"Here, I'll read it because you're incapable of promoting your own work." LOL. What a pleasure to listen to this interview and feel the sincere warmth these two men generate. This is both thoughtful and a welcome reprieve from the sound-biteyness of modern media. Conceptual thinking lives!
We all know Ayoade’s self-deprecating demeanor is his public image, so I would love to see behind the scenes footage of him directing, because in that situation he would have to be decisive and confident.
I find so much satisfaction in listening to this conversation between intellectual, deep philosophical thinkers who are also very comedically gifted. It is so rich and interesting. I feel like my mind and soul are both being fed. There’s so much to love about this video and these two men in particular.
Couldn't agree more. This has taught me something new about the art we actually view as great and why it is we are able to connect with things that are not essentially great.
Beautifully put. And an exquisite combination, both the intellectual deep philosophical thinking and humour, and of course these two equally exquisite chaps. Love them.
There’s a famous Monty Python interview where they say British humor is about the underdog/“loser” type character and is more “grounded” and American comedy is more about the “winner”/smart-aleck/leader type. And Richard’s taste in comedy is reinforcing that for me
My opinion on Russell has quite changed a lot now, because of this and how Richard is with him. The kindness and honesty between the two is pure stuff. And so down to earth compared to ten years ago. There has been, so much that they have both been through. Which has brought them both more gravity in what they are now. And more grounded to the world they live in. And understanding.
great pairing. ayoade can bring someone down to earth in 2 words. something russell can use. it's like a guru meets a daoist. if these 2 had a podcast interviewing people it would be one of the best podcasts going.
Richard is brilliant, I love watching him, listening to him, those flashing eyes, beautiful smile, yes he can be quite cutting, esp in Travel Man (no more however😞), Travel Man just won't be the same without him. I only watched the show because Richard was the host. Best of luck for 2020 Richard.
This is Richard’s way of saying that he loves and understands human frailty. People aspire, and sometimes we just fall flat. To understand the whys and hows of vulnerable things gives birth to compassion.
This man is suspiciously hilarious, he made "submarine" and I didnt know that he made one of my tween life changing movies until after I became a fan of him in general. Brilliant dude.
Honestly I feel it's a bit annoying because when he is on shows a lot of times he also is playing that type. He's genuinely interesting when he's himself like this.
Interesting, as an American that came off quite evidently to me. The travel man character reminds me a lot from the character he plays in the American movie, The Watch. It's normally more difficult for me to interpret English people so I'm surprised by this.
I don't always agree with Russell Brand, but I virtually always enjoy his use of language. It's pretty and handsome English. Listening to him is fun and provocative..
What a lovely heart-warming faith restoring conversation. This is the most relaxed I've ever seen Richard on screen and confirms many things I suspected about his approach and reasoning about what he does. Thank you Russell!
Richard needs to see all these comments and see how much of an impact he has on people! Honestly, he is such a sweetheart and he needs to understand and realise how much hes appreciated!!!
Richard Ayoade is a goddamned comedic genius. You're too damn humble. You have had me laugh to tears on innumerable occasions. I have a Garth Meranghi poster FFS!
This is a fascinating talk, I usually can't watch/focus on interviews or talks but this really interested me despite not understanding all the references. The calmness and intelligence displayed by both was incredibly comforting as was the mutual respect they show each other.
Richard Ayoade, Russell Brand and Noel Fielding are 3 of my most favorite people. They’re all very entertaining, intelligent and funny. I can’t get enough of them. Richard doesn’t give himself enough credit. He’s so talented. I love them.
Seeing a master in a particular field failing or being humbled makes us feel closer to them. It makes those untouchable “celebrities” feel more personal and approachable.
Richard has the endearing quality of being himself and still a character appealing to many. Comedians who endure have built their own shtick but one’s that build a falseness around it don’t endure. Richard firstly appealed to me as Moss, he was actually directed to be himself as a character. That is actually a very respectable and maybe vulnerable quality. Bucket list for me is to meet Richard and thank him for being him
"aiming for greatness is quite silly you should be interested in what you're doing and who knows what it's going to be" "It's also people not being ok with their limitations and not realizing that there's a space here that can also be occupied and it's fine"
The part where Richard completely disregards his history of entertaining us, really breaks my heart. Moss and Roy were my college heroes. Someone give that man a hug and tell him he deserves some recognition. Great conversation with Mr. Brand!
knowing that you are not okay at a lot of things and not worrying about it while simultaneously embracing it and using it as fodder for creativity, takes a great amount of self assuredness. eg, someone can laugh at all their failings and faults because they know they don't define or indicate value
I clicked like without even watching. I know I'm gonna like this combo. I'm anxious that once I listen it I can never hear it for the first time again. I might be obsessed with them.

"Here, I'll read it because you're incapable of promoting your own work." LOL. What a pleasure to listen to this interview and feel the sincere warmth these two men generate. This is both thoughtful and a welcome reprieve from the sound-biteyness of modern media. Conceptual thinking lives!
It’s wonderful to see these two men simply be themselves and have a genuine, intelligent conversation. They both seem happy and healthy.
We all know Ayoade’s self-deprecating demeanor is his public image, so I would love to see behind the scenes footage of him directing, because in that situation he would have to be decisive and confident.
So pleasant to listen to two intelligent humans NOT yelling at each other.
i love everything Richard Ayoade does, perhaps we need more awkward intellectuals in the world.
i completely agree with this!
Nathan Brock There are plenty of them in world, they just get beaten down into quiet submission in puberty.
And fewer reactive dickheads who get angry when people use the English language with skill and wit...because they cannot.
Yes! Well said.
I just feel a bit thick 😂
Beautifully put. And an exquisite combination, both the intellectual deep philosophical thinking and humour, and of course these two equally exquisite chaps. Love them.
You've never noticed that Russell is a moron? How?
There’s a famous Monty Python interview where they say British humor is about the underdog/“loser” type character and is more “grounded” and American comedy is more about the “winner”/smart-aleck/leader type. And Richard’s taste in comedy is reinforcing that for me
I think that was Stephen fry, or at least he has said the same thing
My opinion on Russell has quite changed a lot now, because of this and how Richard is with him. The kindness and honesty between the two is pure stuff. And so down to earth compared to ten years ago. There has been, so much that they have both been through. Which has brought them both more gravity in what they are now. And more grounded to the world they live in. And understanding.
I've only recently seen Richard on the internet. I've fallen hard for this man! I absolutely love him
Love everything Richard does, wish he'd make more films tho. He is a really talented director.
Submarine is a masterpiece
Masterpiece naa, v.good though
Joseph Haynes - That’s a matter of perspective. It is a masterpiece to the other commenter. It’s okay if it’s not for you.

I feel like I've increased my vocabulary at the end of each episode and it's immensely satisfying
Unduly indispensable even :)
Ayoade is Richly entertaining and brilliant. Much love
What a mind treat.
Richard's humbling disposition makes him the great man he thinks not.
Whoa. I have never seen Russel so chilled out. I shall name it... The Ayoade Effect.
I love that phrase "we are not responsible for how we are received"
great pairing. ayoade can bring someone down to earth in 2 words. something russell can use. it's like a guru meets a daoist. if these 2 had a podcast interviewing people it would be one of the best podcasts going.
I'd be slightly anxious going into an interview with these two
Yup -- Ayoade makes Russell more relatable. Perhaps Russell should speak to Ayoade prior to each interview :)
Couldn't agree more. I really like Russell, but he definitely needs someone like Richard to balance him out a bit.
Add fry and prof cox and regular blow ins..
What a lovely genuine chat with no pretense whatsoever.
This man is suspiciously hilarious, he made "submarine" and I didnt know that he made one of my tween life changing movies until after I became a fan of him in general. Brilliant dude.
"Don't thank me, I've done nothing for you."
@oMFg Wonder haha, glad you remembered that interview. Prototypical Ayoade classic.
@oMFg Wonder it was the perfect metaphorical representation of what a dumpster fire would look like, the interviewer's struggle.
The best thing about Richard is that he doesn’t go there...where ever there is 🤷♂️

Respect to you Russell, in your growth, awareness and reflectiveness of the changing tides of your life
I've only just realized that Travel Man is a character and not Richard Ayoade...
Honestly I feel it's a bit annoying because when he is on shows a lot of times he also is playing that type. He's genuinely interesting when he's himself like this.
Muff Evans I’ve only just realized that from watching this conversation 😳
Interesting, as an American that came off quite evidently to me. The travel man character reminds me a lot from the character he plays in the American movie, The Watch. It's normally more difficult for me to interpret English people so I'm surprised by this.
His Travel Man persona's a caricature of all his private neuroses.
@@SomethingSeemsOff what do you mean by "interpret English people"?😂
I don't always agree with Russell Brand, but I virtually always enjoy his use of language. It's pretty and handsome English. Listening to him is fun and provocative..
I'm the same.
Richard "You're kind to say" Ayoade
I feel like Russell Brand is the type of person to not laugh at jokes, just make a big grin and say "that's very good"
He's a halfwit dilettante, don't be fooled by his verbosity.

I keep trying to tell other Americans about Richard. I think his comedy is absolutely brilliant. Edit: I love him even more after this conversation.
This American loves him. :)
This is a fascinating talk, I usually can't watch/focus on interviews or talks but this really interested me despite not understanding all the references. The calmness and intelligence displayed by both was incredibly comforting as was the mutual respect they show each other.
Two of the most intriguing minds of this age. I'm savoring this interview like my favorite sweet treat. Brilliant!
Such striking chemistry here. What a rarity in these types of interview situations.
I’m definitely pleasantly surprised by the seriousness of the video, extremely intellectual
I am currently on a Richard Ayoade binge... this is a great man
Richard has the endearing quality of being himself and still a character appealing to many. Comedians who endure have built their own shtick but one’s that build a falseness around it don’t endure. Richard firstly appealed to me as Moss, he was actually directed to be himself as a character. That is actually a very respectable and maybe vulnerable quality.
Bucket list for me is to meet Richard and thank him for being him
I'm only 6 minutes in, I've laughed, I've cried, and I've watched Russell change positions innumerable times in the process of active listening.
Wow, two intelligent erudite human beings having a genuine conversation on the internet
Sad to think that Richard doesnt think he has entertained us, he most certainly does.
Love the it crowd and gadget/travel man.
Just bought Richard's book on audio...like Russell, his voice is too hard to resist.
Two of my favorite men, intelligent , smart , funny and interesting.
Man, I could listen Richard for days. What a lovely man.
"aiming for greatness is quite silly you should be interested in what you're doing and who knows what it's going to be"
"It's also people not being ok with their limitations and not realizing that there's a space here that can also be occupied and it's fine"
it's a good clarification for "living in the now" and making every moment count
Brilliant.
Richard's voice! So soothing.
What a great pairing - equally eloquent and reasonable.
The part where Richard completely disregards his history of entertaining us, really breaks my heart. Moss and Roy were my college heroes. Someone give that man a hug and tell him he deserves some recognition.
Great conversation with Mr. Brand!
knowing that you are not okay at a lot of things and not worrying about it while simultaneously embracing it and using it as fodder for creativity, takes a great amount of self assuredness. eg, someone can laugh at all their failings and faults because they know they don't define or indicate value
i love richard ayoade. thanks for bringing him on your show russell youre amazing, this is too amazing
Richard has entertained me from day one. Super funny and smart at the same time.
I clicked like without even watching. I know I'm gonna like this combo. I'm anxious that once I listen it I can never hear it for the first time again. I might be obsessed with them.
These two radiate so much charm and warm-heartedness.
Give this man his flowers 💐 yo ! He has never been anything but authentic and humble. The quality of human being I imagine Richard to be always comes across so genuine
