That dance shuffle he does after Arith dies is the same shuffle he used when he attempts to generate a fortune for cloud when he first meets him in the golden saucer. and my thought was he was attempting to do it again. But obviously failing as Arith has no future. and sadly shuffles away. i don't think it was a disrespectful dance, but man they could have probably made that a lot clearer
Yeah, the character's responding with its defining (albeit bizzare) trait. I see it being unable to tell Aeris's fortune as adding to the tragedy. Cait Sith is kinda poorly rendered as comic relief (when compared to the other vivid characters) and something's lost in translation, but it has a weirdly compelling arc
Agreed, I interpreted it a fortune attempt, since Aerith asked before, and one of his first ones was foreshadowing her death. Trying to do the thing he's supposed to be good for one last time, but it's ultimately pointless and he can't do anything but silently leave the scene in the end. Though yeah, I'm not going to deny that it's not conveyed very well with the sprite and the way his movements are always generally cartoonish.
Fortune telling makes sense, from a storyteller's perspective, maybe it was a reminder of the fortune Cait Sith gave earlier, the 'you will find sephiroth but lose something very dear' thing.
The more you learn about Cait Sith, the less you understand about him - and I think that’s the point. He’s easily the most bizarre member of the party and sort of embodies the more whimsical, but still enigmatic, feel of parts of FF7.
As a kid I always laughed thinking that everytime Cait Sith got hurt in battle, Reeve would have a brain fart and yell like Professor X in the 90's X-men show. All while sitting in a Shinra board meeting.
This is head canon to me now lol Reeve: agh! Scarlet: you alright there? Reeve: yeah, my cat just got pounded by a giant snake.... Scarlet: ......what?! Rufus: i... hate all of you.
There's a scene in Dirge when Reeve is actually talking "to" Cait Sith, they seem to have different outlooks on things, and there's a few scenes on Cid's ship where they look at each other for confirmation after one says something. So yeah, pretty sure the Caits are sentient, that or Reeve is schizophrenic and Cait is a vessel for a completely separate part of his mind.
My guess is the cats are partially programmed robots that Reeve can control, they pick up the slack when he can't have direct control so the doll doesn't become lifeless. The routines that the crushed Cait Sith learnt were lost with his body, which is why there was only one "him".
@@MaximilianonMars Either that or Reeve is using him as a proxy angel/devil to reason with. Like having an argument with himself. Or he's just really lonely and wants to have a friend he can relate to, so he talks to a stuffed animal.
Cait Sith is Reeve's Eudaemon. They have a Persona-esque relationship with one another. It's a bit like the relationship between Dirk Strider and his AI Duplicate in Homestuck. Both up and sprout their own personality over time.
the fact he was remote controlled by someone back at shinra always made me feel that the 'real' team member, the guy who's talking to us and making decisions for cait was some dude sitting in an office back at shinra HQ. I always wanted to meet the guy
the funny joke dance during the death scene is Cait’s animation when he does fortune telling. You even showed examples of him doing the dance with fortune related text box. Imho its actually quite sad, Cait wanted to do a fortune for Aerith to see she is still with the party in the future. If he sees something, he could inform everyone that she can be revived with some way or another (eg phoenix downs, Life spells etc). Cait suddenly stops and looks sheepish as he walks away, because he couldnt do the fortune, pretty much confirming the fact that Aeriths has truely gone.
Special thank you to all of you for being so patient, I know this episode took longer than usual, but hopefully all of the extra work paid off. I have also been working on a very special FFVII project that will change the way we all enjoy the game, so stay tuned!
I thought his behaviour at the death scene wasn't that badly done, tbh. He attempts to do the only thing he knows how - to cheer everyone up with silly dances and fortune telling, before quickly realising he Is well out of his depth and feels totally useless. So he gets overwhelmed and shuffles off.
Hmmm I always thought that was what he does when he reads people's fortunes, maybe he was feeling bad for cloud because of the last fortune he told cloud n aerith at the temple of the ancients
And the death scene, I dont feel it was a joke. It seemed he was attempting to cheer cloud up by telling one last fortune, but realized it isnt worth it. The focus is the Cat. Notice Cait Sith seems discouraged. The moogles exit animation seems to just be the way it walks. As tone deaf as it was
I viewed it as him remembering his first fortune he gave both Cloud and Aerith (and subconciously doing the fortune telling animation) which slows and becomes distorted as he starts to feel responsible as he tries to comprehend what has just happened before just... shuffling away in shame and sadness... What you pursue will be yours, but you will lose something dear.
Hey, Cloud. Heard you needed cheering up. Well, old Cait Sith will make you laugh! Related scene from Futurama: ua-cam.com/video/wblL8mEoEI4/v-deo.html
That was a great video on a character I've long been fascinated by. One thing you didn't mention: the fact he has a zipper on his back often confuses people, but in Japan it's common for plushies to have zippers.
Cait Sith comes with the Manipulate Materia. Not hard to interpret that as the way he was controlling the robots. Maybe it works like a remote control.
Frankly, your theory is as good as any. Headcanon is the only thing that keeps people thinking FFVII makes sense and isn't just a steaming turd full of inconsistencies that we cut slack for solely because of nostalgia.
@@chunkmcbeefnob717 A lot of the inconsistencies seem to originate from the original english translation. There is a fan translation that irons out most (but not all) of them.
@@vogonp4287 This poor game really needs a re-translation. (In its base form. I don't mean the remake.) There are too many parts where I didn't know what the flying fuck was being said because they'd obviously translated incorrectly or just overly literally because they ignored context. And that's without the spelling and grammar errors.
There's something incredibly charming about Cait Sith. I've always enjoyed his touching monologue and redemption arc, followed by him showing up when Cloud is attacking Aeris all "hey guys i'm back! Cait Sith number two here!" It shouldn't work but it's probably one of the funniest moments in the game for me.
The nonsensical information on what Cait Sith is and how he works gives me the feeling that even the developers weren't actually sure what Cait Sith is, lol. Nice work as always!
Suggestions for future episodes: 1.) Jenova as a character. What do we know about "her?" 2.) Jenova vs. Sephiroth. Who is controlling whom? Why is Sephiroth the embodiment of the bad guy and not the "more powerful" Jenova? 3.) Pre-Zack timeline of the FF7 world. In other words, what is the history of the world BEFORE Zack enters the story? Basically, the history of the Ancients through Jenova and the weapons, beginnings of Shinra. 4.) FF7 geography: what do we know about the various geographic locations?
On 2, I'm firmly of the mind that Jenova is controlling Sephiroth but also needs Sephiroth as her avatar/agent in the world. Sephiroth's kept alive for this purpose, and when you defeat Jenova at the end of the game, you then have to face off against a Sephiroth that has Jenova's powers and so much of an impression of her will upon his that the two are almost indistinguishable. Now, a lot of people will prop up Sephiroth as 'in control' due to his 'strong willpower' and will point to a passage from the Ultimania that says Sephiroth gained control or to when, in Northern Crater, Hojo says Sephiroth was having all the pieces of Jenova reconvene at Northern Crater. To address this: 1. Sephiroth's willpower pre-Jenova is never explicitly made out to be strong. In fact, once you get to Nibelheim, it doesn't take him much time at all to snap. 2. Sephiroth DOES gain control--at the very end of the game. When you fight him, stronger than ever. 3. Jenova was keeping Sephiroth alive because she needed his body/mind to send that signal, because, through him, she could express a stronger control signal. Also-also, Hojo's not a great authority to point towards for any facts in the game. This is the man who tried to breed Aeris with Nanaki by putting them both in a sealed room together. From a meta-textual standpoint, it also makes much more sense for Jenova to be the primary antagonist and the one in control. Consider Square's other games around the same time--Chrono Trigger, Parasite Eve, Xenogears--all focused on stories about an alien/parasite that works through agents, usually manipulating people to its own ends. Even within Final Fantasy 7, it makes more narrative sense--part of the huge reveal of the game is that Cloud has been lying about his past. His actual connection to Sephiroth is much less meaningful than we are led to believe. If anyone's really responsible for burning down his town, it's Jenova. Until this reveal, the whole team (and the player) is strung along by false images of Sephiroth. Most players are able to grasp that Cloud isn't who he said he was, but, for some reason, they also don't understand that Sephiroth wasn't the person antagonizing and manipulating the party all along. The game so strongly convinces players of Cloud's narrative and Sephiroth's antagonism that when the big twist comes, most of those players are still convinced. Not me. Jenova's the villain of Final Fantasy 7, and the one in control.
@@varsoonhks3211 Worth adding that the characters themselves, Cloud and company, also can not grasp this in game and that's important to describing Jenova as an almost Cthulhu type of enemy without a face, but present everywhere, eldritch and alien and without ever speaking a word from its own mouth. Sephiroth is humanity's need to put a face to things like that, even when 'Sephiroth' was just the tip of a wiggly tendril. I always, myself, thought it extremely bizarre for Sephiroth to conclude that he could become a god by smashing a meteor into the planet. That sounds much more like a plan to shatter the planet and send parasitic tendrils deeper into the cosmos rather than a plan to 'become god because lifestream.' I know with this Reeve magic its all gonna be a little muddy, but seriously, Sephiroth's plan literally reads like it works out for Jenova, not Sephiroth, if you take the actions they're carrying out and not the words their mouths are flapping.
I think the generally accepted view is that Cait Sith is an A.I. in a robot body. Like JARVIS in Iron Man, he has his own opinions but carries out programmed commands from his creator. Instead of Reeve constantly controlling him like an RC plane, Reeve just gives him generally active commands like: "Help Cloud", "regroup with AVALANCHE", "monitor conversations for *keywords*", etc... and then once in while he can use him directly to "drop-in" like smart speakers such as Alexa can do.
The death scene for Cait was him trying to cheer up Cloud then realizing it was useless and then just gave up, and I think that was just the way the robot walks.
12:04 I feel like his reaction was actually extremely realistic. I’ve been so shocked by death that I spit out unfunny jokes. Sometimes people are so shocked that their first response is to lighten the mood by any means possible. And once reality sets in the cringe is MYTHICAL.
Cait Sith is my favourite character in this game. The first time I saw his face in the party menu, I was hooked. He’s the comic relief, which I respect immensely. The stupid dance during the death scene is both hilarious and sad to me. The Temple scene is my favourite in the game. The limit breaks… hoo boy. I defeated Safer Sephiroth using the slots exploits and it was my last resort. So yes, I’m incredibly biased towards this character and I will never stop talking about how underrated he is.
He never left my team, ever, and the redemption team still affects me when I watch lol... I'm super biased as well, actually my only FF7 tattoo is him lol
Cait Sith is my son. I would kill for him. He didn't leave my party since I got him (and yeah Cloud and Cid had to pick up a lot of his slack, but when he came through he came through. Those full recoveries with Mog Dance... I can't count how many times that saved my sorry ass.)
Come on innnn!!! Tie up yo chocobo, Let the fun begin, so many places to go, Cait Sith is so excited, cuz all his friends invited To go whacky, at Reeve-Reeve playhouse!
You know what? I'm totally okay with "magic" (or "Inspire") being the answer. To me it seems to fit in the FFVII world. You have an immortal pseudo-vampire gunman, a wolf/lion genius, a teenage ninja future empress, a guy that can shoot meteors out of his sword... Seems like it's a perfectly acceptable explanation to be honest. Edit: What if Inspire is Reeve's Stand ability?
I always loved cartoony and off-beat characters in otherwise serious RPGs, and when I was a kid, I used Cait Sith in almost every play through on my main party. Also, I actually did defeat Emerald Weapon using his Game Over Slots Limit Break xD
I’ve played this game a shit ton of times. He’s never been in my party unless it’s the Corel Prison part of the story. I strip him of his materia, and sell any shit I accidentally pick up.
During the death scene, I kinda take it as Reeve breaking down with the rest of the party, causing Cait Sith to spaz out because of the mental link between him and Reeve
Cait Sith's name has never been spoken in full aloud, but in one line in Dirge of Cerberus does have Cid refer to him as "Cait" pronounced like "Kate".
Raven19888 you’re right, its Gaelic and is pronounced something like “Ket Shee” or “Kite Shee”. I love these videos and the content is amazing but it’s painful to hear it butchered. Like back in the day my friends and I used to call Guile closer to Goolie so I let it go :)
For Cait Sith's reaction after Aerith's death...
I feel like TeamFourStar handled Cait Sith’s development and mechanics a lot better in FFVII Machinabridged. While they still don’t go into much detail about how Reeve is able to control him, I think it’s safe to assume that he and Cait are one and the same, with Reeve speaking through the doll telepathically. While TFS Cait does have a touch of goofiness, he also shares Reeve’s neurotic tendencies. Two particular examples are how he gets easily nervous when Tifa starts to suspect that he might be trouble; and how he argues with Yuffie and Vincent during the tower-defense mini game at Ft. Condor, insisting that they manage resources carefully instead just randomly placing soldiers wherever they want. Another trait hinting that Cait really is just a vessel for Reeve is how they share the same memories. When Cloud and Aerith first meet him and ask for their fortunes, Cait Sith keeps giving answers that are completely unrelated to their questions, instead printing messages that sound like something out of Reeve’s diary (getting cheated on during a first date, how to make a birthday cake for one, his guilt if the Sector 7 tragedy, etc). Later on, Cid asks Cait what he imagines as his happy place when he closes his eyes, only for the latter to have PTSD flashbacks while hearing the screams of those who died in Sector 7. Finally, upon returning to Midgar with Cloud and co., Reeve tries to intercept Scarlet’s takeover by using Cait to tap into the TV system and communicate with the whole city. It’s hear that Cait Sith finally drops his Meowth-esque Brooklyn accent to speak to the citizens in Reeve’s normal voice, revealing that he’s just a puppet to hide his master’s identity, while Mog (the moogle he rides) channels out his inner depression and guilt. While TFS Cait Sith is still comedic in his own way, I think that he mainly serves as a way for Reeve to actually have a chance to be himself without being stuck inside a professional environment: someone who’s smart, compassionate, and likes to cheer people up, but has become weary and numb overtime from working with a corrupted corporation like Shinra.
I do actually prefere this interpretation, because it end up telling us that Cait Sith is a Reeve's persona that he created as some form of escapism from the stressfull and guilty work life he is trap in and honest it make them both more interesting characters as a result.
5:56 Hahaha I've never noticed that before, Mike edited the picture of the X-Men poster to have Reeve in the background and me seeing that literally made me burst out Laughing, I don't know why, I think it's maybe because everyone there is more detailed and Reeve is just standing in the background being less detailed or maybe it's funny because we know he doesn't belong there. That's hilarious. How have I never noticed that? Right I'm going to go back through a lot of these Final Fantasy 7 videos and see if I can find anything else I didn't notice before.
I think that dance he does after Aerith's death was just him trying to lighten the mood a little but then Cait Sith realized it wasn't the best of times.
That's just it: you can't really speak Kansai dialect in English, so they made a reference to his Celtic myth origin instead. That's just translators doing their job of conveying the flavour of his accent being exotic somehow. Also he doesn't do "evil Shinra stuff." He infiltrates Cloud's group with the intent of undermining Shinra - the keystone incident is just something he does to maintain that cover. Reeve is constantly shown as a dissenting voice in Shinra. At least, that's how I see it.
But after the party meets the Turks near Gongaga, the characters theorise that they might be being spyed on. It's inferred that the Turks were there due to Cait Sith being a spy. Reeve definitely has better morals than the other Shinra executives but I don't think he INITIALLY joined the party to undermine the company.
I was one of those weirdos who used cait sith alot as the support and caster. Sadly first time I saw that death scene. I wasn't really so happy to see that cheer up animation.
6:21 I think you're looking too deeply into part of a book that would have most likely been changed if it ever got an official English translation. In the Japanese version of Advent Children he probably spoke with a Kansai accent. Usually when Japanese media gets dubbed into English they translate the Kansai accent into a Southern accent because Kansai is considered to be the hick part of Japan, but they probably went with a Scottish accent for the dub because he's based on a creature from Scottish folklore.
I think the reason why Death Joker and Game Over ignore death resistance is because there not actually death effects, or at least there not flagged as such in the game. I think it just sets the HP of the target to zero and the only reason I think this is because I actually got Game Over against Ultimate Weapon when I was hunting him down one play though. First fight I some how manged to not get evil flagged on it and he slunk off to Cosmo Canyon, I did have to fight him there so that means the game reset his hp if it does set it to zero when the attack goes though. Why Ruby would be immune to it is beyond me. But any way great vid, loved that start up of Dio's statue; the look on it's face sums up the first part of the vid very well. Can't wait for the next one.
Hahahaha oh the intro I love it! I never noticed that weird mask thing until you pointed it out one day while I was watching your stream. My life hasn’t been the same since.
I've always said Cait Sith, like 'Kate' (as in the name) and 'sith' or 'siff'. But at the top of the page at 6:30 it says in Japanese ケット.シー (ketto shii) Ket Shee.
In Gaelic it's written Cat Sidhe, but pronounced similarly to "Kat Shee". Localizing one language into another language into another language is always gonna be weird though. Similarly to how Bean Sidhe often just gets written "Banshee" because that's how it's pronounced.
Just a Thought... maybe Cait Sith is a familiar. A stuffed toy brought to life by Reeve summoning some demon to control. Think Salem(TV show) witches/warlocks pets. That would make sense and fill in the plot holes. Inanimate mass produced maybe meant to contain a body jumping demon that controls the robot mog. Just a thought...
Everything going on with Cait Sith forshadows the twist with Cloud. Both are 'clones,' both are pawns being controlled by a higher power, both win by being who they are and asserting their individuality. He is even introduced as a literal fortune teller predicting Cloud's future. The writers knew exactly what they were doing with this great character and I'm amazed no one noticed.
Clould isnt really a clone sepheroth just told him that to try and break him. Yet he does have the Jenova cells and mako infused in him. A clone is technically an identical copy made with the cells and or dna of the clonee. Cloud was already a person so hes basically augmented or a type of mutant.
at the death scene, I believe Cait Sith was trying to do something like conjure up a fortune, something better. That's the dance thing he does when fortune telling at the gold saucer. But the fortune it got, probably, was another bad one. So he just didn't bother handing it over. It was also sort of a way of referencing how his fortune... in a sense... came true, when he gave it to cloud at the gold saucer.
Cait Sith teaches us that the real furries aren't the talking dog-creatures that live for hundreds of years, but instead are Japanese businessmen that moonlight as stuffed mascot characters reading fortunes for people at amusement parks.
in FF14, the cait in there is a familiar. so I believe thats correct that reeve (through magic) created a cat familiar. familiars can be sentient and their own 'person' (like the one in FF14) and so it makes more sense here in 7. considering magic exists and whatnot.
07:30 "This crown is part of Reeve's hobby." This is actually an (honest) translation error. The operating keyword in this sentence is 「趣味」 - shumi - which can indeed mean hobby, but which actually means "taste" or "aesthetic preference" in this particular instance. I guess a more correct translation would read something along these lines: 「リーブが趣味でかぶせたこの王冠、ゲット・シーには欠かせないパーツであるようだ。」 "It would appear this crown which Reeve decided to give him is an indispensable part of Cait Sith." What they mean is that the crown is an artistic touch, if you will, on Reeve's part, but also an indispensable part of Cait Sith.
There's a materia slot on one of the character designs of the crown, theory, Reeve uses experimental materia to copy a version of his personality onto the stuffed animal, the longer it exists the more it becomes it's own person, Cait Sith 3 has its own personality by the time it dies, Cait Sith 4 is new to controlling Mog and what you're seeing is him trying to get Mog to do something outside of it's basic movements, and failing that carefully removing itself from the situation, it's like a child burdened by the knowledge of an adult, it's trying it's hardest, but it's in way over its head.
I think the Scottish accent thing is just an attempt at recreating how Kansai would sound to Japanese people for English viewers so I don't think that's a contradiction. It's weird but it's just a localization thing.
I had Cait Sith and Yuffie in my party during that the city of ancients. And Yuffie was crying so I just assumed he was trying to cheer them up but like. Failed horribly
Nice work man! I'm surprised Cait Sith was such an interesting character. So you have Cloud, Aeris, and Barret left? Barret ought to be your next one. Thanks for making these!
After years of reading FFVII forums and guides, watching the movie and reading the lore in that too, I was exhausted of VII and wasn't interested in it anymore. Heck, X and XIII are more interesting to me. But you have pulled me back in with your video and presented something about VII that is genuinely interesting. Thank you.
Mate, you're a legend. Keep up the great content and brilliant presentation. The Template of the Ancients scene with Cait Sith always blew my mind when I was a kid.
If you didn't run this channel I would never have repurchased ff7 and played through. Currently about to get the highwind for the first time at age 26. God Bless you man
23:14 *Cait Sith:* _"I killed Safer Sephiroth."_ Has the same energy as... *TFS Krillin:* _"I killed Cell."_ Because it's true under a certain condition. For Cait, that condition was getting super lucky with his slots _(or buffering them.)_ And with Krillin, it was blowing up his timeline's unborn infant Cell before it could ever mature.
My head Cannon was always that Reeve has nano machines in a region of his brain that operate at a certain frequency with nanotechnology he inserts into inanimate objects. I always felt he controlled Cait Sith mentally using this method. Cait Sith junctions materia, and in a sense, Reeve is using magic in battles with Cait Sith as a proxy. However, with Reeve giving Cait Sith life.. I feel much like every robotic character trope, he began to developed a sense of self over time... which is why the 1st Cait Sith model that was destroyed in the Temple said what he said b4 dying to secure the Black Materia. I feel the Moogle is completely robotic, and responds to the nano controlled cat.
Got one of these original UFO plush from 1997 and is by far the most expensive and hard to find. I always found that funny as for most people he was the least favourite character
Death, great video, and I prefer to pronounce it "Cait Sith" (or "Cat Smith") because it sounds better, but the Japanese name is "ketto shi", which is a Japanified version of Ket Shee. I'm not looking forward to his Scottish accent in the remake. I think he should keep his character as-is.
The answer lies in the Japanese version of the game Cait Sith's name is written with katakana, which is a fonetic script. So, in Japanese he is called "Ketto Shii". The O in Ketto is due to Japanese pronunciation where you have to have a vowel after each consonant. Therefore we know that the creators of the game intended his name to be pronounced "Ket Shii". Case closed.
The cait sith during aerith death scene i think is very deep actually. What does cait sith do when you first run into him at the gold saucer? He gives you a fortune after a little dance. The same dance he does in front of aeriths body. But this time, there was no fortune. With no fortune this indicates no future for Aerith. She is truly dead. After the failed fortune cait sith leaves with head lowered in shame. A desire to bring forth her fortune to realize there is nothing left for her.
Next week it will be a year since I found and binged all of this kind of FFVII content on your channel. Was great to relive the game without playing it all over again, so thank you so much. I'm glad to see more of this type of video, just like everyone else!
This was very well put together. I always used Cait Sith because I liked his character design. It’s out there, especially compared to the other designs in the game which are actually pretty minimalistic. I always gravitate towards weirder characters.
I think that at the end, Caith Sith is just a remote controlled robot, that "pilot" another robot. The monologue in the temple of the ancient, and the "Caith Sith Sacrifice" is a way for Reeve to atone for his sins and move on as a better person, that fight for what he believe in. The new Caith Sith is pretty much the "new" Reeve, that have a clear mind and will to do what is right. Also the fact that the robo-cat is equipped with the Manipulate Materia when you first meet "him", is a neat hint of the fact that he is just a controlled robot. Is a simple way to see it maybe, but is what I believe the original game hint as the truth. Everything Square-Enix did after that is another story, good old SquareSoft FFVII is what I consider canon. PS: is there any way to play Before Crisis in english?
It would be impossible for Reeve to control Cait Sith all the time. Those were Cait Sith's own words as an independent, sentient robot in the temple of the ancients.
@tom gu It doesn't make sense that Reeve would be talking through Cait Sith 24/7. He is controlling Cait Sith, but Cait Sith does things on his own as well.
You can actually see in Cait Sith's Japanese name that his name is still pronounced, "Ketto-shi;" both in Shin Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy. For comparison, if they were to have pronounced it like Star Wars' Sith side like the new spelling suggests, they would have specifically said, "Ketto-Shisu," as "Shisu" is how they pronounce Star Wars' "Sith." As for Cait Sith's accent in the English version, it's because we can't very well get differences in accents in non-English languages; let alone translate them to an actual English accents. I'm even pretty sure that if we heard a "normal" Japanese person and a person with a Kansai Japanese accent both speaking English, we likely wouldn't know any difference; just that they're obviously both Japanese. The closest we can recognize is just another non-American English-speaking accent we already know. Speaking of Shin Megami Tensei, we can see this in Labrys in Persona 4 Arena. Her Japanese version has her speaking in a Kansai accent, as well, which the English version changes to a Boston accent; because it's how they can at least get the point of a different accent itself across. Ayumu Kasuga from Azumanga Daioh is another example. She's from Osaka, but, obviously, since we can't distinguish an Osaka accent from any other Japanese accent in English, she was given a Brooklyn accent in the localized manga and then later in the localized anime a Southern accent.
Just re-playing through original FF7 here myself and I came across your channel. Haven't played it in at least 15+ years. Can't agree more, it's Cait Sith, the cat is sentient, and his sacrifice scene is the most emotional part of FF7 by far, when I was a kid, it made me cry, when I was an adult now re-playing it, knowing it was coming, it made me cry. Aerith's scene got nothin' outta me, ever.
I'm so so curious to see how Cait sith fights in the remake. Will he still have the moogle? Will he still have luck based limits? Will he still be Scottish? So many important questions
@@qwerty-uy1kh It's obvious he was trying to cheer Cloud up, realized it was poor timing and left.
@TKN V eh, its not as fun just saying that
The more you learn about Cait Sith, the less you understand about him - and I think that’s the point.
Wait a minute... controlling a separate being from a hidden location and introduced in the same chapter as a guy named Dio...
Reeve's a Stand User!
res20stupid Yare Yare Daze
This is head canon to me now lol
Reeve: agh!
Scarlet: you alright there?
Reeve: yeah, my cat just got pounded by a giant snake....
Scarlet: ......what?!
Rufus: i... hate all of you.
In that situation Reeve still wouldn't seem like the craziest person in the room.
Reeve Would still be the Sanest Person in the room though. And I am Okay with that, and I am Not Okay with that.
I like the first, but you make the second option sound interesting.
Wow, never thought about split personality disorder or schizophrenia. Now that's very interesting
the fact he was remote controlled by someone back at shinra always made me feel that the 'real' team member, the guy who's talking to us and making decisions for cait was some dude sitting in an office back at shinra HQ.

This is it
this
The best explanation
EXACTLY! come one it's the same dance...... and he goes out with a "sad" look, even though the graphics didn't allow much
This makes sense.
Special thank you to all of you for being so patient, I know this episode took longer than usual, but hopefully all of the extra work paid off. I have also been working on a very special FFVII project that will change the way we all enjoy the game, so stay tuned!
Thank you Death
Thank you very much Death!
Love these in depth series.
I just got and finished ff7 on switch and have been watching your in depth and guide videos keep it up your awesome
4-8Productions in Britain if a black cat crosses your path it’s bad luck not good luck.
I'm more confused than I was before watching this
lol agree
I thought his behaviour at the death scene wasn't that badly done, tbh. He attempts to do the only thing he knows how - to cheer everyone up with silly dances and fortune telling, before quickly realising he Is well out of his depth and feels totally useless. So he gets overwhelmed and shuffles off.
Totally me
Hmmm I always thought that was what he does when he reads people's fortunes, maybe he was feeling bad for cloud because of the last fortune he told cloud n aerith at the temple of the ancients
That's what I always thought too.
And the death scene, I dont feel it was a joke. It seemed he was attempting to cheer cloud up by telling one last fortune, but realized it isnt worth it. The focus is the Cat. Notice Cait Sith seems discouraged. The moogles exit animation seems to just be the way it walks. As tone deaf as it was
Not yo boy cait sith comin to git evryone ass
That's how I viewed it
I viewed it as him remembering his first fortune he gave both Cloud and Aerith (and subconciously doing the fortune telling animation) which slows and becomes distorted as he starts to feel responsible as he tries to comprehend what has just happened before just... shuffling away in shame and sadness... What you pursue will be yours, but you will lose something dear.

Never knew J.J was a fan of final fantasy! I love your videos.

Maybe the Crown is the Manipulate Materia, just shaped in a different form. Or maybe it’s just the ball on the front spike of the Crown
Thamfur Dithpray technically it was a very flawed game story wise it’s pretty good
@@chunkmcbeefnob717 A lot of the inconsistencies seem to originate from the original english translation.
“So how does Reeve control a stuffed cat?” Because it’s Final Fantasy
Shinra has powerful remote control technology.
This game also has a robot house
This is kind of funny
I mean u can summer fucking monster
Yet cat sith is confusing
We dont need a in depth look at this piece of shit wtf
Wait when Reeve controls Cait Sith, is he doing so from a remote or his consciousness is actually inside Sith?
The nonsensical information on what Cait Sith is and how he works gives me the feeling that even the developers weren't actually sure what Cait Sith is, lol.
Nice work as always!
Welcome to Final Fantasy VII, especially post-Sakaguchi lol.
Suggestions for future episodes:
1.) Jenova as a character. What do we know about "her?"
2.) Jenova vs.
To address this:
7:57 this is where the old proverb comes from: "never underestimate the potential hobbies of a single japanese salaryman"
I personally don't like Cait Sith but I think in the death scene he is trying to actually revive Aeries, and that breaks my heart.
Well Lulu can bring dolls to life sort of maybe Reeve is just like that or something
Since 7 and 10 are in the same universe, it wouldn't be far fetched to say that Reeve could be a descendant of Lulu.

I feel like his reaction was actually extremely realistic. I’ve been so shocked by death that I spit out unfunny jokes. Sometimes people are so shocked that their first response is to lighten the mood by any means possible.
And once reality sets in the cringe is MYTHICAL.
He's comedic relief.

Also, Bugenhagen can fly and none is surprised by that...
@@sefirotsgameit’s theorized that he’s sitting on a ‘float’ materia

Asblomma it would make sense that he’d place the materia in em during its development. 🤔
Independent materia can't be paired with any effect with command materia.
I lost it when called Heidegger “GYA HAAAA HAAA" since he always make that laugh and even President Rufus make fun of his laugh
During the death scene, I kinda take it as Reeve breaking down with the rest of the party, causing Cait Sith to spaz out because of the mental link between him and Reeve

What you pursue will be yours, but you will lose something dear.
So… he’s an office worker’s fursona…
And let’s not forget, “It’s because I fucking hate my job!”
I do actually prefere this interpretation, because it end up telling us that Cait Sith is a Reeve's persona that he created as some form of escapism from the stressfull and guilty work life he is trap in and honest it make them both more interesting characters as a result.
@tom gu Because is very unclear if they are or not the same character in canon

It's okay. ^v^
I wasn't really so happy to see that cheer up animation.
shocked when people dont use Cait!
he was my healer once Aeris died, he's a great healer, or all round
He's a white mage and a gambler all along, the reason why they don't use cait sith is because of his betrayal and his difficult limit break
It's a bummer it just has 2 limits
Final Fantasy Record Keeper agrees with you.
15 playthroughs and I never used him or Yuffie
That first 20 seconds was probably the best intro I've ever seen. 10/10
Hmm...wait..
..Reeve.....REEVE?
Keanu Reeves as Cait Sith in FFVII remake confirmed
Yes!! That is brilliant! =D
Wake the fuck up SOLDIER, we got a Mako reactor to blow up
It would fit.
He even looks like him already. XD
There is something else also, Young Cloud (Kalm Flashback) has his limit break as Dice, but i don't think you can ever legitimately see it
Maybe the crown is like Terra's slave crown from Final Fantasy VI
DID REEVE CREATE PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE?! XD
Isn't that kind of exactly what he said Reeve can do I'm the video..minus it being a demon.
Yeah I really hope in the remakes to come we get some more clarity on how exactly Reeve controls Cait Sith.
That video was great, I missed that video analysis you make. You should do more videos like these. Thank you!
07:30 "This crown is part of Reeve's hobby." This is actually an (honest) translation error.
The operating keyword in this sentence is 「趣味」 - shumi - which can indeed mean hobby, but which actually means "taste" or "aesthetic preference" in this particular instance.
I guess a more correct translation would read something along these lines:
「リーブが趣味でかぶせたこの王冠、ゲット・シーには欠かせないパーツであるようだ。」
"It would appear this crown which Reeve decided to give him is an indispensable part of Cait Sith."
What they mean is that the crown is an artistic touch, if you will, on Reeve's part, but also an indispensable part of Cait Sith.
Just found your channel, still getting through the New Threat mod videos. Anyway keep up the good work
Reeve could have made a normal robot, but sharing a room with Heidegger and Palmer probably wasn't good for his sanity.
Cait Sith is, and will always be, my personal favorite Final Fantasy character
Shit taste bro. Palmer = best.
Super happy to see this type of video here again!
I think the Scottish accent thing is just an attempt at recreating how Kansai would sound to Japanese people for English viewers so I don't think that's a contradiction. It's weird but it's just a localization thing.
I know im not the only one who LOVES cait sith's scottish voice! Its suprisingly PERFECT for him!

*TFS Krillin:* _"I killed Cell."_
Because it's true under a certain condition.
21:31 I KNEW IT! All these years I knew something was up with those slots!
I like how cait sith dissuaded me to not use quina in 9. Cause the second playthrough and used her it was awesome.
Next week it will be a year since I found and binged all of this kind of FFVII content on your channel. Was great to relive the game without playing it all over again, so thank you so much. I'm glad to see more of this type of video, just like everyone else!
You know a character's great when you go 'WHAT!?' every 10 seconds or so even in a video by a guy who's done a decent amount research
This was very well put together. I always used Cait Sith because I liked his character design. It’s out there, especially compared to the other designs in the game which are actually pretty minimalistic. I always gravitate towards weirder characters.
I've used Cait Sith in the majority of my playthroughs of FF7. Great character.
I love these, you should definitely do one for every character. I’ve watched them all so far
A fan remake the game in RPG Maker. Ypu should google it.
For comparison, if they were to have pronounced it like Star Wars' Sith side like the new spelling suggests, they would have specifically said, "Ketto-Shisu," as "Shisu" is how they pronounce Star Wars' "Sith."
As for Cait Sith's accent in the English version, it's because we can't very well get differences in accents in non-English languages; let alone translate them to an actual English accents.
Cait gets alot of slack for being a spy but he's actually one of the most complex characters in the entire franchise.
I lost it when you zoomed in on spiral eyes Reeves head with the game over tune!!
This video was great. I was also confused on how he seemed sentient.
I love what you do keep it up!
I wonder how they will tackle him in the Remake.
Don't know about his name, but his theme sure is catchy, glad to see this video finally up
Less than 2.5 mins in i'm giving you a like simply for maintaining the pronunciation of its name to how I always knew it.
Just found out about and boy you deserve way more credit. Quality content. Subbed
