The God Makers is an anti-Mormon documentary from 1982 with an infamous animated segment that rakes Mormonism across the coals. Is it deserving? Is what the documentary claims true?

I’m a Latter-day Saint, and while I haven’t watched the video yet, I am familiar with your channel and very familiar with the Godmakers.
It’s sad that people get their impressions of us from propaganda like this without ever realizing the intense bigotry we’ve been subjected to throughout history-a bigotry that remains largely socially encouraged even today.
So I’m glad that more people are becoming more aware of these things and re-examining their prejudices.

So my girlfriend was born and raised Mormon. The planet thing- was definitely something that was taught. She was taught as a kid that she would have her own planet to rule over. It even gave her anxiety because she didn’t want that kind of power.
She’s 30 so it was definitely taught in more recently times. Just wanted to put in her perspective in this, she left the church 7 years ago but the majority family is still in the church.

    • @MorgenPeschke
      @MorgenPeschke Рік тому +164

That's something I find deeply funny about this whole thing - "get your own planet" is a wild simplification, and the actual doctrine sounds so much more out there.
Basically, take the fairly mainstream idea of deification to its logical conclusion in the context of other LDS beliefs.
The thought process goes like this:
      1. Everyone existed before birth as a child of God (core LDS belief).
      2. We can become as God is (logical conclusion of deification).
      3. God made the Earth for us (mainstream Christan belief).
      4. By 1 and 2, it follows that we'll have children that'll have the capability to also become like God.
      5. By 2 and 3, it follows that we'll probably need to make planets for them to live on, and by then, we will have the capability to do so.
So less of a "we'll be given a planet to rule over," and more, "we'll need to build a planet ourselves at some point."
Source: I was raised in the Church, and this was pretty standard doctrine once you graduated from the simplified stuff taught to the Primary kids.

@@MorgenPeschke There’s a very deep rabbit hole to go down if you want to learn the history behind it, too. It starts with the King Follett discourse, where Joseph Smith gave a sermon at this guy’s funeral and basically was like, “Don’t worry guys. He’s dead, but know he gets to become a God and also God used to be human like us before he became a God.” Which like…is a pretty wild theological bomb to drop at a guys funeral when no one has ever heard of it before.
Fast forward to Brigham Young who starts teaching that Adam is the god of our world and that Elohim, Jehova and Michael (who are also God, Jesus and Adam respectively) form a Father, Son and Grandson relationship. His take on this is really convoluted, but my understanding is that essentially to become a god, you have to personally go through all three roles. He adds parts of this to the temple ceremony because before Joseph’s death, he told Young that the temple ceremony wasn’t quite finished yet and it was Young’s job to complete it.
Parley Pratt and John Taylor hate this anew doctrine. Pratt and Young argue over it over the pulpit in General Conferences. Young would get up and talk for hours and then Pratt would get up and say, “Everything Brother Brigham told you is wrong” and spend an equal amount of time disproving it. When Young dies and Taylor takes over they remove all references to it. If it weren’t for detailed journals of various members at the time, all info around it would probably be lost.
After that, there’s a lot of back and forth on how literal it gets interpreted, which is probably why you can take a group of Mormons and ask them about it and you’ll get a wide variety of responses. There’s a direct theological line from Joseph Smith -> Joseph F. Smith -> Joseph Fielding Smith -> Bruce R. McConkie, who are very attached to this idea, largely because of the familial tie to its lineage. But then you have others who don’t like it as much because it’s a bit more distant from standard Christianity, and especially after 1920 and the abandonment of polygamy, many in the church were desperately seeking acceptance from mainstream America, especially when you start looking into Utah become a state and the Reed Smoot hearings, etc.
Mormonism is way more interesting after you leave the church because there’s this crazy history that no one in the church wants to talk about.

*Mormon missionaries are not out sharing the message of the grace of Jesus Christ. They are selling spiritual bondage to the Mormon Church,* claiming they are the one true church and everyone needs to join. The Mormon' so-called restored gospel is an endless To-Do-List of requirements mandated by them including paying 10% of your total income, so you can get a Temple Recommend from a Mormon bishop, so you may participate in a Temple Endowment Rituals, perform baptism of the dead rituals, which includes, giving Masonic type handshakes, saying secret passwords, wearing underwear with sewn in Masonic symbols, and do much more. All so you possibly, maybe, perhaps, have eternal life, becoming a Mormon polygamist exalted man god or his goddess wife.
Where as the Bible and Christian message is to have forgiveness of sin and God’s gift of eternal life in the presence of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, is through faith and trust in Jesus Christ only and not through any church.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23)
“For the wages of sin is death; but THE GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE THROUGH JESUS CHRIST our Lord” (Romans 6:23)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is *the gift of God:* Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2: 8-9)
Jesus said, “…know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)

Hi friend, I'm a practicing Latter-day Saint, and would like to pop in on this.
First of all, the LDS Church has had a bad history with racism and rather twisted attempts to justify racism with intentional misreadings of scriptures.
Once all the stupid old racists finally died off, we've tried to reconcile with our past and stamp down on racism. The Book of Mormon literally says "[H]e inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.
I'm sorry if you ever experienced any racism from those who should have been your friends, but I can assure you, that is strictly against Church (and especially Jesus') teachings.
With regards to skin color and "cursing", well... It's awkward. The Book of Mormon claims to be a historical record of people who lived in the Americas from ~600BC - ~400BCE, and broke into (at least) 2 separate nations which were constantly at war. The "good guys" which were the purported authors of the book, would have seen the "bad guys" as bad, and any differences between them to be proof of such. Thus, ancient racism which got packages neatly in a religious text (similar to how the ancient Israelites viewed the Canaanites or Philistines).
Doesn't make it okay, obviously, but it's pretty clear if you actually read the Book of Mormon that any physical differences between the two peoples was superficial and not super important. Some of the "bad super cursed guys" converted and gave up on the whole "genocide the other group" mentality and it said they were more blessed and more righteous than the original "good guy" group. Thus, whatever skin color you have is meaningless, any "curse" someone has is just their distance from God and His commandments, not their skin color. Don't like the direction you're going in life? Turn to God and He'll help you out. Boom, uncursed.
Hopefully this rambling made sense. As someone who served a mission, it can get pretty lonely, so you might want to write/email your friend and ask them directly about their thoughts on the matter. Have a great life!

Anyway, they technically do still practice “polygamy” to an extent… an “eternal polygamy”. If a man’s wife dies, he can remarry while still being sealed to her and still be sealed to his new wife (“sealing” being a part of mormon marriage ceremonies that binds a couple for eternity). If I recall correctly, a woman cannot be sealed to several husbands but a man can be sealed to several wives.
It’s also suggested that there was some polyandry in the very early days but that’s a whole other terrible and coercive can of worms

@@JohnAdams_NotQuincyIt’s weird and complicated, but here’s the short version: if Bob and Jane get a temple marriage and then later divorced, while they are no longer legally married, the church still considers them married in the afterlife. Bob can then get married again in the temple to another woman, in which case he would be married to both women in the afterlife. If Jane decides to get remarried, she has to petition the First Presidency of the church to nullify her temple marriage to Bob and Bob also has to sign paperwork saying he agrees to it. She is only allowed to be temple married to one man and divorce alone doesn’t nullify it. She could get a marriage outside the church, but in the LDS church’s eyes, she will only be married to Bob in the afterlife unless she goes through the process to get the temple marriage nullified (even if she was legally divorced).
Now if Bob and Jane get temple married and then Bob dies, Jane can’t get temple married again. If Jane dies, Bob can get temple married again and would be married to both women in the afterlife.
I can sources this for you from the official handbook of the church if you don’t believe me. It’s in book 1 (the blue book) that only bishops and up get, but you can find it online.
Edit: Jane can get a civil marriage if Bob dies, but she cannot be temple married (ie married in the afterlife) to more than one man. If Bob dies and she decides she’d rather be married in the afterlife to her second husband, I don’t believe she has a way to nullify her temple marriage with the deceased Bob. You may be able to petition the First Presidency on that one, but then it’s literally up to their decision and I don’t believe it would normally be allowed without some special circumstances. I don’t know the current policy on that particular instance.

it's a whole can of worms because if you look into Joseph Smith's fucking around even a little bit, it's basically a soap opera. there's a reason why it's basically not talked about, they couldn't get away with talking about it very openly without having to address all kinds of things that are very hard to defend morally. marrying very young girls, marrying women who still had living husbands that had been sent away on missions, marrying in secret even from church members, essentially being caught cheating which really upset Emma, and on and on...
it's pretty insane how much they keep a lid on that stuff. I Don't think I ever heard the name of a single wife of his in church, except Emma Smith. I think that's why my folks didn't think he married anyone else. I was raised mormon! Exmo now, but something important to keep in mind is that there are lots of doctrine that have changed and in some cases the church will deny that they were ever part of the doctrine (but if you look up historical records you can find things like Brigham Young promoting the Adam-God doctrine, etc). So there's a lot of stuff in this video that aren't part of current Mormon doctrine but previously were. As far as the dark skinned stuff goes, growing up I was taught black people had dark skin because of the curse of cain, not because of premortal stuff. Now the church denies that ever being doctrine.

    • @brettmajeske3525
      @brettmajeske3525 Рік тому +16

I think part of the concern is how "doctrine" is defined. for those who only count teachings found in actual LDS Church publications, it is a much smaller list than for those who count everything people "remembered" overhearing from a General Authority when they were a child.
Take the Adam-God Theory you mentioned. The only records of Brigham Young teaching it are from second and third hand sources published by an independent press, all from the last five years of his life. And many of those sources actually disagree with each other. John Taylor, who was the next President of the LDS Church, denounced the theory, insisting that Brigham Young was misunderstood.
So why did so many Mormons believe teachings that were published outside of the LDS Church even though all subsequent LDS Presidents rejected it?
The same is true concerning ideas of pre-existence worthiness. Never published in official sources. Yet became a very popular tradition. People will point to books like "Mormon Doctrine" or "Doctrines of Salvation", and ignore both were published through Bookcraft Press, not the LDS Church or even Deseret Press.
I am sure individuals taught all sorts of traditions in Sunday School, since the LDS Church has a lay ministry no teacher or leader is actually trained. It seems a logically conclusion that what doctrines were taught in Sunday School must come from the official manuals provided by the institution. Many of these so called "changes in doctrine" are more a recognition that out of print third party published books are just not a good source of official information.
If one considers all folk traditions passed down by word of mouth as doctrine, then it can get very complicated.

@@brettmajeske3525 The problem is that this sort of “no true Scotsman”-ing of the doctrine means the church can say whatever it wants without having to be accountable for it. By extension, the members aren’t required to be accountable for their beliefs, either, nor how those beliefs affect others.
A modern example is the church’s stance on homosexuality. Right now, closeted and out LGBT youth in Utah are self-harming at an unconscionable rate. The church teaches that homosexuality is wrong, and a sin. Not only is engaging in homosexual relations an excommunicatable offense, but you can lose your temple recommend for ASSOCIATING with pro-LGBT organizations. The church is so sure of themselves that they are letting kids die for it.
Yet, let’s do a thought experiment. If ten years from now the church declared that practicing homosexuals could now be members in good standing, what would the apologist line be?
It was never doctrinal, it was just a necessary policy.
The Proclamation on the Family is intended to protect traditional marriage, not exclude non-traditional unions
The extensive list of general authorities who spoke out against it were speaking as men, doing the best they could with limited light and knowledge.
And while LGBT issues are the most pressing issue, there are tons of others. Women and the Priesthood, abortion, and clergy-counseling for sexual transgressions, to name a few. I’m not saying the church WILL walk these back. I’m saying it COULD, with little accountability.

Joseph Smith, while he did oppose interracial marriage, never banned African Americans from receiving the Priesthood and was moderately abolitionist to some degree. This caught a lot of flack with other white people at the time, hence why Brigham Young started adopting racist ideas from Southern Protestants like the "Curse of Cain." I actually just finished a book on this topic from University of Utah History professor W. Paul Reeve called "Religion of a Different Color." It does a great job in illustrating how racism hurt early Latter-day Saints while also showing how the Church's pursuit of whiteness gave us the racist baggage Latter-day Saints are still trying to reconcile today. It’s stuff my parents and grandparents were taught, but had been washed out by the time I wound up in Sunday School. However, I was actually told by a leader that I (or rather my heavenly husband) would get my own planet 🤣. I think that was just his personal belief because I didn’t here it often. That part of mormonism, at least when I was in the church, was always super vague, and everyone had a slightly different idea 😂. We were mostly taught to love your family/neighbor and all that jazz. Also the Roman soldiers fighting Native Americans? Yup, 100% in the BOM. Along with horses and I believe elephants too 🤣

It says something when Trey Parker and Matt Stone, outspoken atheists who take a jab at anything and everything related to religion, have a more balanced and even positive take on the absurdity of Mormon beliefs than JF. They could at least say “hey, these beliefs are weird, but as long as the people themselves aren’t psychos and are genuinely good people, it doesn’t matter.” JF just went for the throat and treated the criticism of the Mormon faith as fact. No mention of the various communities that are legitimately cult like, just the beliefs themselves.

I dated an asian woman who said as a child they were taught this allegory: (paraphrasing)
God had an oven in which He was to bake humankind. The first batch he burned (black people) and were thus rejected by Him. The second, trying to learn from His first "mistake" he undercooked (white people) and were also rejected by God in their imperfection. The last batch he cooked to a golden brown perfection (Asian people) and were beloved for it.
I do not know how widespread this was taught in her culture but I got this story from her (I'm white) Ironically she always, for some reason proclaimed she wasn't attracted to nor would ever date Asian men...
This was not intended to bash Asian people in any way, but do not think that the belief in ethnic rejection from God has ever been exclusive to white people- I would bet that every ethnicity and most nations thereof have the belief and stories/folk tales/allegories that they are superior in some way...

Hahaha I suppose it could seem a bit scary due to its surreal art style ^^
Destino was a film made in collaboration with an abstract artist Salvador Dali, who made really weird and surreal - almost dream-like paintings. The short film is actually a love story between the man Chronos, who was actually the personification of time (shown by the clock he was a part of at the beginning, and a mortal woman (the dancer you see throughout the film). In my opinion, it is a beautiful rendition of the original artwork that Dali would often make. It’s a weird and very different, yet beautiful love story with abstract visuals and ideas.
Destino in particular is interesting because it was actually started (storyboarded) in 1945 and wasn’t released until 2003 - over half a century later.
I greatly suggest you and your sister go rewatch the short sometime - just keep in mind what the original art inspiration was, and you might find yourself enjoying the film a bit more the second time ^^

Maybe it was just the place I was taught at but it mostly was just “be a good and moral person.” While I was still a member I did participate in some temple practices like baptisms for the dead, and even now it doesn’t seem particularly strange. Every summer there is a program called For Strength of Youth. I was reluctant to go, but I went. It was very cheesy, but I was happy to see the diversity.
I looked around. I saw people of all colors and shapes. People openly wearing pride flags, and gay couples at the dances.
I don't mention that I'm trans hardly ever. But I feel it is appropriate to do so because when I told my bishop I wanted to be a boy, I was not shunned. I was placed into young mens.
They don't care what you are. Just be a good person. That's what Mormons value.

    • @Elysium4
      @Elysium4 Рік тому +1

@@inoscopedjfk09I often consider many of those stories to be results of inner church microcultures that spring up. Just because someone knows something is true doesn't mean they'll actually listen to what it has to say, unfortunately. Social shunning, for example, happens within our church, but it occurs on a case by case basis and is outright condemned by church doctrine as a whole because it runs contrary to the love your neighbor philosophy that is taught.
In regards to this, I would even further argue that people who call us cults are incorrect in their assumption. Especially where I live, I've never been under the impression that Mormonism is particularly different from anyone else, the youth groups host fun activities that anyone can attend, the leadership is responsible but welcoming, and the so called "secret" rituals and covenants spoken by many non-members are not taboo. Even though only members can participate, nothing is stopping me from explaining to a close friend exactly how they work, why they're carried out, and what their purpose is. It's not really something anyone thinks about, I'm not any different from my peers other than me being Mormon, I like anime, Bionicle, video games, and the like, the church doesn't label me as wayward just because I have a life outside the church, it's just a way of life. I'm not a member of a cult, I'm just a religious person who might think differently than someone else.
One more thing, we do not get "our own planet" if we're good. That is extremely reductive and based on only a small part of our doctrine. The church teaches that we are granted all that God has, meaning that we are given his capacity for creation as well as rulership. So, in essence, we get a lot more than a ruling planet, we become Gods like unto him. We don't get our own planet, we get much, much more.

Got to explain why "be can become gods" discomforts you?
I don't understand why that of all things would cause unease. To me its pretty mundane, especially considering other beliefs.
To give context, I wouldn't say I ever really believed, just came to that realization when I was 9 or 10. For me the idea of "becoming gods" is frankly within the realms of possibility of us with real science. Hell, we could absolutely drop down on a bronze age civilization right now and make a strong and legitimate claim to be gods. Sure, maybe not their creator, but beings of power so far beyond the knowledge of that civilization that the difference is moot to them. We could heal, raise them up, alter the climate, or wipe them out at a whim.
Before someone points out the pedantic difference between magic and science; and gods vs beings "pretending" to be gods.
Magic once explained becomes science, or is disproven entirely.
The magicians of old used magic like making a Tea from the Asprin plant to ease suffering and help with heart problems. They've done it for at least 2000 years, and likely humans have been chewing Asprin plants since before banging rocks together was the new hotness. Sure the incantations to make the tea aren't necessary, neither is the user manual for running a nuclear power plant... just a really good idea that might not be as well understood in 5 or 6 centuries.

The LDS church isn't "now known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints", it has always been called that. "Mormons" is a nickname because it is the name of the prophet who it is believed compiled centuries of religious records into what would eventually become the Book of Mormon. It's like calling Protestants "King Jamesers", or Muslims "Mohammedites". It's only useful in that it's widely recognized but has never been technically correct.

Had a friend in high school who was Mormon. She and her family never pushed their faith and beliefs onto me the entire time we were friends either, we would do things like hang out at her house, collab on school projects, even went to senior prom with our dates and had ourselves a double date. She and I remained friends up until we graduated and went our separate ways (I would go on to move out of my home state some years later).
I did do a little research into the LDS church in high school because despite me being agnostic at the time (I'm now a practicing Pagan) and being raised by an atheist dad and a non-practicing Lutheran mother I wanted to support my friend. I just could not get past the blatant racism the LDS church taught, and in some places still teaches. That's not even broaching their views on homophobia (I'm pan) and reproductive rights, or some of their more...eccentric customs, such as the whole "temple garment" thing, not dating til you're 16, no "foul language" of any kind, and the mandatory tithe (Mormons are obligated to donate 10% of their income to the church). I never held it against her because she was never like that as far as I could tell, she always accepted me and was always one of the kindest people I ever knew to everyone she met. I know times are changing for many places as they try to evolve in order to remain relevant, but it still forever damaged the view I held on the church.

I have a mixed, messy relationship with the Mormon religion based on how family within and without of the faith were treated (including myself).
I don't agree with villainizing Mormons, but I also have minimal trust in the Church of Latter-day Saints.
    Highlights of my experience include:
My aunt, whose husband cheated on her. It became public knowledge and she was blamed. He was allowed to remarry in the Mormon Temple, which she is no longer allowed to enter as she "failed as a wife."
I was very curious about mythos and religion even as a child and got confused about a story told during my first sermon with the bulk of the church (rather than the children activities) and asked to go speak to the pastor. I wanted clarification, and earned myself and my grandmother a very scornful look. My grandmother promptly walked me away telling me: "we do not ask questions."
My father, a compulsive liar, who went to prison for possession and distribution of illegal drugs, was forgiven by the church and allowed to marry as a Mormon AFTER being excommunicated for having me in a case of statutory rape w/ my 15yo mother.
So, there is some absolute wrongness occurring, and there certainly are (at the very least) strong cult-like tendencies.
I have since had Mormon friends, but my relationship with my family is a giant wall of caution, especially since I've realized I'm demisexual and pan. I think just knowing would cause untold strain on that side of my family, and I have no intention to invite them spend the rest of their lives pitying me for my understanding of myself or berating me over how they just want the save me. I don't want to invite the hate and prejudice that I know my family has.

I’ve seen several reactions to this and people generally take it at face value and say “Wow! As a member of the church, it's always a little terrifying seeing videos of this nature pop up in my feed. Online, it feels impossible to just fit in normally once people know you're Mormon. I've had way too many uncomfortable confrontations with people who come at me for it. While I can't give everyone perfect answers, I do have a few things to say to clear the air.
Polygamy isn't practiced within the church anymore, but it's practiced in an off-branch of the church called the FLDS, who live almost like the amish. They aren't a part of the actual church.
The race thing does confuse me, because in my 23 years of attending church, no one has ever taught me that. I can't say a lot about that scripture, because I haven't experienced it, and I'm a POC. Racism is directly DIScouraged by our prophet. From my experience, it's been a very inclusive church. But I'm sure there are racist individuals out there, as with any religious group. In all, the teachings of the church, as far as I've experienced it (my whole life) do not support racism. Again, I can't explain that one scripture, nobody even talks about it (unless I guess they are racist and wanna give an excuse), but I promise you they aren't encouraging people to become a bunch of white supremacists.

    • @gristlyknave831
      @gristlyknave831 Рік тому +8

I agree it’s a bit nerve racking seeing people that are non members talk about the church. As for the racism thin the only two things I can think of that people claim the church for being racist is in the BOM in
2 Nephi the Lamanites skin was cursed to be darker. But everyone that points to that ignore the context and later verses. Their skin was darkened to help differentiate between the Nephite’s and the Lamanite’s and not to mention throughout the BOM the tribes flip flop in whos more righteous and wicked. In 2 Nephi 26:33
“For none of these iniquities come of the Lord; for he doeth that which is good among the children of men; and he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men; and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.”
Basically it’s saying God loves everyone no matter who or what you are.
Another thing people point at is in the early days of the church blacks weren’t allowed to receive certain callings or the Melchizedek priesthood. Now we don’t know exactly why blacks weren’t able to at the time but I think it’s important to know the time period and how blacks were thought of. The church was opposed to slavery and Brigham Young I think did have some racist views but he encouraged blacks to live with fellow members for protection and back then he was though to be progressive with how he treated blacks where they even made a cartoon with him holding hands with a bunch of different colored children.
People tend to expect a prophet or other church leaders to be perfect correct on everything but a they are still human with their own free will. To expect perfection out of any mortal man is foolish.
I’d recommend watching some Saints Unscripted videos on this subject as they go into more depth and explain things better and the video on Calyann’s experience with the Book of Mormon is also really good.
I don’t believe the church is racist at all. I think people are to quick to judge things they don’t fully understand. Again when it comes to early church leaders it’s important to know when they lived , their surroundings and what they grew up believing before the church those things don’t always just go away. One apostle if I remember correctly even recognized his fault on his views of blacks and apologized and asked others to try to change. While the church was created by God who is perfect, it is run by man which isn’t perfect.
It is important to remember the past but not live in it. You should learn from it, to make better decisions today then yesterday.

I'm glad to have found your comment and appreciate the things you said. My parents were converts and I have been a member of the church all my life. Of all my years in the church the people I attended with though not perfect NEVER encouraged polygamy, racial superiority, and/or gave any excuse to treat others as less. I do agree that no one can give a perfect answer for everything but for what its worth, what I can tell you is my parents did not fail in raising me by teaching me how to live by the example of Jesus Christ of what he taught.
I remember a story my mom told me when she was young. Sadly there was a time when POC couldn't hold the priesthood and she didn't like that and neither did other members of the church. However when the day came when it was announced that all men could hold the priesthood my mom veered off the road, got out of her car, prayed and weeped in thanks. We may not understand why these things play out the way they do and we don't understand why but I believe only in Gods own time do we understand why. It takes time but the church does move forward.

Hello everyone, I'm a life-long and still active Latter Day Saint (mormon), so i thought people might be interested to know my take.
First off Saber, great video as always. Ive always appreciated how you actually try to do your research and to present religious content in the proper context and respectfully. Thank you for extending us the same courtesy here and in your excellent Don Bluth video.
As for my take on how my beliefs were portrayed in the movie Saber reviewed, it's a propaganda film (anti in this case, but the same comments would apply to pro propaganda too), so even when it's broadly "accurate" it still has an agenda and twists, just like a pro-mormon video does, so take it with a grain of salt.
If you're curious about Mormon history and belief, I highly recommend the books written by John Turner at George Mason University: Brigham Young Pioneer Prophet, and Mormon Jesus (da-na-na-na). I believe he's also working on a Joseph Smith biography right now. He's non-mormon, but is well trained in American religious history and has a close working relationship with the Church Archives and Church History Museum, so i feel he does a good job just presenting the history and beliefs as-is without bias.
As to why I'm a Latter Day Saint, it really just boils down to that i believe the Book of Mormon is true because of the testimony it gives of Jesus Christ and it's given me a lot of comfort in hard times. I've so far had a very happy and fulfilling life, and that's really what we're all looking for, right?
    Best wishes guys ❤

I am 21 now and was raised pretty actively in the Mormon church up until I was 17-18. (Stopped going after the pandemic closed the church for a while and my family just never went back)
Mormonism is always such an interesting thing for me to discuss/see discussed sometimes. I remember being so confused and completely uninterested in the teachings and beliefs in the religion ever since I was a kid (then again I was diagnosed with adhd around 13 and religious stuff has always been boring to me so that might be part of it lol) To this day I think of a very specific moment a child when I was told the line that there were sinful people that were cursed to have dark skin and that was where poc came from.

I remember seeing this back in the early days of UA-cam, but always thought it was made BY Mormons, not by people against them. This makes a lot of sense-I remember the narrator's tone of voice made it sound like he didn't believe any of this stuff at times, such as when he notes Joseph Smith was known for telling tall tales, which I thought was odd for something pro-Mormon. Now I know!
Most of what this cartoon says about Mormon beliefs seems to be accurate, though; they talk about a lot of it in LPOTL's Mormon episodes (like God darkening the skin of the indigenous people as punishment), as well as in the South Park Mormon episode, which I've heard was accurate.

If people who get their historical knowledge from South Park episodes would extend the scope of their research just a little (i.e. to sources which aren't cartoons), they might brush up against legitimate facts, which tend to be complex, troubling, and interesting. Like the fact that Lucy Harris (the "smart smart smart smart smart" woman from the South Park episode) was actually an early 'spiritual witness' of the golden plates and one of Joseph's first financial backers, donating $28 (the equivalent of $850 today) to him to assist with the translation. Odd how South Park left that part of the story out🤔

    Living Scriptures.
They were done by the same company that did Swan Princess. The series features biblical and Mormon stories, it also includes a Joseph Smith cartoon (yes, that's a thing). The company spun off into historical cartoons, as well, people like Gallileo, Louis Pasteur, Thomas Edison, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and George Washington. Putting aside the theology, those cartoons were actually great for kids struggling to learn history. In 2014 I was quietly practicing paganism, spirituality, and sacred geometry in my small apartment in an urbanized area of an old city in North Carolina. I had seen the Mormon missionaries riding around on their bikes around the neighborhood but never payed them any mind. One day they had the balls to knock on my door which had a pentagram wreath secured to it as well as a bunch of hand-drawn/made charms and sigils me and my GF had made in the window. I answered the door and was asked the basic question of "Would you like to discuss Jesus?" or something. I invited them in and made some tea, and while I cant remember the details, the conversation turned into a very civil theological debate in which I challenged their belifies more than they did mine and I opened with the fact that I was raised Catholic (Y'know, the OGs of Christian faith) and had actually had a Mormon friend I was close to in my hometown growing up.
When pressed about why I "turned away from Christ" I pointed their attention to a crucifix I was gifted during Baptism hanging on my wall and I responded "Its not that I turned away from Christ. I turned away from the institution of the Church. I seek answers and meaning that followers of Christ cant provide. It is a large universe, my friends. And following solely one path leads to a road of ignorance." I even showed them the various copies of Pagan, Abrahamic, and Asiatic religious texts that I had on the bookshelf. The conversation ended with us bantering about the local Minor League baseball teams performance that season and they went on there way.
I guess they were trying to convert what they thought was a heathen, but ended up in a debate over what they were really being taught. I hope they are doing well whether or not they are still part of their church. But the whole time I was amused by the fact they're body language gave off the sense that they bit off more than they could chew.

Ex mormon here. You did a good job with the information you had at hand, however, you went with the most readily available information you had. Mormonism is going through a "Renaissance" period, and has been for the past several years. They've been erasing a lot of the old beliefs with "clarifications". I can truthfully say that having your own world and becoming a God (capital G, that was stressed) was in fact spoken about by the prophet during general conference as recently as 2010 when i last considered myself a member.
Mormons are taught that the prophet is called by God to act as his mouthpiece on Earth. His word holds the exact same weight as Scripture and is referred to as "present day revelation".
These conferences have some pretty gross takes, tbh, and aren't as widely publicized as the written material. Pretty sure that's by design, so they can control the masses, and sweep it up when that hot take us no longer as PC.
They usually do this by touting some "new groundbreaking revelation" like they did in the 70's. Fact is, Joseph Smith actually personally baptized black men and bestowed them with the priesthood, which lost him favor in the Southern States. Look at his political record. Touted the church's inclusivity in the north, preached the benefits of slavery in the south. ANYTHING to drum up membership.
Anyways, the second prophet, Brigham Young was a disgusting racist and barred black members from the priesthood. So, rather than say that a prophet was wrong, and admit that everything a prophet says isn't gospel, the guy in the 70's received a NEW REVELATION that times had changed, and God had lifted the curse right there and then...
