So, I know I know... I've been doing a lot of higher end, GB only style keyboards lately. So, I wanted to "go back to roots" and grab an accessible, entry level keyboard to mod to greatness. So I grabbed a Gamakay K61 PRO. Did I achieve my goal? I think so? So check it out!

This is another one of those "this keyboard is brighter than my future" moments lol
HAHAHA... yea this definitely is
Man You know how can i charge the keyboard?
below 65% is like torture for me, but the features of this keyboard especially after modding is 🤯
I really really enjoy the scientific and output-based approach you do in each of them!
GET THIS GUY TO 1M SUBS ALREADY!!
Hahaha thanks! I hope one day!
I think there is a 65 version somewhere
@@ryantran4315 Nope
Gas68 iirc is similar and gasket mounted
Idk, the Corne v3 is just too good and functional to convince me of a sorta 40%. It does all the shortcuts/hotkeys I have are already gonna be better on the Corne by a mile
By far the best before and after modding of a prebuilt keyboard I’ve seen in a hot minute. Very well done!
I’m so new to this that I’ve never even modding anything yet and this video is so helpful for a newb like me. Thanks so much!!
Those modifiers sound amazing, using the BCPs for that was a great idea
:) BCPs sound so good in mods for sure! I have a big bag of them that I use for multiple keyboards :)
Hi, what does BCP stand for?
Happy to know they're quiet switches, even though not silent. I consider myself fairly normal in that I don't wanna bother others with endless clacking lol.
Great video Scott. I do have some feedback though. I think it would be really good to hear the modified board with the original keycaps and switches, as most people who buy prebuilt keyboards won't be changing those components. Of course, it's always nice to hear the how good the board can sound, but I think it would be a nice addition to have some middle ground between stock and completely modified. Just a thought.
+1 for this idea!
🤞
Imagine if they made a barebones version. Will be a really popular budget kit
CIY is the brand behind Tester68s, or vice versa. They make good budget products and have been around for a while. They've had a few options on DROP as well. Good stuff. Like, technically good stuff with anti-ghosting and NKRO. Silencing options for coders in cramped offices or cafes, gamers that don't live alone. Def a mainstay that "enthusiasts" are newer to.
The gas 67 is dang good too
Same goes to the tester84
@@kayoriskeyboards Right? And the x77 is a pretty good tkl as well
@@akitsuki1149 I've seen that keyboard b4 but I've never gotten my hands on it, only the Tester68, 84 & gas67
Not a real well known brand, but they are doing things right. They also make their own red switches which are a step above normal reds once lubed and filmed. Their X79 (65%) is one of my fav boards.
This keyboard are a budget for sure! I also recommend some more budget boards, like the Jamesdonkey A3, the Epomaker 680, the Fantech Origins A60!
Thanks for the suggestions!
Someone: "hand me the flashlight"
Keybored: *hands k61 pro*
I know! It's so bright!
Will definitely consider to purchase for one of my best friend’s bdays. He’s never had a modded keyboard let alone a custom - looking forward to building with him. Thanks for the recommendations Scott.
You're very welcome! It's a good board to mod!
nice b-day gift idea, thank you :D
Anyone else think this board is eerily similar to the akko acr series? Almost like it's from the same factory lol. I mean the case, pcb, foams, gasket mount system and even the feet are really close. With that being said I'm still glad to see the budget side of keebs getting some of the features of the higher end board.
You should review the gas67, I’d love to see how you’d improve it.
CIY are the guys behind the Tester68/Tes68 which is a 15-30 USD kit, seems ike they are not that popular over the Western market.
You can get it via Aliexpress afaik, would love to see you do some crazy mod on it since its so cheap that it doesnt matter if it breaks lol
Haha, that might be a fun project!
CIY is the brand behind the Tester68, Gas67 etc... Gas67 blew up in the budget community and was super comparable with the KBD67 Lite.
Please do a review for the CIY Gas67!! It’s a very good budget gasket mounted kit!
of course a gamer rgb keyboard video is 13:37 long 😂 this board is crazy for the money! love the vid scott:)
Hahaha, it was just a coincidence!
The video is 13:37 long and is about Gaming… Coincidence? :p
Hahaha, I didn't even realize that!
Haha, I wanted to comment that too! I thought for sure it had to be intentional.
This is the first place where I find the differences between the K61 and the K61 Pro, thanks :)
wall decoration go brr fwosh fwosh
This thing just change the whole gaming keyboard market, and with the sound and feature is just 🤯
Love the new background, hope you’ll hit 1 m subs soon!
Thank you so much! I hope I can break 100K soon!
@@Keybored And that as well:)
I’ve learned that waiting pays off in the end, I bought the K87 for £44 and that’s including shipping.
When I saw :3ildcat's video with the crystal switches, I instantly thought that North Poles would be a great upgrade for this. Glad you had the same thought as me.
Hands down best keyboard content on the plattform! 😄
CIY is the company behind the tester 68 78 and more!
I value, value. Also your Keybored mods are always pretty goated ngl
the board is a rainbow ninja assassin but you're the community's genius scientist lmao. You can make anything sound good xD
Haha, Thank you Calvin! But something like the Loki doesn't need modding to sound good :)
6:34 that sums it up nicely!
:)
was looking for this comment 😂😂 “from a material sense it has a æual œhæl”
I personally think even the bottom of the barrel keyboard will sound good with enough persistence and modding. I put cotton and 9 layers of masking tape on my board and lubed my *brown* switches with some MP3 lithium grease and it sounds pretty damn close to a tofu65.
I picked up the k66 earlier this week and modded it out, glorious pandas and Mistel dbs PBT keycaps from Amazon. Absolutely love it besides it being very loud lol
I bought the K66. It actually sounds good after a few simple mods
Glad you come back to this kind of keyboard!! If you have the opportunity to check the varmilio minilo (first hotswap)$119 board
Will take a look!
@@Keybored thanks!! And actually I got my firts diy keyboard(tofu65) just the other day, just because I want to try out your mods!!! And I got in to the jiris65 group buy! Your review was one that tip the balance to get it!! Thanks for everything!!
May I get an advice on modding Akko ACR 75 Pro? I want those 'clacky' to 'marbly' sounding
This acrylic build really change my perspective on modding my board
Looking at the structure, I believe the ACR 75 PRO is similarly built to the K61 PRO!
Omg that black cherry pie
Definitely sounds good!
gk killing it again
Ciy is i believe a chinese brand. Have budget boards, mot famous for the ciy tester 68. Infamous for being 28 dollars from aliexpress i believe, and despite the low price has a lot of nice quality add ons.
That's good to hear!
The CIY GAS67 is also a great, especially for 60 bucks on drop.
@@Keybored yeah still surprised to see their hot swap on a board. Didnt event know they made them
@@weneed69 i think you can get that for cheaper on chinese sites, bit long shipping and stuff so
Brooooo how have you not reached 1 mill alreadyyyy
I don't know :(
i really love the space, what that is? Black cherry pie isn't?
Wait... was the "rgb all the way" a reference to the "double rainbow all the way"-guy? 😂
How r u not at 1 mil subs yet!!!!!
I have to break the 100K first! I hope soon!
This look a lot like a 60% version of AKKO's ACR Pro series, even down to the crystal switches.
I can't choose between the two. ))) Akko looks more solid. but 2.4 here (
Reminds me of the epomaker gk87 keyboard vid from a while ago. I followed that guide to make my first decent keyboard
:) That was a good board to mod. Some of these boards are ok stock, but much better after modding!
Rgb galore hahaha. But looks great and not bad stock, even better modded. Would like to have seen the other rgb modes. Curious how it would look like with those smoked clear keycaps. But overall looks like a great budget board with great connectivity options. Looking forward to seeing more budget options like this
man this actually forces my to buy a cheap keeb and mod it somewhat like this just for the sake of doing it lol :D
as always, brilliant job, it sounds amazing
Thank you so much! I'm happy with how this turned out! the sound difference is like night and day
You have appeased us rainbow assassins with this video :)
Haha, Thank you so much! I heard you have quite the Drop Carina RGB Monster
@@Keybored Lol. It’s my first born RGB baby monster. Thanks a lot! Keep up with these videos!!🫵👍
I feel like you should've implemented a funny comment what this board is like. Something like _Silent Rainbow Assassine_ comes to my mind.
🙃
You need to brand "Silent Rainbow Assassin" if it's not already. 🤣But really, I'm all for keyboards that autodetect Mac/Win. Having to work with both operation systems, that would be nice to have. 😉 Thanks for the video!
The Phoenix switches are a good tactile and sound very poppy when lubed. (Do with that information as you wish)
simillar with this: ua-cam.com/video/f4WW8B_0yc0/v-deo.html ??
quiet? ))
If you have this one, would you please, to check is it possible to reassign ins, delete.... on another keys with combination?
And also assign instead of ?
@@somaticHuman i don’t have this keyboard but i have the switches thats it
Just got this on phoenix. Switches pretty nice in a keyboard. Very light and very silent.
love this build! Did you have to cut out sections of the tape mode for the underglow-rgb across the entire PCB?
The thing is, getting a few of this keyboards to fill up the wall is actually cheaper than getting the equivalent in Nanoleaf.
Hahaha, that is a true statement
Best keyboard vids. No bs
Thank you so much!
I just need something above 60 percent but tbh this looks good for my friend who loves RGB
please do a video on the keychron q8 and mod it :))
Nice video Scott! I'm curious if you have any plans on reviewing keyboards from "Vortex"? (KBt: RE 68 and KBt: RE 66)
Nice video! Would be interested to see you review the epomaker th66 (not 68) as it also close to the price range of the gamakay. The akko acr PRO 75 would also be a fun video and can teach us on how to mod it!
Yeah! Would also love to see this!
I did have a chance to check out the ACR series I believe! It was a good board
Dayyym! Sounds great but, how much was the switch upgrade? The price of mods should ideally stay within a certain percent of the price of the keyboard
Holy crap Scott i am definitely getting that board over the normal k61
It's definitely a better option Vs. the K61 standard
it can be a problem if you are using Ctrl, Shift, Alt in combination with arrows for working with text.
Keybored I know this is out of pocket but do you have any discord that can help with broken hotswap sockets… Or possibly you can?? Please let me know love the videos as always!
Damn, that sounds better than the KBD tiger
Crazy idea, but do you think the wooting he 60 would be compatible with this plate? Gasket mount wooting anyone? 🙈
It is a challenging to mod a budget keyboard but it is reallt worth it.
:) It was pretty easy actually
Nice Job
The intro 😂
What's that light that you have over there? I kinda dig it.
The govee glides!
2 videos in a week yay
I know... I'm going to really try to push as much content out as possible to help get the channel to break the 100K mark!
Hi! How are you? Which one is the best option of smooth/silent/quiet switch for this keyboard? Thanks!
Letras goo been waiting for new vid
Hope it doesn't disappoint!
I was too happy watching the vid didn’t even realize let’s go was auto corrected by my phone to letras go lol
CIY? Do I smell a tester68 vid coming soon? 👀
Haha, I haven't had a chance to check out the tester68 yet
I relly want the Jris but im too broke lmao so this is my next option
I feel like ttc frozen is the true 'silent rainbow assasin' switch choice
:) Will have to check out the TTC Frozen
@@Keybored The dampeners are less mushy than normal silent switches. Fit on most caps is very tight.
Do you have a preference for the type of film you use for your switches or are they all rather equal?
Biggest issue for me is the visible switches but some people like the low profile look. Different strokes.
mine started double cliking so i changed switches to mx browns from my old logitech keyboard and its fine i guess thicker legs have better connection with pcb
wonder how it sounds with silent switches 👀
Hey man
Can you do a video on the feker ok 75 pro?
whats that rgb led light on the rocky wall called?
I'd like to see the Fantech Maxfit61 Frost with the Fantech ALKM61 Aluminum case, it's a $60 prebuilt keyboard, with an option to purchase the $60 aluminum case upgrade. based on the pictures, kinda looks like a budget tofu60. I doubt you can o-ring mount it tho, bcs of no daughter board.
Try the ciy gas 67
Hey scott, i was wondering if durock v2 or stabeies stabs are compapitble in this board? Because im afraid it will interfere and would not fit into plate.
Hi, isn't the Gamakay Phoenix switch quieter than the Crystal switch? Or which switch is the quietest?
phoenix is their most quiet switch among the 3, (crystal, bumblebee)
wow the rgb is actually hurting my eyes even though i have my screen lightning down and im in a well lit room :O i wonder if this pc board will be able to replicate the iconic rizzo7's drop carina build though...
Hmmm I'll have to check that out!
could you take a look at the switches from rebult keyboards? they felt pretty good on my hands, and it would be nice to see a review of the harimau and penyu switches on this channel
Do you know who the manufacturer is for Those?
@@Keybored IIRC, they should be manufactured by jwk
I wonder how may mods you could fit at the same time
Try out the CIY tester68 its a $20 board that is only bt and wireless .
I'm glad this isn't the same stacked acrylic. That idea seems cool but honestly comes off as trashy imo
Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of stacked acrylic myself
After modding it sounds great but a little thin. Many plastic housing keyboard like this one or gas67 sounds sounds thin. Do you know how to fix it?
how can we access the driver wirelessly???
Why didnt you use transparent tape for the tape mod/stab hole tape. The lost potential for RGB! :(
How can i charge the keyboard
What i want to see, is if you can make like a dirt cheap keyboard sound good. under $20 keyboard
That would be a challenge for sure!
@@Keybored I have always wondered how much heavy moding can do to a cheap board.
@@PeterTruely haha eventually, it ends up becoming something different all together
is there an fn lock for this keyboard
Nice length 🙂
Thanks!
“We’re gonna tear this baby down and mod it”
…
Haha yup
Get your hands on a Wooting 60HE (I bet they send you one for free) and mod it if you want to find out for real. I don't know what makes a Gamakay board a Gaming Keyboard.
They did reach out before, but I didn't have the time to take a look :(
@@Keybored You should it's worth it. The switches are special.
You should checkout the CIY GAS67
Haha someone actually suggested that as well
Yooo
You're First!
why does the rgb look kinda good though
This RGB actually looks pretty good. It has a very rich color lol
@@Keybored yep
The keyboard is rubbish, because the most popular keys near the arrows in FN layer are considered system keys for managing colors. :) Ctrl, Shift, Alt - system keys )))) . So you can't use Ctrl + Arrows for jumping by words. You can't use Shift + Arrows for words selection. You can't remap nearest with arrows keys for most usefull keys like Ins, Home, PgUp, PgDown. You can't use most popular combination in the games like F1-F12 + Alt\Shift.
So can't use this keyboard to perform basic operations for working with text. You can't normal play with this board, but, you can change colors..... )
The keyboard also came with a defect. Charging does not work. Essentially a wired one.
Second?
Second! Congrats!
