Another issue is that the other cars mentioned in the review are way more expensive so I don't see how they're real competitors. Regular working class people don't have unlimited funds!
I’m having this issue , looking at getting a replacement for the model 3 and I’ve got used to the creature comforts that it comes with as standard. I’ve been out and about pricing and testing most cars in its”range” and you have to spend thousands in options and packs which take them way out of the Tesla price range….
I have found the indicator buttons to be a non-issue for me. Actually I find them quite convenient after getting used to them. As I am usually keeping my hands in the quarter-to-three position even in roundabouts, I always know where the button is. I haven't driven the i4, but I have noticed that there is less wind noise and noise from passing cars in the M3 compared to a BMW G30, mostly due to the double glazed windows. In the BMW I always had the feeling that the windows weren't closed all the way. Also, you must acknowledge that the M3 is way cheaper than any of the German competitors. The starting price of the i4 is 10k more than the M3, adjusted for equipment level the difference becomes even larger. The largest drawbacks for me are the unreliable automatic wipers, high beam assist and the lack of USS. Also while the suspension is very comfortable, at higher speeds (>160 km/h) on the German autobahn the car becomes a bit unstable and requires some effort to keep it in the lane.
We had an ionoq5 it was damaged and total loss. We decide to replace it with model y. Tesla is miles ahead of any EV . We love it ,it’s more practical, quicker ,drives better is planted on the road not like Ioniq5 it drove like a boot rocking form side to side . Our next car will be Tesla again not even thinking about any other brands and the range anxiety the people driving them have. We do charge at home but visiting relatives we had to stop to charge Ioniq5 it was a nightmare! Thank god is over now .
Test drove it on Monday. I have a late 2019 Model 3, and the facelift Highland is far better insulated. Being a musician and audiophile I would have loved to have that, but now that Tesla has dropped ultrasonic sensors (which are so practical, Tesla Vision is just not good enough at this point at least) and the indicator stalk (which is a must in a country with tons of roundabouts)…I just can’t see myself buying this. Otherwise, it’s a great car for sure.
The highland is better built and has better interior than both the ioniq6 and the seal. Also, better suspension. Every single other reviewer is saying that.

Have you tried the i4 or the alternatives? Indeed the BMW isn't built on a dedicated EV platform and yet, it's a spectacular EV. However, as mentioned in the video, Tesla does have the upper hand with its charging infrastructure, although, most will want to charge at home. Plus, when I went to pick up the Model 3 at Tesla there was a Skoda, Hyundai, Kia and Polestar all charging at Superchargers, while a line of Model 3s were queuing. Little ironic, don't you think?

Great review as usual. How substantial is the upgrade to the Model S from this? I hear people saying new 3 > old 3, but not many people comparing to S. I’m not able to get any tax benefits for either, so I’m comparing the Model S (75k) vs Model 3 AWD (50k). Leaning toward base spec Model S sometime in 2024, and I live in the US for reference.
Thank you! The Model S is an upgrade in many ways: better use of tech within the cabin (incl instrument cluster), far more comfortable to drive (better suspension system, but still not up there with the best), ridiculously fast (although base model will be slower than the tested Plaid), and nicer interior quality. As you're in the US, you also don't have to worry about being LHD vs RHD. So, if you can afford it, the Model S would be the way to go, but do consider some of the alternatives too - ie. BMW i4, Audi e-tron GT and Polestar 2.
Appreciate the detailed answer, good to know the S still has advantages over new 3 because I'm reading a lot that implies the new 3 is even better than the S haha. I could go for the plaid, but I'm mainly purchasing for the: comfort, sound quality, noise levels, and especially tech as I'm in the tech sector and a tech enthusiast. The efficiency / charging network also seems to be best with Tesla / Model S. I appreciate the alternatives though, I'll be watching all EV reviews until I finally pull the trigger (currently waiting until the rumored minor update with ambient lighting, or the model 3 launch in US, just to see what happens). Hi. Looking forward to picking up my new Model 3 around the end of the month so pleased to see your balanced review. I share your concern about the indicator stalk. I once had a car with its horn on the spokes of the steering wheel. A parked car pulled out forcing me to swerve into oncoming traffic. I was turning the wheel with one hand and chasing the horn with the other - never did find it. Hopefully not as critical with the indicators but still a bad idea
The highland is much more silent than BMW I4. I have tested this. Much more wondnoise from the BMWs frontdoor windows. I thought the window was not properly closed first when I tested first time. Second time I tested the BMW in another dealer I had the same windnoise again. And some annyoing rumbling noise from the frontwheels in both tested cars.
Never experienced such a thing in the i4 (driven and tested the eDrive40 and M50), while one of my friends owns the M50. There's a bit of whistling noise in the Highland, but it's minimal. Both are excellent in cabin noise.
I have a ‘revised’ M3 on order which I’m picking up on Feb 1st. I currently drive a BMW 330e and was very interested in the i4, which without doubt is impressive. However, compromised in many ways as it is an adapted ICE platform. It is also very expensive. I enjoyed this review but found it very negative.
Sorry you didn't find it biased and overly positive like many of the other reviews out there. It's, like all our videos, objective and of course, part subjective with the benchmark of 100+ EVs that have been reviewed on the channel. Note, the only things that have really been compromised with the i4 vs a pure EV are: frunk and transmission tunnel.
Nice balanced review thanks. In case relevant, you can get aftermarket screen tilt relatively cheaply from the likes of RSEV. Looks like an amazing car for the orice when looking at the entry level spec, sub £40k is still expensive, but it's very good value compared to everything else in its class, and when you factor in the class leading software, charging, efficiency and features I think it would dominate sales if only they hadnt made such a stupid decision in respect of the indicator stalk (and I also think the oarking and rain sensor situation isnt good enough). Ill hold final judgment until I've driven it, but the turn signal is a worry
Again you say 9 speakers in RWD model. What gives? I just watched a Gjeebs video and he shows No Sub-woofer (2 blanks in trunk) on new model 3 test drive vehicle in Arizona. Perhaps an early unit for test drives? I'm counting on the 9 speakers including Sub (as you relate) on my 2024 model 3 RWD currently on order. Mine is coming from Shanghai I'm told so hopefully...
As the info shared here is directly from Tesla, not some UA-camr lol. Not sure if there are different variants around, but as far as I'm aware the new models all have the same 9 speaker setup. And yes, maybe a pre-production model was driven.
Yes, and funnily enough in this instance, Tesla was wrong. They shared incorrect information to press and to its customers. It's false marketing. Hasn't really happened before in the past, so next time will think twice!
Thanks. I agree about the indicator stalks. A safety issue. This will stop me replacing my Model Y for a newer one if they stick to this cost-saving choice.
@@TotallyEVIf there's enough backlash that it hurts sales, they'll definitely bring it back. Like with Model S they brought back the round steering wheel.
@wemakecookie was the Model S decision really because of the backlash? I mean considering it's sold as an LHD in the UK for example, it doesn't seem they really care lol. On that note, changing a steering wheel isn't hard, especially if they can just take it from the Model 3, but adding back stalks would change the entire manufacturing process, which as per the above, will not be something I can see that they'll do. You either buy it or go elsewhere - I think that's Tesla's philosophy.
@@TotallyEV I think if it hurts sales enough they'll revert back, even if it's more difficult than changing the steering wheel back to round. It all depends if it's enough to hurt a significant amount of sales.

Am I missing something? In the old model 3 you can have music and still use the dashcam by formating and adding 2 separate folders. This is in the manual. Has the Highland removed this feature?
Hello. As I'm thinking about purchasing the new M3, I don't know if you can help me clarify the following: knowing that the LR's batteries are slower to charge above 80% (which I know is not advisable for everyday life), I wonder if the LFP batteries (which equip the SR) are also the same (since it is advisable to charge them to 100% on a daily basis). Thanks
@@TotallyEV In Model 3 Owner's Manual (Charge Settings) the following was written: “For vehicles with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) high voltage Batteries, Tesla recommends you keep your charge limit to 100%, even for daily use, and that you also fully charge your vehicle to 100% at least once per week”.
Despite a better design, best battery and ui - plus charger network - still feels £3-5k too expensive. Plus the 9% interest in the uk is unfortunate (hopefully this will improve this year).
Don't think that's true, but haven't tested the new RWD model. Can say that the old RWD model was identical to the old AWD model, so it's unlikely that's changed.
Absolutely brilliant review. The script, cinematography, pacing and timeline of your videos are superb and you deserve much much more subscribers. It’s genuinely a joy to see a review by this channel. Thankyou for your work! Out of curiosity, which car would you personally pick - this face-lifted Tesla highland with some money to spare or a bmw I4 edrive35 sport?
Thank you for the kind comment, really appreciate it! Would really depend as to what you're looking for. Presume you're comparing the entry-level Tesla H and the i4 eDrive35? If so, range, performance, rear occupancy space, audio system, and the standard driver assistance systems would be the Tesla, everything else would be the BMW. If I had to pick one EV right now in this class, it would be the i4 eDrive40 (not 35), the BYD Seal AWD or the older AWD LR Model 3.
@@TotallyEV I don’t think it will take away the unique selling point of the Plaid S There’s a lot of room between the current Model 3 performance and the S Plaid with the comparative 0-60 (with rollout) of 3.1 seconds versus 1.99 My prediction - it’ll be driven by dual carbon wrapped motors delivering around 700hp and 0-60 of around 2.6 or 2.7 seconds That still would mean the S Plaid would destroy the 3 at the track (or certainly the drag strip anyway). But at the same time it would make the 3 performance (likely labeled “ludicrous”) a monster vs most other similar class vehicles. And there’s still the matter of the Model S having other selling points - larger more spacious vehicle, air suspension etc. This is analogous to other manufacturers model delineation - for example BMW’s 3/4 series have significant overlap with their 5 series and the 3 & 5 M series are close in performance but the 5 series has (slightly) better performance.
@philparker1278 but unlike other manufacturers who have far larger manufacturing capabilities plus customisation, Tesla is trying to simplify its approach. Thus, taking out a car from its production line (especially if it's not been the most popular) is a logical step. If anything, they could offer the acceleration boost again. But let's see, who knows what will happen!
This review is too late now. Hundreds of thousands of Europeans have already purchased it. You should have brought out this critical review a few months earlier by driving it in another European country!!
The thing is, I suspect that it almost never got used and so why make the 99% of people who don't use it pay extra. If it is cold and you have to carry three in the back, then it's going to be cosy enough with the body heat to mean that it's not a problem (I expect).

Where have you seen it advised to charge to 100%? Usually with EVs, it's recommended to go till 80%.
@@TotallyEV In Model 3 Owner's Manual (Charge Settings) the following was written:
“For vehicles with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) high voltage Batteries, Tesla recommends you keep your charge limit to 100%, even for daily use, and that you also fully charge your vehicle to 100% at least once per week”.
@joaotorreira7418 that's interesting, first I've heard of it. Can't advise but thanks for mentioning it, will look into it.
Despite a better design, best battery and ui - plus charger network - still feels £3-5k too expensive. Plus the 9% interest in the uk is unfortunate (hopefully this will improve this year).
Thanks for sharing!
@@TotallyEV Do you think the interest rate for PCP will come down this year?
@Clarkpiggott16 honestly not sure, sorry!
I read somewhere that if you get RWD/SR u don’t get one pedal drive is this true???
Don't think that's true, but haven't tested the new RWD model. Can say that the old RWD model was identical to the old AWD model, so it's unlikely that's changed.
Nope, you still get one pedal driving
There is a low regen setting…
Where?
I see, all expected but audio system. Would you put the tesla's audio system above the I4's Harmon Kardon? you've stated both are great@@TotallyEV
@zaidrashid3124 not the stock Tesla one, but the premium system is better than the HK system found in the BMW.
Still waiting for the new Model 3 Plaid to replace my M3 Performance. This car needs more power. Around 700-800hp and 10s 1/4 mile would be sweet.
Can't see that happening.
@TotallyEV think you’re going to be wrong on that.
That would take away the USP of the Model S, but sure let's see.
@@TotallyEV I don’t think it will take away the unique selling point of the Plaid S
There’s a lot of room between the current Model 3 performance and the S Plaid with the comparative 0-60 (with rollout) of 3.1 seconds versus 1.99
My prediction - it’ll be driven by dual carbon wrapped motors delivering around 700hp and 0-60 of around 2.6 or 2.7 seconds
That still would mean the S Plaid would destroy the 3 at the track (or certainly the drag strip anyway).
It's never too late.
It is insane you think everyone can just go to Europe for a video. He is in the UK, on the UK press team. Basically, shut up. Please.
At least someone understands, thank you! Also, not everyone got an invite.
@TotallyEV you're a star!
Haha, far from it, but thanks for the comment!
No seat heating on the central back seat? The old one had this 😢
Nope, as mentioned, it's been removed!
The thing is, I suspect that it almost never got used and so why make the 99% of people who don't use it pay extra.
If it is cold and you have to carry three in the back, then it's going to be cosy enough with the body heat to mean that it's not a problem (I expect).
@@patmanrick we are often 5 in the car, so that feature is used a lot.
@@filiped7298 fair enough, I am one of three and never had any issues with being cold in the middle seat as a kid in cars without heated seats 🤷🏽♂️
@@patmanrick of course we can live without it 😉. It is just a nice to have. It is a shame to see features removed.
nice review.
I still don't understand why their exterior colors cost so much, specially with such paint finish quality.
Thank you, and indeed not sure why either!
Thanks Chris great review! Simple word for me is ergonomics! This car doesn’t have it!! I’m happy with my bmw i4 thank you very much 😊✅👍
Pleasure, glad you enjoyed the review and that you're liking the i4!
I really like the new look, but I bought an Ioniq 6.
It’s brilliant.
Thanks for sharing, and indeed the Ioniq 6 is fabulous.
