I live in central Illinois and our elderly neighbor's son baught one in a pot that was already 18-20 inches tall in California and planted it here in Illinois in late April last year. By late October it had grown a foot.
And 100 years later someone will decide to cut it down... because some solar panel won't get enough light. I know someone that cut one of these down because he thought that doing that would actually RAISE the value of his property... In my minor opinion it's the exact opposite.

475 cm = roughly 15 feet 7 inches. Great! Keep making updates every few years. I hope there is something to protect them from being cut down or damaged. But then any sort of sign might attract unwanted attention or intentional damage/destruction. Maybe best to stay incognito.
@@Nephila23 yes it rains very much here. I meant coast redwoods need more water than giant sequoias. And actually, most of the water they receive comes from fog, which condenses on the trunk, and waters the tree. So, there really isn't any place on the earth that receives enough rainfall for coastal redwoods.
Coming back to this history. What a magnificent effort, Martin. Congratulations. We hope to follow the updates on this beautiful tribute in the years to come.
They are already tall but not even as tall as most mature european trees, it’s kind of a amazing thing to think that those trees will easily outgrow a flat. Nice to see they can grow and live in the Netherlands(i’m from there)

Thank you very much for making me dream with your video and work with those two wonderful young trees! I'm watching you from New Caledonia South Pacific. Is it possible to have picture of them of today?
I live in the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, in Bucks county. One of my neighbors has an absolutely gorgeous enormous trees on one corner of his lot. One day I asked and he told me it was a sequoia (at least a hundred foot), that was planted 35 years before. Another 35 years and they’ll have to move the house.
Yes boys and girls, this is why you don’t cut down trees unless you absolutely have too, because they take generations to regrow back. Hard to watch those cut down great trees that took 100 years to grow.
When visiting the Okeefenokee Swamp in Georgia (USA) in the 1990's I picked up some bald cypress seeds and then planted them on the bank of my pond in South Florida. One is now at least 5 feet tall. This does not seem so remarkable except that all of the cypresses in my area are pond cypress which are much, much shorter at maturity. This one will be the giant of the neighborhood. It was an experiment on my part. I had learned that cypress seeds should be planted in soil that will be wet or damp for at least 3 months. I don't own that property any more but I visit the next door neighbor; you can count on me to peek over the fence to see how it's doing.
Sure, but keep a close eye on them. They need CONSISTENT moisture. Like water them every day. Rain alone won't be enough. They grow well on a small strip in California, due to the summer fog in the area.
The Sequoiadendron giganteum (giant sequoia) is grown in all zones. Zones refer to climate. Extreme environments like low desert and far north present challenges for the sequoias. Specimen sequoias can be found in most climates indicating that the species is remarkably adaptable. A sequoia can suck the ground dry on a warm day. If there is no natural means of replenishing the soil moisture consistently the grower must supplement the sequoias with irrigation. Failure to keep the soil moist results in a dead tree. Sequoias require moist, rich, balanced ph, and well-drained soil. Permanently swampy or muddy soil will not work. For more info: see: www.giant-sequoia.com/faqs/giant-sequoia-landscape-questions/
Nice to see this tree growing. To bad it was shaded by the other trees in the first part of his life. You should bring some friends for him there. I waiting to see the update btw :))

I planted my own sequoia seeds a couple of weeks ago and yesterday I saw the first little sprout. Hope they survive and get big and beautiful like yours. I own several giant sequoias and they are completely frozen right now. I was worried that they would not survive this winter,. Watching your video, I think they will be fine. All that snow and ice covering your sequoias is about the same amount that are covering mine right now. Right now its mostly inch amount of ice.
Ask at your local garden center or else online. Or look for some older sequoia trees in your area. Under the trees you sometimes see cones with seeds. The older the tree the better.
Sequoias get so immensely big, and live for such a long time, that you would think they'd be very slow-growing. In fact they grow quite vigorously, as we see here when these two got into the ground.
From what I’ve read, this tree will eventually struggle in this area. Part of the reason they strive in the northwest is the fog. The trees grow so tall that they struggle to pull water up to the top. The fog provides much needed moisture for the canopy. They won’t have that in most areas.
These two trees won't be tall enough to have that problem for a great many years / decades / centuries, and I suspect they would just cease getting substantially taller if the transportation of water to the crown was becoming too difficult.
That sounds like the related Coast Redwood ( Sequoia) to me- not this species ( Sequoiadendron). Coast redwoods live ( as the name suggests) much closer to the coast in Ca, where fog is a much more common occurrence than inland at higher elevations- where Sequoiadendron is native. Sequoiadendron ( also known as Giant Sequoia, grows well in much more variable conditions around the world. I could be wrong, but I do grow multiple trees of both at my home in Washington state

If you wanted to grow faster every four months you want to get tree branches some types of woods put it into a fire pit burn it but don’t burn it to ash. The more chard wood you have Plus chopped up twigs and organic plants lay it around the base of your tree like mulch which protects the roots keeps the roots warm also it’s just like a natural forest. There’s always vegetation on the ground which feeds the tree. You’re not putting any compost around the tree to feed the tree it’s just living off the ground in the grass. You need for us vegetation around that tree to feed the tree with roots and composting soil. Which will help the tree prosper year after year and grow quicker faster taller
