What a precious sight to see your children running and laughing in the rain. That really touched me. Y'all have shown all of us that trials and tribulations are going to happen to all of us but you can do more than just survive, you can thrive in the midst of it. Your garden looks amazing and I'm learning about chicken breeds and Jersey cows. Great video!

I miss my golden comets!! They were so curious and had to supervize everything I did in their yard. If they got out, they would come to back yard gate and wait for me to come out and wait for me to put back in their run!! I though my were very smart and quirky personalities!!Loved them!

We had a “house chicken” - she’d come peck on the door. My husband would let her in and make a pb&j sandwich. He’d go sit in his chair and she’d jump up on the arm and eat crust. She never messed in the house. We had a picnic and my mom was sitting in a lawn chair holding her hamburger. I saw the house chicken making a beeline to my mom. I couldn’t yell fast enough and the chicken jumped in the air, grabbed the hamburger and took off😁 My mom was scared and mad at the same time- the rest of us were howling. House chicken was very happy.

But that’s one of the beautiful things about this community isn’t it? We don’t have to figure it all out ourselves, we can share our knowledge and needs and have someone else be able to use our knowledge and help solve our concerns. We make each other better homesteaders.

I was thinking this same thing the other,, You tube has been one of the greatest things that has come along for people. I do not know what I would do without it. It is my daily entertainment and source of knowledge. feel as though I am talking with real friends when I comment. And
when I get replies from homesteaders I then know that I am connecting with friends.

Joyful is becoming quite the cook....I didn't even know what a quiche was at her age. Your cow finally got up saying "obviously we are going to be here all day if I don't give up and get up"' Hahaha. The new chickens are very sweet, it is so nice the kids can handle them and have them be so gentle. Thanks for saying the birds will find and dig up the peas. I am going to plant some today when it quits raining. I hope I can find something around here to cover them with. Thanks for sharing part of your day...stay well and have a Blessed day.

I found an idea for covering plants that can be very cheap. I found some sheer curtains at the thrift store and they are huge and work well for row covers to keep birds and bugs off. the hems allow me to put heavy rebar or wood strips into and it holds the curtains down to protect from the wind. So far so good! It is an experiment to see how long they last. I see your oldest has what I told my kids is an angel kiss. A child is very special to be kissed by an angel. My youngest has an angel kiss and he is special.

I live in a bigger city now (Moved here 6 years ago, was on family land before that). So I had to learn to citystead. I grow tons of food in my yard. However like you I spent YEARS loosing seeds to birds. THEN an OLD OLD lady at the farmers market told me to "Just feed the birds bird seed and old bread so they dont want the seeds in your garden." So now for the last 2 years now I have not LOST ANY seed to birds. I have found that I get the best results of anything when I find myself an OLD lady and ask her what she would of done back in the day. MOST of the time. IT IS RIGHT ON. So again. BIRD SEED AND OLD BREAD. That way they dont need your garden seeds.

thebovineavenger you’re absolutely right, I live on a 5 acre hobby farm. I absolutely love feeding the local birds, squirrels and rabbits. Last year I planted a huge garden and never had issues with the critters eating my seeds. But my neighbors came over one day and asked “how do you keep the wildlife out of your garden.” I wasn’t sure and never gave this much thought until I was asked. Then I realized it’s because I feed them away from my garden. I will even pick the nasty bugs off of my plants and throw them around the bird feeder. For the Robbins, and barn swallows

@@countrygirlxo7188 💖💖💖 Yes, they will always go for the easy food and leave the stuff that is more diffiult to get at alone. I cage or fence every plant until it is old enough to withstand herbivore pressure, but I also throw out enough scratch and feed for bot my birds, the deer and the wild birds. So far, so good.

Cheryl Bertolini I agree.. those children are getting priceless life skills. 😊 Children going through the everyday challenges and chores of REAL life. In my opinion, that is how we become competent and confident individuals. The current lifestyle of most of our children is so far removed from the realities of life and death. So many cannot cope as adults. I am so thankful that I grew up on a small WNC farm...working right along with parents and siblings. I was cooking on a wood stove when I was seven years old!

I had golden comets for years. They like people, I think. Mine were friendly and mellow, easy to pick up or catch because they'd come when I called. My son was 4 and used to put them in his Little Tykes coupe car and drive them around the yard. They're lovely chickens.

    • @embyrnes5777
      @embyrnes5777 4 роки тому

They're fabulous at catching snakes. Mine used to run to the rock walls when I let them out in my yard, poke their beaks into all the holes around the rocks. Clucking all the time, so excited. It was they're daily game, like Candy Crush or something. One would find a snake, snap it up and eat it. Reminded me of someone slurping spaghetti. I'm a non-snake liker, so another reason I loved my girls. People who get golden comets will end up naming them. We did. They're just that friendly and nice for hens. They lay for a long time, at least mine did, 5 years, one old girl laid for 6 years. They're not very broody, though, but put a bantam hen in the mix, and she'll sit on everyone's eggs, hatch them and raise them.

Last year I planted 125 strawberries and muchled them with wood chips. (I live about 20 minutes from Paul Gautschi, the Back to Eden gardener, and have mulched with wood chips since 2012). They did very well! I didn't know about keeping them from fruiting the first year, but that make sense because I do that with fruit trees - d'oh.
My favorite breed of chicken is the Dorking. Sweet, loving, brave. They are a dual-purpose (mostly meat bird) heritage breed. Excellent foragers, excellent mamas. They've been homestead birds since the Romans brought them to England, so for about 2K years.
It helps to feed chicks meal worms every day by hand - they'll love you so much and come running to your hand in the brooder, and when they get older, too.

Hi. Bri. About 35 years ago the birds was eating my seeds & starts as fast as we planted. Then I got this idea. Never have had them stealing my seeds ever again.. I save all foil pans or old shinny soda cans. Then I take clear fishing line & hang all up & down the fence at different heights. THE birds hate the reflecting light & the noise a cans and pans banging against the fence. THIS HAS WORKED FOR 35 YEARS NOW.. GOD'S BLESSINGS

I love my Golden Comets. I have Black Australorps & Golden Comets & by far, I prefer the demeanor & intelligence of the Golden Comets. They come when I call, I can point at something & they look where I'm pointing. They're great foragers & fearless & mine were better Brooders, but I only have a tiny flock. One of my Golden Comets, named Red hatched some Guinea chicks...only 1 of 2 made it, but Red was a great mama & that Guinea is now smarter than the rest of the Guinea because of Red's mama-skills. They are not a great size for meat, but they are amazing egg producers & their eggs have consistently been larger than my Australorps. If ever I'm down on my haunches, Red will jump up & perch on my shoulder. I love them.

Your way of teaching reminds me of Montessoris hands on learning. I worked as a assistant guide and it was the most awesome way to learn. 💕

I will have to try out a few Golden Comets. I had a Delaware from Cackle Hatchery that was a hoot! She would be up on our deck looking in the back door waiting for her oats every day. I really miss her. She brought me lots of entertainment :)

They are the sweetest one, they jump up in our coop to greet us. I gave to friends because they were inside and not able to be loose, quit laying, friends had 8 chickens so they got them. Good for kids.

Great to see the whole family involved. Garden is looking good-- hope when all the craziness of the home remediation begins you can keep up with it. Seems to make a great distraction for Bri and the kids-- she looks so happy out there. Can you update us on how your ham is curing please?

Art, at the end of the video you worded it a bit strange. They thought you meant you were gonna stop making videos rather than ending this particular video.

Thank you for allowing me to visit today. As always it is an enjoyable way to while away some time. I love seeing you and yours on your farm. It is often insightful and eyeopening not to mention educational. The chooks look real fine and it's lovely to see your kids unafraid of them. Especiacially the little one feeding worms to them through the fence. You n yours are in my prayers for safetly and health and happiness. Thank you so much for sharing. God Bless you all. Hugs.

Your recent videos radiate peace and happiness. Love seeing the work in the garden, the happy children, and Bri's smile! I also appreciate the shots of all of the plants, as I am in Maine and we are still on the cusp of spring, it is so nice to see green plants! Hope you are safe and well Art in your work as a nurse.
