Ya'll are not looking at the big picture, economically people are just not spending money. Disc golf isn't losing popularity, it's just that the average person can't afford discs that now cost 25 bucks a pop, tickets are now more expensive to go and watch. Putting food on the table is just more important at the moment.

Yeah I was buying discs like crazy in 2019-2021, it was hard to find a champion aviar, now they have amazing discs, anything you can dream of, and I can’t justify it economically. But hey I probably have like 200 ‘old school’ discs so I’m content. I’m sure the majority of mid-class disc golfers who have been playing since pre-Covid can relate.

The landscape of pro disc golf over the last 4 years has changed completely. Top 10 players were almost non existent four years ago. Buhr. Robinsons. Antilla. Klein. Redalen. Rathbun. It will be interesting to see what happens w the contracts for the old guys like Barsby. Gurthie. Freeman. Conrad. Keep up the good work Foundation! The only ones in disc golf getting stronger.

Here's what Prodigy should do: use that money they just freed up to hire Simon Lizotte's disc-throwing machine. Use that machine to perfect the disc golf basket. Update all the existing Prodigy baskets to that new design. Market the new design as "Isaac Robinson approved". Win over the hearts and minds of the disc golfing world.

I know everyone has different versions of ideal finishing holes but holes 17 & 18 at the Preserve are some of my favorites. It's refreshing to see a hole force you to shape a shot with touch after ripping super stable drivers on hyzer in the wind. Especially when followed by a final hole that presents an eagle opportunity, which creates larger swings down the stretch.

I think Uli’s point on time outs is that if anyone is willing to use them then they will call attention to their pace of play and will contextualize the time they take to throw/putt overall. So if someone calls a time out, their card mates will feel emboldened to call them on time violations later on in situations when no time out was called.

The huge problem with timeouts is the limit of only 2 PER ROUND. I can't imagine having to play a course like Northwood Black and only getting to spend more than 30s figuring out a scramble shot twice. Do we really want to watch Ricky or Calvin rush a tricky shot like that because they've already been off the fairway twice that round?

  • @kennykwong1028

People just aren't buying that much. Most of the ppl that collect discs or purchase large amount of discs are getting elsewhere. There's a cross over with tournaments too. Bunch of discs given out there. And a tour disc is now 30 bucks. No fucking way it should cost that much. And everything else is expensive.

Quick notes on Wisconsin courses. The silver cup used to be a silver series, never a pro tour stop. It was 2 courses at separate properties, silver Creek (on the lake with lighthouse hole) and Rolling Ridge, a mostly wooded track, and those properties will host Women's US next summer. Neither have been for sale, but Highbridge Hills was, that multi course property in northern Wisconsin hosted worlds many years ago. That property has been for sale multiple times, it's only weakness is location. Incredible property with terrain that would rival Vermont n Mass courses. Coverage of worlds featuring caddy Brad IS on UA-cam!

We should amend the 30 sec rule to only apply after a Marshall has come to the group and warned them for falling behind. The Marshall will then stay with the group until they show they are playing to the correct pace of play. That way if you feel like it’s an issue you can call for a Marshall to come over and time people. I do not want people rushing hard shots if the group is playing quick enough.

Keeping track of timeoutes etc is just unnecessary, even 30 secs is a bad way to do it imo. Courtesy violation for excessive time if things are obviously getting out of hand too often.
We are all trying to get through the round fast, but I've had times where we were making good time and we were fine taking it slower, heat and elevation for us 40 guys as an example.
The slow players stand out but don't happen often imo, could be my division but we have been making great time.

It is completely ridiculous that a sport that requires the level of finesse and not just physicality but also the mental side, applying science, just such an interesting sport that disc golf is, that you don't have to be an elite level athlete to still play at least a relatively competitive level, it's approachable from all ages from 4 to 100, yet our popularity is dwarfed by a sport where people are smacking wiffle balls with a cutting board... Every basket has a place where the chains push the disc back out. Even the exalted Innova baskets, at a certain height on the pole the chains will push the disc back out just enough that the disc will be vertical when it's over the rim and fall on the wrong side of the tray. The Prodigy baskets are really prone to this physics phenomenon but all baskets do it. I don't know if there's a chain assembly that can eliminate this completely without making the tray wider.

It's not just money, that died up after covid, it's also time. Disc golf takes time to play and people had more free time during covid, now that the regular world has returned and the economy got worse, time becomes a more precious commodity. It's like you have talked about before getting people to watch 3+ hrs of live coverage, there is that and expecting to go out and spend 2 or 3 hours throwing and field work, putting practice of you want to improve. It's all expensive in a different way.

If Prodigy Europe is indeed it's own entity, I could see these two trades happening at the same time by complete chance, but they also have a lot of similarities and both players moving to Innova does make me wonder if Väinö just managed to negotiate his leave better or has more pull (or leverage) within Prodigy Europe in order to spin his departure for a better look. I dunno...

Concerning baskets, I could be wrong but in the early days wasn't the target just the pole, and eventually they added baskets partly for convenience cause then you don't have to chase your disc after nicking the pole or bend down to the ground to pick it up. The obvious solution is a sensor that detects whether or not the disc touches the pole or would have touched the pole had the chains not kept it from doing so. Whether the basket catches it or not should not be a factor. What should matter is - was the putt accurate left to right and up to down. Nothing changes except adding sensors, technology was there decades ago

theyre going out of business or selling. you dont lay off two players then help them get new jobs unless youre going under. everyone keeps saying they left when we now know they were let go.

    Timeout rule is bad
    SOLUTION:
Instead of pulling timeouts from say basketball,
    We should be pulling FOULS.
If each player is allowed 5 time fouls, then calling a card mate on time foul will become a regular thing. A fee time fouls per round is no big deal. But If someone is a problem they will get stroked after being called 5 times. This will introduce time accountability throughout the round and only punish those who do not adjust to the required rate of play.
If they go over 60 seconds they get a double foul. But if they have to do that twice a round it’s just an extra minute so no big deal for pace of play.
    Pay me.

Often, Brodie is a voice of reason, but at other times he just comes off as a professional PDGA complainer. I see it in almost every other sport, people just love to complain about their governing body. It was obvious that the only reason Brodie thought the time-out rule was bad was because he thought it came from the PDGA. When Uli said it came from the players he didn't know what to say anymore. As most players clearly agree, the time-out rule would be great and add strategic decision-making to the sport.
Brodie often also argues that somehow monitoring the players' pace and telling them to speed up would make a difference. He's just not thought that through. Once a gap of a few holes has been established between groups there is rarely room for the slow group to pick up their speed of play in a way that would actually make up that lost time. If they actually did speed up their play to that extent it would likely ruin that entire card's round, which is obviously not something a tournament organizer wants to force a card to do. In practice, they'll likely just manage to keep up with the gap they originally lost. Even then it often affects the players of that card negatively. This is what has happened every time a card has been asked to speed up as far as I know. So maybe consider that stance again Brodie.

I could have sworn Brodie has previously pitched a similar idea. It may have been someone else though.
And yeah that’s my one criticism of Brodie. He leans so heavily into being negative now. Especially about the PDGA.
In this case it wasn’t even the PDGA’s idea.
And if you complain about him you’re ’too sensitive’.

He was astonished when he found out it supposedly came from the players because he straight up said that he never saw anything about it or had an opportunity to vote on it. He was flabbergasted.

Brodie is wrong on the timeouts, it will make it easier to call excessive time. Over your 30s and haven't announced a timeout? Call them for excessive time. Over your 60s timeout? Called. No more excuses. It'll be interesting to see how people will use them.
