I took in a feral cat with no external tail. She was pregnant and she had a litter of 3 kittens. One had a tiny kinked tail, one had a medium-length tail, and one had a full-length tail. So between all 4 cats, we had the full spectrum of cat tails.
Some of the dominant genes that cause tail loss are variable. So it looks to me like the queen had it, and passed it to 2/3 of her kittens, and that one with the normal tail didn't get the gene from her at all. There may have even been another embryo in there that wasn't viable because she mated with another manx.
@@Aliandrin The cat was probably just mixed with a Manx. I'd venture to guess she may have been a slight bit larger or had unusual rear legs that were longer. Manx cats only have little nubs, naturally, and kind of have rabbit rear legs as well as being larger. Though, being mixed, this cat may have been small like a normal house cat.
I grew up with a bunch of Manx/Siamese mixed cats. It was funny, some were large like the Manx, while others were slight and lean like a Siamese. All were black from head to toe though.

@@katnerd6712the cats most likely was not descended from Manx cats. Mixed breed cats are far more rare than in dogs, and breeds in cats are not really differentiated well at all. It was a random mutation to begin with. The possibility of it happening is in all cats. You’d be surprised what pops up in feral populations. When I worked at a shelter, I could tell you where most of the incoming trapped cats and kittens were from simply because of traits. I saw the same thing with a litter than came in. The ones with a shorter or no tail just randomly died, where as the longer length surprised. I believe only one with a 1/3 length tail made it to adulthood
Alternatively, the loss of a tail could be a congenital deformity, though that is more likely to come there’s signs like weakness or deceased feeling in the hind, bowel and urinary issues (up to an income lack of certain openings like the urethra dumping into the bowels or just missing entirely

The only thing missing was an explanation of the kind of fruits or nuts available to those who preferred a slow speed and needed a stronger 4-limbed grip strength. That food supply was superior to what the faster but weaker monkey species were getting? Like what? I hope to learn one day.
I appreciate the extra effort you took to film your example ape in its natural habitat, rather than in captivity.

I have an unfused coccyx from my mom's side that I can move ever so slightly by flexing the right muscles. It's incredibly saitsfying when the joints crack, but I can't do it on command no matter how badly I want to. From my dad, I got an extra lumbar vertebra. I'm 5'2" and my ex is 5'7", but we're almost exactly the same height when seated. My back is so long in comparison to my arms that I can't rest my palms flat beside me when I'm seated with my back straight. I got the weirdest, most pointless spine genes, lmao

@Drachenfrau I've never actually thought about them all at once, but I do seem to have a curiously high number of basal features. My dad and I are unusually hirsute, and my mom and I have particularly long canines. I had mine "fixed" when I got braces, but dentists still comment on them. I've always been exceptionally strong compared to my very small size (but that could just be from gymnastics). My mom and I have always joked about our "monkey feet" and how good we are at grasping/manipulating objects with our toes. I have no idea how many of those things, if any, are actually caused by atavistic genes, but it's kind of cool to think about.

I wonder if tail loss could be as simple as "if it's not being used, it's just bones and flesh that can be injured and become a lethal infection"? Appendages are a liability.
I was waiting for some statement as to whether tails were actively selected against, or, on the other hand, whether they were of no use, in which case, as lietz13 said, they become an appendage liable to infection and requiring food energy to maintain. All this video said is that they are apparently not selected against due to the development of bipedalism. But then what was the selective pressure that favored the survival of tail-less individuals?
And it has a caloric demand.
Keep in mind that i am in no way, shape or form a biologist, but i think it might just be because they were just getting weaker and smaller the more our grip strength grew, if we say that the information in this video is true.
If a primate would have more grip strength and mobility it wouldnt need to use its tail thus the tail would become very weak, which the opposite sex might view as some good mating material because the weak tail would indicate a strong individual.
But this doesnt really work with the proposal that the tails were kost from one generation to another. But maybe the loss of the tail was a mutation but these mutated primates grew to be stronger due to not havinf a tale, also leading to them mating more. Or maybe some combination of the two ideas.
Truly nobody knows but it is fun to think about. I dont even think having a tail would be that bad nowadays😂 too bad we lost them so long ago

When I was a kid I always wanted a prehensile tail too. I think I just liked saying the word prehensile. But as an adult and a mother I think they would be really helpful. I'm sure they wouldn't be strong enough to hold a toddler. But they could maybe dangle something like keys to keep a baby entertained while I do other jobs.
Prehensile tails can support a mid sized monkey, so I would expect them to hold a bag of shopping. I too would like a tail please, if only for balance and emoting.

My geriatric microwave has sat in the same place in my house for over 2 decades. Whenever it runs, it inevitably smells of popcorn when you get close. Obviously, my childself would love to sit with my face in front of yhe microwave when it was running, to smell the tasty popcorn.
My parents tried to get me to stop doing this by telling me that I'd grow a tail if I continued. This did NOT work, as I was an animal-loving kid who thought having a tail would be AWESOME.
Needless to say, eventually I stopped sniffing the microwave, and I (unfortunately) have not grown a tail.

I just wanted to say that you're a great role model for young people interested in science, especially those interested in biology. I think that holds true regardless of one's sex, gender, race, religion, and creed. Keep up the great work.
I strongly suspect that if I'd had her channel as an influence on my life as a child, I would have been more dedicated to academia and more inclined to follow my interest in evolution perhaps even to a career related to evolutionary biology. It makes me very happy for any young people with the advantage of having access to her channel.

One problem I see with the "access fruit at the end of branches" idea, is that apes are significantly larger than monkeys. This seems to contradict the idea that they are specialized towards accessing the tips of branches. I am curious about the selection pressures, specifically of orangutans, that caused them to become the largest arboreal animals ever.
but....we've observed gibbons and orangutans, etc doing exactly this. hanging from some large branches to pick fruits and nuts of nearby smaller branches. she even showed a photo of a gibbon doing this multiple times

The length of the intro is probably related to how people nowadays consume content - if the intro is too long, people probably just click off. I've noticed this on a lot of channels, that previously had dedicated intros, - they either stopped doing them entirely, reduced their length or moved them deeper into the video.

They're great for clambering about in trees, but terrible for walking upright on. The way the thumb jointed to the hand would have to change, somewhat. I imagine how they're structured now would make for a raging case of arthritis when we're older if we still had them.
@@SeaScienceFilmLabs Unlikely. It's more likely a slow change from occasional bipedal locomotion of a brachiating ape to fully-terrestrial ape. Going bipedal on the savannah was likely more useful: it allowed us to see over the grasses & watch for predators.

There's a hilarious scene in one of the Hitchhiker's Guide books, where they have finally reached the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and everybody there refers to Arthur Dent as a monkey. And in Buckaroo Banzai the Lectroids use "monkeyboys" as a racial epithet for humans.
Without diving deeper into this topic and just from my logical thinking, the main reason for the loss of the tail must be size.
When a primate becomes big, the tail can no longer function as a 5th limb and looses it's advantage.
Additional reasons are ofc moving away from living on trees as a habitat.

In all seriousness, though, I'd expect the loss of our tales to be related to the biomechanical demands of our ecological niche prior to our role as a dominant species and the impact of our growing size on arboreal lifestyles. The grip strength theory seems plausible to me but I expected this to be well-known already because humans continued to adapt to stretching for outer branches' fruit as we got heavier and likely came to rely on more upright positions in trees (as we became less mobile in them).
As humans transitioned towards being an endurance running predator, the tail could have been a potential source of inefficiencies and diseases. I think this would strengthen the loss of tails and help keep them gone.
Prehensile tails take a bunch of energy and we already need a lot to power our brains as well
in very rare cases, humans can be born with a "tail." the pictures that I saw were very thought-provoking. I wonder if their genome were examined.

Fascinating! Gibbons were always my favorite animal at the zoo because I loved watching how they move. I never realized the other monkeys move on top of the branch, which was why I was drawn to the gibbon.
I wonder if our flexible shoulders were pre-adapted to throwing things.
I suspect an ape found it easier to throw things & the trait may have gotten selected for, because the ability helped them ward off predators & rivals, much like how Chimps currently throw rocks & wave sticks about to threaten rivals. It evolved first as a brachiating morphology, & the ability to throw stuff was discovered by an enterprising ape later. So not really "pre-adapted", but co-opted for other uses.

I wish we'd know if what would happen if (we) tail-less species got back our longer tails!!!! For example:
crispr therapy for families where neural tube defects are familiar and inherited thus a big motivation to UNDO that "tailless, neural tube defect" gene so your kids won't suffer you you have to and/or so you can get kids in the first place. -that's my personal opinion but if you're willing to do to your kids what's done to you, KNOWING what's going to happen you shouldn't get kids. Or adopt them if bad genes are the problem.
The planet is full of orphans, why not get one of them (if you really want a child) instead of giving your illness to the next generation and dooming them or their children to a bad fate? -Also my personal experience. I saw the paper, and wondered if/when Gutsick Gibbon would cover it. I understood the genomics, but appreciate you giving us background that the authors did not address.
What about in Macaques like the vestigial nub tails of Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) and Crested black macaque (Macaca nigra). Or the short tail of the Stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides), is that the same gene(s) at work or something different. Edit: (Should have waited till the end, as you kinda adressed it 😄).

I suffered from Parsonage Turner syndrome that made the left side of me into a monkey - I couldn't brachiate on that side. It took over a year before I could raise my left arm over my head, and it's still painful to do so.
Perhaps I should have grown a tail to help me get by.
I suffered the same symptoms on both sides, each one year apart.
So guess what, I count as a monkey now. But the tail is still missing :-(

Not in a bad way, mind you, it's just making me feel weirdly maudlin.
Y'know, one thing I've noticed a distinct lack of, both in the comments and in the video itself, is that of a _third_ example of tailless or nearly-tailless primates: lemurs. Specifically, the megaladapids and archaeoindrids. I will admit to not knowing much of them besides some wiki-surfing, but these look like a prime example that'd fit well alongside the bushbaby/loris and cercopith/ape pairs.
I'm surprised creationists don't still have tails.
Wow that makes a lot of sense. I used to belve in young Earth creationism. My parents gave me too much intelligence and way too much curiosity and access to the Internet to keep me religious. 😔 I thought I was going to prove people like you wrong. Boy was I wrong 🤷

I read a book called “West of Eden” about a world where dinosaurs never died out. There was a species of human-like creatures that evolved from South American monkeys and yes, many of them did indeed have tails.
I’m with you on the prehensile tail. I’ve wished since I was 13 we had big puffy tails like a skunks that is also prehensile.
We’re in the wrong timeline.
