CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Quint (Robert Shaw) compare scars they've received over the years -- both in and out of the water.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg's 1975 shark saga set the standard for the New Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Atlantic resort Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Satisfied with the shark they find, the greedy Mayor reopens the beaches, despite the warning from visiting ichthyologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the attacks were probably caused by a far more formidable Great White. One more fatality later, Brody and Hooper join forces with flinty old salt Quint (Robert Shaw), the only local fisherman willing to take on a Great White--especially since the price is right. The three ride off on Quint's boat "The Orca," soon coming face to teeth with the enemy.

It is here that Quint and Hooper realize, despite their vast differences socially, they are both men of the sea and they have the scars to prove it. Just a great scene.
Probably the only time they ever really got along.
Max Frankow
it's nice to see them get along for a change.
I think this is the point where Jaws fans fall in love with this film. The three guys have all become friends. You kind of go... Ahhhhh. How can that not win your heart over.
Definitely. I also always noticed how Hooper's response to Brody about the Thresher shark("it's a shark") was almost irritated, realizing in that moment that he had more in common with Quint and was annoyed that Brody couldn't keep up with them. A little subtle moment but I always thought that was genius.
How Robert Shaw didn't receive an Oscar for his performance in this, I'll never know. He WAS the movie.
+SidJustice1 I know. He was.
+Bobby Papoutsis That all depends. At least when you drown you're unconscious so even if it takes a while you'd have a better chance at living because the animals would think you're playing dead and since CPR is relatively new in the 70s you's have a better chance at someone picking you up and reviving you. Whereas Quint in the movie, he got bit in half with the teeth sunk in on the stomach. So whether the shark eats him or just lets him go floating around in the water he won't live long because if loss of his legs in water without treatment don't kill him, then the acid in his stomach mixed with his own blood would eat him alive from the inside.
Mary Ellen muffit she broke my heart haha haha
He soon died after the movie. But I can't remember the cause of death.
John Cornell Yeah, it was a heart attack that killed him in 1978.
“Mr. Hooper, that’s the USS Indianapolis...”
*instant thousand yard stare*
Amazing acting...cannot get over how great this scene is..
Yeah, he mentions the Indianapolis and Hooper becomes instantly sober.
Mr Hooper that s the USS Indianapolis Indianapolis instant thousand yard stare
As a child I did not understand this part watching jaws. But as an adult I see the gravity of it. Being envolved in the Indianapolis tragedy moulded him to be a man who callously hunts sharks for a job.
Brody checking his appendix scar, lmao.
That's not his appendix scar. They don't go into it in the movie but the reason the chief gave up his job as a cop in NY and moved to the small island is that he was shot twice in the abdominal area.
Bullet wound
When your friends are bonding and you are just standing around feeling left out.
@@lacubsfan as much as I'd like to believe this is true from a worldbuilding perspective. I still need a citation. Is that from the novel?
00000000000000000000000000000000000
I'll never get sick of Dreyfuss' laugh in this scene.
Same 😂😂
The semi-drunken howl after the camera cuts away from him when he mentions his broken heart us an absolute joy!
And wen they all sing 'show me the way to go home"! Great acting! 👌
I love how Brody glances at his appendectomy scar and decides to keep quiet.
It's a gunshot wound - from when he was a cop in NY
@@lacubsfan Have you ever heard the theory that Chief Martin Brody is actually Det. Buddy Russo from The French Connection?
@@brendanforester4601 I've never seen it... Should I?
@@lacubsfan Oh it's definitely worth a watch.
Roy Scheider gives a great performance, as does Gene Hackman.
The movie also has one of the most iconic chase scenes in movie history.
@@lacubsfan you again. No it’s not
Hoopers laugh. The most contagious laugh I’ve ever heard. Every time I hear it I piss myself laughing 😂
Christian Frazier Hooper, ya idiot!
I dislike Quint's laugh.. I think he was drunk..
Ravem Gaming & Art he was. Robert Shaw was so drunk when doing this that they could barely have him stand in this scene so they had him sit
Dreyfuss’s acting laugh is probably one of the best laughs in all of film. It’s pretty realistic and hilarious. I crack up every time he says “Mother” and then loses it lol
Me too
Mary Ellen Muffett...She broke my heart.
thats honestly probably the funniest line ive ever heard in a movie. its so perfectly paced
Hahahahahahaha
NEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHHEHEHEHEH
@Junkboi 7 Oh, that's a tattoo, I got that removed.
@@Grandmaster_Dragonborn Don't tell me. Don't tell me.
Mother.(laughing)
you're wearing a sweater. hilarious line, no one ever remembers
you're wearing a sweater hilarious line no one ever remembers
Love the way Quint and Hooper look at each other at 1:37 like "Did we just become best friends?" Cracks me up every time
Also think that laugh about the arm wrestling wasnt in the script Shaw just genuinely laughed
2:39 That change in tone...man, what a great movie.
Yes, exactly, a great and a most important creation in this scene, the sobering moment when these two characters transition from the joyful games to the solace and dignity of acknowledging the alternative to suffering as death itself. Very good point, thanks for bringing it to our attention. Chris
@@askmeif Indeed.
Agreed. you kind of get the impression that Hooper is in disbelief that he actually is meeting one of the survivors.
"You see that?"
"You're wearing a sweater."
😂😂😂 hahaha
I'm glad you shared that line from the Chief. His comment had always passed by me undetected until you pointed it out.
Right there May Ellen Mofit
She broke my heart 😂😂
The best line, actually. Thank you
That’s acting ladies and gentleman , real acting and dialogue . All 3 nailed it !
Roy Schieder, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw MADE this movie as much as the director, the composer, and the crew. Their chemistry and the dynamic they share is just perfection.
It's sad they hated eachother
Robert Shaw the QUINTessential rough old sailor in this film.
Best character in Jaws hands down.
He was so authentic. The real deal. He balanced out the film. And he wasn;t their first choice. Sometimes things really happen for the best.
IMO opinion Robert Shaw and Dreyfuss were so missed in the sequels. Dreyfuss to me was also integral to the success of the original Jaws.
I never knew Shaw wasn't their first choice, who was?
darthkahn45 Not sure how much they were first choices but it was offered to Lee Marvin and Sterling Hayden and they turned down the role. Robert Shaw was the only choice. I believe he was recommended after other work he had done including The Sting in 1973. Hard to imagine anyone else in the role of Quint. He lived a long life. Was sorry when he passed away.
Brooke Kavanaugh Steven Spielberg did once confirm Lee Marvin was his first choice for Quint. Marvin said he would rather go fishing. :)
That guy makes me laugh every time I watch that. "Don't tell me... MOTHER"
Hooper
Richard Dreyfuss is the actor lol
During these few onscreen moments, we get a nice breather. This comes just before one of the most chilling monologues ever written and put on film. Just for a few minutes, Jaws feels almost like a buddy picture... with the fellows sitting down to dinner and telling stories.
J. Rossi you're so right man.We truly admire this movie. We feel proud we were here to watch it born or not at the time. i wasn't but i watch it later
This movie is just like good old wines that just got better with age and can claim legendary movie title. This decompression part before entering the monologue part is essential to make the audience feel easy going and then to capture people's goosebumps on the monologue part just like a nail on the wood.
Amazing. No words to describe.A lot has been said by a lot of comments. No special effects like modern times movies but just like someone said in the comments , in terms of acting,of editing, etc, you can hardly remember a movie that even match this one.Even i would say nowadays movies. Some of them are crap compared to JAWS.
And then after the uss indianopollis war talk,Bruce coms back and tries to ram into the boat, which led to the engine getting destroyed,he really wasn’t playing games anymore with the trio.
1:39
"You wanna drink?"
Drink to your leg?"
"I'll drink to your leg"
"Okay we drink to our legs" xD
And i love how Quint laugh 😂😂😂
I still don't get it but it's funny af
I like to imagine that the shark is swimming around, listening and laughing along with the crew.
Steven Spielberg is a fucking genius
I love Hooper's laugh XD
xD
That sealion!!!!!
I forgot how much you really fall in love with these characters. They're so much fun to be around and seem so real. And with thanks to Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss for bringing them to life with such passionate and genuine performances.
To be honest, after reading the book every character was really pissing me off, they're such assholes.
Yeah the book kinda sucks honestly
Everybody's gangsters after boasting scars
then Quint's USS Indianopolis story showed up
These characters are so funny, I bet they are funny to hang out with in real life
@@Tripl3Cherri3s the teamwork of quint Brody and hooper is so much greater than the book. At one point in the book, brody put hooper in a chokehold for 10 seconds or 1 minute I’m not sure.
@@laurababyyy1 probably because in the book he bangs his wife 🤣
jaws is the BEST movie ever made. first summer blockbuster and one of the best horror movies ever made
I've read the original book, and trust me, just about all the characters are NOWHERE NEAR this likable. Spielberg himself said that he was just about rooting for the shark itself when he read the book. Smartest thing the man did was change the personalities of the characters - the fact that we end up caring about them is what helps makes this movie so damn good.
Robert Shaw seems like a wild man in a cool way. He would have been a great drinking buddy I can guarantee you that.
Hoopers laugh gives me life.
Big Chinese fella pulllled me right over hahaha.
No swearing, no bullets flying, no fighting. Just two drunks comparing body scars. You have to pinch yourself to realize they're ACTING! That's talent.
"Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side chief.."
You missed a line. Before that, Brody says "what happened?"
My favorite part about this scene is the change in tone from the drunken laughs to the deadly serious...but it actually happens twice: Quint gets quiet and puts his hand on Hooper without saying a word --- and you just know that whatever comes out of his mouth next going to be something awful --- and then it is.
Such a great scene with great characters and actors.
1:39 😂😂
“You want a drink? Drink to your leg?”
“I’ll drink to your leg.”
“Okay, so we drink to our legs.”
2:04
Very unique laugh only Richard Dreyfus! 😂
For those who don't understand the bull shark scar. Shark skin is very rough, rougher than sandpaper and is covered in denticles. These denticles are very streamlined and sharp, which helps a shark move in the water more efficiently. A scrape from shark skin could severely cut your arm, poor Hooper :(
And this movie is still legendary in 2023!
***** Sharks are pretty badass :)
Sharks be like, "I don't think I have enough teeth. Hmmmmmm...............I know! I'll grow some teeth on my skin!"
XD
A good scrape from a shark could remove a sizable chunk of skin.
The interaction and kinship/banter between the male characters is the best in any movie. 3 actors giving great performances.
The funniest part of this video is when Richard Dreyfus is laughing. Simply hilarious.
I like the setting in this scene. Hooper and Quint are together under the light, sharing stories about scars. Brody is in the dark, away from them because he doesn't have the life they do. The stories about scars also alienates Brody because while Quint and Hooper are bonding over stories about injuries from marine animals, Brody silently looks at his scar, a scar that can't help him be a part of the conversation. The isolation as well as the togetherness of the characters is so subtle, but so obvious at the same time just by how the characters are placed and the lighting.
1:56 "You're wearin' a sweater." LOL
His laugh is always gonna be in the back of my mind
Quint is surely a great guy to drink with
Wish I could go back in time and have a drink with him.
Benny Kwok it would be so awesome if a time machine could exist.Visit cultures from the past, civilizations, people we loved and cared...😕😟😔😢
He was a notorious drunk.
trouble is, he didn't exist, except as a compilation of three guys Shaw imitated. Mundus, Kingsbury and Murphy.
@@MrTribalsun past civilizations might get you in big trouble.
infowolf1 I’m a pagan so medieval Europe would be a fuckin no go for me XD
One of the greatest scenes in cinematic history...Shaw is legendary
Best scen ever made in history of films.
well one of the best of many
Yup indeed! This & the scene that follows it.
Wanna see something permanent..Bo-bo-boom?
The original "Do you wanna know how I got these scars?"
Richard was so fucking cute, I can't not smile when he laughs like that :)
He was great in this. Yeah, cute too.
Indeed. As an inebriated Hooper, he’s showing his character’s youth and vulnerability beautifully.
"See that right there?"
"Yeah, you're wearing a sweater"
Burn man.
This movie changed the way movies were made it one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite directors.
+James Taylor There is certainly a timeless feel about Jaws that other 70s movies just don't have. Obviously in modern times the special effects are dated, but in terms of the writing, dialogue, tone, acting, editing ect, Jaws is absolutely timeless.
IndianaJoel93 it's a complete masterpiece. i agree 100%.
Quint & Hooper are the same person, just different experience. They both have serious respect for nature, Quint has seen first hand what nature is capable of though.
this is not a movie about a monster shark, but about three excellent actors given all the room they needed to act so well together,
I love how this scene humanises the characters. It makes us that much more invested in the showdown that happens with the shark the next day.
2:04 the best joke in the movie. Just the way he laughs after made me laugh
There's brilliance in almost every line of dialogue in this film. When Hooper responds to Brody asking what a Thresher is, you can hear the annoyance in his voice at the Chief's naivety. Which further strengthens the momentary bond between himself and Quint, the seasoned shark hunters.
Robert shaw. Roy scheider. Richard dreyfuss. The 3 actors that helped make the movie jaws one of the best of all time.
Legends, all 3 of them. What makes it even more iconic is their names all begin with the same letter, how often do you see that?!
Never ask a fisherman about his scar. I learned that from reading Pat McManus.
The laughter in this scene, makes even better.
I got the creme de la creme, right here hold on... here see that? Right there, May Ellen Moffit... she broke my heart.
I love Robert Shaw's reaction when Richard Dreyfuss say her name, perfect the way he isn't even looking at Hooper, but at the chief's face. ;-)
Hoopers laugh...
*I literally cannot-*
This movie is a masterpiece.
Show me the way to go home...
I'm tired and I wanna go to bed...
+sk8terjoe98 I had a little drink about an hour ago and it's gone right to my head!
+Shrihari Hudli Wherever I may roam, by land or sea or phone!
sk8terjoe98
You will always hear me singing this song!
+Shrihari Hudli Show me the way to go home BUM BUM BUM. :-D
For me this and the next scene are the best in the entire movie and are one of the best scenes in movies overall. What really makes this movie so great isn't the shark or jumpscares- it's the wo nderfully acted and deep characters.
My most favorite part was when he said "Mary Anna Muffet. ......... She broke my heart." and then he starts laughing.
in the set he was really drunk
yes.. but Saw redid the Indianapolis speech scene stone cold sober - fact..
The grotesque position of Dreyfuss' leg on the table. Great direction.
This is such an Iconic scene.
I often tell my friends my scars are from sharks, moray ells, and bear. LOL
When Jaws is not scary, it's incredibly funny!
"Okay so we drink to our legs." XD
This is a moment in the movie where the action grinds to a halt so the audience can process what had just happened in the previous scene. It's a time for both the characters and the audience to take a break from the action so the film is enjoyable, not tiring. You could get up, go to the bathroom, get some more popcorn, get a refill on your Coke, come back, and not miss anything absolutely essential for the story. If you decide to stay, you get a little bit of bonus character development with these guys exchanging stories. Win-win.
The Japanese have a name for moments like this. They call it "ma." The fact that so few modern films have any kind of ma really makes me think that Hollywood really needs to start slowing down the pacing and letting the characters lead the way, instead of the plot.
2:04 gets me everytime 😂
This is my favorite scene, must be some improvisation going on (Shaw looking off set as if to Scheider) then more comedy banter, building slowly to the edge of the chasm where tragedy lies.
Superb!
1:48 Mr. City Cop over here has a story about that stomach wound that he’d rather keep to himself.
2 bullet wounds from NY
The clip ended early. If you're curious, the USS Indianapolis was sunk by a Japanese submarine in WW2. The survivors were all (except one) killed by the largest known shark attack in history. He talks about it later. I've read a little bit about the book. The captain of the battleship was put on trial for negligence. Interestingly, the captain of the submarine that sank it spoke in his defense. The public anger from families of the sailors was too much and the captain committed suicide. He was exonerated sometime during the CLINTON administration!
This ICONIC with all three- but the moment when Shaw lays his hand on Dreyfus’s arm…my goodness….zero to UH OHHHH on the turn of a dime…acting that’ll LIVE ON.❤️
" your wearin a sweater" too good 😂
1:44 i love how they laugh like that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This reminds me of Lethal Weapon 3 when Gibson and Russo were comparing scars lol
amazing actors.specially Robert Shaw.Eternal!
2:37 Quint grabbing Hooper’s arm like “Boy..........don’t go there.”
When I was little, my favorite part of this movie was the shark. Now that I’m older, my favorite part of this film has definitely got to be the human elements. Every scene these three have together are awesome.
It is legendary that the making of JAWS was a nightmare for all involved, with budgets and shooting days going overboard. Steven Speilberg later said that it was when filming this scene and the subsequent Indianapolis speech that he and those involved finally knew that they had a movie as opposed to a possible mess.
How fitting that it was the scene when Quint and Hooper finally find common ground after butting heads for most of the journey.
The way how Hooper laughs😂🤣😆
Hooper's laugh kills me 💀
Good scene seeing them all getting along. So cool to see them comparing scars. I wonder what caused the scar on Brody's stomach.
Christian 4_Realzz omfg
Vetrozen Gaming What? I found out later that it was because he had his appendix removed.
Christian 4_Realzz that was actually a real scar that Roy Sheider had.
i bet robert shaw was fun to drink with
The response is key in the way it lets you know the USS Indianapolis story is a real thing that actually happened.
This was probably the first Jaws clip I ever saw. Me and my friends watched this bit over at my friend's house and laughed our asses off because of "the weird beard guy with the laugh." A couple of years later this was to became my favorite film when I saw the whole thing ("the whole DAMN thing!").
Jaws has some really interesting backstories to it. I do feel kinda bad that everyone had to go through so rough times. Spielberg himself stated he's had nightmares of the production years later.
What an amazing movie. I'm truly grateful that I got to see 👀 this growing up as a kid, and I truly miss those days.
Nobody in cinema like Robert Shaw. This is a classic right here beginners.
2:00 Lin Manuel Miranda. He broke my heart.
"Sometimes the Sharks would go away, sometimes they wouldn't go away". Gives me the shivers every time.
R.I.P. Robert and Roy. Thank you for all of the memories. 💯🦈🙏🏽
Actors soo real and lovable.JawS holds your attention and more.
This is honestly one of the best scenes in the movie
Wanna Know How I Got These Scars?
Luke Lauchle why so serious?
My father was a drinker and a fiend.
Thresher shark.
And one night, he comes home crazier than usual...
I’m guessing Quint got the tattoo while in the Navy. Then removed it due to survivor’s guilt. He doesn’t want to remember that horrible event.
Yes.
Boom boom boom was so freaking funny I laughed so dang hard 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
the laughing . . just feels like its part of the bloopers XD
This movie is just perfect
Damn, almost makes you forget there's a shark out there.
Agree with you there, a haunting re-telling of an amazing story.
Robert Shaw told Spielberg he already had a drinking problem prior to filming. Spielberg just let him get drunk on set for the scenes they were drunk in. Can't get any more realistic than that!
i love scenes where the characters make the best out of a bad situation
