- Today we're exploring a side of the Maldives that rarely is pictured on UA-cam. You might know the Maldives for its pristine islands but there is plenty more that this country & culture have to offer ... one of them is the delicious local cuisine. Does any of you know what Filipino dish this is like? We loved tasting local breakfast here in the Maldives in Hulhumale where a lot of locals come. We also got happily surprised to meet Filipinos overseas during our stay - but that's for another video!! ;)

Hey guys.
Good to see you guys in the Maldives. First of all, the mixture of Tuna and coconut you ate is called Mashuni (mas means fish, huni means grated coconut). The bread is called roshi.
Then u ate bis keemiya(the dumpling with eggs). And in the end, you ate Foah(areca nut in English and supari in Bangladeshi). Most of the staffs in the place u last visited will be Bangladeshis.
Areca nuts are ate all over South East Asia. Some people spit it out. People tell it cleans your mouth. Keeps your mouth odour less. Some people eat it very less. It won't be the best experience to eat a lot of it in the beginning. 😂 People start it small, and you get used to it.
And most importantly, these food you get in these cafes will not come close to home cooked food. As they would add cheaper ingredients to make them less costly. Maldivian foods are awesome. You should eat a Maldivian lunch in a buffet once to experience the real taste of Maldives. 🤘
Or else, you can find someone to take you around, and tell them u want to experience the taste of Maldives.

Okay soo, it's roshi (flatbread) and Mashuni. You eat them together, it's one of the traditional Maldivian breakfasts. As for why there weren't women at the café, that's just how it has been, it's not that women aren't welcome, absolutely no one would say women aren't. But traditionally it's mostly men who goes to cafes, and the reason it's still like that is cuz many women feel embarrassed to go to a place where there's mostly/only men. Although there's really no belief of women not being allowed. Recently a feminist group even went out in the name of breaking that tradition and filled in a café with women :v

I just watched the full video and can tell that you assumed they they were locals. They are actually Bangladesh expats. There are no woman at the place you went is because it’s kinda “low” standard for them I guess...I am Maldivian and that’s honestly what I can say. It’s not that woman are banned in there or anything lol. Also that “toothpaste” thing is unhealthy AF to the teeth tho.
I think Maldives has a very underrated food scene, but we do a terrible job at selling our traditional food to outsiders. A lot of "Maldivian food tours" here on UA-cam have people eating continental meals at high-end restaurants, or tourists being suggested local delicacies (by expat workers as you stated) without any explanation whatsoever, as we see here in this video.

That's massoani and roshee bread. Good stuff. What you do is, you tear off a bit of the roshee and use it to scoop up some massoani, fold it slightly before eating that packet. Make sure you do all of that with your right hand.
It's always a good idea to try things with the locals.

There's no cilantro in Mashuni!!! it has locally grown leaves minced to it!! Its either kullhafilaa faiy (Idk the english name) or bondicopee faiy(Idk the english name)

Yeah, you gotta spit. I think that it kinda gives a bit of halucinogenic effect and that is probably why people eat it. If you spat it out you would have notice that your spit is colored red. It can be addictive and regularly chewing it will stain and ruin your teeth.
I remember having elders chewing NGANGA in Bicol. However, the NGANGA turns red when you chew it, then you have to spit it out.

Hehe the 2nd place u went was a cafe for men tho it's not officially for men but maldivian culture now have cafes where all guys hang out and eat.... women don't eat there bebause naturally by habit only men go to and eat there tho women will buy food for takeaway but never eat there unless no option.... that's the reason u were tho only female there.... think of it as a exclusive guys hang out cafe which women can eat but choose not to because there are always a lot of men there.... I know it's weird hehe... and probably the reason that place is so lively is because almost every guy in the area or even far would go there at lunchtime to hang out and meet their friends.... but there are many other places exactly same as that place around the country and some of them is mixed crowd of female and male customers instead of male majority.... tho I have never heard of female majority cafe like that place yet.... hope u enjoyed ur experience btw the thing u eat at last are nuts isnt like mint gum which u would eat after eating to get rid of the aftertaste and to improve breath....
Lol. You bare not supposed to eat the betel leaves and betel nuts. The powder is a clove powder. You are supposed to spit out the juice and continue chewing. If the put lime on the leaves, your moputh turns red. Some people also put tobacco in it.
Finally when you are stoned, you spit out the lot.

Yes maam" sir" we have similar dish and its called "Kinonot na pague (Pa-gi) its a mantarey fish boiled and shredded the meat or ki-nonot its called here. and cook with coconut milk its almost similar from what you have😊

The first one could be called chapati but it is locally known as Roshi (which roots from Roti obv). It is thin and normally made with refined flour. second one is what one would call paratha in the subcontinent, maldivians have also had it in their cuisine for centuries, they call it Faraataa.

Also, never, ever say roashee in the ear-shot of southern Maldivians who call it foalee. In the south, the roashee word means a woman's private part. Elsewhere in the Maldives, a foalee is a thin, pancake.

07:22 oh wow its fresh :D :D :D OMG this guys having really no idea. Even in Phillippines there are places where they eat betel nuts. Actually with the right mix its a drug to make hunger and pain away and when you check documentaries in Asia you will see lots of old people eating it and spitting red. Betel nut, lime, calcium, and the leaf.
The other stuff is called Mataba, its just some kind of Roti (pancake) with veggies but since the Maldives are Moslem Territory for sure not porkmeat. The best thing are the spicy fishballs, made with Turmeric and potatoes... i would die for these.
Best shop in Male was THE BLUE MOON CAFE a long time ago, i think it not exists anymore. was directly close to the harbor on beachroad. Been there first time in 1976 with my parents and worked there as a diving instructor later on for 3 years. When i watch now pictures of my Maldives NO THANKS i will never go there again. Messed up paradise. In 1976 it was 3 tourists island and all was in North Male Atoll...now there are NONE empty islands left... EAT YOUR MONEY PEOPLE as long as you can and drown in piece

well as a maldivian i have to say dont make assumptions about our food and restaurants just on the basis of this one video we have some amazing restaurants and cafes in our country..the places they were eating at in this video are known for being cheap roadside cafes that mostly local men goes to notice how there are no women there lol its because most maldivian women finds those places unhygienic and crass they might get takeway but will never eat at those places... although the snacks and tea those cafes serve are pretty good....
