most of ancient hindu temples in java still represent pure hinduism, but hinduism in indonesia nowadays is not pure hinduism but it's a syncretic hinduism (balinese hindu and modern javanese hindu).

I would have more inclination towards odisha than south but as far as this temple is concerned it is based on South Indian pattern.

Dude, you should also mention on the practical reasons why these structures are built. Most of temples in those times have very intricate to complex irrigation systems and also methods to measure time on Earth or the tides especially for farming and the people's livelihood there.
I know the average person like you and me may not be an expert and you just travelling and having a lot of fun along the way but it would been interesting to know the reasons and work that go into places like this given the agrarian lifestyle and livelihood of the people around the region even today.

Syailendra dynastic family came from Srivijaya which conquered by Chola. They fled to Java and built Borobudur temple, Buddhist temple. In Java, they had rivalry with Sanjaya dynasti who Hindu and built Prambanan, Hindu temple.
Misleading
Shailendra is a Sanskrit combined words Śaila and Indra, meaning "King of the Mountain", It is also another name of Shiva. Therefore, Shailendra dynasty has to have Hindu roots, and later there was a division of the Kingdom after conversion of one Prince into Buddhism; who later built the Borobudur Temple or converted a Hindu Temple. The Buddhist Sewa Candi Temple has a stone engraved carving of Shri Vishnu Bhagwan at the entrance which gives an idea into what must have happenned.
Srivijaya was attacked by the Chola in 11th century. This temple was built in the 9th century.
There is no clear evidence yet, where did Syailendra come from. Most of the inscriptions and remains found in Java, very few in Sumatra.
Balaputradewa is a Javanese, he is from the Syailendra dynasty, the kingdom of the ancient Mataram era - Central Java. He became the king of Sriwijaya when he lost the throne in Java to his younger cousin. Balaputradewa continued the Javanese Syailendra dynasty in Sriwijaya.

To destroy the asuras in Patallok (underworld), Shiva created Kala Bhairava roop of himself, who I find is being called Batara Kala (Lord of underworld) in Java.
You will find Kala Bhairav outside most Hindu temples of Shiva and Vishnu, as destroyer of evil forces (asuras).
Also confirms that this Candi Sewu is a Hindu Temple and not a Buddhist one.

@@SinghRoadwayS - Very good. Keep it up. Only suggestion is that you should try to read at least a synopsis Shiv and Vishnu Puranas since majority of Hindu Mandirs outside India are of Shiva and Vishnu.
For us, Kashmiri Hindus, Kala Bhairav is a major deity (a host of our samskara/practices are for this roop of Shiva) since we are Shaivites (Shiva being Mahadev/MahaKaal or Purusha).

@@SinghRoadwayS You should also cover Borobudur. I have checked its images online. The engravings in the lower part of the Borobudur Buddhist Temple are based on Hindu religious scriptures. For example, one can see Sleeping Vishnu (the Supreme Creator, identified with his Gadha or mace, Lotus, Shankh or Conch, etc.) as well as Standing Vishnu along-with Brahma and other Devas (Indra, Vayu etc.) over cosmic waters. The Upper part has Buddha engravings. This also means that Bodobudur was originally a Vishnu Hindu Temple and later converted into a Buddhist one.

These are built by chola kings. Rajarajachola who built famous Brahadeeswarer temple at Tanjavur, India, captured java, sumatra, cambodia, Malaysia and indonesia. His son Rajendra chola was also a great king and built many temples.

As per the Balitung inscription of 907 CE, Sanjaya was the King of Mataram (Central Java) from 732 to 760 CE. The Siriwija Buddhist empire from Sumatra attacked the Ishara Hindu Kingdom (Central to East Java) and took over in 1016-17 CE. The Chola rulers from India were trade partners of Sriwija empire, and the latter's attack on Mataram led to War with Chola in 1025-1030 CE which was won by Rajaraja Chola. Thereafter, Sriwija empire became a vassal of the Cholas
Chola never ruled in Indonesia. Prambanan was built by Rakai Pikatan, the 6th king of Medang Kingdom. A local Javanese kingdom.

there was a buddha-siwa secte (sincretism between hindu and buddha) in java at that time.. so we can find buddhist temple with hindu architecture or hindu temple with buddhist architecture in java..
