      How to rocket jump:
      1. Think about where you want to go, and point your rocket launcher at a wall or floor so the explosion sends you in the direction you want to go
      2. Use a regular jump to get in the air and hold the crouch button before you hit the ground (if you are already airborne, you can skip this step)
      3. Before you hit the ground, fire the rocket, and the explosion will send you flying the opposite direction (aiming directly down blasts you up, aiming at a wall while you are in the air sends you away from the wall)

Just a bit of advice, getting good at rocket jumping can take hundreds if not thousands of hours. This isn’t like Overwatch where you can fly with a button, it’s an extremely complex mechanic. Don’t expect to get it right quickly. I have 5000 hours in the game and I know plenty of people who have fine tuned the art far more than I have.
Edit: That being said, I believe in you if you put in the time and patience to practice!

Pyro can airblast quite a lot of stuff (rockets, grenades, medic crossbows, etc) but not bullets, and airblasting uses up a significant amount of ammo, and it takes timing to reflect, and on top of that you need aim to reflect it back at the opponent. So to be a deadly airblaster pyro takes skill and practice

Quick explanation of the rocket boots:
Soldier has 2 pairs of boots. The first and more relevant ones are the gunboats, which drastically reduce the damage taken from rocket jumping. The second pair, the one he showed off, are called Mantreads. They allow you to take sharper turns and less knockback while rocketjumping. These are almost exclusively used on Trolldier and also have the niche use of being able to stomp on somebody’s head.

    • @Diz_Y
      @Diz_Y Рік тому +14

Technically, Soldier has rocket boots by default: It can be seen triggering every time when Soldier rocket jumps. This happens even when you wear a banner or the parachute.

6:48 They are celebrating because the Soldier killed the enemy Medic. As in previous videos, LazyPurple is covering competitive TF2, which is, despite how chaotic he's making it look in the videos, extremely tactical. Much more so than Overwatch. Killing the enemy Medic is often a great feat in a comp game, because it means the enemy loses all their progress towards an ÜberCharge. Much of the dynamics in comp TF2 is determined by which team is currently ahead in building their Über.
The reference to comp TF2 is also why he talked about the roaming Soldier earlier, as the guy who guards the flanks or jumps around the map. The other Soldier in the team would be the pocket Soldier, named after the term pocket heals, because he almost always stays around the main combo and protects the Medic.

    • @Junakase
      @Junakase 25 днів тому +1

@@mariustan9275 The nature of the game makes Overwatch less tactical. Unlimited ammunition, higher damage output, and ultimates are less valuable than an übercharge in TF2. You can't lose progress to an ultimate, either. Therefore, there's a lot more spamming going on and fights are a lot more chaotic. Many heroes are even designed to cause chaos in the game with their skills. It mostly comes down to TF2 being less forgiving of mistakes, which means you have to plan your actions better. Overwatch also hasn't copied the 5CP game mode yet, which requires the most team coordination.

    • @mariustan9275
      @mariustan9275 25 днів тому +1

@@Junakase Yeah, that is true. I've played both, and alongside unlimited ammunition, many reload all at once or have automatic weapons or both. In fact I'm pretty sure the only person to reload one at a time is Ashe. This means its much easier to spam because there's less downtime for doing so, and automatic weapons only require tracking, not aim. And yes, you are right. Ubercharge is entirely lost on death, while OW ult charge is kept on death. Also this is more of an OW 1.2 thing, but the meta right now revolves on tanks just switching to whatever counters the other tank or team, which just turns the game into glorified rock paper scissors to counter whatever rather than relying on skill. A lot of players hate it.

Quick Side Note: Pyro's Alt-fire (right click) is called the Airblast, and it functions similarly to Genji's Deflect.
However, Airblast can only reflect projectiles. To compensate, all reflected projectiles (rockets, bombs, Jarate bottles, etc.) are mini-crits (35% damage boost).

to quickly summarize the trolldier loadout and the purpose of each item in said loadout:
rocket jumper: it's a normal rocket launcher which deals absolutely 0 damage both to enemies and yourself making the safe rocket jumps it's main and only purpose.
mantreads (the boots): they give you more air strafing controll and reduced knockback but their main aspect is the ability to deal damage to enemies by jumping on their heads from great heights.
market gardener (the shovel): it deals normal damage but has reduced swing speed. however it deals critical damage during a rocket jump so if you do a rocket jump and then swing early enough to hit your enemy WHILE still airbone you deal 195 damage which is enough to one shot every class other than soldier and heavy.

    • @bobthebox2993
      @bobthebox2993 Рік тому +7

Actually, the main aspect of the mantreads is the air control and the reduced knockback, since those 2 stats help a lot with hitting your Market Gardeners. The goomba stomps are a nice bonus, but are not something you want to actively go for most of the time, because it compromises your ability to market garden people, which is stronger than stomping them.

Also as for rocket jumping, it's def not easy for beginners to learn so don't know why chat was giving you a hard time about it. There's a whole sub-community of TF2 dedicated for just rocket jumping, and there's tone of custom maps to train beginners. I also recommend watching the SFM animation "Zero to Hero." Kieran! As a TF2 player with 2K hours, Rocket Jumping is an artform. The feature is legitimately a glitch in the code for TF2/Source Engine that allows grenades, rockets, etc to send you flying with very specific conditions (crouch and jump at the exact same time) and it takes hours upon hours to train yourself. Because if you look left faster than you are moving left, or you press the W key ANY TIME you are airborne you drop like an overweight fly. You're donezo. It's a fun skill to learn, but a punishing one to master. Learn basics and pogo, there are jump academies for it.

Pyro can reflect not bullets (hitscan), but projectiles (rockets, pipe grenades, stickies, a literal jar of piss, anything that has travel time unless it's stated otherwise), it was implemented as an alt-fire after a while, when the devs found out that a low range class has a hard time against power classes (mainly soldier).
It can also push other players, so I can try to recreate my first (cheesy) play of the game in OW2 (I'm new to this) that I got after pushing the entire enemy team off a cliff with Lucio.

  • @BellesBideos

Pyro's airblast, as well as knocking back enemy players, allows him (her? them? it?) to redirect projectile weapons in a short cone directly in front of them. LazyPurple did a highlights video centered around it called "Return to Offender" which is still one of my favorite TF2 videos.
Airblast doesn't make Pyro a direct counter to Soldier, but it does mean that Soldier-Pyro is one of the more even matchups in the game. The airblast cooldown is almost the same as the fire-rate of the rocket launcher, so part of the Soldier counterplay can be delaying a shot to bait an airblast and catch the Pyro while he's vulnerable, or swapping to a secondary shotgun which can't be reflected. Pyro, on the other hand, usually wants to try to harry the Soldier with flames to bait the panic rocket, or try to use their faster Degreaser weapon swapping to get to their secondary shotgun before the Soldier has fully pulled out theirs.

Pyro's flamethrower, if you right click with it, will use a bunch of ammo and perform an "airblast", which reflects most projectiles in the game and switches their team to the pyro's own, but you have to have excellent timing to pull it off, because it only reflects the projectiles immediately in front of the pyro at the time the button is pressed - it isn't a case of "I pressed this button so I'm immune to all projectiles", it's more "there's a projectile about to hit me, but if I press this button while it's close enough to be reflected but not close enough to hit me, I can aim it wherever I'm looking, where it will deal extra damage". Very hard to learn reliably, because there's a lot of downtime between uses and it doesn't have a lingering hitbox, it is only active for a few frames, so you can't just spam it if you're facing a projectile class, you have to predict when they're going to fire and have the reaction times to actually pull it off.
And no, it doesn't work on bullets, only on projectiles like arrows, rockets, and demoman grenades, and even then, there are a couple it doesn't work on anyway. It also pushes enemy players back and extinguishes burning teammates.

Also let us not forget the Trolldier (Raining Men Scene) XD Im sure people already screamed at you how to rocket jump, for basics though, just Jump+crouch while shooting at your feet. You have to risk the small HP loss, but if you use it right, Soldier can fly around more quickly than even Scout can normally. Of course, there's also the Rocket Jumper, a special rocket launcher that doesn't do any damage to anybody - it's essentially laser-focused on the rocket-jumping aspect, making it more of a complement to certain other weapons of his (like the "Trolldier's" Market Gardener shovel, which guarantees crits if he's flying from a rocket jump).
    - Yup, the rocket that hit that Soldier also took out the Scout near him via splash damage.

Weapons/ items he used in video:
Gunboats: -60% damage from blast jumping with your own rockets
Mantreds: 200% increase in air control, deals to enemy 3X fall damage if you land on enemy players head, and almost complete reduction from knock back and airblast
Direct Hit: increased damage by 25%, 80% faster projectile, does minicrits (base damage X 1,5) to blast jumping enemies (soldiers, demomans and thermalthruster pyros)
Market garden: -25% swing speed (increases the interval between swings), but does critical hits (3X the damage) while you are blast jumping (it means that you can hit 195 damage swing, instakilling 7 out 9 classes, melee deals 65 damage)

    things to note:
soldier has the second highest overall mobility in the game, losing only to the demoman. scout has the highest base run speed
2:05 upon losing. the team that lost goes into loser state, where they lose all weapons and suffer a small movement debuff until the start of the next round. basically the winning team gets a few seconds where they get to hunt down the survivors of the losing team with absolute impunity before the start of the next round. it's pretty funny
2:28 you can totally go that far in the game, however there are certain criteria that need to be met in order to do so
5:20 that is an actual quote he said, yes
6:07 this is an alternate melee weapon for the soldier, it's called the Disciplinary Action and it grants the soldier and teammates a movement buff when he strikes them at the cost of it dealing less damage to enemies
6:45 every class in the game can blast jump. using enemy damage to push you away from danger is called "damage surfing" and is a very important survival technique in the game as damage from nearly anything also applies some amount of knockback
6:55 medics are the highest priority kill target in any round of tf2
7:10 this is what's known as a "loadout subclass" or "subclass" for short. this one specifically is known as the "Trolldier" the weapons of this subclass are as follows in ascending order; the Rocket Jumper is a rocket launcher that deals 0 damage and enables the soldier to rocket jump without dealing damage to himself. the Market Gardener is a melee weapon that deals critical hits to all enemies while the user is rocket jumping and the Manntreads are boots that improve the soldier's ability to move in the air while also reducing the amount of knockback he takes from enemy sources.
a critical hit from a Market Gardener deals 195 damage and is thus able to instantly kill 7 of the 9 classes assuming they are at full health
10:02 the entire measurement system of the US is imperial which is all in 12ths (which was invented by the british and the primary reason why the US didn't convert to metric is because largely of 18th century piracy)
12 inches in a foot (an inch being about 2.5 cm)
3 feet in a yard (a yard being ~ 4 cm shy of a meter)
    5280 feet or 1760 yards in a mile (a mile being ~ 1.6 km)
and yes 5280 divides by 12 perfectly. 1760 doesn't because it's already divided into thirds
there are other measurement denotions in distance like furlongs and chains but those aren't used commonly anymore
11:26 pyro has a mechanic called airblast where he can reflect projectiles away from himself. all projectiles reflected by the pyro have their movement accelerated and also deal mini crit damage which increases the base damage of the projectile by 35%
12:01 most sources of "bullet damage" in tf2 are hitscan and not classified as projectiles in tf2 and therefore are completely unaffected by pyro airblast.
12:49 the direct hit is a weapon designed to combat the engineer's sentry gun first and foremost, it deals 112 base damage as opposed to the stock rocket launcher's 90 so it can't actually one shot scouts all the time
13:05 the stock rocket launcher has a large splash damage radius upon detonation. the splash damage is affected by a variety of conditions but the explosion radius is consistent and is roughly a little bit smaller than the blast radius of pharah's wrist rocket ability in overwatch

for the pyro: he can reflect all projectiles with an airblast as well as push away enemy players; however he cant do anything against bullets (since these are hitscan weapons). limits of the airblast are that it cant be blindly spammed due to a small cooldown (fast enough to catch successive rockets from a single player, but not enough that you can just spam and reflect everything), and the fact that it consumes 20 ammo every time out of 200.
Also the airblast requires good timing to perform hence why only more skilled pyros can pull it off consistantly. But pyros that can do that are complete terrors, especially as the most used offensive classes (demoman and soldier, heavy is too slow and too easy to work around in competitive play sicne he needs to maintain a constant like of sight to deal damage while barely being able to move himself while shooting) are BOTH projectile users, with the demoman not even having any ranged weapon that can ignore the airblast (soldier has a shotgun he can use as a backup when facing a pyro)

The Valve engine has A LOT of funky things working within its physics that allows for some crazy movement within games. No Lucio's wall riding does not really correlate to rocket jumping and its movement. Along ramps and certain sloped surfaces the physics in the Source engine does some crazy stuff that allows for the conservation of momentum if utilized properly allowing you to use them as somewhat of a launchpad. Truthfully any class in the game can use them in such ways but Soldier and Demo are the most prevelant due to having an on-demand source of momentum with their explosives and Demo's charging shields to gain a boost from.
The nuances of "Trolldier": TF2 used to release steady streams of new weapons into the game that gave some slight variance to the class function. A scatter gun with more pellets per shot and a knockback function, but only two shots before needing to reload turning Scout into an ambush predator sort of play where he could more effectively 2 tap enemies and even knock them wildly out of position. The Direct Hit as another example, trading the blast radius of the stock rocket launcher and rewarding better aim while also doing more damage to Engineer buildings. In one of the major updates wherein many classes got a slew of new items, Soldier got a set for all his weapon slots paying homage to the 101st Airborn Division of the U.S. Army that fought in WWII. He received a rocket launcher called "The Airstrike" A launcher which had 1 less rocket in the chamber from the stock launcher, and had rockets that did reduced splash damage, but, as a perk, every time you got a kill with it, you'd be able to chamber another rocket, climbing up higher and higher until you could release a devastating barrage of non-stop fire on your opponents with a neigh unlimited clip. This paired well with the launcher's other perk wherein if you were airborne from a rocket jump, it fired at a highly increased rate basically allowing you to reign death from above for absurd damage against the enemy team. To help facilitate the airtime one would like when using such a weapon to get the most out of its increased fire rate Valve gave Soldier the second complimentary item; The "B.A.S.E. Jumper."
The B.A.S.E. Jumper is an item usable by both Soldier and Demoman and was highly prioritized to accommodate an explosive jumping playstyle. Demoman loses his primary weapon for it, and Soldier utilizes it as his secondary. It is an indefinitely deployable parachute that slows the user's fall speed in the air. This can allow for tighter turning while in freefall, and in the case of Soldier, increase the uptime of the Airstrike's improved fire rate. It can be deployed and then deactivated multiple times during a single jump, making movement while using it erratic and unpredictable for the enemy. Even so it largely proves to make the user a very easy target for most classes which means it does not see widespread use outside of people with a very specific playstyle, or just going for a laugh. It was meant to compliment the last part of the kit however...
"The Market Gardener" Named for the disastrous operation in Holland during WWII, the Market Gardener is a shovel melee weapon specifically for Soldier. Soldier's stock primary is an entrenching tool as it is, and he already had some amazing alternatives to speak of such as "The Escape Plan" and "Riding Crop" Initially the Gardener would not catch on due to these better options given its apparent drawbacks. The Escape Plan and Riding Crop both were great tools for getting Soldier out of trouble as they offered move speed based on certain situations. When low on health and unable to rocket jump safely, having such tools were invaluable, and all the Market Gardener provided was a guaranteed critical hit if swung at an enemy while rocket jumping. It had no other improved stats, and in fact, was seen as a downgrade due to not being able to randomly crit at all. It made sense to include it with a kit that focused on rocket jumping and airtime as a contingency to finish off a target as you neared the ground, and fit the theme very well, but was glossed over as rather sub-par on its own. However...
TF2 players are a tenacious breed. When it comes to weapon options, there is always someone who is willing to push the limits of an item's usability, trying different kits and combinations to make something viable, and in the case of the Market Gardener, it held the allure of those who wanted to test the limits of their skills abusing the momentum-based physics of the game, as well as flexing on other players with their game sense and experience. Thus, the Trolldier was born. There have been many incarnations, and even it has its own variants of sub-class now for those who play it but the basic premise for the loadout was thus: Stock Rocket Launcher while learning, but inevitably moving fully over to the Rocket Jumper to fully commit to the play style. The Rocket Jumper has the same amount of chamber rounds as the stock launcher, and will still launch Soldier when rocket jumping, but does no damage from rocket impacts to the user nor the enemy. It is only meant to be a training tool to help people learn to rocket jump.
The B.A.S.E. Jumper- Again, only while learning. Once the understanding of how to air surf in the game is well in hand it is customary to switch to the Mann Treads. These boots offer tighter strafing while airborne, and come with a bonus of dealing stomp damage when landing on enemies, allowing you to double up on damage against something like a Heavy to help finish a frag.
And the key piece, The Market Gardener. Random crits are a fiercely debated topic in the game in terms of fairness and balance. You will find people on both sides with arguments on them. However, earned crits are a different story. For the most part they are accepted and encouraged as when it is the gimmick of the weapon or class at hand based on the skill or effort, it's deemed more acceptable. Perhaps frustrating, but, acceptable. In the case of the Gardener that earned crit is coming with a lot of effort and skill. You are fully committing to jumping into the enemy, and landing your shot for a one-hit kill before trying to jump out again and not die. It is especially perilous after you've gotten a few kills and people now know to be on the watch for you.
Soldier's utility in the game is to frag. He's an excellent duelist and can take on groups of enemies with a medic at his side, or dislodge Sentry guns that are in the open from a safe distance. He's got a lot of use on the front line of the fight, and is excellent at taking space, so, to remove all of those attributes and move to a playstyle of only rocket jumping, and trying to get a single kill earns the monicker of Trolldier. You will be playing Soldier, but will not be able to do the things the team needs Soldier to do, and all for the sake of rage baiting people on the other team. You will die to heavies, you will die to Sentries, you will die to anyone who knows how to outplay Trolldier, you will die. But every now and then, you will get a laugh, and, maybe even find a Trolldier on the enemy team to duel and have a laugh with. Every now and then you will get the unaware pub you can wreak havoc in, but the playstyle is just that, a troll, and we love it.

the rocket jumping and strafing comes from *Quake* games and not just the physics, the first beta game trailer has Soldier(s) do this at end of the trailer. Overwatch on launch had Phara with with "Rocket jump? So, the "Trolldier" is a subclass of the Soldier.
The Trolldier gets rid of all their ranged damage options and instead goes all-in on melee damage.
This means that a Trolldier will rocket jump around the map in order to get melee hits on enemies and insta-kill most classes.
Firstly, instead of the "Rocket Launcher", you equip the "Rocket Jumper", which is a special rocket launcher that reduces the weapon's damage to 0. This means that you can't kill enemies with rockets anymore, but the upside is that you can rocket jump without hurting yourself.
Secondly, you trade in your Shotgun for a pair of shoes called the "Mantreads". These shoes give you more control over your movement while in mid-air, enemies do way less knockback to you, meaning that they can't disrupt your movement while rocket jumping as easily, and lastly, if you land on top of an enemy's head, you no longer take fall damage, and instead they take 3x that fall damage (+ an extra 10 on top).
Lastly, instead of the default Shovel as your melee weapon, you equip the "Market Gardener", which is still a shovel, but has 3 changes compared to the default shovel.
    1. It can't do any random critical hits
    2. It has a slower swing speed
These 2 stats significantly decrease it's DPS, but the last stat more than makes up for it.
    3. Hitting someone with the Market Gardener while rocket jumping gives you a guaranteed critical hit.
Having a guaranteed critical hit on a melee weapon is really powerful, because most melee weapons will insta-kill 7/9 classes this way.

6:50 Hi comp tf2 player here! (tldr killing the enemy medic is one of the best picks you can get)
The reason they're celebrating is because different classes are higher value targets than others, for example a soldier dying in exchange for a medic drop is because if a medic is alive and healing their team long enough they have the potential to either make a teammate invulnerable to all damage for 10 seconds or multiply their damage by 3 for 10 seconds. Both are strong enough to win an objective or hold against a push alone. This doesn't mean a soldier has less value on the team however, the difference is just that a solder can both move to the frontlines after a respawn faster and unless they have a banner do not get more powerful by living longer.

…god I really need to learn how to rocket jump….ANYWAY!
Blue team glowing is known as Ubercharge, which is basically the Ult of tf2. If you heal enough as a medic, you can make you and a teammate invulnerable for several seconds. Yes, it’s kinda op, no, we don’t really care.
That whip is known as the Disciplinary Action, and it makes you and a teammate who you hit with faster, in return for 75% less damage.
Rocket Jumping deals self damage, so you have to limit how much you do so.
The Market Gardener is a shovel that deals crits as long as you’re in the air. But to rocket jump, you deal self damage. We just bypass that with a little weapon called the Rocket Jumper, whose rockets deal zero damage but have all the knock back. Trolldier is a very difficult play style, and people such as Soundsmith (who you should totally react to, btw) have spent YEARS cultivating that skill.
    A yard is three feet.

Yo man, tbh I'd say soldier in TF2 is somewhat mix of junkrat, Lucio and pharah all in one if it comes to his gameplay, shoots projectiles like phara, you jump like junkrat, you slide like Lucio on ramps (most stairs in TF2 are ramps with a stair sprite, basically you can slide on them if you have enough speed)
Also for the trolldier, you need specific melee weapon called market gardener which deals critical damage when in air during rocket jumping, the boots are manntreads that gives you more control over strafing which means you can turn better during rocket jumping, and rocket jumper is basically a weapon that deals no damage and you can jump with it
