      "bizzare"... it had already happened ( 80 years ago - europe - and it was much worse than that )
      and it can happen again , if we won't be careful.

    Her character is interesting. She can be cruel and mean but makes you feel sympathetic towards her. You also get a vague feeling that the only reason she is like this is because of the situation she is in. There are moments I think that she can be kind and I think that she was a very nice person before the whole handmaids movement. But I hate her after that last episode and I don't think I could ever like her again. Great acting! 👌🏻

      She (Serena) was an intellectual who worked with her husband in the same organization. They got more and more radical (as often happens with fundamentalist people of the left or right alike) in their views, and she (according to her own words in the last episode) herself wrote the rules for this new dystopic society.

    • @veggiesarefruits
      @veggiesarefruits 5 років тому +7

      Exactly. She CAN'T be kind, otherwise the house gets out of control, and then she will end up on the wall. Everyone on the show is just trying to survive, and depending on your status, the way you survive is different. For a woman of her status, the way to make it in Gilead is to have a baby, exert control over other women, and try to get your husband to make changes, because you yourself have no power to do anything.

    Loved Yvonne - She's always so charming when she interviews, even with a host as horrific as this one. He kept trying to goad her into talking about politics when she made her discomfort very clear with her body language and facial expressions. He makes that "rewind" comment around 6:50 (classless), then after his Trump comment, he confuses uncomfortable laughter with actual laughter, "I don't think it's funny actually." Get off your high horse. You didn't even know that Reed Morano is a woman. He's not funny nor is he relatable, and he didn't do his research... but Yvonne handled it very well.

    • @maddiewhatever441
      @maddiewhatever441 6 років тому +4

      Agreed, and plus he kept pushing that this was a 'far right' world when it could happen to either side. This side is just a little different than how it would probably be in a 'far left' world. We'd loose guns (giving the government complete physical power over us), we'd eventually loose religion, ext. He was just ignorant of people who disagreed woth him

    • @maddiewhatever441
      @maddiewhatever441 6 років тому

      ms wpwm Not really. Switzerland allows the people to own guns, and they are doing amazingly. You also can't say they are attacking just us because of guns. Im sorry, but thats illogical. Ariana Grande's concert, Paris, and Berlin all were attcked. Not because they had guns mind you, because they didn't worship Islam. That's the radical Islamic's whole thing. You don't follow Allah and our rules, you don't deserve to live. On the issue of where nost Radical Islamics get their guns, they get them illegally (or from parents). Banning that wouldn't matter because they'd still find away. Dude, these guys are basically suicide bomber ready to do anything to kill, you don't think they'll find away to get a gun? But that wasn't what I was saying. What I was saying is that when the people loose their power (via guns, speech, ext) the government gains controll. We are a land that was meant to be buillt on a small government, one that didn't have the government hanging over us and controlling everything we do. We have the right to own guns incase our own government decides that it wants power, just like England did back in the day. If you see in the show, these people are defensless. They get shot at and no one could shoot back. And you really want us to be compaired to other countries? Where one girl was being attacked, but used pepper spray, and instead of being helped, they charged her? He was trying to rape her, but I guess since it's another country it's okay.

      I know this is such a late reply but what's wrong with people publicly talking about their politics? I'm not asking this to start an argument, just curious. I don't really understand why people get upset when public figures share their opinions and beliefs. Isn't that a human right regardless of occupation.

    • @vincenttalley5938
      @vincenttalley5938 Рік тому

      @@lynn99anna Personally, I consider it to be divisive among people. More often than not, it’s very difficult to convey exactly how you feel about a certain subject. And as a result, people can often get an inaccurate assessment for how you feel & what you think on certain subjects. And with news headlines, reporters often try to get any misleading headline about you or simplify what you’re saying so much that it becomes inaccurate.
      But TLDR; I think it’s often hard for people to look past certain disagreements they have with other people. And as a result, politics often cause more division than good.

      I have to disagree. I don't like American interviewers generally as they tend not to be very clued up and constantly interrupt their guests. However, I think this guy really, really knows his stuff, asks intelligent questions and gets fantastic interviews out of all of his guests. But then I've seen a lot of his Build interviews, and it's probably difficult to judge on this one instance. I recommend watching others in the series, as they are truly brilliant, and they seem to get the cast of all the most current shows and recent films, so they must be highly regarded by actors and producers etc and their publicists.

      He's also dead wrong on the Australian far right, and she's obviously not politically involved enough to argue that point. Our right wingers do everything in their power to defund and degrade public health and education (along with environmental efforts and social welfare). It's the public who won't let them do it as brazenly as the American right, so they have to do it quietly in ways you wouldn't necessarily notice until you need the services that are having their funding chipped away at, or work in those industries.

      As a 'non-American' in the US, I know talking politics can be a bit... tenuous. I'm perfectly happy discussing my views with people who know me, but even then - depending on the scenario - I'm very careful with what I say/ the way I say it. This is youtube, so I don't have to be quite so careful ;-) - I don't know this interviewer but he is so 'sheltered American' in the way he said he doesn't think Trump is funny - he had no idea why she laughed. It's a 'oh dear, how exactly do I answer this' kind of nervous laugh because she's speaking in front of an audio doing a promo interview. Fast forward 15 months to now & the comparisons have been drawn far more frequently, the conversation is there; but even still, passing comment on the political system - especially if you're not a citizen and can't vote (idk if she is... You can be a permanent resident but not a citizen) is different than if you *are* an American.
      He also showed he had no clue here by passing comment himself on Australian politics - which is fine if they're into a discussion, or it's been agreed as a talking point, but he really came across as tone deaf the way he did it. Also, in Australia, everyone legally must vote, so I'd hazard a guess that she skipped over that question and *really* didn't want to go political rather than she had absolutely nothing to say. It doesn't sound like any of this was prepared, or questions agreed upon. He did the same laughing and saying he 'doesn't know' "SEGA" (in the UK, we said 'say-ga') when he laughed at her for saying that and she gave examples of other words that are said differently... just came across as a poor interviewer, with no idea a world exists beyond the US.

      Ash also shes a white woman. Her take on certain freedoms will always be a bit off... I don't say this to be controversial, i say this to point out the fact that people of privilege always see the idea of oppression as something they can seperate from whereas an Original australian descendent, i.e. the more disenfranchised of Australia have a completely different take on the political climate and certain aspects of the democracy.... remember there was a period in time where the original people of Australia were invaded and had their children taken away strippes of their language and had their women sexually assaulted and displaced into the lowest positions of white society...

    I really enjoyed this because when I watch the show I can feel nothing but complete and utter hate for the character of Serena. My blood boils every time she comes on screen. But Yvonne brought a very interesting aspect of humanity to all of it and gave her character so much more depth for me in opening a dialogue of sympathy toward a woman who is in some senses a victim as much as any of the handmaids. While that does not justify Serena’s behavior, it explains it. I think it was brilliant of this woman to find such a deep meaning in her character and it translates on screen.

I know the show is extreme but it's seeing the extremes that keep you fighting against them. America is nothing like Gilead but the creepiness of the show comes from the conversion of America into Gilead. It really is a slow incremental breakdown of democracy until eventually you're in Gilead before you know it. And it usually starts with the ray Moore's and Donald Trump's of the world.

      Unless she moved here as a child, one doesn't really pick up an accent THAT strongly just by moving to a new country. I can't help but wonder if she's "trying" to adopt the American accent.

    ...and I don't think Serena's character is a sociopath. She is a complicated character that is going through her own arc, her own remorse, anger, and feelings that she can't come to terms with. Sociopaths don't do that.

    you know, there have always been conservatives and liberals. There have always been disagreements in society and politics. That balance is what helps us function. To suggest that the "far right" want to create a society like "Gilead" is offensive. Conservative does not equal evil. Nor does liberal equal evil. Evil equals evil. No matter what your political or sociological beliefs, nothing makes one evil except evil choices.

    Her character is not a "bad guy" she is a desperate woman willing to do and sacrifice anything for what she wants. At least that's what I took away from it. I thought she wore this role well and it was awesome to see her do something like this.

    • @smallsignals

      Morgan King the beautiful thing that Yvonne brought to this role is that we were able to see just how trapped both women are. Especially come season 2, with Marissa Tomei’s cameo. I’m so proud of this lady, proud to have her as part of my home country.

      lorfalconswan True. But there are some moments/scenes of the series cause me to see that there is some good in her. She does love Nicole. And is willing to let June hold the baby and even run away. She stood up as sort of resistance which cause her finger to be cut off.
