  • After about 21 days of incubation, the hatching begins! This Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma californica) pair built their nest and laid eggs back in late March. Now with fresh chicks in the nest, these two birds have their work cut out for them.
    At the beginning of the show, a crow lands in the small tree only several feet above the nest, and the birds go crazy, making lots of noise and (not visible on camera) attacking the crow until they drive it away. The tree and nest are visibly shaken during this event, but all is well in the end. The rest of the show details how the parent birds care for their tiny, delicate hatchlings, and each other.
    Filmed with GoPro Hero3+ Black, Canon HF100 and 5D Mk2 cameras. Highlights from the series filmed 4-18-2015 to 4-20-2015.

    I have a nest in my yard right now. The parents love my birdbath. It’s so cute as I’m filling the birdbath from a distance they can’t wait and have to jump in. I love watching them and listening to the babies as they are fed. ❤

      They can be very entertaining, and even "friendly" if you offer them a worm or some peanuts every now and then... Just don't do anything near the nest that they consider threatnening, or they (the male in particular) will follow you around and squawk at you endlessly every time you go outside! XD
      Thanks a bunch for watching and commenting! =)

    We have a family of scrub jays that return to the same tree each year. We've recently started placing peanuts and a bird feeder to help both the jays and the other local bird families. Needless to say, they loved the peanuts and the bird feeders which is great given the harsh winter they went through. Now we have three fledgling scrub jays that hop and fly around our yard.

    A family of scrub jays moved in to become neighbors with me. I got a huge scrub beside my drive way (my car doesn't seem to bother the birds) and I got plenty of bite-sized fruits growing in the backyard which also provides them with a whole menu of insects. Unfortunately my house has also been visited by the full list of jay predators, from rodents all the way to hawks. To be fair, the hawk is probably the more endangered bird here, but I do hope my jays can avoid becoming hawk lunch.

  • @ryanforresterrenaissancesa4204

    They're now the California Scrub Jay, still Aphelocoma californica. They're in my back yard. I taught them to land on my hand for nuts. They come in the house, look around, take some nuts, then fly out the open door. I refuse to try and make pets out of them, though. One day, in the back yard, one flew up from behind me and landed on my head! They've also landed on my shoulder a few times. They are assertive (though respectful to us), very curious, and communicative. They are also very much individuals; their flying styles, communication, on-ground behavior differ from one to another. Some love to hop while others don't so much. They also understand the perspective of other creatures; some six feet away there was a nut on a table that a jay hadn't seen. When I pointed to it, the jay turned itself to gaze where my finger was pointing and saw the nut, then flying over and snatching it. We use gestures with them and they can get it. This year, they allowed newborns to interact with me before they were fully weaned. A very interesting bird.

      I, too have two scrub jays in our yard. One is very friendly, almost a pet, comes when I call onto the window where the French door opens (and sometimes even into the house where I keep the nuts and bird seed).The other is nervous and only wants the other to tell her that I've put food out. How lucky you were to get those magnificent pictures of them, the nest, and the babies being fed.

    What a great video. I feed both Steller and California scrub jays everyday. They’re so much fun to watch; corvids are such dramatic birds. I have tons of video to upload to my channel, just have to get around to editing it. I’ve been trying to get them to nest in the trees in my backyard so I can install a camera. Can you tell me what kind of tree this is? I’m up in the Sierra Nevada mountains so I mostly have evergreen trees around me but also have walnut trees and maple trees in my yard. Every spring both species bring their fledglings to my feeders so I know they’re nesting somewhere nearby.
    Thanks for the beautiful video, it really showed a different side to these birds. They’re so quiet and gentle with each other and their nestlings while at the feeders they’re loud, aggressive and entertaining. I love watching them bury peanuts on the sly, always making sure no other jays are watching. 😂🪶🪺🐦‍⬛💜

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching, and the nice note - I'm happy you enjoyed the show. The tree they've chosen here is a Scrub Oak, which is about 15 feet tall. I've also seen them nest in Privet and Pine. The nest is only about 8 feet up from the ground, which made it easy to slide a polecam up the trunk into position and strap it in place. More important than the type of tree is the cover which it provides. In every case, they've chosen a dense cluster of foliage which is well covered from the sides and overhead view, where hawks, crows, and Ravens are likely to see them from.
      You probably won't be able to encourage them to build in any particular location. However, you may be able to locate a nest by watching the birds for a while. In the spring when they first lay their eggs, the male will return to the nest regularly to bring the female food, and later, they will both come and go. They are VERY quiet around their nest, so they don't attract attention to its location. They even remove the chicks' poop and transport it elsewhere. If a predator comes very near the nest, you can listen for their alarmed squawking, which is distinctly different from their usual squawks at cats and other known predators in the general vacinity of the nest. Once you have a general idea where to look, just watch patiently to narrow it down. Good luck with your birds!

    Beautiful. The babies are precious and I love their little feet. In the last video, it appeared that Mama Bird was looking at the eggs quite a bit. I wondered if she was actually listening to movement inside the eggs. I could not remember when they were due to hatch. She won't be able to leave the nest now that the Crows know about the babies. Again, thank you for sharing.

      chihuahuabulldog I have heard that the chicks make sounds inside the eggs just before hatching, but I also think she was looking for cracks and chips as the little guys pecked their way out. Fortunately, I don't think the crow(s) spotted the nest, but the Jays weren't taking any chances! =)

    If one parent of a scrub jay dies does the other parent look after the chicks?

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  5 місяців тому

      While I have not actually seen this happen, based on the dedication each parent has shown in this series, I'd say the remaining parent would continue to do an outstanding job of raising their chicks. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

    Did Mom take food from baby’s mouth ad eat it? 5:58

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting =) Yes - the parents will move food back and forth between themselves and the chicks, looking for the right "fit". They watch carefully after inserting food into each chick's throat, and if there are any issues, they will remove it and try it in the other chick(s), or just keep it for themselves and try something else later. Very interesting behaviors, for sure. Cheers!

    What happened to the remaining egg? 🤔

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  Рік тому

      The 3rd egg never did hatch, and the birds took it away. Scrub Jays are very tidy nestkeepers, and take all evidence of the nest to far away places, so predators cannot locate the nest by looking for debris from the birds. Thanks for checking it out!

    • @JiveDadson
      @JiveDadson Рік тому +1

      @JCMegabyte A Scrub Jay visits me every day. He comes when he hears me practice my saxophone. I give him tidbits like peanuts and kibble. He eats a few before filling his craw and beak, and then flying away. I do not know where the nest is. He takes various routes back home. Stealth.
      He has no feathers on his head. He was like that when we first met. I suspect the red-wing blackbirds, but innocent until proven guilty.
      Lately (May, 2023) there have been two beautiful young jays flitting about, no doubt his offspring. Even though he will come right up to me, he shoos the young ones away. For a while, he buried food a few yards away for them to find. Now I think they must fend for themselves.
      I only saw his mate once, a few months ago. Pretty girl.

    did that parent take food back from the baby?

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  8 років тому +1

      +David Simmons Yes - I've noticed on many occasions that the parent birds will remove food which appears to be too large from one chick and give it to the other one. If, after several attempts, neither chick can properly swallow the food, the parent birds will either remove it and keep it for themselves, or try to tear it into smaller bits with the help of the other parent. It's fascinating to watch their behavior in close-up detail like this. They really do seem to know what they're doing =) Thanks so much for stopping by!

    I love Scrub Jays, but as with the beginning of this video, they are quiet noisy lol

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  3 роки тому

      They can be VERY noisy when there's a threat nearby, but otherwise they're nearly silent around their nest so they don't give their location away. Thanks for checking it out!
