I hope your Paraiso Verde is recovering😢 Funny that you repotted it in leca as I also bough leca today to experiment with some of my Hoyas. I am a complete beginner when it comes to semi-hydrophonic so I‘m kinda excited how my plants will react to their new medium. Lovely collections you got going on there. Maybe you could do a plant tour next time, if you haven’t done it already. Transitioning from Water to soil will definitely take a bit for the plant to grow soil roots but I am confident your Monstera will show some growth pretty soon🎉
Hey Christian. Haha that's awesome that you're giving leca a go. And don't worry, I'm a total n00b too when it comes to semi-hydro, but the results so far have been really encouraging. So, it's definitely worth it. I think something I'll run into in the future soon as an issue is pH and nutrient balance, but I guess I'll just watch the plants and let them show me how they're going. I'd love to do a plant tour but I feel like my collection is a total mess at the moment haha it's pretty much a closet full of variegated monsteras (see the closet jungle video) and 4 metal shelves in my living room. We're moving house in the next month so hopefully once we're in it'll be set up a lot better and I'll feel less self-conscious about it :D Lastly, yeah, I reckon you're right. Monsteras seem to be really resilient though so I think it'll be fine in a month or so and pushing out loads of growth.
My recipe for success with Alocasia is slotted orchid pots to promote airflow, Pon again to promote airflow, I use a small amount of Gold Leaf liquid fertilizer(1ml/1l water) with every watering and I keep things in a water resevoir so the moisture can wick up through the rocks. I have never lost an alocasia this way.
Every time I buy an Alocasia I tend to repot them. One I don’t trust soil the soil and they are airy enough. But every time I do. My Alocasia’s always will look stressed and sad I have two that I’m waiting to recover. I just bought the one I’ve been looking for yesterday and I refuse to repot it because of my experience with them. And 24 hrs later is flowering today. Glad I didn’t.
How successful do you find transfering to semi hydro directly from soil? I've had some rot issues before so I usually soak the roots for about a week in just water so I can see which ones won't make it and to absolutely get off all the soil which I can't seem to get off by just rinsing
SELF-WATERING pts system for alocasia…….it work amazing! All mine are set up that way and my black velvet has 9 beautiful big leaves! That’s my trick! Good luck
Hi! So good to see a fellow Aussie on a journey with Leca / Semi Hydro :) i only started this year and have learnt the hard way but have learnt good lessons. My fave genus is Alocasia and have them in Aroid, Leca or MAB and it really depends on their location, how thick their roots are or how mature/baby they are!
Damn that sucks. Wishing it a full recovery. Definitely needs a chunkier mix and you shouldn’t have any root rot issues later. All of my paraiso verdes get tons of water and they love it. It’s the one philodendron that I’m not worried about getting too much watering. Wish I could gift you some cuttings. Peace love and plant power! ❤️
Cheers, mate. And thanks for the advice. If it survives in semi-hydro and pushes out some more roots I'll transfer it into a way chunkier mix. Not sure what I was smoking with letting it stay in that one. Shoudl've checked earlier! Doh!
I put my alocasia in very ordinary soil without any perlite or so and put them on my highest and most unapproachable shelf to forget them at every watering 😅 but ja I just water them when the soil is completely dry . And they are standing in low indirect light
Love your videos. You let soil go down drain? And I like dry soil. Lol. And if you put pothos in with any plant,. Pothos have a natural rooting harmone
Thanks, Susie. I try not to let too much, but some of the fine stuff, yes... lol probably shouldn't, but I often use Drain-O anyway to clean things out. Yeah, I've done that with my M. siltepecana. I had a bunch of 35 cuttings in a jar and popped some other things in with them to help them root faster and it seemed to work.
Yeah.... being Australian and growing up in the 90s and 00s we were in drought a lot and my parents always taught us not to waste water. So even though now we're in like the 3rd or 4th year of La Nina here with loads of water, I'm still constantly slapping myself each time I waste it lol
They did really well and were growing fast, but got spider mites repeatedly for several months so I ended up just throwing them out as I got sick of the drama haha
Hey, mate. I haven't really used anything in the past besides just removing the root rot itself and changing the soil or other medium, though I have heard that H2O2 works as it kills microorganisms. Have you had a lot of success with it?
Hope you enjoyed the video, guys! Let me know if you have any funny/interesting plant killing stories :D
watching from the Philippines! ❤
What happened to the Philodendron Paraiso Verde one year on?
Just found your channel, great to see another guy into houseplants. Cheers from Chicago
Cheers, mate! Hehe yeah, trying to represent haha
Wow you have a beautiful collection! 😍
You're too kind, mate :) Thanks! Were you a fan of any of the plants in this video?

Another great video! Very informative! Thank you!!
My pleasure, mate! Thanks for dropping by!

Yeah seems to be a pretty common experience. Would love to know how they thrive in the soil mix they're usually in at the greenhouses.

Wow! You've got beautiful plant collection Sir!😍
Cheers, Renaloche! Where are you watching from? :D
@@petevsplants7516 hello Sir! Im watching from the Philippines!❤️
paraiso verde is a root-monster, they grow insanly quick roots!
Hopefully I can bring it back from the brink then hehe

lol
wondering where you get your chunky perlite mix from. i live in melb and cant seem to find any
Just Hydroponics in Geelong. I think it was like $35 for 100L.. There's a store in Hoppers Crossing and Mornington too I think.
You mentioned no new growth on the Monstera, it’s possible that it’s been putting the energy into roots first before making new babies ☺️
Yeah, it could be!
I do the same thing, bottom water with the run off water...we are quite frugal ☺️

Do you have an update on these PV in a future video?
Will try to do one soon. They're still alive, but green... lol
I pronounce the paradiso verde the same way. My husband is from Brazil as well.
Haha yeah, it's hard not to. It even has the accent in the same place lol Fala oi para seu marido!
@@petevsplants7516 meu marido fala oi! Have you been to Brazil?
How are your Alocasias doing? I recently moved mine to pon and they have been going off like a frog in a sock!!

U guys still have a Kmart??
lol still going strong, yep!
Do you use anything to treat root rot to keep it from spreading? I use diluted hydrogen peroxide.

I'm currently learning Portuguese on duolingo and paraiso verde is on my wishlist lol😁
