Right for a while actually thought she was a plant from the rebel side, but based on some of the dark thing she's done lately even behind the back of Gilead, especially to the poor crazy one eyed girl ( sorry ive been locked up with to much tv can't recall her name ) I kinda figured she just crazy or disillusioned

I've been studying Scientology - NOT as a participant but just to know more about this belief system. It truly is oppressive and dangerous. Elizabeth Moss was born into it. Her whole family is still in. She keeps her connection under wraps and it's no wonder. She is a great actress and a fine producer and Handmaid's Tale is great television. It is to be hoped that one day she will have an awakening regarding her belief system and move away from Scientology's abusiveness. Meanwhile, I still admire her talent.

I first read “The Handmaids Tale” in my mid-20’s, and it scared the living hell out of me. I have to admit, I was honestly a little nervous when I’d heard it was being made into a series, but clearly I needn’t have worried. Everyone working on this, from the writers to the cast are nothing short of phenomenal!
I love every single person that make up the immensely talented cast working on this show, but I especially adore Ann Dowd. Her talent absolutely blows me away every time I’ve watched anything she’s in. But more than anything, I adore how she’s yet another brilliant light in an amazing string of talented women who have literally just exploded that stupidly long held idea in Hollywood that actresses over 40 have nothing to offer.
She’s not what most would see as “beautiful” compared to all the other perfectly plastic actors and actresses, but I see such beauty and grace in her as well as all the other amazing women who have rocked the status quo of Hollywood to its core in the past 30 years.
If I didn’t know any better, I would swear the role of Aunt Lydia was made especially for her - I honestly doubt anyone else could’ve pulled off this highly complicated, complex character as perfectly as Dowd has.

I gotta say the show makes me very happy and proud to be Canadian! 😂
Glad to see you've all discovered our hidden treasure Margaret Atwood, she's got an incredible mind splattered in a number of books! English was a favourite subject growing up and she was one of the authors I had to wrap my head around. Not an easy task I might admit. 🤪

I am so floored by this show. I have loved it from the moment i watched the first episode and became somewhat obsessed if i admit it. The way they execute the killings and cover ups, the plans and attacks carried out by the most brutalized and abused people on screen is somewhat freeing for those of us who've been brutalized in real life. The artistic beauty in the way they've written the characters yet at the same time making them brutal and seemingly equal parts incredibly evil.

@Arielle Yvonne was pregnant at the time of that would-be rape scene and even if she wasn't, I think he (th actor) didn't feel it fit with the plot of the story. They use rspe against the handmaids to supposedly populate Gilead and I feel like if he crossed that line with his wife he would just see it as a cheap and rapey show with no real substance.

    • @jenniferponzini2433
      @jenniferponzini2433 4 роки тому +34

It wouldn't have made sense to the plot I think. The wife is not a sexual vessel. She is supposed to be pious and almost especially as a wife who cannot have a baby. It would have been, in Gilead's eyes, something heinous. OR maybe the scene itself didn't make sense to what was happening in the episode?

    • @tizzbabe4386

I think that the way this show presents mean characters (by also showing their humanity, having good moments, showing vulnerabilty and feelings to the point that make us forget about how evil they are and start to kind of like them) is very related to the cycle of abuse/doméstic violence/GBV where abusers go from evil to charming in a blink of an eye.

I disagree completely. It's important to humanize and provide nuances. People are complex. A lot of people do evil acts without being psychopaths. It's possible to be extremely clear about judging the evil acts, without judging and dehumanizing the whole person. Dehumanizing entails a "them and us" way of thinking that can legitimize hurting and punishing said person in any way possible, and in so doing stoop to their level.

    Thanx for this vid!
Too bad the Moss/Hiddleston thing didnt work out. I must confess a fondness for TH, & EM is the calibre of artist this observer would like to see him with (we'll leave the rest of that sentence unwritten!).
Yep.....Im a grandma. Can't help giving relationship advice when the opportunity arises, tho I know it only travels to the cloud.
And yes.....what about Max M? A fine young actor Ive been following since "Elvis & Annabelle." I'd luv an update.
Would also like to know more about the actresses playing Marthas. I recognize some of the faces, but know very little about the artists.... Hm....
Perhaps you could make a few vids devoted to the categories of persons (& unpersons) in Gilead: handmaids, Marthas, aunts, wives, commanders, etc. I would certainly appreciate learning more about the lesser-known actors populating these roles, & I believe many others would too. For eg, who was the willowy young actor playing the "silenced" handmaid? (s3 e6)
That scene where June is speaking to her, unknowing, then looks!!! I'm hauntd by it. The horrific elegance of those 3 simple metal circles & those large hopeless eyes? It's the only scene in the series so far that sticks in my craw, perhaps because that was precisely June's reaction, one she could not effectively repress. Or perhaps because the greatest (& closest) evil of the story, for me, is the brutal, all-to-familiar attempt to murder women's voices & return us all to the cage.
A part of me knows I could probably manage the sexual BS (after all, many women know the art of cutting themselves off at the neck, a survival skill in our world, & one we hope to leave in the dust, eventually), but no words? No reading or writing? How can you stop thinking? Or speaking? Or asking why? & according to every elementary report card I have: "Robin continues at the top of the class, but she still talks too much."
Im a Canuck, bred & raised with Margaret Atwood, & have studied her work all my adult life (MA in Lit & some years teaching at uni). I am in awe of her precience! We would ALL do well to pay attention & I read everything she publishes ASAP.
There is something remarkably singular about this series, pretty much the only one Ive watchd in all these years that equals its source novel. (disclaimer: huge GoT fan, books 1st then series, but have complex thoughts re: the relationship of text/film in that case). And I confess I made a few false starts with Handmaids, unwilling to face the bleakness I knew was coming. That changed, & soon I couldnt look away! I watch each episode 3-4 times when it drops, there is so much cinematic detail to absorb, & in this show, faces are important. They punch far beyond their class.
OK. Hadnt intended to write a personal review essay here, apologies.
Must be some passion under this old surface.......

Huh didn't know about the scene between the commander and Serena when they went to Canada but I have to give the guy who played the commander credit. Unlike when they forced down June, the act of doing so to his wife has very little bearing on the story as he's already put forth that he is a terrifying character around her at times. The weird relationship between the two of them has developed well enough that I don't think that visual is needed!!! There's nothing wrong with actors setting a boundary for their sanity especially if it doesn't contribute anything to the artwork of the storyline!
