  • Two birders from Maine have never been to Oregon. So THAT'S where they choose to search for birds they've never seen, especially a northern pygmy-owl, while taking a two week whirlwind bird tour of the state. Over the first week, a search of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Crater Lake National Park, Klamath Lake turns up many surprises.

I know, right? Everglades in March. Been there 30+ times, so THAT one should be pure fun.

I've lived in western Oregon for almost 30 years and never seen a crow. Ravens are more common. I haven't seen an owl outside the Oregon Zoo either. We do have a huge variety of birds here though.

We loved Oregon. As I understand it, northern pygmy-owls aren't that hard. They can be vocal and active in daylight. But, less so in October!

Been watching all your videos and learning a lot from you! I just saw my 440th bird in the ABA. A Chukar in WI. Hoping to get to 500 birds before I die 😁

I'm at 657, hoping to make 700. To add a lot in a hurry - Alaska and Southeast Arizona. Those two visits bumped me up 50.

@@Bob_Duchesne I need to get to Alaska someday for sure. I’ve been to SE Arizona a couple times and got some amazing birds like Elegant Trogon, Blue-throated Hummingbird and Fan-tailed Warbler 😍

Sept 26 - Oct 11. I wasn't planning to make a video, but after shooting about a thousand clips, I figured I had to. Great time. Ultimately, six lifers.

Crossing fingers & toes for you to find a pygmy owl but we can tell you you wouldn't be surprised deep down if not, or would you? Hahaha! Enjoy Oregon! It's a gorgeous state.

Owls. My Number One grudge bird nemesis is boreal owl. Pygmy-owl just bumped up to the Number Two spot. On the other hand, I DID get the Mountain Quail. And Oregon was LOTS of fun.

But seriously, some of it is. I wasn't even going to share this adventure. But then I was so delighted by everything, that I felt is was worthwhile to tell the tale, using whatever tools would help.

Hey, if it works for the Marvel Universe LOL.
But I've learned several things through this little UA-cam adventure. 1) The hardest thing to do is shoot a moving bird from a moving boat. 2) the second hardest thing to do is tell a story in real time when even YOU don't know where it's going. 3) post-processing is a bitch. It can take me a week to edit a 10-minute video.

I worked briefly at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The scientists who's responsibility it was to know everything about the land under their care might be able to tell you what and where certain species were located. I would hazard a guess that state scientists would know too.

I'm happy to say...I DID get my northern pygmy-owl in Arizona in May. Spotted owl, too.
