An absolute masterclass in how to build a melodic solo from Mark Knopfler, a classic song and performance, outstanding.

This was during their run of sold out shows at Wembley Arena from the 4th to 16th July 1985 which was a record at the time. At that moment they were the biggest band in the world.

40 years on and it is still some of the best music you have ever heard. And yes, I am getting very nostalgic when I hear them cause the 70s and 80s was the time of my adolescence. Luckily, this is not cause for pessimism or any of that, but the just the purest and fondest remembrance.

My dad changed my nappies to this song and Brothers In Arms on Totp. Used to play this concert and Alchemy every Sunday during breakfast. Seen him live since 2001, 9 times brilliant. Still gives me shivers.

I was privileged to see them twice on the “Alchemy” tour and once on this tour. This song has always been special to me, having visited the “Spanish City” twice with my parents, in the mid 60’s. Splitting with a few girlfriends over the years, kind of adds to the melancholy of this song. The intro is amazing- it takes you off to the fairground. The reminiscence at the end brought it all back, in stunning “Hi- Def” I’ll admit, I did shed a tear- Marks emotive playing can do that to anyone. The outro is phenomenal, so well paced, with everyone else sitting in the pocket. Loved seeing Jack Sonni up there with Mark, so sad we lost him last year.❤ Johns bass line was steady as a rock, The Keyboard Twins (Alan and Guy) were doing a great job Terry Williams was phenomenal as usual. As tight a performance as you’ll ever see. Never will be equalled.

Thank you, thank you, thank you :-) for me the absolute best version and presentation of this song. Everything fits perfectly, the intro, the melodic part, the quiet phase and then the build-up at the end is simply brilliant!
Mark is simply the guitar god, John Illsey on bass is always dancing, Alan Clark on the piano is great as always, Terry Willias on the drums is unbeatable and the rest of the band is perfect too.
    Thanks for your good reactions

“Spanish City” was a club near where Mark Knopfler grew up and listened to music live “ “Like the Spanish city to me, when we were kids.“

This was a song about a part of the UK That was an industrial heartland , Spanish city was a fun fair that was a permanent part of Whitley Bay. I spent many summers going there as a kid. Ps thats the old national stadium.

    Hi ‘DAME’
I love how you express your great musical soul for one so young & understand this everlasting backward look at amazing musicianship pre the digital age. Apologies if the following is longwinded but thought you might like to have the following info::
Dire Straits, a brilliantly gifted band of British musicians, were led by Mark Knopfler, a Geordie, and one of the most celebrated British guitar heroes to emerge in the late 1970s and '80s, a phenomenal finger picking guitarist/singer/prolific songwriter/lyricist/composer/musician, who wrote & arranged every song for Dire Straits 6 albums, before leaving the band in 1995. For the most enjoyable video experience of Dire Strait (according to an early statement by MK) it’s best to avoid the ‘official’ videos, & watch their live undubbed performances that have additional content and are a lot more atmospheric. MK has had a helluva musical career, collaborating with many other famous artists, writing music scores for 9 films, & all the wonderful songs & lyrics for the albums made during his ‘Solo’ career with another band of multitalented musicians. Their 10th album was released this April 2024.

(Inspired by Britain’s short war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, way back in 1982, Mark Knopfler’s emotive song & lyrics ‘Brothers in Arms ‘focuses on the pointlessness of war. The song is a timeless anti-war song which has become an anthem for many ex-servicemen & women & the men & women serving in the armed services today. He sings the lyrics in the voice of a soldier dying on the battlefield
    I❤️MK with DS & Solo

Mark Knopfler just released a new album last month. The man never has rested on his laurels and keeps making new music. 6 Dire Straits albums, 1 Notting Hillbillies album, 10 solo albums, one with Chet Atkins, one with Emmylou Harris, multiple collaborations and several movie soundtracks. This is a huge rabbit hole, enjoy the journey.

In short: DS was a pure guitar band for the first 2 albums, Once Upon A Time In The West/Alchemy Live 1983 or Water Of Love are great, very relaxed and unique at the time, then the keyboard player came along. An exceptional, surprising song with transitions is Private Investigation (no.2 in the UK, a hit all over Europe) or the simply beautiful ballad Romeo And Juliet (single hit), both live standards e.g. Alchemy 1983, London 1985 or On The Night 1992. I have fun discovering👍,

There are two venues at Wembley on the same site , the outdoor wembley stadium which is the national football venue for England and then the indoor arena , both are huge venues. In July 1985 the Live aid all day concert was staged at the stadium and Dire straits played there in the afternoon then in the evening they crossed over to the Arena and played their own concert as part of the live alchemy tour - that must have been quite the day!! You should dive into the Live aid concert lots of epic performances ( not just Queen) You should definitrely try Private Investigations from Dire straits on the night tour - it is possibly their most atmospheric song - unforgettable You taught me a new word today that makes me happy!!

It's a great story (although it was the Brothers in Arms tour not the Love Over Gold/Alchemy one which was a couple of years earlier). Apparently Bob Geldof was lobbying hard for Dire Straits to headline Live Aid, but they felt they couldn't let down all those people who had bought tickets for their evening gig at Wembley Arena. Apparently Geldof was having some difficulty getting big names to sign on and wanted Dire Straits because they were basically the biggest band in the world at that time. In the end they agreed to play in the afternoon and their 20 minute set, despite comprising just two songs, was the longest of the concert. Other big name bands signed on as a result of Dire Straits agreeing to perform.

I really enjoyed your reaction to this song. This was a masterful performance of a very nostalgic and emotional song. This video was recorded when the Dire Straits were on a world tour. The tour included 248 concerts in 23 countries in one year! More than two and a half million people attended the tour. They were the biggest band then, with a record selling album - Brothers in Arms. It was the first album in history to sell over one million copies in CD format. All together the album sold 30,000,000 copies. Even though, in my opinion it is not their best. This song is from a different album.
