    It’s a fun place to visit , and very convenient to get to off the interstate. Other than the fences there’s not a lot left of the fort, just outlines of where the buildings used to be. I wish they would reconstruct a few buildings.It’s still very interesting. What I think is more interesting, is the nearby trail and monument for the Fetterman battle site. Just a very short drive from Phil Kearny.

      Thanks for watching the video. I agree with you, the fort and Fetterman battle site are interesting places to visit. I too would like to see some reconstructed featurres. Several years back I asked why no buildings? I was told no money. If you have a chance, watch my Fetterman battle and the Wagon Box Fight videos.

    I've been to the fort on 2 occasions and have read about it's building and life , It's interesting to note that the fort's band were the only one equipped with non muzzle loading firearms at the beginning. Some of these firearms were given out to members of the cavalry unit that went out with Captain Fetterman.

      The events around Fort Phil Kearny I think are some of the most interesting in the history of the warfare between the Indians and the US Army. I was always interested in this fort when I first read about it back in the 1960s. By the way having the east side of the Big Horn Mountains is some of the most beautiful in Wyoming. I also found it interesting that the band was the unit that was given the non-muzzle Loading fire arms. I have yet to find out a reason for this.

      @@WyomingTraveler Were there not Spencers in use by Fetterman?

    • @WyomingTraveler
      @WyomingTraveler  Рік тому +1

      @@Jay_Hall only the 20 odd cavalrymen had Spencers, the infantrymen had single shot muzzle loaders. The most effective arms were the two 17 shot Henry rifles used by the two civilians. The troops had no cover and were just overwhelmed by the number of Warriors attacking them

    Dear: Wyoming Traveler, Nice job on Fort Phil Kearny video 📸💭. Due to your length,10-15mins/videos, content/Facts, I would rec, more/detail of the Natives Assoc. Say the (Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapahoe) allied. Highlight Loc. Why of Fort. When the Expedition to site started, Spring of 1865. Fetterman Massacre was in Late Dec 1865, and the other skirmishies, in 1866. Est reason for the Turmoil w

    I apologize if I'm being analytical, I don't mean too. WYO, Robert, 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸👀👀👍👍👍👍 Keep it up there Dude!! "Fine Job"
    PS. I've been across BH Mtns many times, 2 👀👀site over? IT still haunts me. Have yet to see Ft CF Smith, & Ft Reno Loc. Maybe this Yr.?
    "Update" Too comments 2 hrs earlier: Too Wyoming Traveler please graciously accept my apology? In my previous comments I made the mistake of misquoting the date Col. Carrington, & Expedition began. I said "1865" I was WRONG it began in 1866. Therefore my timeline of events is Wrong. NOT The Wyoming Traveler. OH FYI, an excellent read in paperback is," Indian Fights and Fighters ", publish date 1920s ❓❓
    Author: C S Brady. Last copy I had was from the Information Center, Book Store at Fort Phil Kearny, National. Historic Site.
    This book detailed many Indian War, conflicts before! and following

      Dear Robert, thank you for your kind words and helpful critique. When producing my videos I have these goals in mind. One introduced the site, to tell the viewer some of the history of the area and why the side is significant, last give the viewer a a walk-through of the area so they can see what there is there today. Often the issue I face, is how much detail to go into. Since many UA-cam viewers don’t want to watch long videos, I think the 10 to 15 minute sometimes longer video is the best model. Therefore I have to limit my details. I do understand your point. What you are giving me is ideas for future videos, thanks. since you have not been to forts CF Smith or Reno I suggest you view my video lost and forgotten Ford’s part three. There is not much to see at either of these forts and the video will give you the opportunity to decide if it’s worth the time to go and see them. Again thanks for your comments and your support.

    Thanks for the video. I didn’t realize that the fort was that big. You mention videos about the two fights linked to the fort… Are they out yet? Will the Fetterman fight mention the ride of Portuguese Philip? That ride was quite a feat!

      I appreciate your kind comments and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, there are two videos about the battles around Fort Phil Kearney, they are posted. One, of course is the Fetterman fight and I comment about Portuguese Phillip. The other battle is the wagon box fight. If you go to my homepage, you will see my videos posted. I have videos about most of the forts in Wyoming and many of the Indian battles. If you’re interested in the American frontier history, I think you will enjoy the videos. Thanks again for watching.

    So, who built it….the regular troops? Or a detachment of engineers?

    • @WyomingTraveler
      @WyomingTraveler  2 роки тому

      The troops built the fort themselves. This was the case for most of the forts on the frontier. Check out my video forts on the western frontier. At Fort Phil Kearney, machinery for two sawmills was brought along and used to cut planks to construct the buildings. There were civilian employees, much like civil service employees in the military today. They were hired as Teamsters, wood cutters, carpenters, blacksmiths and so forth.

      Carrington was the brains of the building operations according to the book Red Cloud The Heart of Everything That Is. The authors most likely retrieved that information from the 1962 book entitled Fort Phil Kearney by Dee Brown. The enlisted men under Carrington and some civilan crews who were stationed there built it.

    I heard they thought they had cannons in the fort that’s why the Indians wouldnt attacked because they were terrified of those cannons

    • @WyomingTraveler
      @WyomingTraveler  Місяць тому

      The fort did have cannons and the Indians were aware of them, but that is not why the Indian did not attack. The Indians Concept of war did not have sustained continuous military campaign. It’s more what you might call hit and run warfare. They had just won a great battle and wanted to return to their camp to care for their injured, more than their dad and celebrate their great victory.
