The protagonist simply means the main character we follow the story with. It has nothing to do with whether they're good or bad, a protagonist can be any. Some examples are Tony Soprano and Walter White. They're not heroes or good guys either, but they're still the protagonist cos they're the central character we follow. Light is a villain protagonist. He's considered an anti-hero protagonist to some.. but naah I personally say he's a villain. With his sociopathic traits a superiority and god complex.. yeea there's no way this combination can be a good thing lol
@@Grimjr7 That is true, I didn't mean to say those traits alone make you a villain. But Light's actions along with those traits are what make him a despicable villain.
Fun fact: The Japanese like to abbreviate words a lot more than we do. "Note" is commonly used as an abbreviation of "notebook". Actually, the name "Light" wasn't _intended_ to be a metaphor. The actual "meaningful name" is his family name, "Yagami", which is written with the characters for "Night God". The name "Light" is actually written with the character "Moon", but with a different pronunciation (which happens quite often with Japanese names).
2:41 Then I would also recommend 'Attack on Titan' and 'Berserk'. Those are great. Some parts can be hard to watch in both, mind you. Particularly in Berserk.
I mean most anime and manga are written by dudes who make their incel like characters get chicks.. so yes lol most protagonist have hot chick heads that fawn over them despite them showing zero interest
@@infctdppt I wouldn't say most, even though I do agree that there's a lot and that's why harem and reverse harem are a genre lol. But Death Note is definitely an exception, Light is handsome and a masterful manipulator, he shows just enough interest to deceive Misa and the others.
Light is definitely the protagonist, he's the main character. Typically main characters are good natured, but they can be bad, too. That means the good people going against his are the antagonists. You could still say he's the villain written as the protagonist.
A couple of things: 1) I understand the desire to understand the spoken words in your native tougue, but there are very few studios/directors that push their actors to come anywhere close to the inflection/emotion of the original voice cast. So you're really seeing the anime with a MUCH less character appropriate vocal sound... Since Japanese is intoned rather similarly to English (primarily in that the tonal inflection only changes the emotional impact or emphasis of the word, rather than multi-tone languages like the Chinese languages, which intonation actually changes drastically the meaning of the word itself), you get a real feel for the character's emotion/motives as well as 'presence' in the original language. (there are exceptions, like Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, but they're VERY rare) 2) Ryuk is an entity we don't have in Western culture: a shinigami. Literally, a God of Death. It's been translated in Bleach as 'Soul Reapers', but that really doesn't cover the intent. They are literally the spirits that guide the dying through death and to the afterlife. Modified here to be creatures that BRING death, and prolong their own lives by shortening the lives of mortals as they see fit. The empty, boring waste of the world of the shinigami is showing that after millennia, most shinigami don't even pay attention to the mortal realm, and rarely ever bother to even check themselves to see if they still have a long 'life' supply, thus the small number shown. Many have passed on, simply due to apathy, and not bothering to 'top up' their life force... Last thing: Do not just jump across all the genres of anime willy-nilly! It is really important to have a grasp of your types of enjoyed entertainment, then carefully pick shows that will slowly introduce you to anime memes and tropes. As you get more comfortable with less 'dark' anime, THEN start looking at lighter anime, and once all the art styles and tropes become familiar, ease into comedy, as Japanese humor often has twists that westerners may find offensive or off-putting, and you don't want to get turned off all anime just because you jumped the gun on moving to different types. Keep to Seinen (the more 'adult' titles: Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent [if you don't mind things getting a little confusing], even Initial D for the cg racing.) to begin with. More grown-up sport titles may be fine, if you're into sports. Otherwise serious dramas and the like. Then on to a little lighter (in art, at least) like Psycho-Pass and A Certain Magical Index, though Index may be a bit much, but if you can accept magic and science at war, you're in. And with the Rail/Dex group of series (can be watched in order broadcast, but the chronological order may help keep things organized in your head) that lets you move into the brighter styles, while still keeping more serious stories...by then, you will most likely have started to get a grip on Japanese humor, without even noticing it. So lighter humor shows and some isekai should be fine. Once you have found yourselves laughing openly at anime humor, you can start in on some lighter/sillier anime, eventually being ready for such zaniness as 'Nichijou' and 'Ninnin ga Shinobuden'... IF you stay interested in anime that long. It can be a great journey with HUGE rewards if you stick to it, and don't overload yourself so you burn out. Good luck, and enjoy the ride... 😃👍 (edit) Ok, it's been too long since I watched Death Note, so I forgot that Ryuk lays the whole Shinigami thing out for 'Light' early on, but I'll leave my original blather in place...
Light's name is even more ironic given that his family name Yagami is written with the Japanese characters that mean Night God. Anyway enjoyed the ride and welcome to the world of anime.
