Only issue with food scraps is most of the food is GMO tainted. Paul Gautschi from Back to Eden feeds his birds everything out of his garden year around. Legit. Pigs....that's a different story for feed...you have alot of good, resourceful ideas regardless.
Local supermarket usually let you go thru their garbage. It is called dumpster diving, and you will find so much good food that everything is in their package's boxes. I have pick up bananas lemon apple all kinds of still good food. It is very sad to see how much food they waste. Feeding the chicken and pig only carb bread is not a good idea if you will be eating those animals. A lot of supermarkets throw away produces veggies that are still good to eat for human or animals.
Had to run into Wilson for a few things, on the way back saw 12 bags of leaves bagged and ready. The lady said come back later in the week she'll have more bags ready. Love your content, we relocated from Maryland onto an acre. Our first task are chickens in a chicken tractor, next will be vegetables, herbs and fruit trees.
Hey billy5, Just found you through the firmametal podcast. I'm a homesteaders as well amd we also get all the produce from.the local grocery store for the pigs. Helps the feed bill.
I’ve been doing this for a few years. I have two groceries I get produce from. Used to be a third store until the produce manager got a better job elsewhere. New manager is just like the big change stores and throws it all away.
ALDIs is where it’s at! Fed my pigs all week this week and I found a whole case of hard apple cider 👍🏻😬. I hit them up every time I’m In The area (under the radar) but I have a few who hold it for me as well. No cameras. Not saying to do this but it works for me.
A number of counties in Alberta, Canada run Loop Resource Programs that return waste food products back to farmers to feed animals. Lots of information available on the internet to see how these programs are working.
Awesome. I was at a garden stand. Bananas were a day over ripe. Fruit flies were happy but customers were annoyed so they put up a free bananas sign. Peals went into my compost. Flash froze cut up bananas for smoothies.
Years ago back in the 60's and 70's my uncle did this EXACT thing with the Dolly Madison bread store. They gave him ALL of EVERYTHING that was date expired. Thank you for the memory of those times.
Love your idea Billy, but if you feed your animals GMO scraps (as I'm sure most food scraps are) doesn't that mean your meat and eggs are GMO? If so, is it worth it in the long run?
Thanks again for sharing this info Billy, I’m actually looking into a few places now to hopefully start getting some of their food scraps & bread 👍🏻👍🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
When you told me about this system over a year ago I did it and was amazed with it. The pig you processed at our festival was raised on 90% food scraps like you showed me.
Others have mentioned Aldi, but what some do not know, is that Aldi takes food off the shelves the day before expiration and donates it to local charities. Plus, it is not too hard to setup getting scraps from them. They want what would otherwise be wasted to be of us. They do NOT want a ton of publicity about it. It is more of a helpful thing in the background, rather than something the talk about.
In a little town in New Mexico I worked in a restaurant that a man would come once a week and pick up all our waste from food scrapes to feed their pigs. That was back in the early 1970s.
In Oklahoma if you get scraps to feed animals you have to process it by cooking it to a certain temperature for so long of time and also be inspected by the agriculture department at any time or you can be fined jailed lose your stock or property so be careful what you say
Seeing so much cr*p news coming out of the US, watching vids like yours is like a breath of fresh air. People here in The Gambia are masters at waste-not want-not and it's great that there seems to be more of a movement over there (albeit nowhere enough). Keep on!
Avoid Asheville every chance I get. Left there 25 years ago and ain't looked back. lol Your right brother, you gotta go looking. I just scored recently on about 50lbs of coffee grounds a week. Awesome coop bedding that turns into soldier fly food after that and turns into chicken super food. Cha-ching
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 I get it, but maybe you should start selling free-range pork. Many people, yours truly included, would die to purchase it from a trusted source!
Billy my local grocery store puts everything out on a rack in boxes and bags of bread every day so it's a hit and miss because there are others that collect scrap, but yes I pick up at least times a week
Thank U Perma Pasture Farm, I was turned down three times on Wednesday looking for food scraps. Billy you have given me inspiration to keep on going. 11:05 Can I compost bear claws and everything beagles for nitrogen? Or do I want veg. and / or animal poop as nitrogen? Luke from Michigan is using alfalfa meal, but that costs$. Peace out & God bless.
Love your Philosophy-Moral over legal. used to do similar with used veggie oil for fuel, and similar for my chickens. Can't do anything for my meat wabbits yet, though I do feed them Kudzu and yard clippings on the side
This is fantastic, and I want to try it using these great tips .. but, for layers, do you consider the nutritional needs? Im just wondering how it might affect my egg production rate. I suppose I can give random stuff Im able to scavenge like this plus offer free choice calcium source, but idk about all the other important nutrients. Either way, Im going to give it a shot, bc the bag feed isnt cheap, and despite them supposedly mixing specifically for laying chickens, we all are aware of the recent issues with bad feed reducing egg laying. Thanks.
We save our scraps from the restaurant.. scrap the plates and backend stuff. Chicken lay all year long even when their coop gets snowed in

I'm at a lost with compost. when it comes to knowing if it is ready, or healthy. Is there anyway to to test without a microscope??
Thank you

I don't think so, homie don't play dat 😂😂😂 try Chez Whitey, the man might let you get some scraps off his table.
Thank you for this!!!
This is a great guide!!!
Laws are just another form of control. 'Do no harm to others without their consent' is my only law.
Wallie world has clout. They sell seeds for birds.

Jimmy crack corn😂😂 you always make me laugh.
Be sure to tip your waiter!

I have one a few towns over how do you do it
That is awesome! I wish I would’ve remembered to mention ALDI! They don’t lock their dumpsters!

Municipalities allowing people to dump their food scraps at a location at the dump. Once it's decomposed it is picked up for home gardens.
You listen to Mike from around the world?
I used to listen to him every time I listened to Pastor Paul.
I used to hit all the pizza places, especially the ones with salad bar. You ain’t seen anything until you watch some hogs fight over raw dough. Lol😂😂😂
Great idea!
Great video.. now that trash can there. How long would that normally last you?? Thanks again
About a week on 30 chickens.

Awesomeness
Not sure why anyone would shop at TSC, especially after poisoning PRIDE feed!
Thanks for all the great info.
Thank you so much for watching in responding Patty!
super

I appreciate these tips, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
LEVITICUS chapter 11 says it all!
I'm Australian. I don't understand your reference to Chez Whitey. Elizabetj😢
Improvise, adapt and overcome! Thanks for your wisdom and mentorship. Blessings this season to you and your family.
I tried this in Canada, the stores refused to give the waste. So I picked through the dumpster to feed my animals
Love your idea Billy, but if you feed your animals GMO scraps (as I'm sure most food scraps are) doesn't that mean your meat and eggs are GMO? If so, is it worth it in the long run?
The stuff I use is all non GMO…but I suspect you’re correct.
I read just the other day that it is now legal to dumpster dive anywhere in the U.S.
I’m surprised they’re not legislating it to be the other way around.
Well it's to feed the homeless, I don't remember where I saw that article but it seemed legit
The stores in my town you'll get arrested for dumpster diving. Posted right on the dumpster.
❤❤❤
This is why I want pigs.
They are definitely a useful tool
Full Circle❤
Mom and pop grocery stores are gold mines!
Thanks. Passed it on to many of my friends who have either chickens or hogs or both. I have chickens
Good stuff!
Love how you think outside the box.
Thank you so much, my friend!

There are definitely lots of places out there.

That’s what I’m talking about!
My father worked at a baker and the farmers would come by at O dark thirty to get the old bread and pastries for hog feed.
That’s what I’m talking about!
Thank you Billy for sharing!!!
Thanks for listening!

I dont dumpter dive but I pick up byproducts also but remember if you plan on selling the pork legally you need to cook the waste before you feed it
Excellent content
Schools and Nursing Homes will also work with you....I sometimes provide buckets with lids to make it easy for me to pick up daily
That’s what I’m talking about!

Marvellous! Do you still have pigs on your homestead? If so, would love a pig video, as we haven’t had that in ages!
I have so much pork in the freezer that didn’t make sense for me to get anymore for right now. Maybe next year!
