- These pastures need a haircut! Today I'm out clipping pastures with the Farmall H and the International 120 sickle bar mower. There are several benefits to clipping pastures, including getting dead grass onto the soil where it can decompose, limiting the spread of weeds, and promoting pasture regrowth. Plus, it's fun to work the old equipment!

Putt putting along on my old Ford tractors is about the most relaxing part of my day, whether it is freezing or blazing hot. There is something inherently relaxing in the rhythm of the old workhorses continuing to do their job close to 80 years later.
When you came off that field and geared up that tractor on the highway, the sound of the tractor going faster brought back sweet memories for me as that was the sound of coming home from bailing in the heat! Thanks!
Absolutely! I’m now 63 and the sound of the farmall going into the road gear was etched into my memory as a kid. That sound always takes me back. Same with the sickle mower.
@@donnebes9421 Yes, obviously etched into my head too. Hay bailing period is something I'll never forget. Straw bailing was much better as straw bails were very light. Ahh, the good old days. When I listen to "The Farmer Song" by McLaughlin it brings tears to my eyes. "Dusty old farmer, out working the fields, hanging down over the old tractor wheel....." You have a fine day wherever you are! (I'm in BC Canada)

My husband is 76 and retired and still works outside most of the day on our property. When asked how he works so hard he says " are you kidding ? I've never worked a day in my life! I'm playing out here in the dirt with my big boy toys!
having swallows and other birds fly behind a tractor as you mow is a sign of good ecological stewardship of the land. Very nice!! For those who don't understand, there are plenty of insects hopping, jumping, flying etc out of the grass and birds are feasting on them. If one were to use pesticides, the field would be sterile without life and no bugs for the birds to feast. Its just another sign to tell if the farmer is practicing holistic management of the soil.
Best part was watching the calves frolic behind during the closing ❤️❤️❤️
Gotta love the image of a farmer taking shelter under a tree in the rain. something I have never had the experience of, having always had cabs or at least a roof on our tractors. Definitely had it tougher those old timers!

Side note...
In my youth I worked at a country club on the grounds crew. We had a couple older gentlemen that worked with us mainly mowing the rough and fields bordering the golf course. They would use a sickle bar mower for the tall grass fields. Well one day old Pete, yes his name was Pete, had is most favorite hat in the while world blow off his head due to the wind and wosh right into the mower it went.
He came back all upset and said" I ain't never running that thing again!"
We almost died laughing.
When you pulled out on the highway, shifted into road gear and eased out in the clutch… man that muffler sound took me back to driving my grandpa’s Farmall 140. I could see me with the cultivators and side dresser on it heading to the other farms to plow tobacco. Great memories for hard work and a sore neck. But I loved it.
The H with a sickle mower, seems rhythmic and peaceful and gratifying! Awesome!
Ya gotta love a Farmall H. One of the greatest tractors ever built in my opion....we have 2 on our farm...my great grandpa bought our oldest one brand new
We have two swallow nests above the front door into our house and they are great at keeping salesmen from ringing the doorbell! Amazing little hungry birds. Another great video.

Talk about a trap down memory lane. When I was a kid my dad would have me take the old international 140 with the sickle bar and trim the pastures to keep the summer weeds from seeding. Being 12 and turned loose without adult supervision was the best thing ever. Sometimes I miss the farm and other times I dont.
at the end of video the calves were running and playing. really another great vid. reason 6 is it's relaxing to run the tractor.

I have been a machinist for 32 years now and go back to the farm mainly in the fall to help where I can with harvest it kinda make you feel complete or makes you appreciate what you have

Pete,great to see you mowing with sickle mower. It looks like a fine job and it's great to see the the old equipment in use. Back in the day we had a quick hitch sickle mower on the 560 IHC FARMALL,cut all the alfalfa hay for baling with the IHC 46t baler, memories of past years.

I enjoyed this one because it reminded me of our Farmall M, some 6 or more decades ago. I had forgotten that Farmall sound, the hydraulic rod control and what it looked like from the seat. Dad mostly drove that while I was on the "B" or the Oliver 77 (or was it 770?, long time ago, my teen years.

my wife lovingly and jokingly tells her brother that I LOVE mowing. And she's right. since we've gotten our two acre "forever home" and we've had a REALLY wet spring and summer to this point, keeping the two acres mowed with an old Craftsman 42" mower requires at least weekly (if not more often) mowing. Wait ten days and it's a foot tall!! Love your vids and commentary. Keep em coming. Listening to you mow (and tell jokes) is the next best thing to being out there doing my own mowing!

Hey Pete. Get yourself a Chestnut Tools Wrench extender. It's a handle that clips onto most wrenches and holds them in place with magnets. Much safer and comfortable to use than linking wrenches together. They are not too expensive and they will prevent your hands from getting hurt. I keep a couple of them around the farm so there's no excuse not to use them.
I enjoy all your videos for having a great day my wife is having problems but I love your old equipment and the cows how they are so demanding and yell at you telling you to hurry up. Keep up the good work.
Clipping pastures sure make a lot of sense. Pete, you are a wonderful inspiration using sensible farming operations. You have a good looking 30 acre farm with wonderful animals.
Got to love a narrow front. Only time I would take a wide over a narrow is if it has a loader on it. Also got to love the sound of a sickle

Swallows certainly are precision fliers. I watched a pair of them fly over the calm waters of my pond; They swooped in at 30mph, and dropped their bottom beak into the water, to make a line 15 foot long, whilst they caught some insects.

I have a tiny 2ft long sickle bar mower I got for my garden tractor. I need to make a 3 point adapter for it so it lines up with my motors belt pulley. Won’t be as effective as the 40in mower deck but I think it will be a lot more fun.
I find it amazing that you can make enough money to live on 35 acres. My Long family farming story ahead as you awoke the farmer in me.
My interest in farming comes from my Grand parents farm and the joy of everyday on the farm as a kid. But my joy was only as a result of no responsibility. Just fun! My poor Granpa wrote to my parents and they grain farmed on a section of land and starved financially. He was racked with worry. At one point in 1940 the steam tractor loan from 1910 was a lein on the farm. He broke land for the railway creating custom farms for immigrants coming to Canada. The compound interest caught up to him in 1920s and far exceeded the value of the farm as he could not pay for 10 years. Can you imagine the interest they charged. No farmer made any money for 12years everyone was broke. No building was ever painted. Enough cattle ,chicken to be self sufficient. But during the 1930s nothing grew. You starved! My wonderful Granpa had a steam certificate so he worked on oil rigs 400 miles away. The family moved there and lived in a non insulated grain shack that my Granpa skidded on to the land close to the oil rig. They lived at the level of an animal, when I see the pictures, but everyone lived the same. Nothing new til Granpa traded his much loved horses for a Ford tractor which changed their life. The horses were loved but were so much work. The tractor was so handy and fun. Why the local Ford dealer helped my broke Granpa can only be put down to long term friendship and the horses still had good value.
At one point every farmer was broke and leaving farming over debt from 1930s. The provincial Govt. passed a law that saw all farm debt revalued on present farm appraised value. My Granpas farm was worth 3000 in 1940 for the land he owned at that time which was 160 acres, and had 40000 of accrued debt from taxes, interest mainly.
The debt was wiped to value of the farm and saved the farmers. Their payments were based on farm production. The 1940s saw everything change it started to rain and the war came. Everyone won except the Banks that were gouging the farmers with crazy compound interest and late charges that were enormous. Of course the stress of farming caused most farmers to die young. Most died from heart failure caused by extreme stress over the years. Then like the Beverly Hillbillies they discovered huge oil reserves in the province and everything really changed.Eventually Granpa bought a 1/4 section for each boy so they would have a farm, but oil paid too well and they all left the farm and lived in the City. But as they aged the life on the farm was remembered with great love. The pain was forgot. They all tried to get back farming. Two of the brothers did go back farming. Much different times and no debt.
I really enjoy watching you tell your story and all the old equipment that you use. I think farmers/ ranchers are genius businessmen now. My Grandfather was a great man and survived holding on to his Christian faith. God Bless You!

Pete, I always wondered about this when I would see a half-eaten, half-trampled field. It looked messy to me and I always wondered if farmers ever trimmed it down. This is very gratifying to know that my instincts were right. Another win! It satisfies those of us who like a good-looking field.

Yep Pete another great video. I"m 78 and past my time in the fields (used to be a Hay Dealer) so like watching someone else do all the work and actually enjoy doing it. spent my share of time on the IH line. That H purrs like a kitten, it hard to tell who is more content you or the tractor!. I love the drone shots too who's controlling it someone else or you? The drone shots five a really good perspective of what you are doing with each field. a lot of views might not know what you are up too, so one picture is worth a thousand words as the old saying goes. Thanks for dong them and can't wait for the update on the M.

I use and love to watch a sharp sickle bar mower. Pete , weather permitting, you could rake that and give your small square baler some exercise. You would be surprised how many bales you would get.

Good afternoon Pete, and I will bet that old H is so fuel efficient you don't have to refuel all day. And you don't have to make a payment at the new IH dealer. We have some local farmers that owe the John Deer dealer their whole crop and have to work a factory job to make up the difference. Take care and enjoy your lifestyle. Great video.

That camera editing is a wonderful thing you hook that mower up in like 2 seconds it always took me 2 hours it seems like to hookup those type mowers.
