An air flow restrictor is really useful for air cylinders. Put one on each air line going to the cylinder, and you can not precisely control the speed of the actuation in each direction, but still keep the pressure high so you get a strong force that moves more slowly.

@@Iliketomakestuff I use them at work when building tools. Sometimes you need it to close slowly, open fast, and have high holding power. The flow restrictor on each tube to the cylinder and a pressure regulator on the supply side gives tons of room for adjustability.
You would like to control the air that's leaving the cilinder though. Otherwise the pressure builds slowly. You want even pressure on the pressurized side and control the speed of the back pressure falling.
I'm pretty sure that cylinder has restrictors built in. They are the set screws next to each port. I believe you loosen them to increase flow and increase speed. They also appear to already be restricting given how slow the cylinder is moving.

The Trap-Jaw Ant (genus Odontomachus) has very powerful mandibles that do the same thing, which they use to catch prey or launch themselves into the air to escape from predators.
Not quite. Trapjaw and Dracula ants are spring powered, and are one of the extremely few animals known to have 'gears' built into its biology (the other ones I know of are some species of flea and a few tiny crustaceans). The head musculature pulls the jaws into position (hence why trapjaw heads are disproportionately big compared to say something like Argentine ants), keeping them perfectly mirrored to eachother using the interlocking gears at the base of the mandibles, at which point they lock into position at 180°+ of eachother, like loading a crossbow. The triggers are modified hairs between the jaws, so as soon as they touch something (and accidental firings happen WAAAY more often than you think, to the point that you start to question the evolutionary path) their jaws will bust the latches and swing shut (holds the record for fastest movement of any land dwelling organism) at the same time, and yet again thanks to the interlocking gears, they snap shut at exactly the same time even if only one latch is busted.

Sort of, but the mechanism is different. It's not a piston action. It's a spring loaded action from a modified chitin spring mechanism and gearing within their jaws. LOL I just realized that Levi already explain to this as I was writing. But you're not entirely wrong. Because your statement said that a quote VERSION of this existed in nature. It's just that the mechanism is different.
Other lesser known He-Man characters: Power-Hose, Armbox, Foamsmith.
The supreme application for a game of "got your nose"! Awesome video! The level of goof was balanced with practical shop talk. The little editing jabs and jokes were well placed and added to the overall enjoyment. I really wanna go play in the shop now!

Not sure why I get such Mark Rober vibes, but I’m here for it! I loved seeing the prototyping process in this project. And I appreciate that you can comfortably say “I have never used this thing before, so let’s just see what happens!”
I like the learning/playing focus of this video. And I love the inclusion of other team members, even for just the briefest commentary. Could make for some good B-roll in the future. It takes the focus off of Bob and puts it on the entire team effort. (No offense Bob, the team dynamic is just so dang entertaining).
These are my favorite ILTMS videos. I enjoy all of them but the "let's figure out how to make this crazy thing" videos are the best. Like Optimus Prime's gun. That one was amazing.
This was awesome!! As a mechanical engineer, this is pretty much my every day... though on a larger scale and a lot is figured out in cad first. When you said you were going to set the pressure over 100psi I cringed knowing how violent it would be. I use hydraulics in my designs (not a good fit for what you were doing) but they are much more controllable and can be fine tuned generally better. 👍
I ~LOVE~ this. I found this channel back when you did the giant Soundwave, so another 80s throwback made real is a wonderful treat.

Totally unexpected, but brilliant! Pneumatics look like a lot of fun to use
Where you have the exhaust "mufflers" (brass thing next to the intake) you can get versions that have a needle valve that will let you control the actuators speed more precisely. You actually don't need (and probably don't want) that much pressure, the pressure affects the amount of force the actuator puts out, it's the exhaust valves that control the speed. Notice that the speed didn't change all that much when you upped the pressure. Also, a reputable supplier will provide you with the specs on the actuator, how much force it will produce at what pressure.
FYI - the SPEED of the cylinder is based on the flowrate not the pressure. if you want the force, but not the speed - install a flow limiting device like a needle valve.

I am not sure if anyone else suggested it, but on that air cylinder it has little brass screws on the top and bottom near the air ports. Those are flow controls. You can adjust them to speed up or slow down the actuation speed without losing pressure. Using pressure to adjust the speed is not reliable, using a flow control, or a cylinder with them in works a charm. Just look up airflow control on amazon. They have a ton of different types. They will help a great deal in your future projects.
Nice Project, i'm usually not big into prop making but when mechanics get involved its pretty cool :) Some pneumatic cylinders have adjustment set screws next to the inlets with which you can adjust the speed of the throw without needing a regulator. Couldnt see in the video if yours has these. But its a great way to adjust the speed without having to reduce pressure, therefore you keep the clamping pressure. You can even control the speeds seperatly. Its basicly just restricting the flow.
One thing that would be kinda neat would be to make Hurricane Hordak's arm piece. It wouldn't be too complicated I would think. It's pretty much just an interchangeable fan blade/drill chuck on the end of your arm. You would likely only need a single motor to spin whatever attachment you put in it.

Note for your next air cylinder project......
because of the effective area of the head on the retract side being smaller compared to the extend side you could have achieved a stronger clamping pressure with the same amount of air pressure if you had the jaws close when the ram moved outward instead of inward. I'm gonna guess you may be getting only half the strength you could.
