  • I've never been more ruthless than after I became a gardener and critters decimated my garden. Hopefully this trick to critter proof your garden will help save you the hateful, malicious thoughts I endured. It's the ONLY thing that has worked to protect our garden from these pests. Having used this method the last 2 years with success, I'm no longer seeing red and maybe even slowly letting go of my grudge against the little jerks, although they'd still be wise to avoid my garden at all costs!

    Rabbits can eat through that mesh easily, but it does keep out deer and squirrels. Found out the hard way: Rabbits ate all the green beans right at harvest time, caught them in the act. Had to replace some of the mesh and double up on the mesh around the bottom outside of my garden area which mostly deters the rabbits, but not always .

    I've never heard of squirrels coming out at night.

    Niiice. I put either a tennis ball or 4" section of pool noodle at the top of t posts. This keeps the netting from tearing. Godspeed fellow gardener, :J

    I got a Shetland sheepdog dog guarding my garden with a Black Labrador for backup. I use cattle wire around my garden to keep the dogs out. My Shetland Sheepdog is very vocal and she does kill rabbits. Before I got my Sheltie my Labrador did nothing. Rabbits had it their way and my Labrador would just look at rabbits and fall asleep. Very mellow.

    My garden enemy is our sons cat. Pickles has proven to be a worthy adversary to whom I tip my hat. However, this just may be the secret weapon I have been looking for to end pickles reign of terror.

      Pickles might be my favorite garden enemy. It may just be his name for me but he sounds like he's got some sass!

    I was thinking of just laying chicken wire on the ground and electrifying it.
    I tried bird netting to keep the squirrels out but they just tore holes in it.

    Doesn’t work for me …squirrels chewed my construction fencing mesh a lot thicker than the video one and half inch mesh to get to my Zucchini plants ….I still do it bc some protection is better than no protection …from Toronto Canada …enjoyed your video and keep on fighting the critters .

    They are a pain I feel your frustration but here is an easier deterrent that absolutely works is placing 💿 with fishing line in perimeter of garden areas also keeps birds out hope this helps someone protect their food 🫡

    Were the squirrels able to bite into the plastic netting to make a whole big enough for them to get through? I tried a different plastic netting but they bit off parts and they were able to get in. 🤬

    You can also put a bowel of water away from the plants to keep them hydrated if that's what they are looking for.

    Designated area for those critters for them to graze. Our homes had taken away their land. Coexist and help them out.

    Couldn't you actually staple most of the netting to the wood except where you might want to open it up?

  • @trumpetingangel
    @trumpetingangel 10 місяців тому

    You could attach most of it with the staples, and save a few zip ties for opening it at each end.

    I think it might have been raccoons you were dealing with. At night, one bite makes me think that. I believe squirrels would have no problem breaking in. I used that kind of barrier in the past and whatever critter just chewed through it. I had to up grade to metal. Your tomatoes look great btw.

    • @Heavensoon7
      @Heavensoon7 Місяць тому

      Rabbits eat through the plastic mesh and can also fit their heads through the metal wire fence. You have to put up the plastic mesh or metal fence and add the rabbit/ chicken fence wire around the bottom to keep them out, and they can sometimes still dig under that, but not usually.

    I found they just chew right though the plastic Netting. Didn't work for me. Nothing works. They dig under metal Netting. 🤷‍♀️

    • @thehopefulgardener4692
      @thehopefulgardener4692  Рік тому +1

      Wow, those are some seriously motivated squirrels!
      They tried a couple times after we first placed our barrier and if we saw them attempt it we let our dog out. I think the netting slowed them down too much for comfort around the dog and eventually they didn't even try anymore and by the next year I had it up early enough they didn't even know what they were missing. My peach tree is a different story though.... A very sad story.

      Catch them in a live trap. Once you've got your squirrel, just set the trap down in a trash can full of water. Cheers.

    However, you used "umm" 12 times in 2 minutes,
    it is a bad and unflattering habit for an adult in any kind of speech.

    Catch them in a live trap. Drop the trap inside a trashcan full of water and walk away.
