It's not a rule yet, but one we should establish: Do NOT put barn doors on bathrooms!
I second this!
Forget the barn doors anywhere inside a home.
Yes I do not like barn doors
Disagree in part. 30 years ago I was able to design my bedroom, bathroom, closet. I put in 2 pocket doors which have been amazing. Had I moved into a place where they didn't plan for that, I would definitely install a sliding door rather than have a door hanging open in the bedroom taking up space and being unsightly. They definitely have their place and don't have to look like a barn. Does no good to make people feel bad that they have one.
So true, and so awkward for everyone!
It always makes me laugh .. that we spend the money to have hardwood floors .. then cover them up with large area rugs. ✨
Fab rules! Agree with all! (OF COURSE you are NEVER wrong!) Would like to submit another lighting rule not to break: MATCH YOUR KELVINS!
Choose which warm or cool, but go with ONE all through your home. What's a kelvin you ask? Kelvin is used in lighting to measure the color temperature of a light bulb. The higher the Kelvin number it whiter it will be. Mixed match light temperatures for me, BONKERS.
When you buy a light bulb look on the package, it will provide a number like 2200k is candlelight/warm, 3000 is soft white, and 4000 is bright white. (there are others). Now get back to that cuppa! ☕
Thanks! Question: in spaces like the kitchen or bathroom, is there an exception? May want bright light for reading a recipe, but want your living room to be warmer.
@@treluvstrees999 As V showed us with her new BESTIE APP, the dimmable features enable you to soften the intensity of the light. Perhaps the answer you seek is dimmable lighting/which allows you to adjust the scale of brightness is a great option for your reading? Hope that helped.
Use all programmable lights from the same manufacturer, and you can change the Kelvins in a room according to need. A gentle warm glow in the kitchen when you're sitting for an evening chat with a teen away from the rest of the family, or bright daylight values for washing dishes and cleaning up. Default setting matches what the light outdoors is doing, settling at "sunset" from sunset to sunrise, unless someone in the house is a shift worker in which case their part of the house is time shifted for their needs.
The only exception is task lighting. If you need to pick out the correct colour embroidery thread for the next part of your work, you need to be able to make your task light hard daylight without inflicting that on the rest of the room. Override the colour setting just on this one light, select your skein, then change back to the evening glow while you stitch. Any paint artists in the household will need to customise their task lighting too!
Thanks for the tip on the dimmers. I dislike brightly lit rooms late at night. It feels unpleasantly aggressive where a dimmed light scheme feels intimate and calming.
Valentina, your home just gets prettier all the time! Adore your videos.
Thank you so much
I’ve been a quiet observer for awhile now, but just wanted to say that these are the kinds of videos I so appreciate on your channel - the ones where you hone in on just a few helpful rules, tips, or techniques that make a huge difference in developing your viewers’ interior design skills, whatever their style. Your ability to analyze and adapt with trends while encouraging people to stay true to their own taste and stick with things they can enjoy for a long time is fantastic. You have a knack for seeing the little things as well as the big picture in a way that helps me easily add class and elegance to my home one step at a time. Thank you!
Negative space and clear flowing walkways are a must. Being mindful of everyone’s organisational styles and clutter thresholds. Every room has to elicit a squeal of delight, a calming breath and an imaginary nod, happy dance and smile from V. ❤ Yes, you’re in my head that much and I love it!
I agree with you Valentina on not placing curtains on your big beautiful windows beside you. Not necessary in my opinion.
Love how excited you get when you share with us and trust me, we get just as excited to listen and learn ❤
Yay! Thank you!
I am no designer, but I personally feel that my home decor should “speak” to the architecture of the house and area where I live. Of course, I add in personal pieces we love from all the many places we have lived, but the over arching decor style goes with the house itself. I’m sure this is not a rule😂😂
So true, that's actually a really good "rule" to live by
I think that's true for the exterior of the home - it needs to blend with the neighborhood and I've deviation from this as people remodel or rebuild homes in traditional neighborhoods and they end up with a very contemporary style that matches nothing else. For the interior, I think that you can deviate from the exterior styling or other nearby home interiors.
I recently moved into a 110-year-old house, and some of my beach house things don't sing in this house, so we've stopped trying to fight it and we've gone with what the house wants in a more modern way, and it feels so much more comfortable and welcoming. I can hear the house say thank you every time we reveal a detail former owners had covered up.
Thank you for sharing the curtain rules. It’s also helpful to know that the very expensive custom quote we received is normal. I too would rather go on vacation.😂❤️
I thintk one should also ad the cultural perspective. In Scandinavia, we would rather have a bare wooden floor than a big rug to cover it. We have persian rugs for decor, or runners. For me, it is more a continental Europe or American thing with the large rugs. And the wall to wall carpets, you dont find them here. Otherwise I agree 🙂
So true, it's fascinating to see the differences in design choices around the world.
I dont have a rug. I tried, looked awful in my small room. The floors are nice and I like the feel it gives to my living room.
Fully agree, the rugs are not naturally scandinavian style, and they get soo dirty!!! Even in you bedroom where you wont wear outdoor shoes, horribly dirty. Had a wall to wall soft carpet in my bedroom when living in the US, and I had to use a carpet cleaning machine at least every 3 months... and the water was gross each time... and dont get me started on the large area rugs in he living rooms.... soo much dirt collecting there... much easier to keep nice wood floors clean. 😊
this part. Any rug you can't easily take out and wash is too big. Have in-floor heating and your feet won't get cold on a wooden floor, and what else is a rug for other than collecting dirt?
@@tealkerberus748 Agree, just got rid of two large area rugs I bought when in the US. While a good rug-cleaner can do a lot, just feels so much cleaner now with just the hardwood floors... ☺️
Valentina….not sure what style curtains you want for your tall room…. But I’ve made all the curtains for my 1.5 story windows….SO easy and MUCH cheaper.
It’s been a few months since I stopped by this channel, and was pleasantly surprised by the excellent, rock-solid advice in this video! I very much appreciate the “hot tip” regarding the dimmable lightbulbs, too.
As to any “rule” I think should be included: warm temp bulbs in entertaining spaces, with bright white lighting limited to work spaces. Warm hued lighting makes a space feel cozy and inviting - and makes your wall art appear more high-end.
Thanks for a great video!
No carpet in kitchen, DR, bathroom for sanitary reasons. No power cords stretched across a room that create tripping hazard. Light sockets always need a light bulb, do not leave empty. Do not store papers near cooktop.
Soft white bulbs on dimmers can add a very elegant touch to a home. In addition, mixing different life sources (overhead can lights, table lamps, LED strips) in a rooms (separately controlled, with dimmers) is a great way to toggle between the "mood"/use of the room. For example, overhead can lights, pendants, etc. can be great for task lighting, whereas the LED strips and table lamps can give a more romantic mood. We use ceiling mounted 3" LED lights on gimbles to illuminate wall art as well. WHen you have an app to control your lights, it becomes easy to group lights and brightness levels into different scenes for quick access or to be even automatically triggered. Whaatever you do, stick with one color temperature (preferably soft shite - 2700k to 3000k). I recently toured a new home for sale in Atlanta that was selling for $4M and had a combination of bright white bulbs mixed in with a few soft white bulbs that really stood out.
These home decor rules are extremely important for scale, proportion, balance as well as looking cohesive.
Please Valentine more more on home decor rules . I wish I had known this long ago. This whole weekend I'm going to work on these rules thank you
The rule of thirds or threes I like a lot.
I'm a drape skim and mild puddler, I think both looks are great, however if you are a puddler like me (you must lift the drape and sweep/dust beneath the drape)!
I would never have a barn door in my house.
They can add great visual interest to an area, as well as serve a practical purpose of room isolation. Reclaimed, stained wood looks great, but even new wood painted a solid color can add a nice appeal. There are so many options you can do with a barn door that would look inappropriate if the room had a regular door.
I had one for my bathroom in my 20s. Never again. If I bought a house with one, it'd have to go
barn doors are questionable even in barns.
Can you do a video on paint, including options for trim and ceilings where you might have two colours in a room?
I agree. I’d love to get dimmers on everything. But as of now, I just have different kinds of lights for different times of day. Task lighting on the main switch and mood lighting on my lamps and under lighting LED strips at night, for a soft glow all night as a nightlight.
Just last summer I had some of our artwork reframed, it made a huge difference to how it looked and how I felt about the pieces, I was ready to get rid of some, but now I am happy to have them in our home again. I was lucky to have found a place that was very affordable, not super fast, but excellent work and price, and since I was not in a huge rush it worked out great 😊
Always worth it to reframe. Enjoy!
@@MicheleLaCagnina thanks 😁, it has made me fall in love with pieces that I enjoyed years ago and that have meaning to us 👏
Hi Valentina, Mary Naleway from the Bay Area commenting again. As always, great content! Your stunning home as a backdrop doesn't hurt either! I would add SCALE and proper placement to the list. Primarily, wall art, mirrors, etc. Decor and accessories also fall into this category. As a professional home stylist, I've seen a single postage stamp size art hung on a large white wall. Additionally, wall decor hung way too high. The list goes on with tiny or massive pillows and tchotchke museums!
I finally got my color schemes. My color schemes are coming together slowly because you helped me make sense of what I was trying to accomplish. The living room is black, ivory and, tan with faux greenery. The kitchen that faces the open area living room is black, white with some wood accents and stainless steel appliances. Bedroom is chocolate, cream and tan so it has a connection to the other parts of the house. My bathroom has a black ceiling, white tile floors and white walls. Now I need new bedside tables. However, I'm being picky this time so they match the decor and not my emotional tie to them. Thanks so much for ideas and the knowledge!
My curtains fall just above the baseboard because there is an air register installed right underneath the window 🙃 They could be slightly lower but I’m in a rental and don’t care that much 😂
I don’t like the big bald spot between the rod and the top of the window. My curtains touch the floor almost but they are not up to the ceiling. And honestly I don’t care that much either.
While I generally agree, the “problem” curtain sketch was actually beautiful in its framing of the curved window. Also, in period homes the curtains help a period look (and they WERE hung differently at different times).
Not everyone wants a pared down look.
BTW I like how your fireplace flames are really highlighted by your caramel colored sofa pillow! Do you have one more caramel accent? Could really warm up that room for fall that way!
I am new to looking at decorating homes videos, i must say i really like listening to your ideas.
Im living in Ireland, so unfortunately, we don't have access to all your fabulous stores.
But where theirs a will their's a way.
LOVE your ENERGY!!
Dont like puddled drapes. I’ll be sure to either step on them or vacuum them up
Agreed, for me they need to come down at least below the top of the baseboard, ideally just a tad above the floor. Otherwise they are a dust magnet, get stepped on, vacuumed up, etc.
If they puddle too much, especially on hard surface floors, it just becomes a place where dust bunnies go to die!
@@rangerrecon yes agree with you!
@@firestick4991 yes, Absolutely!
They need to be a couple of millimetres above the floor, so they give the illusion of touching the floor , but not actually doing so.
I have no curtains on my massive half round windows in my living room. I back to forested acreage so totally private.
No rug under a dining set. It could get messy if food is dropped on it.
The best invention of all time, the smart light bulb. I have this, in every light fixture in my apartment and it's a game changer 💛 The curtains... every time my mother comes to my house, she tells me that "my curtains are too high, too long, that it's not supposed to hide the paint on the walls" 😆😆 I let go of my explanations about curtains with her! Nice video Valentina 💛
Couldn't agree more!
Yes! Vacation? Leave car in the driveway and use the smartlights!
I’ve recently hung curtains at ceiling height and it’s added about 1ft of height. Can’t believe it. Makes me stand taller in my room and after 4 months I’m still letting a “wow” out every time I walk into the rooms. I also take a large calming breath. Wouldn’t it be fun to challenge your Mum to hang hers higher and then see her reaction! At least do it in Photoshop for her. ❤
@@fionaschiffl8065 She can do what she wants her home. She souldn’t ask my opinion because she would have without filter 😅 It’s more the fact that criticizes my home (curtains, TV « too low » her tv breaks my neck because it is so high… etc), when I am nothing asked. I know my tv is at good height, my curtains enlarges and has a WOW effect, everyone tells me that it’s great, we want to try, except her who just criticizes everything 😆 It has become a running gag, because she criticizes everything 🤪
How about adding how to style the furniture? Where to place couches, chairs, and lamps?
Great information, thanks!
Im changing all my lights to Philips Hue. They are great!
Sooo every time we watch your videos, we keep forgetting to comment so today, finally, I’m writing a comment: WE love your LAUGH (so infectious) and your videos are awesome. Also when you have your hot drink at the start of the video, makes us want to make one every time. Also, need to say how it’s so apparent how you and your husband have a happy marriage. It totally shows on camera. Keep up the entertaining videos
This is so helpful! We are building our home this summer and I need help designing our spaces and this really got me planning in a new way.Thank you!
Enjoy designing! I’d ask the builder to put some studs where you want to hang your rods if possible so you can drill into them. 😊
That is a great idea! Thank you!
Your room looks warmer with all of the greenery
Paid a fortune for honeycomb curtains which look modern. Normal curtains are redundant after honeycomb
Bathroomy stuff in odd places usually happens in apartments that did not originally have a full bathroom. It's quite common here in buildings that are 100+ years old and haven't gone through a complete remodeling yet. As a student, I lived in a place with a shower in the kitchen and a separate toilet room with a tiny sink. Now all these apartments have proper bathrooms but the rents are no longer affordable for most students.
What color and grand fireplace paint have you? It’s lovely!
You give us such great tips. Thank you ! Please tell me where I can find that black bowl that you used yesterday to make the salad. I love it!
Trying to get my husband to install dimmer in dining room. It is so bright . I break the curtain rules. 1908 house with beautiful trim around windows. Do not want to cover.
I like mine an inch off the floors, especially with a cat. I have low ceilings and the higher the better, without being too high of course.
I just replaced all my curtains with Roman blinds to show off my 1905 trim. Fantastic decision.
They are super easy to install. Don't wait for a husband, in my opinion.
The best length and height for curtains in older homes is usually whatever was the norm when the house was built. If they put beautiful trim around their windows, they probably didn't intend to cover it with fabric.
As for me, your home should be a place where rules are meant to be bent, and style knows no bounds based on your preference. It should reflect on who you are however, it's also not bad to consider professional suggestions. 😉😉
I don’t like curtains that pool like jeans. I rather have a curtain that doesn’t touch the floor. It seems more sanitary.
My favorite is when they just touch the floor or slightly pool.
Same mam. A inch off the floor or so. I hate dust gathering on curtains, or the cat playing with them because .. well its there and clearly a cat toy
@@pompommania put a toaster near the curtains 😭
I don’t like 2 story high drapes…. They look ridiculous .
And I cant imagine having to clean them lol
As far as the rug goes I have an angled fireplace. What do I do? A larger rug other than one that just goes under the coffee table will hit the angled fireplace.
One option is to measure where you want a rug, then go to a carpet store and have them cut a remnant and bind the edges. That’s the easiest way to get a custom shape. There are low pile carpets, patterned carpets, lots of options. Some friends of mine did that and it didn’t cost more than an area rug the same size.
I can attest to this solution's effectiveness at least for a while. We eventually removed the angled fireplace since my sense of symmetry was offended constantly.
I love dimmers too.
When you know the purpose of your living room and how many you would love to entertain for, but the 120 lb German shepherd owns one whole wall with his own loveseat 😂😂 no other decor can be placed nearby either.
A German Shepherd owns the whole house!!!
@@yourconnection9303 so true and the neighbors if they'd let him 😂
@@lesliewallace9665 And they own you too!! But that's why we love them! 🐾❤️🐾
Regarding the curtains, what if you plan on installing crown molding. How far down from the crown molding should you hang the curtains?
The top trim on my windows is about 8 inches (typically) away from my top molding, so I positioned the curtain rods to be half-way in between the two. The trick is to make sure the curtain are long enough to reach the floor. If you're buying off-the-shelf curtains that come in standard pre-set sizes, then you need to take into account setting the rod at a height that has the curtains hanging on the floor how you prefer (dropped on the floor, just touching the floor, etc.).
Thank you
if you build a pelmet against the ceiling, the moulding can either butt up against the pelmet at either end, or go around it. Pelmets are great for stopping light leaking over the top of a curtain, or draughts circulating against the window.
Valentina, what do you think about instead of art, framing my landscape photography from places I visited? Thank you!
I’m not a professional designer - it’s a hobby I’ve had for years and I believe your own photography makes wonderful ‘art’ to hang on walls. Where I live I can choose different papers to have photos printed on and I would definitely make sure you include matts for your photos rather than just putting them into an ordinary frame. if you were going to group them together I would use the same frame and matt for all of the photos you use. You could also experiment with maybe having your photos in black and white instead of the standard colour photos. Valentina has some great videos on choosing art for your home. My style is eclectic and I still find i haven’t watched a video of hers where I haven’t learnt something that I could incorporate some way into my home or that of friends when they ask for help.
Love all your video! And I just receive my H and My order ❤
I've gotten so many great tips from you. I love it!
this is everythingggg!!!!!
Thank you!
Ok I WANT those light bulbs.
Valentina- I saw the Finnley black & white bed at Arhaus….it looks like something you would just love 😊
I absolutely love that bed!
I agree with all of them! You crack me up Valentina - great video.
As a fellow designer, I agree with all of these!
Yes did Corey tell you we have appointment Sat to do a tour of cabins
This is off the subject, but will you give me advice? I was looking at a new build home, but I decided not to buy the home because there was black tile on all the bathroom floors including the laundry room. It felt very dark and dirty looking. I had read that the black tile will change in color down the road and the black grout can turn grayish. The rooms did not have a lot of natural light so that darkness was very dreary to me. I know you love black, but I did not put an offer in that home. What is your thought on this subject?
Another great video V!!! Love the rules!! Tfs!!
Apart from geat episode, as always! Agree with all you listed! ❤ but ….. Those pillows next to you. 😍😍😍
the black with ivory trim/ lines!!! 🤩
Amazing. So elegant, so high end! Where did you get them from? 🙏 love form Europe 😘
I agree with you 100% on all the rules 💫
I'm not a fan of buying art to match a room. Art is personal and so I buy what I like and moves me. It doesn't have to have the colors in the room. That is like matchy matchy furniture sets for me. I get why ppl do it as that's how it looks in catalogs.
Do you have any suggestions on hanging curtains with a tray ceiling. Thanks.
Best bench with back for round dining table that has 4 chairs but need addl seating when entertaining?
I think I need to get some dimmers… 😊
Let’s talk rugs. I need a Roberts little bit larger than anything I can find. I was going to have a carpet remnant bound and use that, but that is so boring. I want a patterned rug ideally 11 x 11 or 11 x 12. But it seems 9 x 12 is the largest I can find. Where do you find larger patterned rugs?
Curtains are like neckties. Hang at the belt buckle, a little higher, or a very little below, but there is a correct way. Just like curtains, no?
#1 rule to break “art must be hung at 57 inches” I tried that and everything looked wrong. Some pieces needed to be dropped to connect with the furniture underneath. A couple had to go up to make sense with the architecture of the area. One series is hung at about 36” because it is a kids room and they just aren’t very tall!
Yes! We do the same things. I follow the rules that make things look correct. Otherwise I go with what looks and feels right.
I agree
For the curtains, what do you recommend for those of us who have baseboard heaters?
This is not a comment associated with this great video...but can you tell me what white paint color you used for homes exterior??? Thank u so much!
Be careful with dimmer switches in an old house. The way ours is wired we are unable to have them. Light bulbs are intriguing for lamps.
Using dimmable LED bulbs might work since they draw far less power. I grew up in a 100 year old house with wiring from the 1950s. Talk to a licensed and experienced electrician. You might be pleasantly surprised. There may be some workaround you could use.
@@chickchoc Thanks for the information. Our wiring is from the late 1920's, cloth covered wiring if that doesn't send chills down your spine. We've been told by an electrician it is stable.
I think if you live in New York, it's okay to have a bathtub in your kitchen.
😂
Do you hang the curtains way higher than the windows?
Where do you hang curtain panels on windows on a frame wall ? Can send pic..
Great video! I think the problem with arched windows is there is no perfect solution for them really...they were invented by the Romans and I wonder if they used curtains back then? So I would avoid arched windows altogether in I could in windows I need privacy.
So true, they're a real pain to work with.
question.. is there´s something that keeps you from hanging the curtains close to the ceiling.. should you go lower or just leave that window empty?
Hour house is a f...g Dreams
FIREPLACES! It must make sense and relate to other parts of the house that are in view of the same room. I see fireplaces all the time that look like someone got overzealous with creativity, rather than keeping it simple and classy.
Our heaters are under our windows. Not possible to have drapes hitting the floor. Fire fire fire.
Rule that I think should be added: Mind your furniture heights! When some of the furniture soars, and other is very low and squat, especially when they are all jumbled together, garage-sale style; it ends up being chaotic and uncomfortable. A pair of tall wing back chairs or a tall rocking chair balanced by a tall plant elsewhere is fine. But every single piece in the room (and I've seen this) a completely different height and scale than every other piece - no go IMHO.
It may !😂
What if the walls above the window are a little high like 2-3 feet above a standard window, 3x5 I think. Would you still put curtains to the ceiling?
yes, still put them at ceiling height. it will make the windows look much larger than they are.
Interior and exterior design continuity...I lime to see different styles of home in a neighborhood...what bugs me is filling a mid mod home with traditional design...oddly the opposite works bc addi g mod furniture to say a victorian home speaks to the evolution of function and design.
I agree about the rug placement. I wanted to buy a bigger rug for my bedroom and was told it was too big and to get a 5x8. Well, I should have listened to myself because now I have a smaller rug and it looks stupid, Don’t know what to do now. I wish I watched this first.
Put it over a large rug. So have two rugs.
I hate rugs under dining table…think red wine, pasta sauce😂
On the curtains what if there are several feet between the ceiling and the top of the window ? I have 13 foot high ceilings but there is about 4 ft between the ceiling and the top of the windows..
Valentina do you think 1 chair or 2 chairs is best in master bedroom?
what are your favorite white shades?
Whaaa? Was that a bathroom in a kitchen or kitchen in a bathroom? New definition of multi tasking!Ha,ha
How do you keep your white furniture white? I would never buy white furniture.
Great tips Valentina ❤
$10,000.00 for the drapes? Yikes!!!
My thoughts exactly!
I saw houses for that much, albeit needing work, but still (Maine).
@@HouseofValentina ☝️Or, you can learn to make them yourself!😀 I can just see you sewing away Valentina! Actually, I know someone who loves sewing her own clothes, coats, etc., and drapes of all sizes and fabrics. She does this in her spare time because she says it relaxes her while playing music at the same time. She made drapes years ago for my mother's large living room window - wall to wall - floor to ceiling. The looked gorgeous. So many people wanted hire this woman to make them for their home, but she wasn't interested.
Are there any ceiling fan rules? Sometimes it’s a necessity in the hotter areas.
For single story rooms, I like the fans as close to the ceiling as possible, to make the room feel as large as possible and not risk getting hit by people/things. Also, I think it is important for the style to match the room. For example, a room that is contemporary or even transitional likely isn't going to look good with a fan that has a light fixture with tulip style glassware.
I don’t know if it was Valentina, but I saw a designer video that said as close to the ceiling as possible and match ceiling color.
I’ve heard that as well but then looking at what’s available, they sure have more to choose from that would likely not match a ceiling so I wondered what her take on that would be. 🤔
That toilet by the stove requires good ventillation or one might blow them a sky light !😂but that ma resolve the issue!😅🤣🤣🤣
That's taking convenience to a whole different level!
Thank you dear for taking us along. Can't wait what the KKUWAN queen picked up at Fendi
