  • Look at those 12 switches! Here’s another one of my wacky studio guitars taking the instrument to new heights. This is utilizing a loaded pickguard from AMI Guitar Upgrades to get over 200 pickup combinations compared to a regular Strat’s 5 combos. This guitar is madness and I love it. Do you hear a difference?

this is really cool however there’s still like 4 inches of real estate space. I expect a blend roller for every combination, like the volume & tones on offset rhythms circuits

Well, Johnny Marr actually has a Strat with 9 single coils and 18 switches.

I built and even ,ore complicated version of this with an extra minihumbucker in the middle a few years ago. Fun to play with and it quickly teaches you the human ear can only really differentiate between a few pick up settings and many just aren't useable. This can be more confusing than useful when in the studio and you need to dial a tone in quickly. What seemed like a good idea could have been done better and cheaper with an EQ pedal.
Guitars like this are supposed to be the ultimate sizes army knife but they still just end up sounding like a modded Strat with a few extra options.
Hell yeah they are cool and fun but really impractical. Every time you can make on a guitar has been done and the ones left don't sound greatly but don't worry about that so much. It's what you do with the tones. It's like thinking you can invent a better wheel after all this time instead of trying to use that knowledge to build better cars. Much of guitar tone comes down to recording and mixing techniques too so worrying about 100 pick up settings just isn't logical.
    Cool video cheers
