity because run & gun shoots really do be like this almost half the time! Owners & Karens always come in so hostile but sometimes you can't blame them because they don't understand the situation and harmlessness
You turned that confrontation around remarkably well and the shots you got speak for themselves. Re your wrap-up questions: I'm a Pentax 645Z digital shooter (since 2015) but I'm here at your channel because I'm dabbling with film and I dig your style. The 645 takes 67 lenses and I have been enjoying the 67 105mm/2.4 on it for my most recent shoots. I love the format myself and have no reason to shift away. Speaking of pushing and pulling: the 645Z gives me tons of exposure latitude that I take full advantage of. I don't mind at all dragging up shadows 2 or 3 stops and giving me some texture and grain. Cheers, Mike!
Recently upgraded to the Mamiya 645 1000s and I'm never looking back! Well, except when I can only time with my Contax TVS. And I'll never be able to replace my Minolta X700 ❤️❤️❤️
my mentor always told me that is easier to say sorry than to ask for permission. like the work by the way. also ive learned through the years that if you apply the same format in digital you dont really need to process images. my goal is to get everything done on the spot making sure subject is lit up well either with artificial light or direct sunlight while using reflectors.
I love how this video is shot, very simple, cinematic and intimate. It's great long form work and feels totally real. Can't wait to see what you produce in the future. It's less frequent, but the production quality is incredible.
Coming from a 503CW, RZ67 Pro II, Mamiya 6 II user, The Mamiya 645 AFD with the 80mm 1.9N (always Manual) is one of 3 645's I've used, and it's amazing. Different grip, different vibe than any of the others... love it
Last time I did a laundromat shoot, had lots of onlookers, but no threats of violence. LOL. She is as cool as the day is long. Must be a pleasure to work with.
Used to own a Pentax 645N, Pentax 6x7, Mamiya RB67...sold them all and only kept my Mamiya C220 as it is such a radically different shooting format over digital that it provides the right balance of weight, challenge (square format and TLR), and quality results.
Man I absolutely love that you showed the photographer's reality and struggle sometimes with shooting at some sites that we see perfectly matching our vision. You got lucky on that one and that makes that shot even more precious and memorable. Love your work and love from Shanghai. Charles
Handled really well..kudos to you. Loved the entire video..more like this please! The owner was really a teddy bear..would be great for you to go back and get another set of pictures, with his permission!.. and of course, get another video. When I shot film in the '70's and '80's, I generally pushed film for lower light shooting..didn't really pull film. Nowadays, I either stretch or crush pixels from my H6! Best wishes, I always look forward to your videos, David in the UK.
I usually only push my film if it's necessary to get the shot under the available conditions. What I do often though is I shoot portra 400 at ISO 320 and portra 160 and ISO 100 and then I develop it for the normal amount of time. Pushing portra a stop can give it some interesting saturation almost like a slide film though so it can be fun to do that for landscapes and such where you might want some exaggerated colors but I prefer the look of it slightly overexposed.
My brother and I make short films and we've run into the same situation a couple times. You handled it real well. Also. Definitely looking forward to the show and bts video.
This has happened to me before in Chinatown. Good for you for hustling and going back for the second try. Really love the improvisation and determination to make things work. PS. 645 gang (Mamiya). But to be honest haven't shot with it for while.

Just goes to show, when faced with confrontation with hot headed individuals, remaining calm and allowing folks the space to calm down, as well as maintaining charm, is the solution to resolving conflict, even with the most stubborn individuals. Awesome vid, man. I just discovered you, and this was a very entertaining video on how shit can happen, but how it's still possible to flip the table. I bet Tumorrow was pretty impressed by how you handled the situation ! Looking forward for your next collab, you 2 look like charming chaps. About forgiveness, not permission, let me tell you a funny story that happened to me when I lived in Taiwan. I had started street photography a few years ago, shooting on Fuji X-T20, so not film, but the Fuji cameras are doing a great job at emulating the look of the cameras of old as much as their film simulation, especially if you slap some vintage lens adapted to the mount. One evening, I was in one of my favorite night markets, taking some nice shots all over the place. Comes a pretty girl in my viewfinder, so I do take a couple shots of her. She notices me, seemingly unhappy, so as a good street photographer, I start shooting something else, then move on and don't think about it anymore. Past a few minutes later, I had already walked to another neighbouring street, when I saw her again on a scooter, this time with apparently her boyfriend. The guy points his finger at me, while asking something to her (something like, "is that him ?" to which she nods positively). He comes down from the scooter menacingly, a glass bottle in hand, apparently ready to have a bout with me. He gets closer and closer, while I don't move, standing my ground. Strangely enough, I'm actualy pretty still and calm throughout the whole time, even slightly amused by that little man that seems so nervous for just a few photos. When he arrives in front of me, he angrily asks me if I shot pictures of his girlfriend. "Yes" (replied in a very calm and natural way, with a slight little friendly smile and one raised eyebrow) The dude froze, his brain apparently bugging because of the natural tone of my answer, as if it was the most natural and honest thing to say. "Uuuh... and... soo... why did you shoot her ?" "Because she looks beautiful, and I'm a photographer, so I take pictures of beautiful things and people. And by the way, you look quite handsome yourself, do you want me to take a pic of you ?" I said pointing at him, with a wink. The guy starts retreating a few steps, baffled "uuuh... and who would want a picture from you ???" and goes off to get back on his scooter with her girlfriend who was not understanding what just happened, and they both leave the scene. I had my poker face all the time, but inside, I was dying of laughter on how the situation unraveled. It could have gone one of 2 ways, and with my blunt honesty, it went the 3rd ! Morality : sometimes, being bluntly honest, but polite, with a tinge of good humor can really get you out of a pinch.
Loved the video! Youre my inspiration. Just started photography a few months ago and your videos help me get up and go out to take pics! I just bought a Mamiya 645 Pro that i absolutely love. You should try it out before buying though. Keep it up! Much love.
When I was your age I chose Hasselblad, but Pentax for 35mm. Funny how much love I feel from this, like reliving it once again. Nice pictures, greater attitude. Model: fantastic! Oh BTW pushing colour film doesn't do much, not really worth it. Yet B&W yes huge difference. If you are scanning rather than printing, a dense negative will present lots of problems. Printing colour negs supports 3 or more stops of overexposure, so if printing just over expose. IF you don't have enough light for the situation pushing a thin negative gets you no where, that is for B&W.
Loved this video so much, inspiration as always. Been shooting on the trusty Pentax 67 and Yashica T3 for the moment with a bit of Polaroid 600 in there for good measure. Such a pleasure to see you grow and evolve in your work, can't wait for the chance to own a copy of that book! Peace from the UK x
Loved the video! Like a breath of fresh air sitting here in quarantine, thanks so much for that.. Prior to getting Covid I've been taking my Canon P basically everywhere, HP5 inside, perfect for almost any situation (shooting either at 400 or 1600). And that camera just feels so unobtrusive with the 1x magnification, simple, yet precise.
Great Job, man. I found you, such a warm guy! I think you are not a photographer. You are a photography story teller!!! I do not know if I say so bother you. But I love the video and the photos by you, especially the beginning"what's up,guys?......".Very warm, warm my heart my eyes. I love this, keep going on!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!! ❤❤❤

Hey man,
I really liked the Look of the Highlights from your Video!
I was wondering with filter your camerman uses.
keep it up✌️
Hey Jan! I use a Nisi Black Mist 1/8 filter which gives that nice glow in the highlights 👌

Thanks for the answer✌️
@@janweber1699 No problem!
Thanks a lot!
Just binged on your videos, and the talent is undeniable. Can’t wait to see what this year and years to come have in store for you!
Thank you.
Seriously don’t get how good your scans look! Have you done a video on your post-shooting process, do you develope and scan yourself?
