  • Fantastic Train Variety at Preston:
    Regular and unexpected trains
    Class 805, 47, 66, 70
    05 March 24
    A year since my last visit to Preston station. More freight and unexpected workings than I expected! A bright sunny day too! There was an ironic announcement playing for much of the afternoon - it can be heard at the very end of the video!
    A Class 805 running under test from Euston to Lancaster.
    Two 3-unit sets of 156s being transferred between the Cumbrian Coast and Heaton depot - and vice versa.
    Two heavy stone trains from Shap.
    Class 70001 with a driver training run.
    Class 47 from West Coast Railways bringing an empty excursion set back to Steamtown at Carnforth
    Three northbound intermodals
    The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.

    Very interesting selection Leslie. I've usually just passed through Preston on my way North when I lived in Cumbria

    Now that northern coaching stock move has to be the biggest Iv seen together 3 units coupled to together no wonder the driver was watching out the window as he crossed the points and I believe 3 units is the maximum that can be coupled together in one and as always Preston seems to be full of life with the passenger trains and the freight when it makes an appearance great video Les

      Those extra trains definitely added to the life! I must admit I've not seen 156 convoys as big. Thanks for watching

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways You'll need to come to EK Leslie! Class 156 3×2 car units run in the morning / evening and most of Saturday. (As Giffnock platform 1 is currently being rebuilt the line is limited to 2x2 units until the end of March - then the 3 x 2 will return 😊)

      @@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge I thought it couldnt be that unusual. That line needs to be electrified!

    I don't know if it's your thing, but if you ever need an hour away from the trains at Preston to "decompress", there is a delightful park walk alongside the Ribble which takes you under the bridge at the south of the station.
    I discovered this in spring last year when the magnolias were in full bloom and the sun had got its hat on, and came out to play - and it was delightful. (Apparently it's called "Avenham Park", btw)
    Also note that I just saw "vin ordinaire" in terms of railway traffic, but despite that, I had a great day out from my usual stamping ground of Penrith!

      I've never been there to be honest. The wooden footbridge across the Ribble has a rail connection - it is a replica of the Lanacaster Canal tramway that connected the 'north' section in Preston to the southern section often thought of as being the Leeds & Liverpool to Wigan

    Certainly plenty of variety there. In days gone by I used to dread Preston station when travelling because of the daunting crowds waiting to board the - usually already busy - train. On my trip to Selby a couple of days ago that was no longer the case - in either direction. Mind you, all six legs of my journey were quiet - presumably that's why TPE were offering £1 tickets.

      Preston for me was Sunday Mornings seeing the soul crew heading north from their night at the Wigan Casino. Strange people. I saw your Selby vid - I thought about a transpennine journey by TransPennine but didnt want to risk a cancellation.

    Great to see that the loadings on the domestic intermodal trains are looking healthy now. Must have a day in Preston myself if that’s typical.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  5 місяців тому

      Well the extra ECS were not usual. The intermodals were full but check out RealTime Trains as there are a lot of paths no longer used.

    As an onlooker who knows very little about trains, why do the diesels pull more than the electric engines? Seems there's 2 electric engines if they get any weight?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  5 місяців тому

      The electric locos are either old and need the adhesion from two locos despite their power or they are relatively new and actually do run singly, having automatic controls to handle the load they are hauling.
