A good rule of thumb is to wait until the revs come down after a cold start to drive it at all. 30 seconds may or may not be sufficient for this to happen.
@@speeddeacon9516 One day it was so cold, my charge air temps were negative and I started my car waited 20 minutes and the revs never dropped, stayed at 1500 it was that cold lol. I had to drive home, but let me say was a so careful with my clutch and shifting it was nerve racking lol
Yeah the big manual covers the Focus in general. If you refer to the ST supplement, it says nothing about cold weather, at least on my 14 it doesn't. So sorry to hear about your problems, don't give up on it, it is a really well performing car.
Awesome video my man! Informative and funny! I used to live in South Philly PA and now AC NJ so I feel your cold weather pain! Loving my 17 ST! I smoked a Fiesta ST driving to work yesterday. The engine temp was a quarter off cold so probably not a good idea. Thank God all is still well. I won't be doing that again though. Keep up the great work!
Thanks! I am glad you enjoyed the video and found it informative. I have been known to use the power before the car is warm. It's still good. But I try to remember to wait. It's a fun car. Enjoy it!
Speed Deacon yea these cars too fun to wait lol I'm trying too though! I've owned many cars and this is definitely the most fun car ever! Also used to let my car cool down for minutes but I won't do that again. 10 seconds then off. I may take a look at those clamps when I do my first oil change today. You gave me a lot of good info. Thanks again!
Speed Deacon Hahaha that's too funny because the salesman said he got "giddy" whenever he drove the car! I was cracking up. Then I understood what he meant when he took us further from the dealership and to some awesome back roads. I had a blast! When people say this is an economy car I'm like Um no, my Elantra was an economy car. This is a serious little back road winding speed demon! And surprisingly comfortable for longer drives. I'm impressed to say the least. For the price the performance can't be beat. Can't say enough great things about this car!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it and made it that far into the video! Your comments are very much appreciated. It is very nice to be considered as such.
Awesome video SD! Just picked up my 2014 ST and drove it back to NY all the way from TX. It's all tricked out with all kinds of goodies (stage 3 I believe) and I am really psyched every time I sit in it...woop woop! Btw, besides being very funny (I equate that with intelligence) I found your video very informative. Keep up the funny work ;)
Thanks and welcome to the ST family! Focus ST is a great car. I drove mine from PA to UT and back again. Drove great! I hope you continue to enjoy your car!
Great video! Looks like you have put a lot of work into this one. I like the pointers as well. I know there was at least one of those each viewer was wondering about 🤔! Keep up the good work!
Hello fellow Pittsburgher and thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I found so many things I didn't know myself when I looked them up. I have other things to share if I can get the time to put them together. It takes a little time to do it.
one winter i had to drive my vr4 in winter. It had nitto 555. No issues, just brake early and keep a good distance from those in front. Common sense. Thing was a blast in snow and empty parking lots though. I had a pipe come off before. Sounded like an explosion from it smacking the bottom of the hood lol.
Non-winter tires can lead to some great drifting opportunities! I kind of got ripped off on my hose coming off. No boom, or explosion, or anything. At least nothing was hit, I guess.
Thank you! Glad you liked it! It was a very minor problem, although to be honest it happened a couple of more times. At least now I know how to fix it myself.
Regular summer treads can be driven in the cold, but performance summer tires should not be driven below 40 degrees. www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=273
good advices :) I often drive at night or very early morning 4-5 am in winter when the temps go below 44.6 I put winter tires on, summer performance tires become very stiff and loose all grip, fyi I got out one morning to "see" what kind of intake air temps I would have....instead of my normal 23psi@3500rpm I had 30.45psi @1600rpm O_O also my air temp at the engine was 26°F yikes (between 14°F and 5°F outside) very cold air temps can definitely overwhelm your boost control so watch out for that ;)
You should t have summer tires from the dealer in all season climates. Hmm. And next, on cold starts first thing, DO let the car Idle and warm up at least 5 minutes. The fluids will not be upto temp enough to do what they are designed to do. So let oil temp come up off of C by at least a few needle widths before moving into gear. Do not exceed 1500 rpm until oil temp is up at least 1/2 way to normal.
Dealers do normally put all season tires on all sold in my area. However, I always order my cars and I get them with summer performance tires for autocrossing and track days because they are about twice as sticky as all season tires on dry roads. I got the information about not warming up the motor from Popular Mechanics and several other reputable publications. You can read the article from Popular Mechanics here: www.popularmechanics.com/cars/a19086/warming-up-your-car-in-the-cold-just-harms-engine/ Thanks for visiting and commenting!
Michael Harris again, yeah. Please cite a source or something for reference so we may understand where you learned such a thing. Every car is different, so your rpm caution goes out the window. Also, your motor typically only needs ~45 seconds to get oil lubricating all it's nooks and crannies. Afterwards I normally shift around 1500 rpm in my srt just because it starts to get loud after that. Shifting at 1500 in some cars is lugging your motor like you're riding on a tractor. I'd say you'd even be safe at 2k. Staying out of boost until your oil temp comes up is definitely a good idea if you're trying to preserve your turbo as well.
Smart! I have to get the winter tires, mud flaps, and Weather Tech mats installed soon because I use mine all year. Must be nice not to worry about it!
Title is way misleading but nonetheless this is a good thing to discuss and more people should be aware of charge pipes blowing off for one reason or another. My hot side pipe blew off in my Fiesta and thank God it wasn't while I was passing someone because once the power goes it's gone and it could compromise safety big time. Always tighten those charge pipes.
Sorry for the misleading title. Yeah the power is gone and then it is the slowest car on the road. Dangerous! This has happened to me a couple of more times and so I went to Auto Zone and got a deluxe and very big strong clamp and have had no trouble since.
the same thing happen to me when I was delivery a Hyundai genesis 2.0 turbo car to a dealer ship.. was on the boost a lot that the hose pop off. i thought the same thing you did, that I blew the turbo up.
One of my past jobs was to deliver cars on dealer trades. It's scary when I thought I blew my own turbo, I can imagine how scary it must have felt to think you blew up a turbo that wasn't yours! Always scary on those dealer runs for me.
Great! Beat the shit of a car that a poor customer will buy thinking it’s new. SMH. I refused my first Mercedes c400 because the exhaust was full of carbon. The person delivering the probably beat the heck out it. I didn’t sign for it as I paid for a new car. the dealer ordering a new one and gave a courtesy car for 3 months until the order arrived. Shame on you for driving a potential customers car like that.
Great video. Good content and humor appreciated. I don't have an oil temp gauge in my Abarth. I wonder how long (below say 20 degrees F) it takes after coolant is running temp before oil is warm enough to drive spiritedly?
Thank you for your comments! For my car, it seems to take about 3 to 4 times longer (3.5 more accurately) for the oil to warm compared to the water (i.e. if the water temp takes 10 minutes on a cold day, it is 35 minutes for the oil temperature to come up to temperature, if the water temp takes 5 minutes on a cold day, it is about 17.5 minutes for the oil temperature to come up to temperature. Although that is if the car has sat for a long time without being driven (i.e. overnight). If it is only a couple of minutes or hours that the car has been sitting, the oil takes considerably less time to come up to temperature because the oil holds the heat better than the coolant does and is better protected from the weather than the coolant and doesn't take as long to warm up. Although, this is a Focus that I am talking about. I don't have an Abarth so the results may be different for you. I would think that because the engine is smaller, the oil would heat a little faster than a Focus based on the fact that smaller engines warm up faster, but that depends on other factors like how much oil your car has. 10 qt. Ferraris take forever to warm up because there is so much oil keeping the engine lubricated, which is why many owners of those cars heat the oil even in the summer. But if your car has the normal 4-5 quarts of oil, it should be about the same or a little faster warming than the Focus. I hope this helps.
cold weather is the best for a turbo once its warm, cold air is much more dense causing much easier boost building capabilities, so the turbos work less. the cold wouldnt destroy a turbo
I know the summer is over now, i live here in Las Vegas. The average heat this summer was 106, because it's hot how important would an intercooler would be? I notice performance loss in the summer here. Sorry for the noob question, I don't have much knowledge about cars haha i just fell in love with the focus st because a friend let me drove his. I bought mine in 2017, kona blue
An intercooler upgrade is amazing for the Focus ST as the stock one is too small. I live in Pittsburgh and it usually doesn't get much hotter than 90 and at autocross events my car is junk on the final 3 runs because it gets to hot. Enjoy the kona blue. The Focus ST is a great car.
I could show it to you, but it fell off again and so I bought an ordinary thicker and stronger clamp at Auto Zone and haven't had a problem since. The Ford clamp has a screw to tighten the clamp and a screw to keep the clamp attached to the intercooler. That second screw seems to cause the clamp to fail. The regular clamp from Auto Zone of course does not have the screw to attach it to the intercooler but it seems to be strong enough that it does not matter.
Interesting where the hose detached. When I was installing my Cobb intake, I noticed the worm clamps on the inlet side were thumb tightened from the factory... I didn't need a socket to loosen them. It was extremely irritating. I wonder if Mister Thumb-Tighten also had his hands on your car.
Hilarious, dry delivery. I live in California but definitely will think about warming the car up via oil temps + getting a fire extinguisher + first aid kit + blanket.
Not sure it was all due to the car wash? Most of the water sitting near the turbo should have evaporated even with the relative windchill, which may have been partially shielded because of all the components and panels in the way...
Hello Speed. I've enjoyed your videos about your Focus ST, but I have a question about your Recaros. Did you find them comfortable right from the get go? Or did they have to break in for you to find them comfortable? I test drove a ST3 a few years and found the thigh bolsters to be really uncomfortable. I'm curious if they would become tolerable with time & break in. I could go with a ST1, but I like the idea of the upgraded head unit and Sync3 that comes with ST3.
The radio and Sync3 are must haves in my book. They are that important and good. I wanted the yellow seats but you cannot get the radio and Sync3 and the yellow seats for some odd reason, something about the electronics of the heating element with the navigation....not sure. I HATED the Recaros when I first got them. I am much wider than the bolsters and I found them way uncomfortable and stiff. After I few thousand miles I ABSOLUTELY LOVE them! I actually feel unsafe in other cars now because the support is great. The seats are like other leather products like tennis shoes and baseball gloves, you don't like them new, but once they break in you love them. The bolster fit me fine now and the leather has softened (I did apply conditioner to them to speed this process somewhat). Now they are like racing recliners now. Don't worry about getting them if you are buying new. They will form perfectly to you in no time.
Sounds as if you broke the shaft rather than part of the impeller, luckily for you. Bits of fin breaking off the impeller can find their way into the combustion chamber and that's really not good! Not idling a car is a government mandated instruction designed to reduce emissions, that won't hurt the engine at all. I don't push mine hard till the oil temp gauge is almost in the middle, pointing upwards - it's too risky otherwise. The turbocharger runs at a couple of hundred thousand rpm, it NEEDS good lubrication, and that means hot oil. Cold oil just isn't going to get where it's needed when it's needed.
5-10 minutes is a bit excessive but it won't hurt to take the extra caution. You're normally just looking for your oil temps to drop back down so you don't get any hot oil sediment in your turbo. If you don't like sitting in your car for a minute before you turn it off then you can always get a turbo timer to do the work for you. It'll keep your turbo spinning and circulating oil until it cools off and then it'll shut everything down for you.
Great video ...even though I live in PHX I learned some stuff. This might have been asked before, but how did you black out your splitter? Is it vinyl? Or paint or something?
Thanks! I am glad you got something out of it, even in Phoenix. I thought when I made it that it only applied to half the country. My black lower splitter is nothing more than a carbon fiber decal/sticker that is meant for the side of a car that I applied. It is a $5 to $10 cost at Auto Zone. I wanted the look of the Mountune lower chin spoiler, but I was not paying $200. So I figured out how I needed to cut it to properly fit into vertical bars and wrap around vertical bar. I think it looks just as good as the chin spoiler for MUCH LESS money. If you are interested I can do a video on how to do it. It's easy once you know out how to cut it.
Great video. I don't have those problems my car is stored every winter. I noticed a Gibson SG as you were putting the tire to bed. Do you play. Guitar I mean.
EVIL 7 - Thanks! You are correct. That is a Gibson SG. I do play guitar. In fact all music in the video was written and performed by me, although the drums and bass are electronic. The guitar parts were done on the SG. It's fun. You can debate the quality I guess, but it avoids any copyright infringement problems.
Can I ask how you like your ST and how long you've been driving it? I'm looking into getting one and just want some real customer input. Also awesome video, really funny. Definitely subscribing!
The Focus ST is absolutely wonderful! I really enjoy it. I will have had it for one year on Wednesday and in that year I have driven 17,171 miles. I know because I love the numbers 17 and 71 and I took a picture of the odometer tonight. I love how the car looks, I still look at her when I walk away from her. I love how she drives, especially how she handles, it is a blast to drive. If you take one for a test drive you will love it. It is really fun! It is also quite affordable to own and to upgrade.
Speed Deacon thanks so much for the reply! I have been looking for a car for almost two years now because I'm just so picky!! I saw the focus st and was really drawn to it but of course all videos on it talk about how bad it is. I'm finally going to test drive it (and hopefully get it) next week. I really hope I fall in love with it like I've been expecting to. Loving the videos, keep it up!
Dude this has happened to my st 2 times when I first got it the hose just came right off in the same spot I found the issue myself both times but I took it to the dealership the second time just to ask and see why it was coming off, they said the clamps the put on stock were a little to weak to support the boost, so the recommended getting different clamps and different hoses(aftermarket) the mechanic I spoke with also owned an st and said he had the same issue
so many people treating their turbo cars like an normal Automatic. All fast cars wear out faster if people driving aggressively any time and with condition of the car they want, something going to blow, especially with a turbo . I drive my 15's ST like an old 4 cylinder Rav4 after cold start, never gas aggressively never race never let turbo kick in at least another 10 minutes of driving.
Thanks for the great reminders. This is only my second turbo and my other turbo was the same exact motor in the Ford Fusion. So I am learning. By the time I figure it all out, I will need a new motor. Of course at that point it could be the Focus ST gets the non-turbo Mustang Coyote 5.0L if I can't get the hang of the turbo care and maintenance.
The handling of a 2013 and up Focus ST is amazing. It works great completely stock. I wanted an RS when I bought my ST, but the dealership was sold out of their allotment. They said try the ST you might like it. I drove it and it was a blast. It is still a blast to drive even now almost a year later. The handling is great.
thank god summer is close :) everyone knows that during winter you should drive at least 30 mins ( normal drive ) before to accelerate like a madman :)
Tomas Suberek - Yes! Except I find it so hard sometimes to wait! Spring is soon to be here. Can't wait to get the summer treads out from under the blankets!
1 you blew off a charge pipe NOT the turbo 2 "the cold" didnt magically make it pop off, the invoice has the technicians story clearly stating "clamp missing" which would be a pretty easy way to pop off a charge pipe while making boost..
It was the charge pipe, but blowing the turbo sounded better. The issue was what I suspected at the time and it did make an interesting video of what not to do in the cold with your vehicle. This issue has happened twice more to my Focus ST. The real issue is not the missing clamp, the real issue is the Ford clamp is cheap and breaks and that is why it goes missing. The last time it happened I was able to catch the clamp and see its condition. Since then I began using a different clamp from Auto Zone and I have had no problem at all with it.
"Because flares are fun" hahaha love the video, real honest tips were great, , spot on humor, love the pun with your channel title (I grew up doing church stuff for ages). Sweet Gibson Sg too! Careful though, I brought a Dodge Avenger wheel inside to display and it decided to succumb to gravity and chewed my Ibanez Rg7 string's paint (frown faace). I'm in the market for an St and that yellow bugger looks mean! Hadta subscribe after this one man, nice work 😎👌🏻
SLEEPER98RT - Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your great comments about it. No worry about the wheels. They are back on the car now. The SG is safe.
Ta iam going for it come spring . Iam on the mr300 . And the.lower mount turns the car into some thing better tork streer . But you say you dont get wheel spin just grip
When you say never race in cold weather... do you mean even if the car is already warmed up? I love giving it some gas at night on a colder California night
He means the phyiscal engine being warm , due to the fact that turbocharged needs to be warm to work properly . Having the car shut off over night for 7 hours and starting and ripping your rpms you will damage something
Everyone needs a goal to shoot for I guess. They are nice tail lights to look at if you can keep them in view. If you find the right evo you even get to hear a really nice exhaust fade into the distance.
When your turbo blow and you tried getting on it how much boost did it produce cause I think I might have the same issue I give it gas and nothing the most boost it produce is about 5psi
I officially did not blow the turbo, the hose just came disconnected. My boost was nothing after that. Yours, because you have a little boost, is probably just loose. If it was blown it would be zero. I know a number of people that had their hose come off or be loose. It's hard to check because of the tight space, but that is where to look first. If you can't do it the dealership or other shop can find it with it lifted pretty quick.
0-60 times are generally not a good indication of the acceleration or speed of comparing different vehicles anyway. It's all dependent on gearing (the Focus ST has to shift twice to get to 60 mph, while most other performance cars only shift once) and traction (which a FWD car like a Focus ST cannot do very well, although having an LSD REALLY helps, but rolling starts and passing gear acceleration it is really good at). The point I was trying to make was just to show how bad the motor is without the turbo engaged on the ST. Thanks for taking the time to comment and view!
Ahhh shucks! I found the way to get google maps on there, but for some reason my phone has to be connected via usb. Better than nothing i guess. Thanks man!
I found it on Ebay. www.ebay.com/itm/FOCUS-ST-RS-FORD-PERFORMANCE-WINDSHIELD-BANNER-VINYL-GRAPHICS-STICKER-FIESTA-ST-/302281954587?var=&hash=item466168951b:m:mOVd7JweY7r5URyQNnNqSKQ&vxp=mtr The seller ships fast and well packaged. It is less than $25, which I think is very good for such a quality and licensed product. It sticks perfectly and none of the letters have come up on it anywhere.
TB Freshness - CJ Pony Parts. www.cjponyparts.com/hoodie-pull-over-black-with-red-st-logo-x-large/p/CJ1520X/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwZPNv-K-2AIVQy-BCh2TKwNNEAQYASABEgJCGvD_BwE. It is quite reasonable in price. They have a matching T-shirt as well.
Absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. Best mod you can make to your car. It will change your life! Absolutely the best mod you can make for sure. The cost seems expensive, but after having it installed for over a year now, I can say it is the highest value mod you can make based on what a difference it makes in your car. It will increase the speed, improve handling, increase traction, save your brakes and tires, and all with incredible durability. It is much better quality over the stock unit for sure. I can't recommend it enough.
Speed Deacon that's awesome! I just got a 2017 ST after trading in my Mazdaspeed 3. Looking forward to driving this car and modding it while keeping my warranty. I'm familiar with the platform already too so that helps. What area of the country are you from?
Well lucky you! I had had the same thing happen to me here in Texas a year ago. But since no parts were broken my service plan didn't cover that so they charged me $250 and kept my car three days with no loaner but thats just my luck lol
That's horrible! This has since happened to me again. This time on a Friday on the way home with an autocross event the next day. So I figured out where the issue happened. I then bought a real clamp from an auto parts store and fixed it myself. It's hard to get to with just a jack, but you can manage. You have to remove the headlight and struggle to get the hose in place. But now it is free. It is so tight now I don't think it will ever come off.
YES! YES! YES! I wish I could convince the purchasing manager (a.k.a. my wife) of that. She would say no even without knowing all the other upgrades that would be required to make it good (injectors, fuel pump, etc.). Maybe if I sold the Mustang......
That was an option at the time. When I took the car into the dealership they had a nitrous blue RS that they were going to give me for the same 0% financing and monthly payment if I extended the term longer. But it was nixed by the purchasing manager (wife).
Speed Deacon I think you live near me. I hope it wasn't the one they dropped off the truck. They fixed it and put it back in the sales floor. And I have pics to prove it.
Wow! Really? Where do you live Lance? I can see damage happening for sure. When I got my car serviced there was a Mustang GT350 that had the wing and trunk damaged coming off the truck. I worked at a dealership many years ago and a new truck fell of the lift at its highest point and it was sold anyway. I ordered my Focus ST(which took forever!) so I could get it exactly as I wanted. I was there when the truck brought the car and I took it home the very next day after they prepped it. So this one was not damaged at all. They forgot my console tray (which I still need to get one), but other than that it was perfect. Thanks for viewing and commenting!
The car is completely warm when both the coolant and the oil gauge are in the middle position. Any less and your running the risk of your coolant still being icy. Especially in cold places. The car loves the cold but it doesn’t like to be frozen. Be nice to her
"Big dork" - My wife 100% agrees with that! Sorry to get you worried. Enjoy the Fiesta ST! It is a really nice vehicle. I liked it very much, but my wife thought it too small. Just watch the hose clamps on the turbo. Others have had some problems with them staying on as well.
I thought it was gone. Long gone. I thought that I blew it up and once they checked the electronic black box and learned how I drive the thing there would be no warranty either.
Whoops, I didn't hear that. It's good that you dodged that bullet. Even though your warranty would probably cover it you wouldn't get to drive your car for at least a few days.
That's doesn't seem like a blown turbo. Probably something boost related clamp/seal came loose. I've had similar thing happen punching my car up incline... nice vid tho had me laughing at the war stripes
A clamp fell off and so the hose became detached. Clamp replaced and boost is back. The stripes were funny until I tried to take them off. That stuff is nasty to remove off of your face. It's like sand paper!
Ok people 🤦 windchill doesn't matter to cars. If it's -20F outside and the windchill is -40F what's the temperature?... -20, it's -20. Windchill factor was invented for the soul purpose of helping you, humans, understand how cold it "feels" when it's windy. This helps us figure out what to wear when we leave the house. Windchill is how FAST heat is taken away from your body. It goes like this... it's -20, with the wind it cools things down as if it's -40. The temperature is still only -20, that's the lowest possible temp you can go that day. Now you know, please stop being stupid, geez
YES! YES! YES! That is what I want to do! My wife thinks it's too expensive. I say that all the money we'd save in not paying for heating bills, winter tires and clothing, car washes, etc. would more than pay for itself. Even if it was more expensive after all that, the weather would more than make up for it. I think we've had more rain this week than LA has had since July. I think there is more sunlight in a month than we have all year. It would be nice in CA!
+MannyFresh1x you can pass smog with a straight piped car running rich just takes a little convin$$$ing ;) and fix he piss gas by running e85 ! and enjoy 365 days of sun !!
I live near Pittsburgh and we have emission testing, so I guess I'm used to that whole game of getting your car to pass. I didn't know about the octane thing. That is something I did not know. I spent all day cleaning salt and winter from my car today and now it will rain Tuesday. That is frustrating. Especially when I look and LA and SD are 70's and Sunny for as long as the extended forecast goes. I think I could handle that every day. Even if I had to buy a tanker truck filled with 93 octane to bring with me.
been there done that! you are correct in saying what a shit box once to snail stops working. but how that feeling once you get home and realized it's just a pipe that's popped off, you cannot wait to get back out to boost that bitch again.
It's incredible with the EcoBeast engaged. In fact I think it is so good it is about equal with my 1999 Mustang GT 4.6L. I think I might sell that now.
Speed Deacon This is my dilemma. I currently have a clean 99 GT but have been eyeing the ST for a few years now. I'm not sure I can part with the V8 car. It's just so much fun. Is the ST really at the level where you won't miss the Stang?
Technically the 1999 Mustang GT and the Focus ST run in the same SCCA Autocross class so that gives you an idea of how close they are performance wise. Horsepower 260 vs. 252 is close as well. But they are very different vehicles really. A V8 RWD and 4 cylinder turbo FWD deliver power very differently. The turbo is full of torque down low, more so I think than the Mustang after the split second delay until the turbo kicks in, but the Mustang takes off better from a standstill because of the RWD. Straight line is definitely the Mustang hands down. The Focus ST turns way better than Mustang. At Pocono Raceway when I ran my Mustang there the Focus STs easily caught me through the infield sections. The Focus turns so well. Turns is definitely the Focus ST hands down. However, down the straightaways the Mustang would pull away. The Mustang has another level of oomph at speeds over 100mph that the Focus doesn't have. So it would be hard to get rid of the Mustang for sure. The Focus will not replace the Mustang. In fact I would rather have a new Mustang, but they are so expensive now, almost twice as much as I paid for my Limited Edition in 1999. When I drove the Focus I could not stop laughing. It was (and still is!) a blast. The Focus is also a much better daily driver. The Mustang is rough and the Focus is not. It also has all the modern stuff like Bluetooth, Nav, electronics, etc. the Mustang doesn't have. Being newer it is also easier to mod and fix, etc. They just came out with the new Focus ST Power Pack for instance. But I would miss my Mustang for sure. Sorry for the long response. I have other things to say, but I'll make a video.
Speed Deacon I knew the Mustang would take the Focus in 0-60 and 1/4 mile and I agree completely that the Mustang isn't much of a corner carver or a daily. (At least stock) I'll have to get behind the wheel of an ST and see for myself. Thanks for your thoughts! Appreciate it. I'll be looking forward to that video.
Hopefully I can do that video and some others real soon. Drive the ST and you will very much like it. It is hard to describe how really well done it is.
Says the one with a junky old cobalt. Like those aren't teenage girl cars LOL. I was expecting some kind of v8 or something, but you're just hating because these focus's are miles ahead of your generic motors special
John Gillis actually YES it should happen. I'm actually shocked at the amount of people that don't know how to treat turbo cars in cold weather. Not trying to be mean at all either.
Really because ive had my 135i for five years and its been completely fine lol this should never happen so soon is what im saying. 7 Years old and 140K on my car and its runs like day one.
John Gillis most people should know you don't push turbo cars when it's extremely cold outside and when you first start them up. Like literally a basic common sense thing to know.
A good rule of thumb is to wait until the revs come down after a cold start to drive it at all. 30 seconds may or may not be sufficient for this to happen.
In colder weather I can see 30 seconds to not be long enough, but definitely not as long as a used to be warming it up for sure.
Yep! In my st i wait till it drops after the cold star takes maybe a minute max
Thanks brother. Your casual use of humor is appreciated

Yeah the big manual covers the Focus in general. If you refer to the ST supplement, it says nothing about cold weather, at least on my 14 it doesn't. So sorry to hear about your problems, don't give up on it, it is a really well performing car.
Thanks for visiting and commenting. I have not given up on it. In fact I am considering a tune for it. It is a really great car.
Thanks! The car is so fun. I couldn't stop laughing when test drove one.
Same feeling if you blow off an I/C coupling. Scared the crap out of me on my first audi 2.7T motor (bipipe popped off of a loose clamp)
It is very scary for sure! They need better clamps on these things.
Thanks for the reply. I also play. Currently I have A Gibson Explorer and a Flying V. Great videos.
EVIL 7 - Very nice guitars also!
Thanks for the info on cold weather and turbo cars. Of course my idea of cold and yours may not quite be the same because, FL.
Glad you got some information. Of course in Florida you don't have much cold, but when you do, you'll be ready!
Great video! I almost spit my beer all over myself because I was taking a drink right as you said "or peach wine coolers" Epic greatness!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it and made it that far into the video! Your comments are very much appreciated. It is very nice to be considered as such.
Make sure she's warm before you jump on her haha
Great video SD! Accurate information and fun throughout. I'm new to your channel and enjoying your videos. Godspeed!
Thanks for the compliments! Glad you found them and found some good information and had some fun along the way. God bless!
one winter i had to drive my vr4 in winter.
Hilarious video, glad to hear your problem was minor.
Thank you! Glad you liked it! It was a very minor problem, although to be honest it happened a couple of more times. At least now I know how to fix it myself.
Cold weather is fine for summer tires. However icy or snowy driving should be done with winter tires
Regular summer treads can be driven in the cold, but performance summer tires should not be driven below 40 degrees. www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=273
good advices :) I often drive at night or very early morning 4-5 am in winter when the temps go below 44.6 I put winter tires on, summer performance tires become very stiff and loose all grip, fyi I got out one morning to "see" what kind of intake air temps I would have....instead of my normal 23psi@3500rpm I had 30.45psi @1600rpm O_O also my air temp at the engine was 26°F yikes (between 14°F and 5°F outside) very cold air temps can definitely overwhelm your boost control so watch out for that ;)
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you got something from the video. Thanks for the good reminder as well. All important information.
Great Video man deff taking some things with me lol sick ST btw ...
Thanks for the compliments! I'm glad that you found the useful. Glad you like the car. Hopeful it improves with time.
If your driving that car after 30 seconds on a single digit day your destroying the turbo the oil is way 2 thick 2 lubricant the turbo properly
Dude you're hilarious. keep it up I enjoyed the vid
You are too kind! Thank you! I will be uploading new videos soon!
My Fiesta ST is put away during the winter. I drive my Toyota Echo in the winter
Smart! I have to get the winter tires, mud flaps, and Weather Tech mats installed soon because I use mine all year. Must be nice not to worry about it!
Yea well responsible people would call me a idiot for buying a car and not driving it daily.
That was the funniest automotive learning experience ever. "Cool" job!
I am glad you enjoyed the video so much! I hope that you got some information out of it as well. Stop back soon!
I can't tell if he's really sarcastic or just really goofy but I enjoyed it xD
Thanks dad this was a good video.
You're welcome son!
the same thing happen to me when I was delivery a Hyundai genesis 2.0 turbo car to a dealer ship.. was on the boost a lot that the hose pop off. i thought the same thing you did, that I blew the turbo up.
Another nice vid man! I think a “welcome to the family” is in order for me. Just picked up 2018 ST2 a few days ago. 😜
Thanks and welcome to the family! You got yourself a wonderful vehicle!
cold weather is the best for a turbo once its warm, cold air is much more dense causing much easier boost building capabilities, so the turbos work less. the cold wouldnt destroy a turbo
That is true! The cold made the hose come off the turbo, which rendered the turbo useless. It is all good now. Thanks for letting me know!
Speed Deacon no problem !! Wonder what caused the hose to fall off aside from the cold cause just cold shouldnt do that
The dealership was thinking that either the clamp was broken or was not tightened all the way. It was good enough until it got cold I guess.
Curious what that "Beriang" clamp looks like. Top notch service notes.
I think Mister Thumb-Tighten has worked on my car and the cars of about a hundred others who had the same problem. Thanks for giving that man a name!
Haha.. funny.. I thought I did a lot of research before getting mine, because.. Ford.. but something always seems to come up. Still, I love my ST2.
My Focus ST has been a very good car and may end up being my favorite car. Very few problems overall. I love driving it. Hope you enjoy yours!
lol man good stuff good tips on carbon fabor parts also
Thanks! Glad you thought so much of it!
Hilarious, dry delivery. I live in California but definitely will think about warming the car up via oil temps + getting a fire extinguisher + first aid kit + blanket.
I'm glad you found it funny and were able to find some takeaways from it.
Not sure it was all due to the car wash? Most of the water sitting near the turbo should have evaporated even with the relative windchill, which may have been partially shielded because of all the components and panels in the way...
You are funny, very informative, thanks!
You are so kind! ...and you're welcome!
Well it's mid winter here in Australia and currently a very chilly 62°f. 😀
Make sure your wires are connected and used as a slingshot for my like! Great job!
😅 I actualy live a place were it hits -35 in the winter. So you cant accelerate to fast when it's-25 or below?
Be very careful. That is wicked cold. Where do you live? It sounds brutal at times in the winter!
And never shut down engine after moderate to aggressive driving for at least 5-10 minutes as a cool down.
Thanks! This is very important information that I should have included. Especially when at the track and when you have a turbo.
Speed Deacon heck yeah I'd love to see a video on that! I've seen a few STs around these parts that have it blacked out and think it looks really cool
I will do that. Look for it soon.
Pittsburgh guy! Good to see a local.
Landon Lupfer - Thanks! I'm sure your going to love it. It is a great vehicle.
Reading the manual with 3d glasses should have helped!
0-0 They look goofy and you can't see out of them! It's just like not reading the manual!
Sorry but just to add to that it was during the summer time that it happened to me haha
Thanks for the information! I'm pretty sure they put regular clamps back on it. I will upgrade to something better.
With it happening to you in the summertime, I definitely need to upgrade the clamps!
amazing video it was super funny and i learned a thing or two.
Thank you! I am glad that you got something out of it. I learned some things and I thought I would share them.
Focus st turbo push 19 to 21 lbs of boost.... that's a whole lot! ... more than any turbo fusion
The Fusion gets 250 hp compared to the Focus ST 252 hp, so it has some boost.
What did you end up doing to fix the situation ? Also do you think you can drive the car without the turbo?
Great video my man! 😂
so many people treating their turbo cars like an normal Automatic.
I've got a 2010 version the handling is really bad front end way to floaty suspension seems OK is this just a common st problem
The SG is safe.
dude u poped the charge pipe
Yes. It is all fixed now.
Im the 100th subscriber :D
Thank you for visiting and subscribing! I wish there were exciting prizes available for you, but it will have to wait for now, I guess.
The videos are enough of a prize :D
Thanks! You are too kind. I'm glad that you were subscriber 100!
This is amazing
Thanks for your comment! Stop back again!
Ta iam going for it come spring . Iam on the mr300 . And the.lower mount turns the car into some thing better tork streer . But you say you dont get wheel spin just grip
All grip. It will change your life! Seems like I'm kidding, but I'm not. It's that good.
Lol . You have got me buzzing now
When you say never race in cold weather... do you mean even if the car is already warmed up? I love giving it some gas at night on a colder California night
He means the phyiscal engine being warm , due to the fact that turbocharged needs to be warm to work properly . Having the car shut off over night for 7 hours and starting and ripping your rpms you will damage something
lmfao "chasing evos" I don't know if I want to be looking at tail lights all the time!
Actual ST 0-60 is 6.4 sec. and on a prepped sticky track.
Surprising your warranty was covered after modifications ?
Modifications from the Ford Performance catalog and installed by Ford are fully warranty!
Howd you get the nav on your display. Mine is an ST2 and doesnt have nav. Cant figure out how to get it
You need the have an ST3 to get the nav, I believe. At least when I bought the car they said I had to have the ST3 package to get the nav.
Ahhh shucks! I found the way to get google maps on there, but for some reason my phone has to be connected via usb. Better than nothing i guess.
Thanks man!
You're welcome....although I didn't help much, if at all.
where did you got that ford performance sticker????
I found it on Ebay.
www.ebay.com/itm/FOCUS-ST-RS-FORD-PERFORMANCE-WINDSHIELD-BANNER-VINYL-GRAPHICS-STICKER-FIESTA-ST-/302281954587?var=&hash=item466168951b:m:mOVd7JweY7r5URyQNnNqSKQ&vxp=mtr
The seller ships fast and well packaged. It is less than $25, which I think is very good for such a quality and licensed product. It sticks perfectly and none of the letters have come up on it anywhere.
I want that ST hoodie so damn bad, Were did you purchase it at?
TB Freshness - CJ Pony Parts. www.cjponyparts.com/hoodie-pull-over-black-with-red-st-logo-x-large/p/CJ1520X/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwZPNv-K-2AIVQy-BCh2TKwNNEAQYASABEgJCGvD_BwE. It is quite reasonable in price. They have a matching T-shirt as well.
I laughed when he showed the burning vehicle picture again 😂
Hi speed deacon how are things going with the diff you fitted .
Ouch. That sucks big time.
Sucked bad at the time. All good now.
Speed Deacon did they warranty it?
Full warranty. Charge $0.
Speed Deacon that's awesome! I just got a 2017 ST after trading in my Mazdaspeed 3. Looking forward to driving this car and modding it while keeping my warranty. I'm familiar with the platform already too so that helps.
What area of the country are you from?
I live outside of Pittsburgh, PA. Congratulations on your purchase and thanks for visiting!
It is so tight now I don't think it will ever come off.
time to ditch the k03 and go big turbo :)
YES! YES!
Speed Deacon Allentown PA
I love this guy 😆 🤣
Cars warm when the gauge is in the middle hud
The coolant is but not the oil
The car is completely warm when both the coolant and the oil gauge are in the middle position. Any less and your running the risk of your coolant still being icy. Especially in cold places. The car loves the cold but it doesn’t like to be frozen. Be nice to her
big dork but funny lol
just picked up a fiesta ST! so your title got me scared
"Big dork" - My wife 100% agrees with that! Sorry to get you worried. Enjoy the Fiesta ST! It is a really nice vehicle. I liked it very much, but my wife thought it too small. Just watch the hose clamps on the turbo. Others have had some problems with them staying on as well.
thanks for the tips. mine only has 700 miles and noticed how loose they were and tightened them
I hope all goes well!
Speed Deacon thank you sir look forward to more ST videos
You're welcome. I will put more after a brief vacation.
did you just blow the charge pipe off
The intercooler hose from the turbo to the pipe blew off. But it drove like it was gone.
I thought it was gone. Long gone. I thought that I blew it up and once they checked the electronic black box and learned how I drive the thing there would be no warranty either.
This guy is hilarious....
Thanks!
Make sure she’s warm so you can start chasing evos 4:07
Don't use oil that's too thick for your climate with a turbo car. Problem solved. Oil not circulating well in turbo=blown turbo.
Thanks for the tip! Thankfully it was not a blown turbo, but simply a loose hose on the turbo.
Do move to California so you don't know what snow is lol
YES! YES!
Speed Deacon But cali smog laws... and piss water "91" octane..
MannyFresh1x its the same as your 93 its just labeled different
been there done that! you are correct in saying what a shit box once to snail stops working. but how that feeling once you get home and realized it's just a pipe that's popped off, you cannot wait to get back out to boost that bitch again.
And don’t chase evo’s in this. Your gonna see a bunch of taillights
A funny dude ...
Thanks!
Oh, you didn't blow your turbo, your intercooler hose wasn't clamped tight and fell off...
Unfortunately it wasn't as exciting as it could have been.
I was recommended 2min mmm who kbos
Make sure you change your name to Slow Deacon.
Dawdling Deacon has a better ring to it.
lol i love your channel brother
Thanks!
Sorry but you start to beat on your car too soon. Be patient it’ll save you some money
lmaooo
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed it!
😂😅😅😅
I'm glad that you watched! I hope that you enjoyed it.
Pmsl
I hope you enjoyed it!
your car committed suicide because it belongs to a 15 yo girl not a 60 yr old man
Hahaha! That explains I!
Speed Deacon buy a real car if u want performance.
Says the one with a junky old cobalt. Like those aren't teenage girl cars LOL. I was expecting some kind of v8 or something, but you're just hating because these focus's are miles ahead of your generic motors special
This shouldnt happen lol
I agree. It shouldn't happen. At least the charge was free and it helped me learn to be more careful in the cold weather.
John Gillis actually YES it should happen. I'm actually shocked at the amount of people that don't know how to treat turbo cars in cold weather. Not trying to be mean at all either.
It did happen and it was my fault I admit. I learned something from it for sure. Thanks for looking and for commenting!
Pittsburgh guy! Good to see a local.
Thanks! Thanks for watching!
