What’s the Dear John movie about?
John Tyree (Channing Tatum from Step Up and The Eagle), an American Special Forces soldier, takes advantage of a leave in the USA to see his father and go surfing. Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried from Solstice and Mamma Mia!) is a student and they meet by chance on the beach. It's love at first sight between them, and although they belong to two different worlds, an absolute passion brings them together for two weeks. But John has to leave again and, following the September 11 attacks, he is sent to Afghanistan. As for Savannah, she must return to the University. For several months, John and Savannah write heated letters to each other. Savannah, more and more worried about the safety of her beloved, questions herself. As desires and responsibilities become more and more opposed, the couple struggles to maintain their commitments. Then, at the worst possible moment, John receives a letter of rupture without any other explanation. He is destroyed and does not understand what is happening to him. When he returns to America for his father's funeral, he sees Savannah again. This one got married. The young girl has not given in to a whim or to her family's orders: if, in John's absence, she has chosen to marry Tim (Henry Thomas from E.T.), whom she has known since childhood, it is because he is suffering from cancer and someone has to take care of his son Alan, an endearing child who is also autistic. Even though the end credits come before the denouement, we understand that after Tim's death, John and Savannah will be able to love each other and raise Alan together, respecting the memory of his father.

women love to make it about them, about how hard it is for them, no matter what. He could have been sitting there with no arms and legs and she would have been like " I COULDNT, IT WAS TOO HARD FOR ME, CANT YOU SEE THAT???:((
Being without the person you love is hard . How do you not comprehend her showing him that is how much she cares . Lol
@@jesuschristislord6790 shut up
I grew up in a war and I live in a “peaceful” society now. It’s not much different 🙃
It’s not easy for the loved ones back at home (not the same). But usually it’s because of how worried they are not because their life sucked without them for a not that big of a length of time.
She could've helped sick Tim and his son without actually having to marry him. It's important to have clear, good boundaries for life... Whoever said you needed to marry a sick person in order to help them? Draw the line. Help them but protect your own as well ❤️
@Miss Manawaka People don’t always get married for love, that’s actually extremely naive. For a lot of people, it is merely a transaction, a contract. For some, it’s for financial security, for others it’s comfort or company and in this case Tim needed around the clock help for himself and his autistic son. Legally it helped and once he died, he knew she would never leave his son alone. On top of that, in terms of finance, living together & her reputation in a small town, not to mention being an actual mother to a child who already has trouble adjusting to the world. It was actually pretty noble of her to even offer to sacrifice her happiness and put a dying man and autistic child before herself. The fact that you guys are even having this debate proves that.
@Miss Manawaka The character in the book and the movie very clearly state that they felt they did the right thing for the Tim and his son & even Tim told John that she sacrificed her happiness & love for him to do so because she has always had a big heart and she didn’t want to leave them without any support, they were essentially alone at the end of the day & required substantial aid and time, so yes it was a noble deed. I can’t even imagine how draining and isolating it must have been for her, but she chose to be a mother to a boy whose own mother abandoned him and essentially a nurse to a dying man whose wife abandoned him. It’s strange that people don’t see how selfless she was here.
However I do apologize if I unknowingly insulted or offended you as that was never my intention, I was merely trying to explain the character’s arc.
I agree
@@taraz6786 you do know you can help ppl without having to marry them right? selfless? imagine how that dude feels receiving a letter saying thanks but no thanks being thousands of miles away fighting for his life. this movie makes no sense...
@@zuadao She could have helped him temporarily sure, but not permanently and around the clock the way Tim and his child needed. She had to sacrifice in order to be there full time, in order to be a mother and a full time nurse/partner.

Let’s be real here. They spent more time apart then they ever did together. They lived separate lives most of the time and had this huge romantic idea of each other. They knew the minute he committed to more time they wouldn’t see each other. Life happens

I can see where she is coming from, yes she’s still in the wrong… but I do understand how hard it was for her to wait for him. Remember it’s not like he was across the country just sitting on the beach, he was at WAR. That’s scary asf. Thinking is he coming home or not, is he alive. And that sudden urge to see him but you can’t, and then the letters that were probably sent months after another. So I get how hard it might’ve been for her, but dude stayed and he loved you and through everything, he deserved a call or a letter written back to at least talk about it. And he’s at war. He’s dealing with enough but he stayed for you because he loves you. I can see why people are mad, because it does seem like she’s gaslighting him. But I can see her side even if she’s in the wrong I can still see why it was hard for her.
Thank you. I never understood her back then. I think I'm more sympathetic now 🤷🏻♀️. Life ... will teach you the lesson you look down on 😂

He's a simp. Plain and simple. She wasn't even willing to be loyal and true while he was away fighting in a war. What makes John think that she will be loyal and true in peace time on the home front? She's for the streets.
Fuel ain't my rifampin
Trying to justify marrying another dude while boyfriend's away must be hard...so stop trying...everyone understand how cheaters operates...your understanding of them don't justify their actions.
Every word that came out of her mouth was absolute, pure garbage.
-Deflecting
-Blaming
-Self victimizing
-rationalizing her terrible behavior
-contradicting her own statements
-manipulation by crying
-going into hysterics over being calmly asked to provide a Non-BS answer
Pure and simple, she took absolutely ZERO accountability for her actions.
If anything, my mannz dodged a huge bullet when she left his life. What a train wreck of a girl.
Women cry a lot about how men dont validate their feelings. All the dude wanted was for her to validate his feelings and acknowledge she was the cause of his heartbreak so he could get closure. She couldnt even give him that much. Instead, she poured salt in the wound by blaming him and making herself out to be the victim.

This girl was trifling. How are you going to send your boyfriend off to war? Then, Mary the guy that he was jealous of you being with? She made it sound like she was forced to marry that dude. It’s like, sis, nobody told you to marry him. You could have helped out with the son and his dad without having to marry him. Like I said in the beginning, she was trifling.
Savanah had a big heart and John knew it to the very first time they met. People should read the book to understand this clearly. Both her parents died while John was away and it was Tim who was with her the whole time. They were there for each other. She did not cheat or anything like that as some comments say. She slowly fell in love with Tim which explains her letters becoming lesser as time went by. She told John all this in her letters. They loved each other clearly but life happens and it steers us away into unexpected directions. Also at the end of the book, John wanted to know if she still loves him so he went to see for the last time if she ever went out to watch the full moon like they used to, as a symbolic way of saying they love and think of each other, and she went outside to watch the full moon. And it was enough for John to know she loves him still.
She is not the villain here. Nobody is. Thats how good this story is. Nobody's a villain. It's just that life happens.

@@harry-cj6wu Nope. She could have done countless other things to stave off being impatient and lonely. She was a rich, white & beautiful woman, she could have had her pick of anyone, it’s not like men weren’t vying for her attention, hell she could have just lived life free of any obligations & gone traveling or something. The point is, she had innumerable paths to walk down and yet chose to be tied down to a terminally ill patient who has no family and cannot afford round the clock care and an autistic child who undoubtedly requires a lot more attention and time, after his own mother abandoned him. The life she chose is difficult and draining and she could have had an easy life, so her actions actually take character and heart. When I first watched this movie I hated her for this..when I watched it years later I understood.
Not saying I would do this. Just saying for her character it makes sense. She came across wise but she was a very scared person. She had a lot of beauty in her, one thing was being kind to a fault.
Her kindness and empathy and needing to help him with his autistic son, consumed her as she was filled with emptiness john being gone.
She did the right thing because when he died she got custody of his kid who would have needed a lifetime of help.
It also forced her to become aware of herself as a person. If she would have stayed with john the entire time I don’t know if their relationship would have lasted.

Upside down rank is hilarious
This part really grinded my gears because at first the way he wore that uniform it was correct. But at this scene when you look at the rank on his shoulder, it’s clearly upside down🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
It’s funny because at 2:31 it’s wrong and then the camera angle changes and it’s back to normal
Who cares lmao
This wasn't a scene in the novel. They have a calm reheated dinner with wine. She explains slowly falling in love with Tim as he comforts her during the deployments, after his parents' fatal car crash, and helping him take care of his brother (Alan). She does mention that John reupping and not being able to see her for his 3rd leave (when he took care of his dad after the first heart attack), did them in. Tim and John love Savannah more than she ever loved either of them. They made ultimate sacrifices for her. Tim was her best friend, always giving her hope that John would come back alive and it would all work out. Tim even told John to make her happy when he is gone (also asking for Alan to be taken care of). John responded by saying goodbye to her and selling his dad's coin collection to save Savannah's husband. The experimental drugs work on Tim and he is back home with Savannah. She didn't wait for John during his service and she was willing to betray Tim as he was sick in bed. Even begging to still be a part of John's life by maintaining contact, knowing full well they can't actually be friends.
Both the prologue and epilogue tell the story of true love. They are the same scene of John staring off in the distance at Savannah after the good deed. It's fascinating. Savannah, after all those years, even being married, still looked up at the full moon to remember her only weeks with John. That is saying everything about her. She only thought of herself, her own joy. John, on the contrary, finally learned to do the right thing and be honorable.
The movie cheapens the story of sacrifice so much that it's not worth it. After reading the book, I realized how bad it really was. Prioritize reading Dear John instead. A Walk to Remember and The Notebook are far superior in film. Both stories remain truer to the original content and the sacrifice is still told through the screenplay. Here it's so missed that there is no food for thought. A little about death and illness, but not much mote than that.
I once had a love like this. But it was a betrayed love and I walk away.
good for you
Lmao how she makes it about her
She doesn’t. She did it to help Tim and Alan, it was the only way to keep an autistic kid like Alan out of the system because he wouldn’t have survived it, not to mention be a mother to him while his own mother abandoned him. She also helped Tim all the way through to his death.
“You thought it was tough out there”… dude literally got shot twice 😂
Tim is/was a manipulative bastard with his "pity me, I'm sick, I need your help, and your help and to take care of my son, and by the way, brake up with your boyfriend, let's get engaged (I'll give a big hunk of a diamond engagement ring". Tim also put in place the fact that Savannah would take care of Allan the rest of her life. And he says "he loves her" is that what you do to a young woman who has plans for her life? then he tells John that he is sorry. What a jerk.
Bro had his ranks on upside down
Awe 2:09 he understands and gives her a hug
Thats the hallmark of a real man. Someone who can muster the strength to be gentle and selfless, even in the face of unspeakable pain.
Dear John:
-My name is JEFF
She loved John but him being away from her and at war was too hard for her to handle so she married the other guy, as an escape. Seems irrational, and it was, but she was confused. She didn't know what she was doing, like she said. It's almost like she got caught in a current and wasn't strong enough to fight back. Not saying she acted to right way but circumstances just got the better of her.
This movie will forever infuriate me. As a vet, I saw this happen to too many people.
Anyone else notice his rank is upside down in the first half of the video 😂
It’s like I have ESPN or something
I’m pretty sure she called him “my precious.”
His response should: My name is Jeff…
Permission to have this on my talent night please 🙏✨
Dear John >The Notebook.
Great movie but it makes me REALLY mad every single time. And Amanda is Hard to get mad at but this movie DOES IT.
She was not alone.. She was with Tim they were together, working on something.. Not him he was alone.. He was literally alone cuz she had already betrayed him
I read the book 📖 😃 🙂
I did too and it was sooooooo different with how she ended up with Tim. I don't remember alan being in the movie but in the book only
Me too. And, watch the movie. I remember when my sister watch the movie and how angry she was at this scene.
That rank is upside down man! I had that rank in the army.
I saw that years back too. Thank you for your service!
Because you havent lap dance me!
lol!!
Amanda Seyfried is glorious
Yeah but not that Savannah Curtis 😂
Funny how if a guy cheats in a film he's portrayed as a fickle pig who deservers everything he gets. But if a woman cheats its only because the guy 'forced her to' and its up to him to go to the cheater to ask for her to take him back.
In my opinion both cheaters are filthy pigs. Man or woman, and deserve to be regarded as a pile of crap.
That’s hardly true. We’re mostly shown men cheating and it’s normalized, sometime even comedic because the ‘woman’ either bored them or drove them to it in a different manner. The disparity is extremely clear.

After watching it again, I think Savannah ended their relationship because she felt abandoned and not needed by John. Thats why it was easy for her to choose to move on and marry Tim who was sick. And John didn't assure her of their future together.
I think her biggest mistake was her underestimating their feelings with each other.
