Dyne Explained | Final Fantasy 7 lore

- Let's discuss Dyne! In this character analysis we're looking at the Dyne backstory, and how his fleeting appearance impacts game events and particularly how we perceive the story of Barret Wallace.
FF7 was hallmarked by the death of Aeris, but in many ways the Dyne suicide was more tragic and momentous for a JRPG game, which rarely host characters that conclude on a hopeless unredemptive note.
Dyne is introduced to the Final Fantasy 7 story after people start getting murdered in the Gold Saucer theme park by a man with a 'gun arm'. Barret is initially accused of the crime owing to him fitting this description, but once imprisoned he reveals there was 'another man' who had the operation.
A brief flashback to Corel shows Dyne, Barret's best friend who tragically dies after being shot by Shinra operatives and falling into a ravine. His wife Eleanor is murdered, and his town razed to the ground by the Shinra company. Barret adopts Dyne's biological daughter Marlene, and presumes his friend dead in the years to come.
In the contemporary events of the game we find Dyne in the desert prison, a shadow of his former self. Unrepentant and unbending when it comes to wanting to destroy the world because of what Shinra has done to him, and how he failed to stop them...
This episode considers-
The Barret backstory
Dyne origins
The monumental Dyne death
Nihilism in Final Fantasy 7
Corel desert prison

What would happen if He is in Dffoo?
Dyne wanting to kill Marlene so she can be reunited with her dead mom is probably the darkest thing in the entire franchise
Yeah he was a pretty intense dude!
Redcoat really hope they keep that in the remake
Can't really blame him for snapping....he lost everything and he was the only one that was right And not one person heeded his warnings.
The messed up part is stuff like that happens in real life too. They don't ask the kid or anything. I can only imagine the fear & pain they must've felt. Someone you trusted more then anyone going that to you.
One of the saddest parts of the whole story. When he killed himself and barret said his hands arnt any cleaner was extremely sad. It was such a deep story
I'd like to see his story being fleshed out more in the remake.
DDUUUDDDEEE! So glad you made this video on Dyne. He was probably my favorite non playable character in 7.
Thanks man. Yeah I loved Dyne too, interested to see if he gets any development in the remake,.
some say dyne was a cetra like aerith because he could hear the voice of his dead wife, then again he could just be crazy.
fun fact: the person that created barret's and dyne gun arm is that doctor chick from dirge of cerberus.
You mean Lucrecia? Or someone else?
Oh. You mean that doctor chick who's missing an arm?
@@Coreisus yeah she has one arm and one eye I also forget her name lol.
@@chrollox6404 one leg I'm pretty sure too

Wow interesting choice for a review. I enjoyed the graphics as well. Reviewing secondary characters like dyne , opens so many more doors.
Great video! I'm curious to see how the remake will handle this. You hardly ever see a Nihilist portrayed in popular western media. Hopefully this story arch is expanded upon.
Yes we'll see, the remake offers a lot of potential for secondary characters. It already looks like Biggs, Wedge and Jessie are getting more characterisation.
I'm happy I watched this video. With how much more indepth they went in the remake, I hope they do the same with Dyne. Always thought he was an interesting character. Thank you for the video.
I always wanted more of him. But I'm happy we got a backstory at least. Man, I really wonder how many times he did something like that? Similar events like the gold surger massacre. I wouldn't mean seeing the story from his point of view leading up to his end in ff7
10:05 An interesting aspect that I hope they choose to capture in the remake that is shown here in this shot is that Dyne himself, prior to his death, has his arms stretched out in a Jesus Christ pose. He too embodies the shape of the cross. From left to right; daughter, mother, father three crosses at the edge of desert canyon.
Yeah that was a great scene, I hope they retain it too
good catch
I haven't played FFVII, but Barret's story keeps getting better and better the more I hear it. By my standards (which I know aren't everyone else's) this is the hardest hitting and most poignant story I've heard in video games save for maybe Majora's Mask.
It's a great subplot for Barret in FF7. Majora's Mask is another level though

Nice vid, I see you've chosen to go the video essay route instead of the pure audio content. I think it's working great but you can still work on the global esthetic of your vids.
I'm not a great fan of Dyne, I think he's mostly a tool in Barret character development but I can't deny his impact. Which is remarkable considering his ridiculous screen time.
Very eye opening. I never thought about those two crosses. The one bigger, the one smaller and then the position on the far right that Dyne took before unaliving himself. He had those mounted in memory of his wife and thought-dead daughter... damn. When he found out Marlene was alive he wanted to kill her because he lived so long believing she was dead he didn't know how to live with the idea she was alive. If he knew somehow, perhaps he would have been different. Kinda like Barret. Heck, Barret lost his wife too but at least he had someone to live for in Marlene. Dyne considered everyone that mattered as dead and lived a life of nihilism. So sad how a bitter person can so easily go from sad to malevolent. If only he knew she was still alive before he went down that path... 😢
Really love and appreciate your analysis. I’ve watched all of your videos! You do a wonderful job. Regarding F. Nietzsches quote though, he was actually lamenting. People accidentally see the quote as nihilistic in its nature but that’s because most of us aren’t familiar with the line that comes next. “God is dead and we have killed Him; and we will never have enough water to wash away the blood”.
Friedrich knew that getting rid of God was throwing the baby out with the bath water and was lamenting the inevitable damages that would occur because of our recklessness, arrogance, and flippancy.
Much love from the states!!
Just replayed this part for the millionth time, and I had to take an hour break from the game to disconnect from the depressing story.
Have binge watched a load of your Final Fantasy character analysis videos today. They are so interesting! Keep them coming

Love to see on on Amarant. ;)
Hey have you ever played Octopath Traveler?. Seems like a good option for u.
It looks fantastic. I'm waiting for the price to drop on Steam.
Thanks for this video very interesting story I never play ff7 before but a few weeks ago I start to played because I watch the trailer from smash of sephiroth and convince me to play this classic I only 15 hours that I have played but It became one of my favorite games, the story is great and I love these little characters like Barret Aeris and Tifa, each of them with their story, the game does not depend completely on the Cloud, I really did not expect a suicide from a game of that time.
This got absolutely butchered in Rebirth. What a shame.
Hope they don't drope Dyne from the remake since he is a very relevant part to Barret.
