  • In this video we install the sickle bar mower to the Farmall Super A for the first time. It took a little ciphering to figure it out, but once we got it on it worked great. The end of the video has some great shots of the sickle mower in action.
    If you're looking for how to install a sickle mower on a tractor hopefully it helps out.
    Sickle bar mowers were used on many types of tractors including International Harvester Farmall, Ford, Allis Chalmers, Massey, John Deere and many others for cutting hay and trimming fence lines and cutting ditches. They were a very popular implement for old tractors on small farms.

    Thanks for posting your video. I could have used your information when I mounted mine. I mounted that same sickle bar mower on my Super A. My maiden mowing was much more dramatic than yours. I set out to mow the tall grass and weeds growing at the top of a drainage ditch. I thought I had tightened the belt coming off the PTO tight enough but found after about 30 feet of travel the cutters grabbed a clump of weeds without cutting it. This not only stopped the cutter it caused the tractor to make an immediate right turn into the ditch faster than I could step on the clutch. After hauling the tractor out of the ditch I replaced the V-belt with a wider belt of the same length and tightened it using a hydraulic jack. I had no drama after that but never had much luck ditch weed mowing because my tractor travelled to fast in first gear to manage to cut well.

      Oh man that must have been a hairy situation. We run the Super A at high speed in first gear to get the sickle bar fast enough to keep up. That would be necessary when cutting hay, but for cutting ditches a slower speed would be safer. I'm wondering if changing the pulley size would increase the cutter bar speed to allow for a slower drive speed? Here's a pulley calculator that might be handy: www.blocklayer.com/pulley-belteng.aspx
      Thanks for watching Robert.

    I like this set up instead of when it is mounted behind the tractor. You have the right size tractor for this job. Those metric adjustable wrenches as so handy. Three mechanics to held put it together makes the job go smooth. 😎😎😎😎😎😎

    My grandfather had his sicklebar mounted to the back of the tractor easier to mount and dismounting also was used for hay plowing snow and grain wagons

    Loved your videos about your Farmall then your Sickle mowing attachment. I find it vary Interesting, as I live 30 yards from a nice beach in North Essex In the UK, and never worked on a farm in my life except a small holding that family once had, when i tried to fix the clutch on an old David Brown tractor.. I smile when I see you guys that must have modern do it all farming tractors now, but find love for old traditional tractors that just chug along happily as they did many years ago.. We can never forget our pasts eh.. Thank you all.

    Love your old Super A and sickle bar mowing machine. I used to use one just like it on Grandpa's Cub and it was very handy cleaning up side ditches and around the edge of fields ect.

    We have one for an A. Its great that you dont have to keep looking back. We now have a 59 inch woods belly mower on our Super A. Just posted a video of it on our Channel. We got a bargain on a 301 JD that has a mid mount live pto hyd lift sickle bar. It can mow from below horizontal to straight up vertical. Uses a lot of Gas,

    Good job. Great video! I got mine about 30 years ago. Took me half a day to put it on. Biggest problem was getting the belt tight enough. Thanks.

    I got a kick out of hearing the "metric standard wrench." Years ago, I got my co workers at a previous job to start calling crescent wrenches the "metric standard."

    I mowed hundreds of acres of alfalfa and brome grass as a kid on that exact setup. I think you need to speed up your ground travel so that the hay falls backward over the sickle bar, also the mower head should be right on the ground or very close to it.

    curious if the teeth in the sickle bar are unique to Farmall or if they interchange with more common sickle mowers like the NH 451?

    Does a Super A have the same sickle bar mower as a Farmall Cub or they're two different sickle bar mowers ??

    • @CountryFamily
      @CountryFamily  3 роки тому

      Hi Steve, from what I understand the cutting bar is the same on both but the mounting brackets are different.

      The drive belt on ours is a B45. Thanks for watching Lee and good luck with yours.
