They had a 2 week romance and she waited for him to come back because he promised he would be home with her then. But he came home screwed up and then broke his promise and left again. She found someone who wanted and needed her. He should not have broke his promise
He kept his promise the best he could. She never promised him a thing. I’m sure there were thousands of broken promises after 9/11. Thanks to all those soldiers who made damn hard choices to fight for America. They both moved forward and did the righteous thing.

Plus, the original story in the book is more worst, they end up happy together savannah and tim, Tim heals because of john money. The movie story is a bit better though. Which tim died and john reunited with her again at the end.
