  • Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of a feisty, playful species - the Yoyo Loach!
    Endemic to the Indus River basin, the Yoyo Loach (Botia almorhae) is hardy and undemanding, and best kept in aquariums with an abundance of structure. Tankmates should be selected carefully: although the species is not aggressive, it can easily intimidate small, timid fish with its large adult size and active, boisterous behaviors. The Yoyo Loach is capable of producing loud clicking noises, which can be heard outside of the aquarium, and specimens sometimes sleep in strange, unusual positions - for example, wedged into décor pieces or even on their sides on the substrate!

    I have a yo-yo loach in my tank with Zebra Danios and Guppies. On the very first day he seemed to nibble at them but after that he is very peaceful and doesn’t bother them at all.

    Great video! Very informative! I've been looking at buying some of these and watching the dozen or so little ones at my local pet shop for a few months.
    Being extra cautious I guess since I've not added any fish to my aquariums for well over a year now and really really don't want to go buying any sort of fish disease with the fish I eventually add to my populations!
    As much as I do love the look and the idea of having a group of these beautiful fish I am glad I got to see your video mentioning the fact that they are known to jump! Since I have plants growing above the water line as well as below it would be unfair of me to try to house them in my tanks without lids.
    Thanks for all the information!

    I got 1 to help with a snail problem. He is in with long fin plecos and a fighter fish also a large colony of shrimp. He is very peaceful has had a feast on snails and yes I am sure a few shrimp but not enough to slow the colony down as he has to chase them while the snails are to slow.

    I was sold a yo yo loach at my lfs and I'd never owned any loach before. After doing some research it turns out to be a golden zebra loach. I like him just the same. In fact he's my favorite fish in my 55g denison barb tank

      Purchased 4 zebra loaches for $3 a piece at big box pet shop- they were yolo loaches. Which cost twice as much. Sadly, they were tiny and I think my Raphael catfish ate them because I never saw them again. I’m almost tempted to take my 40 gal breeder apart to look for them. I heard they can hide in substrate with minimal water up to a year! I thought they were social fishes and wouldn’t have hidden. I never found a dead one .. so where did they go? 😢

    Bought 7 of them once had them shipped in the winter, it was a big deal and expensive. They went full mentally handicapped immediately tearing up the entire scape, attacking and eating all other fish, including each other. I highly recommend not bothering, they are not as cool as you would hope. I had them in a 65 ga with tiger barbs, a pleco.

    I have a group of six Yoyo Loaches in my 75 gallon planted tank and they are get along great with my community fish. It is heavily planted so they have plenty of crevices to explore. They are some of my most interesting fish. I’d love to add some Kuhli’s as well. Wondering if a two groups of six each would be too much for my 75 gallon tank. What is the opinion on that?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  Рік тому +2

      Hi Richard, great question! In our opinion, Yoyo Loaches would be too boisterous for Kuhli Loaches. Try to stick with calm, peaceful fish as tankmates for Kuhli Loaches - we have ours with wild Bettas, for example!

    I have 6 albino Cory catfish, 5 leopard & 3 zebra Danios, 3 molly's & nerite snails
    none of these did you mention for tank mates other than the Danios, & they get
    6-7 inches full grown & to keep 6-7 in a 75 gal aquarium that won't work in mine.
    You also talked about plant's, I have java fern, jungle Val, amazon swords & some
    octopus plant's, bacopa plant's, tiger lotus plant's & Taiwan lilies, & I also have
    pea gravel & river rock mix for substrate, so far I'm looking at a no go for these.

    I have 2 in a 55, 1 in a 29, and 1 in a 20. The 2 in the 55 are the most animated fish in that tank, one always being chased by the other alpha. However, the one in the 29 prefers to nest in the corner between the tank and heater suction cups. The juvenile in the 20-gallon is just perfectly content keeping all those pest snails in check alongside my lone Poecilia Velifera female molly. I prefer botias to corydoras due to their hardier barbels.

    I bought 3 to wive out the bladder snail issues in my 29-gallon planted tank, which took them less than a week. They will need to be moved as they get bigger because their tankmates are cherry barbs, white clouds, albino corys and aquatic frogs. I saw a loach try running over a frog and the frog try and ride the loach. Hoping it was all in fun. I have a 55-gallon with seven goldfish from 4-6 inches that will go to a new 75-gallon I hope to have up by fall. Would loaches match okay with goldies? I want to make the 55 a betta sorority, but don't think loaches would get along well. If neither work with loaches, I'm considering rainbow or paradise fish. Haven't considered water parameters yet.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  2 місяці тому

      Hi there! Loaches aren't compatible with goldfish as they need much warmer water. Good tankmates for loaches include other loaches, larger barbs and rasboras, gouramis, many tetras, etc.!

    WARNING:
    Yoyo Loach have little sharp barbs around their "whiskers". They extract these barbs when they are stressed. A natural defense against anything trying to swallow them. When you net them they can get these barbs stuck in the net. Be very careful not to pull these barbs out. I had one get his barb stuck in my net when i first got him. Very scary & stressful trying to free him. Luckily, he's still fine to this day. Hope this helps. Happy fish keeping!

    I have my yo-Yo loches and quarantine. Can I use one packet of maracyn and one teaspoon of ick-X in a 10 gallon tank prophylactically so that I don't introduce anything to my community tank?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  17 годин тому

      Hi there! ICH-X contains formaldehyde, which would be harsh for the loaches at full dose. We recommend a half dose given that both malachite green and formadehyde can be toxic at full dose rates for loaches and some catfish.

      My 2.5" Yo-Yo jumped out when I was cleaning the tank. He first bit and hung on to the cloth splash mat, then when I picked him up, he bit and held on to my finger! They can bite? Either that, or have strong mouths, but sure felt like a bite. Surprised me.
