all gear used is in the description, hopefully this was helpful and brought you through some interesting techniques and the theory behind them. thank you for watching. the songs in the video are: the wonder years - woke up older, neck deep - cant kick up the roots, knuckle puck - swing, the story so far - framework
I find what really helped me was playing the scales over a backing track in the same key, that was what changed it from playing a scale on sequence to being able to improvise.
Thanks for making this man, I clicked on this and knew that you would be one of the best to listen to because of the sheer amount of music content you pump out. Your covers are a godsend man, thanks for the videos👍
SelinaNotSelena while Paramore is a decent band, the singer in most songs is literally just talking about boys and boyfriends and it makes me want to die
I normally look for pop punk news / release blogs and check back once a week, scroll through and see what's new. Spotify does me well with the discover feature and Mondays weekly playlist. Also check out reddit.com/r/poppunkers, hope this helps.
See what I do is I’ll search up a song on tunebat to find the song key and I’ll just play along those scales in order to find the notes it’s a lot easier then tabs. Tabs may be easy to find the notes but it’s a lot funner if you do scales and learn by ear and is also 2 birds with one stone. I’m also a singer to so I use my guitar too figure out vocal notes
Great video! And awesome personality! I usually dread listening to someone explain guitar stuff, but you had food energy and a chill vibe. I had fun checking out your video. Please make more how to's! I am now subbed 🤘 (Also, cool thing including your Gamertag. It would be pretty chill if you played rainbow six siege)
What tuning are you using I'm trying to follow but your guitar sound totally different to mine I'm in Drop D DADGBE. Edit: your actually in D standard not Drop D so to follow you'd have to tune to C# G# C# F# A# D#
I was wondering the same, I heard it announced as “drop-D” but it sounded off when I tried to follow along. It sounds to me more like drop-D tuned down a half step?
The 4 octaves is the exact same melody pitched an octave higher basically. The same empty space that’s left from the rythym guitar will still be there, lead guitar should make fill the mix more but not only that, add to and harmonize the rythym melody. Use more notes than the rythym guitar on the off beats
It’s a no-brainer. I’ve been playing guitar for 15yrs and I’ve always been playing the same genre. When I hear “pop-punk” I think... NOFX, MxPx, Blink-182, Green Day, Allister, Rise Against and many more. You know you begin to date yourself when all the bands who people now claim as “pop-punk” are not what you know of as such... I’m 32yrs old now. All these new bands don’t have that sound
This seriously needs to be a series it’s so good

What tunning did you use in the video
do you have tabs for these parts? also great video!
Are you currently in a band?
Learning scales is a must in playing the guitar I just learned scales a couple months ago and trust me it’s so much easier
I find what really helped me was playing the scales over a backing track in the same key, that was what changed it from playing a scale on sequence to being able to improvise.
Matthew P if you need too find a song key use tunebat. It’s an amazing website
what scales? and what do they do
Not really
You do not know how long I have been waiting for a video like this.
Time to break out the strat
Time to break out the Tom delonge strat

my favorite pop punk leads are the hammer-on pull-offy ones in songs like the intro of staircase wit and the secondary intro riff in empty space.
with lots of open strings. i suppose this is more popular in twinkly-midwest emo bands but it fits into pop punk well too.
Blake these are great videos. Keep up the work!!
Thanks, Blake! I've been looking for something like this for a while, really helps me understand what they're doing. Giving it a go now.
As a Rhode Islander, I appreciate the Providence College books and stuff you rep. Keep rockin bud!
go friars
Thank you so much for this video, lots of useful information! Will definitely check out the rest of your channel.
Thanks man, very useful and informative
This was really helpful!
More stuff like this! Very helpful!
The 4th and 5th ways are using a lower note over a higher string and clusters utilizing diads and triads. -=80)
What song is at 0:00?
Dude your guitar tone is absolutely epic! How do you get about it?
AWESOME AS USUAL! Can you do any of Good Charlotte, any of the first 3 albums?
More videos like this if possible! Maybe some acoustic rhythms and leads? (unless you already have those videos?) 👍 🤘
Is there tabs for the song you demonstrated in this video?
most helpful video I've seen, great job and thank you
awesome tutorial, that lead octave riff was absolute killer 🤘
Cant Kick Up the Roots is one of the best Neck Deep songs! Love that its in the background
Can you make a video on how to write a rhythm part to match a lead?
This is a great video, would love to see a rhythm approached one
Great video. Thank you! Did you go to law school? I used to work at a college bookstore and recognize those books below your sign.
He looks like the film director character from Mulholland Drive.

SelinaNotSelena while Paramore is a decent band, the singer in most songs is literally just talking about boys and boyfriends and it makes me want to die

Kali Dreamer Swing by Knuckle Puck! Incredible song and one of my favorite guitar intros out there!
Great video
How do you find new music to listien to? And how could I get my own band's music to your ears?

@@MatthewPusey44 Thanks mate!
@@peik5569 No problem buddy, rock on
look through bandcamp.com. follow youtube recommendation rabbit holes. The best finds are the small bands no one really knows.

Can you share the guitar tabs?
what play style would blink be considered out of the 3 u mentioned
When recording the rhythm and lead guitars together, do you eq them the same?
yeah in this video they’re just identical for the sake of time and efficiency. if i was doing it for real they’d be completely independent
0:00 Name Of Song?
Woke Up Older by The Wonder Years

"You're actually in D standard"
"To follow you'd have to tune to (proceeds to list drop C# tuning)"
What kind of drugs are you on dude
„...Is using the Major Scale“

i shazam’d it, it’s woke up older by the wonder years
I'm a little confused, I won't lie.
So what are you doing with the octave leads specifically, when compared to just playing the basic 4 octaves?
The 4 octaves is the exact same melody pitched an octave higher basically. The same empty space that’s left from the rythym guitar will still be there, lead guitar should make fill the mix more but not only that, add to and harmonize the rythym melody. nice
You a law student? I’m pretty sure we have the same Property book lol

@BlakeMcConnell how did you eq the guitars

Great video, but... the background music is just too loud, it's making it hard to really understand everything you're saying.
You in law school or something? Can’t help but notice the law books.
I'm a bit tired of metal , time for some pop punk!
