I remember over 60 years ago (how'd I get this old?) my mother killing a copperhead on our concrete front stoop. It was big and was sunning itself. With 7 kids my mother wanted it gone. She managed to chop it off hear the head. My father thought she over reacted and was likely a nonvenomous type. He went to look at it in the brush where she'd thrown it. He came back and hugged her and said I shouldn't have doubted you.

I had an aunt and uncle who lived in a beautiful spot in Kentucky. They had 2 chicken houses and every year copperheads would nest under the houses. My aunt would pull them out from under the chicken houses and chop their heads off with a spade. She was a much braver woman than I will EVER be re: snakes!

If you like rats, get rid of the snakes! If you'd rather the rats instead of finding snakes....then encouraging snakes(preferably garter/nonvenomous) is your smarter option!

Excellent video Bri and whoever is the camera person! You handled the snakes extremely well. I have known people who could not have stayed and planted the tomatoes because their fear of snakes was so intense. I am not afraid of snakes but I definitely have good respect for the poisonous ones. I love that they eat many pests in the garden.
Nice job on planting the tomatoes too, the only thing I do differently is removing the lower leaves and suckers.
We did truck gardening in both Kansas and Missouri when I was a child, we grew large amounts of many vegetables, I am 67 years young and still raising milk goats, a lot of chickens, turkeys, pigs, and of coarse many guinea fowl because I am afraid of ticks and Lymes disease.
I truly enjoy your video family, farm, life. You are far braver than I am because you put yourselves on the line for the world to see the good and the bad! Thank you!

A fabulous farmer showed me the 'trench' method. It keeps the roots closer to the heat by digging a shallower trench in which the plants can be gently guided to a vertical position. It's easy to get them deep enough and uses the compost to its fullest.

same here . also I was taught at an early age (70 now ) to remove any leaves that would be buried . to reduce the possibility of disease.

At least he is there to protect you. I would’ve been there by myself scared to death, takes forever for me to get nerve to go back where there’s been a snake. I’m a coward.

It makes me feel soooo much better to see another gardener so afraid of snakes. We found 3 this weekend and I literally peed my pants!!! I’m in Arkansas and it’s been super wet here so I’m sure that has something to do with the number of snakes we’ve been finding. ✌️❤️

My grandfather planted his tomatoes plants on their sides for more roots and up and down like you have done because of the wind that we get here. His gardens were beautiful too. He planted everywhere too.
The snakes are your friends. I remember one day I was washing and I had to do it by hand and I had the water going in my flower bed next to where I was washing and I looked at it very hard to see what kind it was a it wasn't a rattle snake it was just a bull snake who will kill a rattle snake and they are cousin to each other. So I just let it go and let it take it baths.
Loves and hugs from the little old lady in New Mexico USA. May God bless you and your family

I am so afraid of snakes!!We had a beautiful cabin on a lake. I found a big snake in the walkout basement in the living room. I would not go back downstairs after that. Then I was cleaning the carpets upstairs and reached under a chair to move what I thought was a extension cord and grabbed a BIG green snake!! I was so weak I almost fainted!! I finally got a bucket with a lid and used a snake catcher and got him! We had to sell the cabin because I just could not sleep there anymore. I just knew a snake would be in the bed. After we sold it my husband told me he had caught snakes in the house a few times and got rid of them so I would not know they were in the house!! I also was working in my garden one time and we had a big sheet of metal roofing laying on the ground and I went to move it and there was maybe 50 snakes under it!!! Me and my shovel went crazy so I really understand how you feel about snakes!!! I know they are good for some things, but just not for me!!

Arthur & Grace to the rescue! Totally agree, too many snakes in the garden. But the silver lining may be that it means your garden is thriving, attracting little rodents, and providing prey for the snakes. Your pasture rotation appears successful. That grass looks so healthy & green!

Your just like my wife ! She is so scared of any snake. She doesnt take the time to determine if its a poisonous kind but takes the hoe to it. Her motto is "if its in the woods it lives, but if its in the garden its dead.

My hubby's back is worse this year, so me and my son have to take care of the whole garden. I know that the lower leaves of the tomatoes have to come off-everything below the first fruit set. My hubby never wanted to do it, so this year we are doing it. One day he came outside and asked who butchered his tomato plants. It was so funny because we didn't butcher anything. We removed all lower leaves and each plant now has clusters of beautiful tomatoes. He is worse than me, at least I try to learn something new and helpful and do it. Have a Wonderful & Blessed Day!

I have always had a similar fear of snakes, but lately have been reading about how they are shy, non-aggressive creatures, often injured and killed by people with an unreasonable fear of them. It really helps to see them as deserving sympathy. I try to have pity on them, and think of them as a creature that is just trying to make a living, same as me. If I see them in my garden, I leave until they are gone. So far we seem to be doing ok with this attitude. I urge you to read about them and try to desensitize yourself as much as possible. I still cant touch one, or even look for more than a few seconds, and my heart pounds with each encounter, but it's getting better.

I am really no lover of snakes but I do respect them and know they are great for mice and rat control. I have tried to learn as much about them as I can so that we can come close to living in harmony with each other. (I hate mice and rats with a passion so you see, snakes are more of a friend to me than an enemy) Also, did you know snakes are deaf? they "hear" you coming by vibration so all you have to do is stomp your feet or pound the ground and they will gladly slither away.

I would have ran miles to get away from those snakes. You are brave just as she is. You handled yourself well. I would have left the garden up to my husband.

Bri I am not laughing at you but screaming with you. I got bit by a rattlesnake on my foot walking out our backdoor. One fang got me the other hit the buckle in my sandle. My blood pressure went over 200 and the front part of my tounge went numb. Ambulance took me to emergency. They put a line on my leg with ink and if the swelling went past that I would have to have antivenom. Thank God it didn't! I couldn't put weight on my heel for over 6 months. It was frightening. So don't apologize I understand. We live in Tucson AZ. Lots of snakes here. Love your garden it is beautiful!! So happy your happy. Carol from Tucson
