Walktime Blog #22: Making A Glass Whiteboard

- Every lab needs a whiteboard, so when I saw a nice piece of glass being thrown out when helping a friend with a clean-up I grabbed it to mount on the wall. But glass is heavy, and it's not particularly easy to drill holes in. With a bit of care though it can be done, and the result turned out really well.

I love it just for the "time to go to OfficeWorks!" moment. Great work Jon.
I always wanted a glass white board. not brave enough to diy one yet, thanks for sharing
If you use strapping behind the glass, then you could screw it into multiple studs, then fasten the glass to the strapping. This would give you the best support instead of drywall screws.
+1 - "it compiles" 😂
Yes, good idea
Can you show a picture of how you spaced it out from the wall ? what tubes and screws did you use on that? did it sag at all?
Great job! I have a few questions - more observations. Have you thought about rubber washers (they come in white) to guard the glass from the direct metal contact? Also, I was sitting here at my desk observing my whiteboard, and I noticed that the surface isn't "as smooth as glass," so I thought that you might want to take a clear spray paint/coating and spray the business end of the whiteboard; it might give some needed resistance to the marker and show up more brilliantly - Thoughts?
Hi
It looks awesome.
Was the glass tempered?
Metal Wall Anchors Would be the best!
MyWillyboi AvE!!!!!
What's the type of paint you used here @SuperHouseTV ?
it compiles!
Lol @ hello world on the white board.
Ever consider whiteboard paint directly on the wall instead?
There are no highly rated whiteboard paints currently on the market.
What kind of white paint is it? Gloss or Emulsion?
Paint part was bad, I could had attached a white chart sheet to back for cleaner white.
I think so. I'm pretty sure most glass used in table tops is tempered, but I'm not a glass expert and I don't even know the source of the glass in the first place.
if its 1/2" it is usually not tempered. If it is 1/4" or 3/8" it is usually tempered.
i was thinking of edge lighting tempered glass with LED strips. will it be effective?
Richard Kang if you use neon markers with the lights, then yes
Can you attach white paper behind glass instead of painting it?
can i just use my window as whiteboard?
That's what I'm planning to do
cant you just buy one of those empty picture frames with a glass pane on it? Then hanging it would be just hammer and nails and you can even swap out the background easily. (like a weekly schedule in bg or whatever)
