Hey Steve! Having worked on a larger Magic Sculpt piece myself, let me share a mixing technique. Instead of mashing two balls of MS together, roll each component into a snake and twist the two together. Then fold that spiral over on itself once or twice and mash together. Then roll it out into a snake again. Then fold the snake into equal halves and twist it together again. Repeat until your MS putty is completely mixed. Your hands will thank you! Cheers!
This is the best material in action video that I have seen in a very long time. You get right into the job with the minimum of background padding. Fantastic. I've subscribed and will be following the rest of your videos. Nice sculptures too.
Thankyou so much for these videos. It is so helpful learning another artist's techniques and processes. I know you dont get much out of making these videos, so I just want to let you know that it really does help a lot of us out and I hope you continue this great work.
@@SteveFerrera Man Steve it is soooo helpful I am waiting on some magic sculpt to arrive and let the magic begin. this video has given me many good ideas! love your instagram feed also.
For smoothing large areas of epoxy clay, I've had good luck with rubber tools. Specifically, the princeton catalyst wedge #6 (the big white one). A dollar store silicone spatula would probably work about the same if you could find one that isn't too soft. Epoxy clay is weird, I've found the amount of time pressure is applied is just as important as the amount of pressure applied. It's sorta non-newtonian and mischievous.
I use and old style food chopper ( hand crank meat grinder) to mix and blend both parts evenly, it also softens the stuff as you grind it from heat friction.... This saves alot on your hands.
I am so sorry that here in Brazil there is no Epoxy Clay brand ... I was trying to find a DIY with a formula to produce my own epoxy clay ... Congratulations for the work! You have a new subscriber...
Great video! Im enjoying the series a lot. Will soon start on my own toy/sculpture, but this video gave me an idea of using this air dry clay I got, but its really elastic and doesn't work for earrings (what I actually bought it for), so ill be using it as ones uses magic sculpt. Ill see how it turns out. Cant wait for the next video!
I see your are using Golden Paint.. Good stuff but Really Expensive!! Not to mention the 10LB containers of Magic Sculpt.. Got to love the stuff though.
Thank you so much! Just purchased Magic Sculpt, trying new material. Question - have you tried scrubbing the clay after raking? Does it work? To reduce sanding
I try to get it as smooth as possible before it dries- but sometimes it's sets up faster than i'd like when I'm doing large scale so I just plan on excessive sanding :)
Is it possible to make the clay mixture more gluey/slimey/liquidy-like first then apply to a surface? Do I just dip the mixture in warm water and it smooths out?
I wet my hands to soften it. Also, apply it quickly right after it's mixed while it's super soft. There's also a lighter weight version that's super sticky - almost like peanut butter- called air something...
So, I'm researching different mediums for possible use in sculpting my own small figurines of the Muppets. This is the first video about Magic Sculpt that I stumbled across...and the guy is wearing a Muppets shirt. Must be a sign lol
Absolutely amazing. Would you recommend that product for learning? Like absolute beginners? I imagine the fast-setting makes it more suited for experienced sculptors that know what they're doing? I don't mind the price so much as the learning experience.
Amazing video I have used apoxie sculpt by Aves a lot but have never used magic sculpt. I am wondering what specific type of foam you use and where you can get it?
As a rule, try not to put anything in your lungs that's not air. Even 'non-toxic' fine powder should not find their way in your lungs. They will thank you. You don't always need the full respirators when there are no fumes or vapors involved, just use simple particle masks.

Thanks! I often ask myself it it's worth the time. So it's nice to hear that people are actually getting something out of them.

Thanks for sharing your techniques!!! I had no idea about magic sculpt. Can’t wait to try it🙆🏻♀️
Keep up the incredible work and these videos 🤙🏻
Super cool info share, totally dig your work, got me thinking about some of my projects moving forward, thanks!
I'd appreciate it if you could provide information on the half face respirator and what filters you are using when sanding - Thanks!
check the notes on my vids- I link the amazon link :)

Air dry clay also often changes size while drying. Which makes it complicated for drying.

Don't know what I'd do without Magic Sculpt :)
So glad to see an artist wear a mask while sanding. That stuff is not toxic but wearing masks while sanding anything is just healthier.
yep! last thing I need is more chemicals in my body :)
Magic sculpt es mi material favorito!

yep- sooner you start the soon you become advanced :)
this looks great! did you end up sculpting over the foam body? just curious
nevermind i just saw part 3 haha oops
It's carved from a giant block with a C n C machine based off a digital file :)
Amazing video I have used apoxie sculpt by Aves a lot but have never used magic sculpt. I am wondering what specific type of foam you use and where you can get it?
XPS foam from Insultherm. :)
Is this waterproof once it sets? I want to use it for outdoor Halloween decorations but we get high winds and rain. Thanks
yep- the magic sculpt is basically a hard epoxy- can also paint it and seal it for extra protection
I’m trying to restore a large panther manse out of plaster. It’s ears and teeth are missing, would you recommend this product for this application?
definitely! easy to sculpt if you add water and very durable- can sand it super thin too.
I'm looking to make my own minis for board games like Warhammer. Does Epoxy would work for that?
Yes it will
Great video! I have 2 questions: Can I apply Magic Sculpt directly onto a 3D Styrofoam Sculpture? Can it be used with a silicone mold?
yes and yes- but some styrofoams are too slippery for it to stick. but the blue eps foam works great
8:42 master level 9000
Every time you knock on your sculpture, my dogs go crazy and start barking 😂
:)
Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much.. great work! Like your art
We need someone to create an oven bake magic sculpt so you dont need worry about it setting and work as long as you need.
would be nice
How does magic sculpt compare to aves apoxie sculpt?
where can I buy this product in Lisbon, Portugal
If Amazon ships to you, you can get everything there. Check out the links in my descriptions :)
Where do you buy your blue eps foam from.
Insul Therm
Where was this stuff 10 years ago?!
you mean the blue foam, or the tutorial ? :)
So it is clay? won´t it dry up and crack like all clay...???
nope -it hardens. It's just like plumbers epoxy but large buckets for sculpting
@@SteveFerrera great thx
How heavy is that?
not heavy at all- the foam is really lite. I actually embed lead weights in the bottom to give it some bottom weight.
does this product require me to use a mask?? is it safe to breathe?
no mask required. doesn't off gas anything. I do wear nitrile gloves though.
@@SteveFerrera thank you :)

15 minutes then one hour before its hard ... thanks for the warning, I'll stick to Apoxie Sculpt!
what's the working time with that one?
Does magic sculpt still smell like cat pee?
lol! It does have that gross oder especially the new stuff.
