I appreciate that. I just hate being that guy that yells angrily at a camera on the dashboard of his pickup if you know what I mean But i see these ugly practices EVERY DAY and it drives me nuts
When I bought my RV the finance lady offered a warranty that cost 25% of what the RV cost. I feigned a shocked look and told her I wasn’t told the RV was so bad that it would cost that much to warranty and stood up to walk out. Her reaction was priceless. She stopped trying to add stuff on.
Just purchased a White Hawk 29BH from Bish's (after visiting many other RV retailers) and found them to be totally honest with regard to fees. Yes, they wanted me to finance (who wouldn't) but when I told them it would be a cash sale, I still got the agreed upon great price. I drove over a 1200 miles and got the best deal ever. I was NOT going to pay the extra 2K for the walk thru fee at delivery at Camping World. Thank you Bish's for your honest business practices.
We have been through this the past month. They refused our "cash" and told us they HAD to charge us an additional $2000.00 for us to buy anything with cash. !!! How insane is that? Josh Thank you so much for all this information.
I wish I could have seen this video a year ago. Camping World is a perfect example of an RV dealer that practices all these tactics. I did go through with my purchase, but I had to fight to get all the junk fees taken off. It was a terrible and stressful experience. I actually resent the fact that I went through with the purchase. I hope anyone planning on buying an RV watches this.
We pick up our new fifth wheel from the dealer tomorrow. I just went through the paperwork and the only additional "fees" on our paperwork are the addons WE asked for. The hitch for my truck, the modifications to the unit (tankless water heater etc) and an extended service contract that goes beyond the manufacturers end date on theirs. The sales lady at our dealer asked for our budget, what we were looking for as far as features, length, weight etc. and when we asked for the out the door price, she had it in writing within 5 min from finance. The finance guy was straight and to the point, and at no time did we feel like they were pushing us into anything we didn't ask for. We're in Tulsa, OK and the dealer we used was Bob Hurley RV. They didn't waste any time trying to upsell us or push us into anything we didn't want to see. Great dealer.
This is why you negotiate the out the door price. I don't care how you write it up. That's what I did when we bought our 2021 Alpha Wolf 26DBHL. I just wish I would've known how bad the service department was at this dealership for getting warranty work completed. It took months to finalize and some things were never pushed through warranty and then charged us diagnostic fees for these items, which we were not told would be done. They cut a tire down in the shop and expected us to pay for it. Nope. I don't care what your sign says and policy may be. We took pictures of it and no tire was down. It took another 6 weeks to get a matching tire. They forgot to put our tire cover on the spare and I didn't noticed until I got it home. I called to see if they ship it , which a tech said they found it, but it's never shown up. Never again with them.
I’m glad you mentioned the name because that’s my hometown and I am a single woman and I know the first place I’m going to go shopping when I get ready to buy!
Thanks for the info. Another scam I've seen posted is the contract is written up for a different unit than the one the buyer agreed on. Wingman Wisdom just told the story of a couple that bought a $200K motorhome that got scammed this way. If you find a unit, take a photo of the VIN and make sure it matches the contract.
A year after we bought our camper at Bish's Coldwater location I see this video. Good to know they practice what they preach. We made a tour of NW Ohio, Northern In, and southern MI and looked at several models. While we intended, and did pay cash, everywhere we went I asked for the OUT THE DOOR PRICE. When we got home, we thought about it a few days, called Bish back and gave a credit card deposit and asked for the amount we should make out the check for and that is what we paid. A year later we have many happy camping memories so far and that will continue when I retire next year
Josh I met you at the Kalispell Bish RV dealer a few weeks ago. I made a deal on the Artic Wolf 321 BH fifth wheel. The entire experience up to the point of signing the paperwork was great. Then the finance manager tried to sale me all the extend warranty BS. He even tried to sell me gap insurance on a 54K purchase with 20K trade in plus 9K cash down. There was no gap that needed insurances. Needles to say I got my down payment and trade in back and walked out. I’m currently shopping for the same RV at different dealers. It wax great meeting you and I truly like you are a stand up guy. It’s a-shame it ended this way. Keep up the great videos!
Could you do a video on safety and security measures RV owners can take? I've seen so many posts on RVs being vandalized, broken into, burlarized (inside and out (propane tanks, batteries, even sway bars)), and stolen. These things are happening right on people's property, at dealerships (waiting for service), in storage and campgrounds.
Thank you Josh for all you do for us. Not only all the great RV stuff, but sometimes when I get tired of things in general, the news, etc. it's just great to tune into the Nerd, a friendly face and great disposition, plus lots of good information . Keep up the great work! A friend in Holland, Mi.
Hey Josh, buyers can also be "pressured" into buying the extended contract, GAP insurance and other things. Not told it is required, but it is discussed and added to the contract which is brought to you be signed. When you see the total price and decide you don't want the extras, the finance people doubledown on selling the extra products to you. And in a moment of weakness you agree. The good thing is, there is a cancelation clause, but it has already been added to your loan which affects your term and payment. This happened to us at one of your Bish's dealers. Needless to say, we were not happy with the process, especially since we chose this dealer partly due to your videos. We are hoping to have a better experience with the service department.
It's hard to get your money back once you've discovered that you've been swindled. It helps to have a mean, vicious lawyer who can threaten a lawsuit, and then back it up by alleging fraud in the inducement and treble damages. Filing a claim with your state's attorney general's consumer protection division doesn't hurt, either.
Okay, when you walk into the finance guy's office to buy a car, truck, or RV, just know they are the up sales guys. Just say no. Do your research before and decide if you need or want any of the extended warranty or services stuff. I got NO pressure on my purchase just this past Thursday. I paid cash and merely said, "not interested." You still have the power. But I guess being a crusty old fart, makes it easy for me to say NO. bahahaha
This happened to me on Monday! What can I do as a consumer to reverse these charges, for all these products? Do I have to contact a dealer, or each individual item? And how do I find out if I really need any of these?... Ken
Josh, I think this one of the best vids that you have done. A great service. I want to add that if you are being "strong armed" into purchases.....walk, if not run. ALSO report it to your State's Attorney Generals Office. I saw too much BS in my career of people being taken advantage of. I'm lucky that my Daughter was a Attorney for our State's Supreme Court. Contacting the State's Attorney General's Office was her recommendation for unfair business practices. One thing I have always done when buying a car from a dealer was make my offer " I have X amount of dollars, I HAVE to be out the door for that X amount of dollars". If my offer wasn't accepted initially, I walked. I had a couple of times when I would get a phone call the next day saying now they could do it.......I didn't go back, if I can't get the best price right off.....forget it. Also "sleeping on it" is one of the very best things you can do. Amazing how getting away from the dealer, a good meal, a "cooling off" period can clear the head and make it possible to make a unemotional decision. Great video....Thank you Unc Josh!
Thanks Josh, this whole video is gold. I took your advice and it gave me the confidence to not get pushed around by a dealer. And pushing back helped me save almost $1000! Passing a bit of that along for ya.
Personally, I am a big fan of hidden junk fees, but then again, I enjoy a good colonoscopy. Now to my point: While I really haven't had a big issue with hidden fees, I have experienced enormous pressure to buy add on services, such as extended warranties (usually available for less elsewhere), paint packages, etc. Perhaps a video on these packages would be useful to your viewers
I'm so glad I found you. We are new shoppers and about to finance a travel trailer. We had to put a $1000 holding fee until bank gives us approval of loan amount and after detailing and such until we sign real contract. I left the building not feeling excited for this and staying up at 3am researching if this is a right buy. And your video solidified my thoughts. At 8am we are going to cancel our buy and not shop with them. Thank you for making this video.
I have a “sleep on it” policy. An RV is NOT a NEED item so taking the time to do your research will save you in the long haul. Before buying our used trailer I looked at what the going price for that particular trailer was around the whole U.S. and averaged it out. I then took that number to the dealer as my final offer and I got it, saving us $7K. I gained a lot of respect from my husband that day.☺️ Never be afraid to walk away.
Thank you for the education for customers on this! I worked in auto sales for several years and it's very similar. I walked away from a car purchase once because the dealer had "mandatory fees" on every vehicle, "you have to get the paint package and extended warranty, all the cars come with it here". I will pay more for the better value/experience and I actually tend to buy an extended warranty if the price is right!. When you are looking at the total picture, the cheapest is rarely the best and you'll get what you pay for. (Most people shop off price rather than value though)
Josh, you and Bish's are golden. This stuff goes on in the car sales world, but I had no idea how bad it could be in the RV world. Thanks once again for you and your company's outstanding integrity.
Ever notice that Josh is almost never around any of the employees? I think he's just some crazy guy that found a camera and wanders around this dealership making videos until someone runs him off... Seriously, dude. Love the videos and the info. You're a blessing to the newbs in this market. Thank you.
We have 15 acres here and you can find yourself alone quickly Most of them run away when they seem me with the camera anyway afraid I'm going to embarrass them or something
@Josh the RV Nerd at Bish's RV I realize that this is every manufacturer, not the dealer. Near as I can figure, it's a way to get you in the door with a lower MSRP, then wham, "mandatory options."
Your "TRUTH" on this subject is inspiring. I will take this knowledge to the negotiating table on our soon to be purchased travel trailer. Thank you Mr Winters, I would love to meet you in person.
Man I wish I would have seen this BEFORE we bought our RV.....37,000 went to 48,000 before I knew it... really did NOT know what we actual spent untill we got our first statement.....now we are so upside down in it I couldnt trade or sell it if we had too.....and now being disabled we were actually thinking on trading it on on something smaller with an auto leveling system..... smh. BUT as as always so proud of being part of the Nerd Herd!!! Keep the good info comming!
@@lyfandeth absolutely yes. The lender has to make sure their RV is covered if damaged/totalled. Because it really is theirs not yours until you have paid in full. If you dont keep it insured you would be in default of your loan and could have insurance force placed and cost added to your loan and that insurance will not payout to you it would payout to lender. That being said they typically cannot dictate who your insurer is. They can have things like min insured amounts/type of coverage and maximum deductibles. If you have a loan you absolutely need insurance on your rv. To add clarity this doesnt mean GAP. I am talkimg about collision and comprehensive insurance.
Met car dealers that gave the gut feeling of, run as fast as you can. To me buying a car from many dealers ranks right up there with dental visits. Avoid it until there is no choice.
I was in Camping world buying a part. They were redoing their sales offices so they had tables out on the floor for rv sales. You could hear the guy selling this couple the under belly water proof spray and the camper spray lifetime wax LOL
The most honest explanation I have ever seen. We went through a lot of this with a national dealer in Ohio. It ended up in a knock down drag out argument. We finally stood up and walked out, and they caved. A few years later, we traded up with our local dealer, all on a handshake, and they added nothing, no surprise costs, and no high pressure. If our local dealer doesn't carry our next RV, we will make the trip to buy from you.
When the salesman or especially finance manager asks “What do you want your payment to be?”after you ask for their best price, you should probably run as fast as you can. If the sign outside a used car dealership says “we tote the note”, run at the speed of light. Who benefits if you have to buy insurance that makes a payment if you can’t due to job loss? Hint, it’s not you, it’s the seller/finance company. If you are buying a new car, you can shop the protection plan or extended warranty across the Internet from another dealer before the 24-72 hour cancellation window expires. The manufacturer’s extended warranty price is negotiable and you can save a lot outside the finance manager’s office, or simply by relying on the vehicle’s manufacturer warranty and standard emissions warranty. Even with manufacturer financing, the rebate that you may receive for financing under the manufacture, a program will be likely be exceeded if you pay your loan off to completion at their higher rate. Line up your best financing before you walk in to the sales floor with a checkbook.
Me and my ex purchased from camping world, purchased a 32k, put 6k down. We were tired and hungry after the 3 hour process to purchase... didn't fully realize all the junk they added until later when it was settled and i realized the loan was for 42k. 🤯 Then i recently purchased from a local dealer 'buckeye rv'...and wow, the difference was night and day. Quick, simple, and not shady at all...only hitch, taxes and basic fees were added to the price.
I wish I had seen this video 2 years ago when we bought our 1st camper from Camping World. Thought we were getting a good deal at the time. Found out later we did not. Really became apparent this year when my wife and I wanted to trade. I reviewed the paperwork from the original sale and what they were offering. According to their numbers, we were $16000 upside down on the loan. Keep in mind there were alot of hidden fees factored in as well. Needless to say we are not trading and not going to buy a camper from them again. With the original loan, they lied about the term of the loan.
When we bought our RV we should have walked away. They charged us a prep fee. I questioned it and they said that when they get the RV from the manufacturer there is a lot that they have to finish. I had never seen that from any other dealer. I guess I really wanted that RV. In hindsight, I should have never signed on the line.
Thanks for sharing Josh! I just went to the RV show and it was funny listening to the salesman lie to me, so I pumped him up and lead him on and then told him the deal is off and I walked away. That was gratifying!
I think that Josh should be a must see video before anyone buys an RV. Why, because I have never heard a salesperson yet discuss weight. Their answer to the customer is always "oh yes that vehicle is plenty big enough", Just to make the sale, their not worried about tthe customers safety. Thank you Josh.
There is not a half ton truck built that should be towing more than 5000 pounds otherwise you’re just wearing the truck out and should’ve bought a heavy duty truck. Do the math off the payload sticker on the door of the truck and you will see how much you should be towing!.
I wish we'd have seen this last October. The more I think about it, the more I know we got stung! Added on so much that the price jumped tremendously. Then they told us that they had to be the ones to winterize it, and charged us for it!! Thanks for the scoop, it will save someone alot of $$$$, and next time we buy a tt it will help us, too!
In 1989 I worked at a Florida dealership and we had a book to go by it had a scale of pricing and color coded Green, White, and Red. Basically a motorhome could sell in the range of $35,000 up to $85,000. The RVs did not have price tags on them. Someone would ask how much is this 36 foot class A? I would have to go ask my boss. He would look at the book and he would give the highest price allotted in the book for that motorhome. Then the customer would have to come up with a counter-offer. Then I had to go back to my boss and he would counter-offer and say "If they balk at this price ask them how much would they pay and ask them to give you a check to show they are serious." I hated this practice but I was a dumb 24 year old and knew nothing. If the customer was a complete gullible person they take them to the cleaners. I sold one 21 foot class C to a man. It was the least expensive Class C on the market for the brand. It should have sold for $31,000 and they got him after down payment and trade in for $51,000. I had no idea. The man came back 6 months later to buy our 36 foot Class A and he was soooo upside down. He came up to me and said "You got me." I felt so bad because I had no idea until after the deal how much he got screwed over. BTW, when he had come to buy the Class A I had already moved to the parts and accessories department. At least I could price things honestly there. This is why if I was anywhere near MI I'd buy from Bish's.
I worked for a Chevy dealer in Pa that used the word Volkswagen on a sticker to code the price to aim for and again what they had in it So when we brought friends or family on the lot we could show them the lowest the dealer would go😊
Awesome video! I've thought about becoming a rv buyers consultant. So many people just will not push back at all while negotiating. My mother could talk her bill at the grocery store down 20%! It is sad how many dealers are willing to take advantage of the goodness in most people! Thanks uncle Josh!
Very, very interesting. I've heard of these add-on costs, but haven't seen the details. I remember years ago my dad walked away from buying a car he wanted when they added several fees that he wasn't prepared for and thought was bs.
Thank you Josh for these amazing informational videos. In the market for a travel trailer now. And this stuff gives me shopping confidence. You dah man Josh
Josh, you're right on again! You've got to play attention all along the way. So we traveled three states away to get the exact model travel trailer we were looking for. They damaged the underbelly installing the inverter for our solar (left a gaping hole). It took them three times to try to install it.(putting us up in a hotel several nights) They didn't even know we needed it😢 not to mention others issues, but the kicker was when we received our paperwork to register our trailer it showed we had paid $0. Actually we had paid cash in full. That finance manager was very disappointed we weren't financing, even trying to sell us on it. The store manager was great paying out on all the repairs for the lousy work his employees did. Just too bad he needed to.
@@UrConvictionsR-All-UHave2581 This was outside of Waco, TX. The General Manager was great to step up and take care of repairs. It was a new location in 2021 when the manufacturers were throwing things together as quickly as they could and it was difficult to find good, knowledgeable mechanics.
@@UrConvictionsR-All-UHave2581 Only because the GM stepped up to take care of things. It was not CW. If you're looking in Texas or have a guess, ask and I'll tell you if it was or wasn't them. Have you had problems, too? Or just trying to prevent them?
Ethical dirt bike salesmen here. Amazing how many customers want me to compare pricing when they don't have the OTD I need to match. GET THE OTD, it's all that matters when comparing dealerships.
As always great information. What you said goes for vehicle purchases. People need to research, research, research. A friend of ours quit a fairy large RV dealership because of their unethical practices. Josh if we were to purchase a new RV it would be from Bish’s in Texas, I’d be armed with all the information that I needed before we went. Josh there’s an old saying don’t trust anyone any further that you can physically throw them🙂
You can never win against a con artist. If you can't get an out the door price, if you feel they are being sketchy, get up and leave. They may follow you to your car with a better offer, but ask yourself if you can now trust these folks. Sure you want that shiny new RV, but they want your shiny new money. Trust me, there is ALWAYS another RV out there that you will love!
I told them I wasn't paying 995.00 dealer service fees. So, the dropped the price of the RV 995.00 and added them back in. I almost fell out of the chair laughing.
You are absolutely correct Josh. We saw a lot of this in the quest for the perfect RV. We were the lucky 20% that paid cash. We stuck to a budget. ASK questions and do shop multiple dealers. I had one dealer tack on a commissioning fee. I asked to itemize this fee, and he got mad at me. We did not buy there RV.
Good on ya Josh. Speaking the truth. When it comes to upcharge shenanigans, if your spidey-sense is tingling (ie: you are feeling the pressure, especially in the finance office), always remember you get to decide what you are willing to pay for. If you aren't willing to pay for it, tell them that point blank. If they tell you its not negotiable tell them they are correct, it is not negotiable to you either, thank them for their time and move on to your next dealer of choice.
Thank you. I know we have been ripped off. But couldn't get it thru my husbands head. I lost $5200.00 on that deal. That's one reason I hesitate buying again.
Josh you are right just like car salesman rv salesman same it's the interest on the loan plus title and the plate oh ya insurance crazy take care happy camping
I’ve mentioned it before, my biggest mistake was not buying from you. I should of drove East to Indiana not west to Missouri. Besides being fair, I believe you have knowledge on Embers or would of admitted you had to look it up. Flat windows are not an upgrade, but a supply shortage fill. I still steam about that.
@@JoshtheRVNerd we do now enjoy, but we hated our purchase at first. Once i got through the hype by UA-cam and salespeople lies and got great info after contacting Battle Born,MasterVolt and Go Power i am now very happy after learning about the solar system abilities. Once i learned the systems from their manufacturer people i have had my Ember running for weeks at my farm disconnected from solar only. I don’t get the short term investment by sales of; tell them what they want to hear to make a sale. Yes they make a sale, but after i went home and had many failures until i learned the truth of the capabilities, they have to know me or other customers will never set foot on their property again. And i sure not going to recommend them.
I appreciate YOU! Thank You so much, in the process of purchasing a B+ or C. The first dealer I went to commented I was a UA-cam watcher after I pointed out some manufacturing issues. haha. I'm guessing they see a woman and are surprised when we can identify possible issues or negotiate purchase contracts. Thank You for all that you shared!
Josh..... My wife and i would like to thank you for all the information you have taught us through the years through these videos. We just bought a new camper from Bish's in Lincoln Nebraska.( we live 3 hours away) And it was one of the funnest experiences we've ever had while spending a B#tt load of money LOL we went in knowledgeable of what we were buying and what we wanted !! But to tell the truth the guys at Lincoln was a pleasure to work with ! . The salesman and the Money guy was just fantastic to work with ! no nonsense no high pressure AND NO unseen numbers ! . Thank you Josh for all you do !!!!
I tried to buy a fifth wheel @ camper world Albuquerque NM I drove to the store 3 hours because they had a good deal but they are lying lying every word the trailer price was 34,999 at the end was 44,667.44 I didn't buy it from them will never buy a sewer hose from those ratas Thanks for the very informative video my GOD bless you
My Mom and I started paperwork on a Grand Design this weekend. The guy said "this is the price, these are the state taxes, and with the down payment, this is how much you will be financing." That was it. We still have to go back and go through the training session and pick it up, so hopefully everything continues the way it has so far.
My wife & I was looking at a Jayco 264BH a couple weeks ago. One of our local dealers had it for 27,995. They told my wife via text they would knock $500 off as a discount. Then a day later said they would knock another $500 off as a special. And said they couldn't go lower because they just got it. Less than 5 minutes after she told me. I checked the dealer site and they had already marked it down that $1k. Clearly showing he was blowing smoke. Then after all their "extra" fees it went from 26,995 to around 32,500. Needless to say. We didn't get it. I don't like liars!!!
Hi Josh, this is the second time watching this video. I’m so impressed that I told my wife this morning that I want to drive to Coldwater when we buy our next camper. And we live in Virginia! You’re the man Josh!!
Great information! wish I had seen this before buying our 2018 30' travel trailer. we got a "Free lifetime warranty" that after looking at it basically showed it was free only when you had a yearly "inspection" where you took the trailer in to the dealer and had it inspected. what they didn't tell you was the inspection was $179 each year + whatever they found wrong with the trailer that had to be fixed by them to keep the warranty in place. The dealership was sold a year after we purchased the trailer and the new owners don't honor the warranty. It was a short "lifetime".
Yeah those lifetime things are a racket Years ago had a company approach us about offering them and I really learned how they worked. There’s nothing free about it They’re designed to pump money out of a customer or void your benefits
@@JoshtheRVNerd Yeah, but on the other hand, why would I be wrong to think that if the $179 @richardsmelker2946 spent on an annual inspection turned up a refrigerator problem or something that was then fixed AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE, it was a good investment. What am I missing here?
Josh, I am so happy and thankful to hear you call out dealerships that encourage people to take out a 10-12 year loan on an RV that will be worth virtually nothing long before they even pay off their loan👍👍👍
I use to work in sales for an auto dealership, and I can't tell you how many BS fees the finance department would add on. I would actually lower the price on the used vehicles just to try and offset the fees. I also lost customers because the dealership wouldn't take off $500 on a vehicle when the customer could prove we were a few hundred dollars higher than the other guy. I felt taking advantage as a salesman by my employer. I eventually quit.
I had a Mitsubishi dealer try to add a "rare car fee" to an eclipse 😢 you know the Plymouth dealer up the street has the same car for less? They removed the fee
Almost all the dealerships in my area wouldn’t let me buy the one I wanted all out cash/check at one. They all said they were a volume dealership and make The money off financing the trailer not selling the trailer or some crap. I ended up driving over 5 hours to get a deal I thought was fair and let me pay it all at one time.
I guess your money really wasn't good there lol I'm the same way. I don't tend to finance much. When I bought my wife's jeep a few years ago the guy could not wrap his head around the fact I was going to write him a check from my personal check book and walk out with the keys to the car. "But our financing is so cheap!" ...is it cheaper than adding ZERO interest atop my purchase? If so, then I want to see that math.
Well just bought a 2023 jayco 174BH from Bish's and got suckered into $7500 worth of service contracts and for labor contracts tires, paint and even gap insurance...none of it I wanted and even told the manager that and still got it shoved in my face as the only option...and I signed off on it because I wasn't given a price without all the add on once I got home and started processing what had happened the more angry I got
Suze Orman would say "If you need to finance something more than 3 years, YOU CAN"T AFFORD IT". (Except house). And many people end up financing a nightmare.
Not necessarily true and most of the time doing it that way your credit would suffer long term (5 years) from doing that. I’ve never had any issues financing stuff for long periods with EXTREMELY low interest rates due to my credit score and credit history. For shorter term loans like you suggest sub 3 years, with my history and score I’ve never been quoted a interest rate higher than 3% on any purchase. To me it’s worth the small price of admission to further build my credit vs paying it in full immediately even tho most time I could. I understand what your saying but it’s not always the right choice to pay in full if you ever wanna have a super high score. Sucks I admit but it’s the world we live in and one day an emergency may arrive where we need to finance and if your credit history sucks you’ll have to take a high interest rate regardless because you didn’t play the system before hand. To each their own that’s just my outlook.
I always walk in to any dealer(car, rv) and say, how much it this, I don't want anything else, no extra warranty, no gap, no paint protection, etching, lojack etc. Every single dealer as soon as I get to financing, the person goes through the entire list of add on crap, then acts rude when I continue to say no. One place I seen a Ram truck, 29k miles, 18k, was good deal. Called, said I was coming to see it 2 hours away, 30 mins before I got there, they changed price to 22k, when I seen that. I found a online ad they forgot to change. So they honored the 18k but wouldn't let me use the $150 off coupon they text me. After I bought it, I left review then they starting calling me to resolve issue. Also they came out(I have 810+ credit) nothing financed, own my home outright, quotes me 8% interest to finance. I said never-ending, my credit union will do it a 2.75%, then they came back with 2.5%, hate the scammy crap.
Had a Regional Manager for a National dealer yell at me as I’m walking out because…. “$6,000 is what all dealers charge as dealer fees” My response “only the unethical ones”. The $6000 was just listed as dealer fees. Other fees were Destination fee of $2,100, Prep fee $995, Battery adjustment fee $ 295.😂 still lead acid battery Admin Fee $499 Almost $10,000 in extras, and they tried this with a straight face. Like they were serious. And would not remove them. This was in central Florida beginning of July.
As someone who sold cars for years. (I’m out of the business now.) I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! YOU ARE INCREDIBLE GOT SHARING THIS KNOWLEDGE! #nerdherd
When I purchased my RV the dealership told me upfront what the fees was and broke it down for me as in so much for detailing fee and tag/title fees and so on it was all tied in to the sale price and explained that's why there is a slight markup on their lot compared to others and even thrown in a 5 year warranty for free. The sales team also made sure I found exactly what I was looking for at a price I was happy with. also a service tech walked around the RV with me at time of pick up at no cost to make sure everything onboard was working properly and made sure I knew how everything works and operates. It was an awesome experience especially for a at the time first time RV buyer
Love you're posts about campers.. BUT this one frosted me. Better check out your Iowa store before posting anything like this again. We drove 4 hrs. last August, bought a BEAUTIFUL camper BUT we're STILL battling... First our credit score got slammed when they processed the loan TWICE so we had TWO loan accounts entered... 3 months to get fixed, THEN got letter from Illinois Dept of Revenue that the taxes were incorrect and we owed more, PLUS penalties!! A month now of assurances it will be fixed - IL says not done, more owed AND NOW cannot get return calls. Better stick with reveiwing campers cuz Iowa just screwed your rep.
For clarity - this doesn’t sound like a case of fees as discussed in the video. You’re describing a significant clerical error - something different entirely. Have you contacted customersupport@bishs.com? They may be a good contact for you
@@JoshtheRVNerd thanks for the suggestion. I was looking for some kind of corporate contact but couldn't find it... As always you've come through with useful info! Thanks!
Your videos are always very informative. Even my son (not Rver, not buying) loves your videos. Because of you I drove 5 hours to buy my Artic Fox 990 at Bish's. Thank you
Great advice. 40 year legal admin; every time we finished w/a client we sent them finals to "KEEP SAFE FOR YOU RECORDS". Inevitably, yrs later they'd call back, "do you have a copy, can't find mine". GRRRRrrrrr!!!! 😑
I've watched this video a few times, great information Josh. I share this video with lots of people that are thinking or looking into buying an RV. Hope you're doing well
I had a dealer tried to do that to me but I had the salesman text the information to me so took that to sales manager and they finally honoured the deal
And Mr Winters.. my Father. I am super super lucky. I have three good dads One brought me into the world One married my mother And I got the last one when I married my wife I've learned great things from all of them
Josh, don’t apologize for being on a soapbox about this stuff. I really admire you for it.
I appreciate that. I just hate being that guy that yells angrily at a camera on the dashboard of his pickup if you know what I mean
But i see these ugly practices EVERY DAY and it drives me nuts
When I bought my RV the finance lady offered a warranty that cost 25% of what the RV cost. I feigned a shocked look and told her I wasn’t told the RV was so bad that it would cost that much to warranty and stood up to walk out. Her reaction was priceless. She stopped trying to add stuff on.
Brad.... I'm borrowing that line!!!
Camping world wanted to sell me the 7 year warranty, I held out and got it for a third the price. Never say yes the first time.

@Russ Stringer I actually had a good experience with them I think its location dependent
@@Tool0GT92 There are several lawsuits that say it is a business practice.
This is legit like having a family member in the RV business. Priceless
Well I am your “Uncle Josh” after all 😉
Just purchased a White Hawk 29BH from Bish's (after visiting many other RV retailers) and found them to be totally honest with regard to fees.
Ross thank you so much for sharing this. I think it means a lot more coming straight from someone who's actually gone thru the experience!
From experience Camping world is creepy. Watch out everyone.
2here are you Josh? anywhere near southern California 😊
Camping World is THE worst! 💩 I wouldn't buy a roll of toilet paper from that company. 🤮
We have been through this the past month. They refused our "cash" and told us they HAD to charge us an additional $2000.00 for us to buy anything with cash. !!! How insane is that?
Josh
Thank you so much for all this information.
Sorry that was the case. Camping is supposed to just be easy
Good thing to know about camping world, have been keeping an eye on prices in Idaho on their website.
We have a camping world about 10 minutes away. I won’t even buy accessories from them.
We looking at Camping World and $ 2000 is part of deal and listed as Just Camping package!
CW tried to sell me an insurance policy on my aluminum wheels, it doesn't have aluminum wheels 😢
I don’t even own an RV of any sort and I’ve been hooked on this channel the past week since finding it. New favorite channel for sure
Wow ty 🙏🏻
I don’t even mind you mentioning someone else’s location here. I think this is nice to see
This is why you negotiate the out the door price.

Wingman Wisdom just told the story of a couple that bought a $200K motorhome that got scammed this way. If you find a unit, take a photo of the VIN and make sure it matches the contract.
I’ve had clients buy elsewhere have that happen twice in Michigan in my career. Both times on Motorhomes

A year later we have many happy camping memories so far and that will continue when I retire next year
Ty so much for sharing this!
Might see what I can do..
Location pls.
TY Tom :)
You’re spot on here
And sadly.. it works on a LOT of people
It's hard to get your money back once you've discovered that you've been swindled. It helps to have a mean, vicious lawyer who can threaten a lawsuit, and then back it up by alleging fraud in the inducement and treble damages. Filing a claim with your state's attorney general's consumer protection division doesn't hurt, either.
As someone who finances a lot(tow trucks) the gap has saved me more than once it's one of 2 things I'll get that and if I can't work
Okay, when you walk into the finance guy's office to buy a car, truck, or RV, just know they are the up sales guys.
Ty Richard. I hope the message spreads

NEARLY spit my drink out reading this dude
TY for the suggestion at the end as well. Was considering something like that as well
I'm so glad I found you.
I gained a lot of respect from my husband that day.☺️
Never be afraid to walk away.
Never leave those snakes a deposit.
I love these videos! I appreciate your efforts to inform the buying public. Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
My pleasure I hope it helps
Josh, you and Bish's are golden. This stuff goes on in the car sales world, but I had no idea how bad it could be in the RV world. Thanks once again for you and your company's outstanding integrity.

Is a lender allowed to require insurance coverage, the way a home mortgage company is?
Yes
Same some of the things seemed nice but we did say no to a lot of bullshit
Man sorry to hear it Mike. Ty for being willing to share
I don’t enjoy the buying experience either. My car is overdue for an update but I just don’t want to deal with it
I was in Camping world buying a part.
Its sad you had to get to that point even
When the salesman or especially finance manager asks “What do you want your payment to be?”after you ask for their best price, you should probably run as fast as you can.
This is all super fair
Me and my ex purchased from camping world, purchased a 32k, put 6k down. We were tired and hungry after the 3 hour process to purchase... didn't fully realize all the junk they added until later when it was settled and i realized the loan was for 42k. 🤯
Then i recently purchased from a local dealer 'buckeye rv'...and wow, the difference was night and day. Quick, simple, and not shady at all...only hitch, taxes and basic fees were added to the price.
When I bought ours, I called about 10 different dealers. I asked them all for a purchase invoice. That way I could compare.
You mention they lied about the term.. do you have anything in writing where they ever stated a different term before you signed something?
@JoshtheRVNerd Unfortunately no.
When we bought our RV we should have walked away. They charged us a prep fee. I questioned it and they said that when they get the RV from the manufacturer there is a lot that they have to finish. I had never seen that from any other dealer. I guess I really wanted that RV. In hindsight, I should have never signed on the line.
It’s pure profit for those shady dealers. Refuse to pay it.
I bought a used LR4 recently and there was a prep fee, I pointed out it hadn't even been vacuumed, destination fee, I came here, you didn't ship it, 😢
Thanks for sharing Josh! I just went to the RV show and it was funny listening to the salesman lie to me, so I pumped him up and lead him on and then told him the deal is off and I walked away. That was gratifying!
It’s unfortunate you were out into that position
May I ask what was said to you?
I think that Josh should be a must see video before anyone buys an RV. Why, because I have never heard a salesperson yet discuss weight. Their answer to the customer is always "oh yes that vehicle is plenty big enough", Just to make the sale, their not worried about tthe customers safety. Thank you Josh.
Man I try. Ty
There is not a half ton truck built that should be towing more than 5000 pounds otherwise you’re just wearing the truck out and should’ve bought a heavy duty truck. Do the math off the payload sticker on the door of the truck and you will see how much you should be towing!.
You rock, Josh
Too kind Bill. Ty
Very informative.
I worked for a Chevy dealer in Pa that used the word Volkswagen on a sticker to code the price to aim for and again what they had in it
So when we brought friends or family on the lot we could show them the lowest the dealer would go😊

At least they stepped up to fix the mistake on the camper. Sorry you had that experience overall of course

Good on ya Josh. Speaking the truth.
Good for you Kelley!
The sad part is how they even created a situation in which they had to notice "you were a youtube watcher"
That Nebraska team is super fun out there. Ty for sharing this. Please make sure you leave that store a google review!!
I tried to buy a fifth wheel @ camper world Albuquerque NM I drove to the store 3 hours because they had a good deal but they are lying lying every word the trailer price was 34,999 at the end was 44,667.44 I didn't buy it from them will never buy a sewer hose from those ratas
Thanks for the very informative video my GOD bless you
Love all of your videos and we learned a lot. Wish more people would do this to help out the buyers or their UA-cam followers.
Ty 🙏🏻
This video s/b required watching for ANYONE buying a RV or vehicle!!!!! GREAT WORK Josh!!!🥳🙌🏼
Love the info, I'll keep all of these in mind when we get us a trailer
Hope you don’t encounter the stuff I talk about here
My Mom and I started paperwork on a Grand Design this weekend. The guy said "this is the price, these are the state taxes, and with the down payment, this is how much you will be financing." That was it. We still have to go back and go through the training session and pick it up, so hopefully everything continues the way it has so far.
as long as it stays that way!
Glanced.. we have those new starting around 24... and don't do fees ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hi Josh, this is the second time watching this video. I’m so impressed that I told my wife this morning that I want to drive to Coldwater when we buy our next camper. And we live in Virginia! You’re the man Josh!!
We do have a small store in Richmond btw!
@@JoshtheRVNerd Thank you for letting me know. I had no idea👍
@@JoshtheRVNerd Thank you for letting me know. I had no idea👍
THANK YOU! I really appreciate this info.
Glad it was helpful!
Yeah those lifetime things are a racket
Years ago had a company approach us about offering them and I really learned how they worked. There’s nothing free about it
They’re designed to pump money out of a customer or void your benefits
@@JoshtheRVNerd Yeah, but on the other hand, why would I be wrong to think that if the $179 @richardsmelker2946 spent on an annual inspection turned up a refrigerator problem or something that was then fixed AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE, it was a good investment. What am I missing here?
Josh, I am so happy and thankful to hear you call out dealerships that encourage people to take out a 10-12 year loan on an RV that will be worth virtually nothing long before they even pay off their loan👍👍👍
10-12 years? That's old. I just was offered a 20-year note on a 2023 Alliance Avenue for 98k with 9.9%
I use to work in sales for an auto dealership, and I can't tell you how many BS fees the finance department would add on.
Definitely go in prepared for battle. We bought ours last year and what Josh said is true.
I wish this wasn’t good advice but.. you’re not wrong
Thank you for this. People need constant reminders of things like this.
Absolutely 💯 agree uncle Josh I have several dealers in my town and I would still drive 8+ hours to cw Michigan versus dealing with junk fees
Gotta love walking away with a grin knowing you will save money at a dealer of your choice.
I guess your money really wasn't good there lol
I'm the same way. I don't tend to finance much.
When I bought my wife's jeep a few years ago the guy could not wrap his head around the fact I was going to write him a check from my personal check book and walk out with the keys to the car.
"But our financing is so cheap!"
...is it cheaper than adding ZERO interest atop my purchase? If so, then I want to see that math.
@@JoshtheRVNerd when we upgrade next time. I’m coming too your place. I try and watch every video you put out it help so much.
Thank you ❤️, I love that you are educating people on buying an RV from a reputable company. They love to prey on the vulnerable.
TY Debra. Won't claim that either I nor Bish's are perfect but I'd like to think it's not for a lack of trying
Too bad @josh isn't her to read this.
Gap insurance isn’t that bad. Extra insurance if someone happens.
Suze Orman would say "If you need to finance something more than 3 years, YOU CAN"T AFFORD IT". (Except house). And many people end up financing a nightmare.
Suze was my financial guru. I retired early with no debt. She's the best! 😻👍
@@mattdagger1480 I don't finance ANYTHING. I don't care what my credit score is. You're always ahead when you don't pay interest.
@@BrittMFH So true!!
“$6,000 is what all dealers charge as dealer fees”
My response “only the unethical ones”.
The $6000 was just listed as dealer fees. Other fees were
Destination fee of $2,100,
Prep fee $995,
Battery adjustment fee $ 295.😂 still lead acid battery
Admin Fee $499
Almost $10,000 in extras, and they tried this with a straight face. Like they were serious. And would not remove them. This was in central Florida beginning of July.
Wow.. just wow
I would just laugh in their face. That is just outrageous. Who agrees to be ripped off like that?
Very informative video. Thanks
Very welcome!
If someone tells me they can’t give an out the door price, I wouldn’t even bother starting my truck. Good info.
👍🏻 good policy
#1 stay away from Camping World!
Your honesty within the sales Rv industries customers will be drawn to you and your company
🙏🏻
As someone who sold cars for years. (I’m out of the business now.) I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!
YOU ARE INCREDIBLE GOT SHARING THIS KNOWLEDGE!
#nerdherd
I try man. I/we aren't perfect. But I try
That’s great
Love you're posts about campers..
He's not so much pushing Bish's but giving us advice for buying anywhere. Not to say I don't sympathize with your situation.... That s*cks.
@@BrittMFH But, he did say that Bish's does not do shady practices.
@@nealblue6413 I know he did. I'm just saying, give him a break. He's trying to help us. Listen to the big picture.
Thanks!
