- Yakutsk is well known as the coldest city in the world. It lies in the far-eastern part of Russia, about 450 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. We made a tour around Yakutsk and show you how we live in such an extreme climate.

My dad used to work in Yakutsk. The stories he has from this absolutely amazing Winter Wonderland always blow my mind. He worked in Yakutsk for over 30 years in chemical engineering. He said drilling was basically impossible without very strong equipment. He brought us back a lot of beautiful furs, coats and hats. And in turn, he would bring with him a bunch of make up and perfume and women’s clothing and fashion stuff. He said the locals absolutely went nuts when he would hand that stuff out. He also said they have the best meat in the world because it has no parasites. This channel is so fascinating, thank you.
Chemical engineer from where?
it's good that your dad left Yakutsk lol, extreme people live here, extreme weather is here ;) and high prices for all ;)
He brought a bunch of gifts for women… yah, your dad was a player lol

I found your videos by accident and they’re fascinating! I live in Australia so how you live in Yakutsk is soooo different. I’d never heard of your town before I watched some of your videos! Outside toilet? Shower once a week in a sauna? Frozen eyelashes? Layers and layers of clothes? I couldn’t imagine it. I’m 63. I guess we never stop learning. Thank you for making these videos. 👋🏻
the worse thing she hasnt mentioned is how unpleasant it is to breathe if you dont have a a face cover the air is so cold you can feel ice crystals forming in your nostril and flash freezing in the back of your throat for a few seconds before it thaw, a face cover somewhat negates that since it retains part of the heat from the air your exhale thus heating up the next breath you take
I've never been to yakutsk but I've lived in very similar condition in northern Canada (Baffin island)
Australia is basically anti-Yakutsk
So after watching this I guess I should not complain about the heat here in Florida USA lol
The funny thing is I bet they have the same reaction when they watch a video about someone living in the tropical parts of Australia or the inland deserts.
No one like Australian that's what my mother said
That’s an interesting tidbit about the metal glasses. I stopped wearing metal frames when I moved back to Arizona for the opposite reason. If you spend time outside the metal can heat up. I’ve found small burns on my face from metal frames after spending too long outside. Super fascinating.
Fast fact: It's not that the metal heats up more than other objects in a hot place. It's that metal has a very high thermal conductivity so that if the metal touches your skin on a hot Arizona day then it will rapidly transfer its heat to your skin. A piece of cloth at the same temperature as the metal would not burn your skin because cloth doesn't rapidly transfer heat.
For Yakutsk on a cold day the situation is reversed: Metal contact is then dangerous because it can rapidly transfer heat away from your skin.

I’m originally from Hungary so we share quite a bit of history with Russia (and the late Soviet Union). My whole life I’ve been so fascinated by these places all over Russia, and Yakutsk has been on my bucket list for ages. I lived in Finland for 5 years and I was so close to Russia yet I never had the chance to visit, I’ll forever regret it :( I just hope one day I’ll be able to visit! Love your videos! Cheers from Melbourne, Australia :)
finally, a man who does not judge the giant federation just because of politics
because hungarians do originate from where it's currently russia right
@@yuanruichen2564
Right, from certain point of view. The origin of the Hungarians goes back to the territory of today's Russia. But the conquering Hungarians who arrived (from the the present day territory of Ukrain, Moldova, Romania) in the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century were already very mixed population (Hungarians, Turks, Slavs, etc.). Since then, the mixing has been continuous. For example, I am Hungarian, my name is of Slavic origin (Croatian), but most of my ancestors were Germans and Hungarians, and who knows what other.
But if we go back to the first part, or the middle of the holocene (around 6-8 ka) I would see that probably most of my ancestors were Central-European hunter-gatherers (descendants of the late pleistocen European population), and early immigrant farmers from the Middle-East.
@@istvanmilinko7162 that makes me always wonder for how diversive nations are, especially in europe. i think there really no point of comparing or even counter any of them. its a shame that nationalism is still present in this days. i want to jump into future, where we all are just "earthlings"

I fell inlove with this City. I've been binge-watching every videos here on YT about Yakutsk. It's like I wanna go visit someday but scared that I might not take it. I'm from Philippines and we never experience snow here so it's kind of a dangerous thing to do, for me. Nevertheless, I love the your City and the people 💓
Come to Canada not as cold 😉
You could go in like September when it's only like 0 that's not too bad. I was born in new Zealand and moved to Minnesota, and as long as I'm bundled up properly I'm usually ok. "There is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing"
Always welcome! But the best time for visiting is August
I'm also binge watching Yakutsk videos near Washington DC 😂
Everything is very beautiful on video, but when you live here, it's not true, it's not because of the frost, because of the infrastructure, when diamonds, gas, silver are mined in this Republic, but at the same time the city looks like an apocalypse in the walking dead
Thank you for your video. I am from Hawaii. I am in the extreme opposite of your city. Thank you again for your video.
I love to see Dyana, she lifts my mood 1000%.
I can't imagine myself how can I survive living at temperatures around below 0C. We live above the equator (Philippines) where temperatures are around 26C-36C. The coldest that we get is between December-February at 19-21C.
I salute those people who really manage to survive cold temperatures. Hands down and all my respect are with them.
it's better than you would think. I can't imagine living in constant summer.
@@nicka33 probably, its mind over matter. :)
I was born and raised in a very cold climate. I can't stand temperatures above 25c. It just becomes miserable to me. -20c to 15c seems to be my preference. I have a friend from the Philippines. His mom has a house with no walls just screens they can remove. They live on the Luzon coast and the sea breeze makes things beautiful. Winters in Russia are an adventure and worth the experience.
@@Scrat335 I also live in the Luzon Islands. Honestly our average temperatures are around 25-35C. Normally, we have windows open to feel the breeze of air when its cold. The coldest we can have is at 21C during December to February.
I would always prefer 26C-36C temperature. The coldest i've experienced is 6C and couldn't stand it.
I'm not jealous of the cold (I live in a desert climate) but I love how accessible public transportation is in Yakutsk!
When I wait for my bus, it's like waiting for the seasons to change. Too long!

As someone who has lived in Alberta, Canada (and adapted to the climate, for the most part) for 13 years, I think I’d do fairly well in the Yakutsk climate; it’s just colder there for a longer period of time, whereas, here, we only hit cold snaps of between -30 and -40 occasionally during our 4-5 month long winter. But the short winter days, same deal here. I’d love to visit Yakutsk one day; looks like something that must be seen to be believed…

Wow that’s extreme, hardly any sun during winter and super cold as well. This is a place you definitely have to grow up in. Wonder what’s it’s like for someone that lived their life in Yakutsk to migrate to a warmer all year around climate near the equator. Must be like moving to another planet
In fact, in summer we sometimes even get a little hot (above 30 degrees), and usually a little above 20 degrees, so there is not much difference. Unless we have more dry than wet.
@@GuyFromTheFarNorth Talk about something to look forward to in winter! Love seasonal weather for that reason
Moving to Oklahoma is like that. Everyone in Oklahoma thinks they're colder than Antarctica. True, most cold is so brief followed by such long warmth your body can NOT adapt.
The thing is, anyone who sees snow not melting for a month or so, doesn't miss the light. As long as the sun shines for an hour the snow mirrors it back for a double dose. The colder the better for the light is more beautiful.
Well, I like your name Shackleford. I migrated from a northern northern state to a south prairie one. Thr biggest impression is that I've moved to a planet of stuck-ups who think their weather is the toughest on earth. They could say to a penguin "oh you must be freezing out here." Now, hardly any sun: I once didn't believe on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) because if the sun shines a few hours you get a double or triple dose from the snow.
As someone who lives very close to the equator, the other way around would certainly feel like that haha. We only have 2 seasons: winter and rainy. And our temperatures all year round range from 10 (in the coldest region maybe a little lower) to 35 (mind you only in the hottest region) so overall very mild weather all year round.
Edit: temperature is in Celsius lol i think that in Farenheit sounds crazy

I am so fascinated by how similar you look to First Nation people of the Americas. Of obvious reasons.
But it is fascinating how clear it still is.
If I were to swap places with a Yakutsk resident…they will have no problem living in a big city with mild weather while I will struggle to adapt to their harsh environment. So I really admire them.
I came across your channel randomly and now that I'm watching every video one after the other...each videos has something new to tell about Yakutsk, and makes me want to watch more. Everything about the video is great the presentation, narration, videography, edits. Thankyou for letting us know such a place actually existed.
wow another great video. your friend Dayana is cool too! that must have been fun to make. I loved the singing in the ice sculpture museum, there was such a wild and soulful quality about it.
Thank you Dayana for this video. It's amazing to see how people manage to live in such cold weather. And you are so beautiful. 😍
When i think im cold at 10 degrees farenheit, i cant imagine how i would feel there.
Great content keep it up 👍
This is amazing! Now I want to visit Yakutsk!
lovely fascinating and touching... The inner warmth and sincerity shine through warmly through the cold!
Such a beautiful and peaceful place to live love it
This is so absolutely amazing, I would think that someone who visited this place would be in great danger if they were reckless and didn't pay special attention to locals on how to survive, and is this climate indeed colder than both poles, on average yearly. Btw this is so very fascinating. I think growing up in Philadelphia, the coldest I can remember ever being is around minus5 or so, I guess these folks would have called that sweater weather.
There is only the North Pôle & the Artic.
No Globe.
There are parts of Antarctica that are colder but they don’t have any people that permanently live there just scientists that stay for part of the year. The Yakutia area is the coldest place where people actually live.
nah, not really. Summer here is very hot (30 C) and dry, so it would feel like cold, but not deadly surroundings

Your channel is so fascinating! Unlike any other. Thank you!!
