Join the DR BOB SQUAD by going to / drbob and become an Honorary Member of the Dr. Bob Research Staff!
SCP 723 is a spiral stone staircase, hewn from ordinary limestone, contained within a ruined church located in England.
When ascended, SCP723 induces rapid aging in the case of living subjects, and decay in the case of non-living materials. This effect seems to initiate after the fourth or fifth step has been climbed, each subsequent step inducing further aging or decay respectively.

A staircase that ages the people who walk up it is a staircase made for immortals. The staircase is connected to an abandoned church. With the religious connections that the church makes, SCP-723 could possibly be a staircase to heaven that only immortal beings such as angels can go through.

Now this is an SCP I definitely don't wanna encounter. Not only does it rapidly age things, living or not, but living things that do the aging just keep walking up the stairs even if they don't want to and are actually disinterested/basically uncaring about the fact that they're rapidly aging.

    • @ArDeeMee

To be fair, there‘s nothing I can do about the fact that my own body is aging as we speak, so I think the skip has a mild memetic effect that mirrors the general acceptance we all have for the process of aging. I remember when I found my first white hair. Acknowledge, and move on.

Rapid aging is probably one of the most effective body horror scenarios for me, despite being one of the simplest: It's something that, ideally, you're going to have to go through, but at an unreasonable pace. I think what makes it particularly bad is that it's killing you, but by degrees. It's stealing TIME away from you.

    *Question 1:*
What happens if a person enters the staircase from the top through the damaged tower roof and descends downwards towards the ground-floor?
    *Question 2:*
Couldn't they just drill small holes in the wall at vertical one-yard-intervals in order to be able to push small exploratory cameras through them?

723 is perhaps meant to serve as an allegory for the journey of life, a winding spiral staircase that is simply one-way; the way of all things to be born, grow old, die, decompose, and disappear. With the fact it is all in a non-euclidian spiral staircase that could rival SCP-087, and you have a staircase that theoretically goes on forever, but factually ends when the individual does; with the world going on without them, leaving future generations to ponder what awaits them in the beyond. Interesting SCP. It almost seems like a "stairway to heaven". As they ascend, they grow older. Reaching closer to to the top, to the supposed "afterlife" as they grow old and die. This SCP being located at a church, could perhaps be a connection to "heaven" or an "afterlife". The odd behavior of the people who enter the SCP where they feel compelled to ascend is also notable. Perhaps a metaphor to how some people would like to live forever. To be immortal or to fight against time despite how futile it seems. The calm behavior while they age might be related to how people become wiser with age and accumulated experience, where people might come to terms with how their lives are near their end. The one thing which might not be consistent, might be how the clothes don't age, but that might be a narrative loophole. A real shame that not much info can be collected from this SCP due to it's time-altering anomaly, meaning the tests conducted on this SCP is minimal as well. Either way, that's just my interpretation of it.

At our current level of technogy, that drone would be using a nuclear decay battery. Those can only provide reasonable amounts of energy for a few decades tops. Too short a time span to get further up than human test subjects without fizzling out.
My bet would be on a mechanical camera, made from gold, that takes pictures on long-lived analog film. It could be mounted on a compact stair-climbing robot (also made from gold), which draws its energy from a golden wind-up spring.
Gold is highly resistant to decay and wind-up springs made from sturdy material can store kinetic energy as potential energy for movement indefinitely. Given the right mechanical wiring, such a device could be programmed to climb the stairs and to take a analog picture every so often.

@@epaminon6196 if you are looking for a sturdy spring, making it out of gold probably wouldn't be wise as gold is relatively soft for a metal, though you might be able to use it to coat/plate the spring to protect it

So since he was 15 before, it took 8 years worth of physical age for the apple to decompose fully? Maybe the stairs have a different effect on fruits, but then again, wouldn’t the maggots of aged 8 years, meaning they die?

@@KBgamer2010 _"From the exterior, the site appears to be in a state of disrepair, including the tower which SCP-723 ascends; however, this damage is not visible from the interior of the tower, though the staircase is still visibly worn. SCP-723 also appears to extend further upwards than the exterior architecture suggests."_
In the document, as you can see above, it said that from the outside the tower looks normal and decrepit, including the stairwell. Only after you approach this stairwell from the bottom it ascends indefinitely, more than what the height of the tower would suggest.
From that we can expect that the Foundation probably already tried to make someone descend those stairs from the top of that tower, but it simply gave no anomalous results. The anomalous results only trigger if you scale up those stairs from the bottom.
It's a non-euclidean stairwell that bends time and space.
I guess it's a bit similar to how SCP-087 works, or the Spiral Path SCP-001 proposal.
Basically, if there's an end to this stairwell, it's not located in our universe, if there is an end at all, it might as well go infinitely god knows where.
