@@bigpoppa05that’s a 2 way fridge I know what that is, I’m wondering about the dual purpose fridge you mentioned… what else does it do besides make food cold?
Josh, thanks for the update. We just love our 2 way refrigerator. The camper came with 2-30 gallon propane tanks, that is for the frig, heat, and stove and water heater. We also love our gas hook up outside to plug in our Blackstone griddle. We have been camping for well over a decade, and love our 13 year old camper. We can boondock for weeks, and never worry about running out. Matter of fact we have never even come close running out of propane. No worries for sunshine, no worries for any type of weather. We especially love boondocking in the forest, under the trees. I may have to buy a spare 2 way refrigerator and probably a RV gas cooktop stove so we will have replacements.
I totally agree with this statement! We have recently switched over to lithium batteries and we love to be in spots with no hookups. We love the fact that we can be away from the crowds and still use our 2 way refrigerator and heat! Thanks for the info Josh!! Always a good (and informative) time!
Fresh water was my big concern when boondocking. Solved it by buying a submersible pump, a whole house water filter, rv filter, and more hose. I just need to be within about 100 feet of any fresh water source(river, creek, pond), and I can fill my fresh water tank. Other tricks prevent filling of black and grey tanks so quickly.
Thanks for all the great updates. You're the best. We love our 12v refrigerator. We never used a gas/electric one, but we did also buy 3 lithium batteries when we bought our travel trailer back in 2020 (model year 2021) due to health reasons, we weren't able to use our RV for the last year and a half. However, it does live on our son's driveway, plugged into a 30amp plug on his electrical panel. So the refrigerator stays on 24/7. It uses very little electricity. Our RV has been used as a bed and breakfast for several family members, including us for the past year and a half, and everyone loves it.
Josh, you help the RV buyer/seller/dreamer/someday/etc. in so many ways. It's so nice to be informed and entertained at the same time and you do it extremely well. When my time comes to purchase an RV, Bish's will be my first stop. Looking forward to your next video, no matter the subject!
@@JoshtheRVNerd well after you said there were 5 1/2 more RVer’s that explains why my spots where no campers were 20 years ago are now swamped. Getting harder to escape 6 million people near me, and growing every year.
We could really use a posting about Why RV service centers are now so so bad. WE have a Newmar Dutch Star and have literally run through every service center within a reasonable location to us. They either over charge, build in unnecessary charges, work on their own timeline and don't have the unit ready when promised, etc etc . I swear, it is this part of RV'ing that makes many of us want to get out of the industry. I have yet to have one positive service call where I was not stressed, angry, or feel like i was just screwed. I believe that when they see a $$ coach pull in for service, the pull out a totally different set of pricing. We took our coach in only to learn that we needed 8 new tires. When I agreed to replace all of them, I saw the line item list and they charged me 125.00 to put air in the OLD tires to inspect them, only to pull them off and put all new tires on and inflate them. To me this is just taking advantage of customers. It really makes me want to get out of the industry like we did when we boated. Example. The very last time we used "Camping World" they kept our coach for a solid month, FOR AN INSPECTION. Then once it was finally complete, they made us come pick up the coach immediately "or be charged a daily rate". I finally told them I will pay YOU a daily rate, as long as YOU pay me a daily rate for holding it there for a MONTH for an inspection.
I love these walk-about videos where I can see what's on the lot while you talk. You tempt me with the smaller towables. I wish it wasn't such a long haul from western MN to Michigan. LOL
Very complete update of the current RV trends. I for one will be sad to see the gas/electric fridge disappear. Had a 12v for several seasons and went back to the gas/electric. Simply because we off grid a fair bit in shady areas. You can put all the solar on the roof you want, but if it is cloudy or shaded then unless you have a gigantic battery bank you simply cannot keep up with the 12v fridge, let alone run some other stuff you might like to run. Don't forget to wipe the mud of your shoes before heading back in the office. And as always, safe travels...
Auto dealers are overflowing with trucks now. With no new trucks being sold, we can be sure there are very few new people entering RV market and buying new RVs.
I love the gas - electric but you can't stop change so as long as it works I guess we have to go with the flow. Great information keep up the good work. Till next time 👍👍👍👍
My 50-Litre 12V DC fridge uses 8 watts per hour on average. That's just 200 watts per day. A 50Ah battery (not "gigantic" at all) will keep it running for 3 days. And the thing I like about a 12V DC fridge is that you have endless options on how to charge your battery to power it. A solar panel, a DC-DC charger in your vehicle, an AC/DC power supply plugged into household AC, a gas or propane generator, a small windmill... heck, you could even attach a generator to an exercise bike and pedal away. It's far more versatile than a 2-way fridge.
Appreciate the straightforward info - I've read so many bad things about the industry in my research for travel trailers, I'm not sure how I feel about buying one, but this kind of transparency goes a long way to making an informed decision. Thank you!
I asked a salesperson about a 2022, he told me the price was probably reduced due to some damages or could or may have issues. He didn't want me to look at "22.
😂 Nerd Herd, love it! You're the reason we bought a unit from Haylett, now Bish's. Always love the updates. Not all that surprised about the move to 12v fridges and adding solar to these rigs. Should have been done yesars ago!
Why this is the stupidist thing. solar will not keep up with your rig. cloudy days/ parking in the shade because you need to stay cool....dumb. but they are forcing it on you...its not a good choice.
I have had the gas/electric and now have residential both worked for me. The residential fridge was bigger and serves our needs. When boondocking we use a generator. EV’s are in infancy and heading towards teenage years as more are available and more charging stations are becoming available at same time. Really looking forward to increasing solar standard with RV’s including large capacity batteries for quiet off grid camping
I live in an RV with the Dometic electric/gas fridge, which I dearly love because the interior has a very low moisture level and the fresh produce lasts so much longer than in the regular all electric models. I hope they consider this factor in the design of 12 volt fridges. Since my fridge runs on electric 99% of the time it seems that doable. My grocery store, Winco, has about 3 or 4 electric charging spaces in their parking lot now. I live in an RV Park, in Dallas TX, which does cater mostly to the long term RVer. I moved here about 4 1/2 years ago because I want to live tiny within the city limits so I can be close to work as I have no plans of retiring ( I'm above retirement age.) I love what I do. For me, it is a logical way to not have to deal with all of the zoning restrictions, rules and regulations currently placed on and against tiny homes. I live in a preowned 2014 - 27' Grey Wolf toy hauler, which I purchased from a dealer in 2020. It's financed. I love my trailer and also love where I live. Many of the residents are here because they move around from place to place for their jobs, staying anywhere from 4 months and more. Josh, you're awesome. Your knowledge and willingness to share it is really gracious and important. I hope my answers to some of your questions are beneficial. Thank you.
Ahh, thank you for the update! This was a good one. On 12v fridges: it's about time. 12v is so power efficient and 12v power available everywhere that this switch was basically inevitable. I have long suspected that RVs would become a carpetbagger itinerant worker home, or a "moochdocking guest house." Being real, the vacation industry relies heavily on disposable income and the recession looks to be eating that up, so pivoting away from being purely a summer vacation toy and towards a BOXABL competitor makes perfect business sense.
These things are a matter of personal choice. You can't just shove options down people's throats on solar and batteries. Don't you know that lithium iron and lithium oxide batteries are filled with rare earth metals. Safe disposal of these batteries is virtually impossible as the contamination rate is as bad or worse than nuclear waste. Have you ever seen what a lithium or cobalt mining site looks like? They scar the earth for hundreds of square kilometers and kilometers deep. Plus, the Chinese Communist Party controls most of the mining sites in Africa where rare earth metals are found. Do you like child slave labor? Orphaned African children, often sold into slavery by their own parents, dig for cobalt and lithium with their bare hands. Is this the kind of labor practices you want to make mandatory for RV owners. Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it. That includes a guilty conscience for African child slave labor. People decry slavery from over 150 years old in America. How about trying to help the impoverished, brutalized innocent children of Africa today? Mandatory solar and lithium batteries have a direct bearing on the deaths and suffering of children. Still eager to pass mandatory solar and battery laws now? Let's hear Uncle Josh weigh in on the Chinese controlled mining practices in Africa.
I don't want the chance of leaking heavy metals easily breaking on my roof. Or the added expense. They are already offer solar preps which IMHO is fine.
@@eugeneenslow8563 solar modules contain heavy metals. They're made from glass. Nobody talks about it but research how to properly dispose of a solar module (people call them panels but that's not the correct term). I'll help- there's no correct facilities yet in existence to properly handle these things. It's a huge ticking time bomb for the solar industry in the US. RV's get hit with hail, road debris and trees all the time.
Hi Josh, we love our Large 2 door gas/ electric fridge ( which we bought from you). We use it as a seasonal house rather than sticks and bricks. Thanks for keeping us informed
We entered the market - again- under warranty and have been waiting a month for the slide to be fixed. We have traveled under 40 miles and not camped. Feeling so let down by everyone involved. Thanks for your information.
Older camper 2010 great shape at seasonal spot. Love my electric/gas refrigerator! When electricity goes out at campground, turn over to gas and all perishables saved!
We have a 12V, two weekends ago at one of TN's great state parks, the power went out. Heavy winds put a tree over a power line feeding the park. It was hours and hours waiting on the power. After hours of running the fridge the battery dropped significantly, we have no solar on the camper. We plugged the truck back in, let it idle for 15-20 mins, and that got us through the next few hours until the power kicked on. Not ideal, but it got us through. A panel or two on the roof and it'd have been a breeze.
That was alot of interesting info. Thank you for all that hard work you put together. Love watching your videos and love your humor 😅 "Rock in my shoe, Squirrel" 😂😂
Hi josh, as always, I love the information that you depart to your fans on a regular basis. I feel the refrigerator industry is putting a steak in the heart of the Northwest boondockers with the removal of the 2-way fridges. Have they ever been to the NW? We are dominated by large trees because it rains here all the time and if it's not raining, it's overcast. Without a large investment into the hardware need for questionable solar results, the equation kind of sucks from a Northwesterners standpoint
If you absolutely need to use propane, just buy a small, inexpensive 700-watt propane generator and run it for an hour to charge your battery. That's enough power for 3 days of running a 50-litre DC fridge.
personally, I love our 12v fridge. it’s huge, efficient, and cold. our in-laws have a propane-fridge and it’s a whole different bear. if we camped without sunlight it would be a different story but we’re in the southwest and run dual deep cycles with the factory 165w solar.
We have had several RV’s for over 25 years now and since the pandemic boom began we have experienced a lot of frustration with getting reservations in public campgrounds. In addition to that, a great deal of the commercial parks in Florida are hitting a price point where we are beginning to consider alternatives that make more economic sense for spending the winters there. I hate to sound selfish but I am honestly glad that things are rapidly slowing down in the industry because it is something that my wife and I still enjoy.
Thanks Josh, great video we love our 2 way refrigerator we have two 30 pound tanks we love our Open Range travel trailer. Our 2020 F-250 has a beautiful 7.3 V8 gas engine just had a 58 gallon fule tank installed . Thanks for the updates and the extra work you put in .
I will be selling my Toy Hauler this year and the one thing I don't like is the residential fridge, sucks to much juice if not plugged in. If you have some where to plug in it's great. I am in the boondock crowd!
Thanks Josh - it's amazing how fast folks can implement stuff. Every parking lot at my health insurance clinics (many across the city I live in) now have covered parking (nice when it snows) that just happens to be oriented towards the south to take advantage of the solar panels on the roofs. I expect they'll be adding a few charging spots if for not other reason that the docs might need them 😀
Josh, I absolutely LOVE the way your brain works. So much valuable information in a short video. What should we, as consumers, do about these slimy snake salesmen at these dealerships. This has been a huge complaint from customers, so much so, that we don’t want to buy from dealerships. Some salesmen even push for financing, even though we offer cash payments. How do we get our local dealers to be more like you, so we the customers, can have trust and confidence in these salesmen to stand behind their products and not try to screw us in a sale. Love your videos, keep up the fantastic information!
Great update! You’ve outdone yourself with the charts and tables of sales. Super interesting to see the breakdown of travel trailer vs 5th wheel, Class B vs C etc.
My local dealer still has 205 - 2022 units left over that they can't move. With the NADA on 2022 at retail it's going to be tough on a lot of dealers to move these even with cutting prices. Most people want a 2023 not a 2022 even with a steep discount. Some 2023 are a better deal than a 2022.. Thanks for all the updates! You the Man!
We have experienced the same thing. Wanting a Lance, but they want more for the 2022 models than the 2023s! We ended up going with a different model and found a dealer actually wanting to make a deal on a 2022.
Thanks for the update Josh. Been part of the Nerd Herd since 2017 when we first started dreaming. Even though we're in Texas, we watched all your camper reviews (by far the best of any on the Tube!) and finally decided what model we wanted. Took some looking but we did find one here in Texas! It was your promoting of the U-tensil drawer in the 2019 Freedom Express 192RBS that had me hooked lol. Great camper for two retirees! We are just occasional campers but really enjoy your honesty and hearing all you have to say about the market and all things related. Thanks for excellent content!

For well over 50 years people like me have been camping off grid for weeks at a time with a two way fridge👍It is truly sad to hear that manufacturers are now throwing these true campers to the curb to cater to the far from camping, Glamping lifestyle😢😢😢
@@JoshtheRVNerd No, because I don’t live in Arizona or San Diego where the sun shines 300 days a year, I camp under trees and unfortunately in the rain far too often. I have a “two way” fridge and 2 batteries and if I use my furnace in the Spring and Fall I sometimes can’t go 48 hours before I have to run my generator. A 12V fridge and furnace will decimate 2 batteries unless you have at least 200 watts of solar with constant sun or you run your generator for several hours every day. The average person does not want to spend several thousand dollars on lithium batteries, solar panels and/or a generator just to be able to camp off grid for a few days with a 12V fridge. I remember the first video you made on 12V fridge efficiency and you thought at that time that 1 battery might run the fridge and camper for a day or two. Over time you have definitely become more conservative with your estimates which I am in total agreement with, but I can also tell you that if I didn’t camp off grid most of the time I would definitely choose the same 12V fridge that most of your park camping viewers love👍
@@JoshtheRVNerd Sounds like the solution to the Fridge for off grid or in general is at least a couple Lithium batteries and then let the generator charge them. I have heard that a 10-12 cubic ft 12V fridge will use about 40-50 Amps a day after it has gotten cold. With a couple 100 Amp hour lithium batteries you can run about 4 days. Say you are obviously using other electric you might go 2 days and then need a generator run. I am not expert, but I always thought the RV fridges were terrible at keeping things cold anyway. At least the 12v have a compressor that will keep it cold. 🙂 I have never used one, so take all this as an opinion of someone who probably does not know what they are talking about. LOL.
We had considered upgrading our rig in a few years but decided to remodel the one we have instead. We also boondock almost exclusively and even with a decent solar setup we couldn’t do it without running the propane for the fridge.
I’m very comfortable with my 12v fridge. I can turn it on a few hours ahead of loading and it’s cold. I’m not sure what the solar wattage is on GD basic solar panel from factory but its ran the fridge for 3 days already before I hooked up and left. I think they are great and do not miss the 2 way fridge at all.
Great update! Always appreciate you keeping us informed of all the industry news. Btw, we here in the PNW are kinda forced to go off grid because our crazy lawmakers won't allow new/improved RV parks or adding more hookup sites to existing State Parks. Kinda sucks honestly - to get hookups we have to book at least 9 months in advance.
Same many places in the Midwest. My frustration is with people that make long term reservations and don’t show. We need more accountability, I’ve been in state parks half full, site tagged and empty the entire weekend. We don’t have a lot of private parks that don’t involve a buy in or long term commitment, out of the reach of many retirees. On an evening walk, many units were for sale, and people are hurting due to lack of awareness of the true cost, maintenance, and work. Thanks for your help coping in these times. Education for the prospective buyers is essential, thanks. Will we see short and long term leasing in the future?
@@cindyfavorite195 I've heard there are some websites that basically gobble up reservations to resell them. I've also hear that's not the case. I'm sure SOME of that is happening
I worry about the EV push for the RV industry. I have a feeling that it will thin out the ranks of RV'ers. The wife and I will never go full-time, our priority is numerous weekends away from cities. It's our downtime. By the time it comes too fuition, the wife and I will be residents of a seniors facility.
I love my gas/electric fridge AND water tank. No matter where we go, WE ARE COVERED! We love state park camping & often times have no H²O or electric. We have saved friends with solar panels that cannot keep up with power requirements.
I have had a 12v cooler size fridge for years and it works amazing, it keeps temp much more steady than my gas electric norcold. I think it will be a positive change.
DC Compressor fridges seem to be a huge boost in efficiency over Absorption fridges (propane/electric). They also have the advantage of having zero debate over being left on during travel. The DC Compressor fridges can be easily run with a solar setup also.
Thisis your pie in the sky theoretical thinking. most people who have gone 12v only regret, and many who can swtich back. your comment 'seems' to be this theoretical thinking, Sure they can be easily run with a solar setup, but not for long. You clearly don't actually have this setup. It's obvious.
@Wil I Am We will find out in July, and post a video of the results. We have pictures of what we will be using posted in the community tab of our channel.
@@wiliam8244 We ran an ICECO 12-volt DC Compressor for 11 days, 10 nights off two 120-watt portable panels and a 999 Whr battery bank. The battery never dropped below 83%, even with rainy days. We also documented it on video that anyone can watch on our channel.
Wow. What a perfect fit for Walmart and other big box stores like Target, many already have massive solar panels on their massive roofs, now they can sell some of that power to people with EV's!! Perfect fit.Could be good for RV'ers too when batteries improve a bit more for towing. With Walmarts huge parking lots there will be able to accommodate vehicles with trailers easily. Will also help keep other EV charging stations honest on their pricing. Most people charge their EV''s at home, but for road trips this is fantastic, given the number of Walmarts out there!
I wonder if Walmart Etc are considering putting in charging stations because they would get extra business when people would go spend a half hour hour inside while their car charges
@@sssophiesmom It's probably a number of factors; 1. Yes, why not let people charge during the time they are shopping? 2. It lets them sell them some of the very cheap power they making on their roofs and over parking lots. 3. Its another draw and reason to go to Walmart. Its a win win for everyone, especially with the number of stores they have and the amount of capital they can leverage on solar panels and EV chargers. It cost me about 4.5 cents/mile to charge at home, they may not be that cheap, but other charging stations may find it hard to compete with them. And charging times will be very close to "gas up" times in the near future.
Fuel prices are derived from pure greed. They call it "supply in demand" and I call BS! It's all about making profit!! Thank you for this update "Uncle Josh", I know how much work you put into these and please keep em coming!!
When you eliminate USA energy independence, insult OPEC and continue a war in Ukraine instead of look for peace it causes the world gas market price to go up. It is a world market not business getting greedy
Every business requires profit to exist. And it's not so much the oil companies driving the price, it's the futures speculation market that drives prices primarily. They buy oil futures based on political and economic events expected and will drive prices up.

Can always count on you Josh to tell it straight!
I sure try. Ty

Yeah Solar doesn’t mean a hill of beans if you’re in the woods
Exactly
Nicely done. Useful, topical, relevant

Not all that surprised about the move to 12v fridges and adding solar to these rigs. Should have been done yesars ago!
Ty for picking our door step
Why this is the stupidist thing. solar will not keep up with your rig. cloudy days/ parking in the shade because you need to stay cool....dumb. but they are forcing it on you...its not a good choice.
I have had the gas/electric and now have residential both worked for me. The residential fridge was bigger and serves our needs. When boondocking we use a generator.
EV’s are in infancy and heading towards teenage years as more are available and more charging stations are becoming available at same time.
Really looking forward to increasing solar standard with RV’s including large capacity batteries for quiet off grid camping
you are so naive about how much electric power is availble vs. the massive amount of energy in gas. you clearly don't understand the core concepts.
Hey Josh! Love your banter and fantastic and informative presentations! I always learn something! Love the comparisons! Thanks so much 👏
My pleasure! TY Cindy :)
Thank you.
Ty so much for the kind words. Safe travels to you!
Yeah it’s hard to say. The boondock crowd isn’t small by any means and will definitely push back
Aways good info. Finally pulled the trigger on 21fkbs 2019. First trip next week. Thank you Josh!!!
Congrats!!
Thank you for the updates Josh. I wish RV manufacturers would make solar and deep cycle batteries as standard instead of added options.
Lithium. Not deep cycle lead acid.
@@scubasteve7946 battery leakage on your roof?
@@eugeneenslow8563 solar modules contain heavy metals. They're made from glass. Nobody talks about it but research how to properly dispose of a solar module (people call them panels but that's not the correct term). I'll help- there's no correct facilities yet in existence to properly handle these things. It's a huge ticking time bomb for the solar industry in the US.

Yeah that safety net feature is nice
We have a 12V, two weekends ago at one of TN's great state parks, the power went out. Heavy winds put a tree over a power line feeding the park. It was hours and hours waiting on the power. After hours of running the fridge the battery dropped significantly, we have no solar on the camper. We plugged the truck back in, let it idle for 15-20 mins, and that got us through the next few hours until the power kicked on. Not ideal, but it got us through. A panel or two on the roof and it'd have been a breeze.

The PNW was actually specifically in my head when I covered that segment
If you absolutely need to use propane, just buy a small, inexpensive 700-watt propane generator and run it for an hour to charge your battery. That's enough power for 3 days of running a 50-litre DC fridge.
We have a 12 volt Fridge in our trailer and we love it. Our solar panel works pretty well and we have an EcoFlow Solar generator.
Ty for sharing Nora

personally, I love our 12v fridge. it’s huge, efficient, and cold. our in-laws have a propane-fridge and it’s a whole different bear. if we camped without sunlight it would be a different story but we’re in the southwest and run dual deep cycles with the factory 165w solar.

For well over 50 years people like me have been camping off grid for weeks at a time with a two way fridge👍It is truly sad to hear that manufacturers are now throwing these true campers to the curb to cater to the far from camping, Glamping lifestyle😢😢😢
Curious - have you tried a 12v fridge?
@@JoshtheRVNerd No, because I don’t live in Arizona or San Diego where the sun shines 300 days a year, I camp under trees and unfortunately in the rain far too often. I have a “two way” fridge and
2 batteries and if I use my furnace in the Spring and Fall I sometimes can’t go 48 hours before I have to run my generator.
@@stevez340 Yeah solar can help but isn't the perfect solution once weather factors and tree coverage come into play
Very good information, thanks for sharing.

That's rough.. cannot improve existing infrastructures? That seems problematic
Oregon is adding more Rv sites in their state parks, hopefully they’ll be ready for this summer.

Yeah the Walmart thing caught my attention
Appreciate the video and facts you collected and shared. Great format.

Hey Myles, it’s “supply and demand” you idiot.
And I call it Biden.
