    I had read years ago that Red Cloud commented after these fights that he had lost many of the best of his warriors and began to loss heart in the fight against encroachment. The fire power those rifles represented in the hands of men who knew how to use them along with plenty of ammo was something that was tough to deal with. Confederate calvary had the same problem at the end of the Civil War.

      That information could be accurate. The Spencer rifles were deadly. If Fetterman had the guns, his battle would probably been different.

    The Indians called the new rolling block rifles (Remington M1867 I do believe) the "talk a lot gun."

      I thought the troops had been issued with the new 1866 Springfield-Allin conversion rifles.....Nelson Story had brought his cowboys through earlier in 1866 however and they had Remington Rolling Block rifles.

    Red Cloud, after driving the soldiers out and burning the forts was smart enough to see the future made peace and received a substantial reservation. It is unfortunate that there was this clash of cultures resulting so much death and misery.

      Yes, Red cloud was clever enough to make peace after winning. It is unfortunate that the cultures clashed but that unfortunately is the way of history.

      Also in the insueing Year's he was invited too Washington, along with several other important Chief's.
      While on this visit? He realized the Fact's of what His people would face, in any upcoming Conflicts, with the Dreaded Whites. He was a very Wise n Intelligent Advisary, who like Sitting Bull, was very Highly thought of. Both were Principal Chief's, among Thier People. But this was only granted with in the Social n Administration, council's of the Tribe's. A very rudimentary, or less Funtioning form of Democracy, than our Very Own. FYI, the Women's Say or Vote, in Council!! Was also very Highly regarded & taken into
      Consideration whenever the welfare of the Tribe or Clan (Family group) was being determined. Thank You so much for the opportunity too comment. Wyoming, Robert,🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸👀👀🤔🤔💭💭🙂🙂🙏🙏

      It is unfortunate, but the true losers of this particular clash was the Crow tribe. By treaty Ft Phil Kearny and Ft CF Smith were within Crow territory. After the war this became unceded Indian Territory with a different set of rules.
      If not for this conflict modern day Sheridan and Buffalo might be part of the Crow Reservation.
      If interested in Western History I would suggest reading up on the Pryor Creek Battle.

      Hi, Robert, I am glad to see you back and happy you enjoyed the video. Filming at the site of the wagon box fight was easy since it is a state park. Other Indian battle sites are difficult to locate as I stated in my video on finding Indian battles. I am happy to have you as a regular viewer and as long as you’re watching I will be making more videos. I just got back from a five day trip to New Mexico and Colorado collecting material. One has already been posted and another is on its way.

      By all means, had the troopers been armed with the musket rifles that Fettermen's had, they would have been wiped out also. The Indians had planed heir strategy on the soldiers using the old guns.

    • @WyomingTraveler
      @WyomingTraveler  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for watching the video and for your comment, the wagon box is just there to give the visitor a view of what the wagon boxes or like. I am sure that a 1866, No one expected this to be a historical site. It is, however, interesting to be at the actual site and picturing what it may have been for the people, on both sides, who were fighting there.

    wonderful that you would make a video, explaining how the white man was attacked, even though it was the white man attacking the Indians. grow up and go and learn that manifest destiny is not a real thing.

    VERY disappointing! Your background music track and sound effects obscures your narration. Your content is less than detailed without casualty figures for both sides. An observation I've made is how the presence of artillery always ended any further actions by the Indians. A fact the cavalry leaders either failed to pick up on or refused to admit.

    • @WyomingTraveler
      @WyomingTraveler  Рік тому +1

      Sorry you were disappointed, I have stopped using background music as several views said the music interefered with the narration. Thanks for the feedbacck. In several Indian battles artillery was used: Battle of the Platt River Bridge, Rush Creek and Mud Springs for example. The encampments at Hayfield and the Wagon Box did not have artillery with them.
