This is one of those ideas that was clearly far too ahead of its time. The technology wasn't really there to make it work that well in terms of the screen visibility.
What's interesting is that Sony is working on a transparent screen smartphone.

Yes, looks like it. But without a manual, I couldn't figure out how to use them. Had to assume they were Bluetooth, but there is only one button. How do you even charge it?

reminds me of my motorola F3, which is also a phone with similar ideas but its only 30 bucks. This thing is 1000 dollars? Because it has a transparent screen and you can see through the things on the screen? Why?

Translucent screen huh. What good does it do to be the first Mfg to come out with a translucent screen it you can't see anything on the screen? In fact why even have a screen if its useless? Maybe its good in Alaska during that period of darkness. Hope you get service in northern Alaska. Or maybe if you live in a cave, but again theres that service issue. I don't know about the rest of you but I like to be able to see my phone in the daylight, or even in a dimly lit room.

i think they are still working on this product and improving it so you can see clearly the screen but when you turn it off it is transparent..this phone is a MAJOR breakthrough

this phone should have come out in late 90's it would be the greatest thing ever back then.
I think it's cool and fancy when taking it out at nights, but impractical as a general phone usage.
I can't see this be very functional in daily life at all. It's a nice concept, maybe someone can expand on it and make it useable, but I would never invest my time or money in a phone like this.
Reminds me of a similar concept phone, except it was (LG?? can't remember) the opposite side of the spectrum, the transparent slide-out was at the bottom, and it served more as a D pad and the Number keys (I think?)
Both are interesting, just need more innovation and functionality.

Why is everybody saying this phone is pointless.. this is an AWESOME combination of technology and art.. thats why there are people who buys Alfa Romeo instead a BMW, Bang & Olufsen instead of Bose or strawberrys in chocolate instead of a whooper.. those things aim to the soul are the kind of pleasures that take a smile out of you
Its just a monochrome screen without a with background + backlight... That is even possible on my MacBook Air

i just got it , its definitely 2nd phone very light, battery last for 2 days . the price i got it i by was 600 euros.
Very unique phone, good video, i love the originality of the design, though ill probably stick with my Xperia Play =P

you are right but it seems a little bit small. How good if Sony Ericsson combine it with a tasar. After all,both of these 2 things are "electric bricks". A stylish-mobile tasar must be a favourite of rich ladies' collection

Really could have used some type of soft back lighting in order to properly let the rest of us see the display. Honestly I think this phone looks jinky at best. That's the impression that I am getting. It doesn't even look like a solid build. I wonder how long that screen will actually last...

It's cool that the screen is tranparent but it's pretty useless because you can't see anything if i'ts a very bright light in the area you are in AND you can't change the battery...

It fits what I needs actually, I searching it for long time, something different, while not losing the core functions.
I used iPhone for 7 months only before I sold it, and switch back to Nokia 1202 black and white. There are nothing interesting in smartphone, What I want is an impact of soul.

I agree with you that they are probably not going to sell many of those since it is such a weird device, almost unusable. But I guess they thought it would be smart to sell an 'idea' instead of a product. Nonetheless it is still a test of the technology, eventhough it is not the cheapest one.
i have this just last week and its pretty much not a reliable source of a great phone,i mean it is awesome and good for the fact that it is transparent and its comfy looking...but it looks like a low-tech phone...and its pretty much expensive so its not really worth buying,but if you really wanna try something that others doesnt commonly have cuz of its transparent screen and you wanna be different or look cool or maybe you really just like it well then i say you buy one :]] but it is pricy! :]]

The most icredible phone design the world have ever seen, dont compare the price to smart phones but to its beautiful design. Something like a ferrari rather than your minivan. Minivan - practical, multifintional, ferrari/supercar - beautiful.

Really great but only 4 hrs of play time.
There is nothing cutting edge about a see though LCD screen at all. It's only a regular mono LCD screen without the reflective backing, and illuminated from the sides. There have been digital clocks and calculators with see though screens for decades. However this is the first time it's been used in a mobile phone.
It's certainly is a love it or hate it phone though. No doubt someone will buy it. Thing I hate about it, is the iPhone like sealed in battery
try mix that phone with the lg crystal
i love the originality. obviously only people who understands style and technology can appreciate the effort of this phone. and only an idiot who would complain for its "smartness".

Sometimes scientists create this kind of device to analyse its possibilities. Of course, they took the oportunitty to profit over this, since it must have costed a fortune. But if you look ahead in time, maybe this is a prototype for some kind of holographic display. If you make it thicker, it would be possible to project 3d images in it. And with the right kind of crystal it would be even possible to use colors. Just wait and see.
I WOULD BUY THIS PHONE IN A HEART BEAT!!!! if i didnt have a bunch of other sony ericsson options to choose from. Sony makes, BY FAR, the coolest phones ever. hands down. without a doubt. even better than samsung
It's not that expensive bro it includes courier service and instant replacement in case of losing it.. so u pay that for a phone renewal after lets say 9 months for losing it =) and for someone to make ur reservations to clubs and restaurants with the coorporative support of Sony so its like having an all access membership..
That's certainly true this phone is not meant for geeks. It's just meant to be a stylish and exclusive mobile phone. Which looks cool and can make phone calls. The ability to make phone calls, been the single most important purpose of a mobile phone. :)
I would never buy such a device. I'm sure it's going to do very well amongst the fashion concious. The Xperia Pureness is meant to be a fashion phone and nothing more IMO. Geeks always tend to buy smart phones.

An innovation would be practical. This phone is only a clue how stupid a design can be. Looks nice and works worse than an ordinary older phone.
