  • This installment showcases highlights from footage filmed 4-22-2015 through 5-1-2015, using GoPro Hero3+ Black and Canon 5D Mk2 cameras. Scenes include lots of feeding, chicks growing rapidly, and even an invasion of bush-tits into the nesting area. The flock of little birds was so noisy and annoying that the female Scrub Jay hopped out of the nest and chased them away...

    Great shooting and the chics are growing rapidly. Some times it looks like the chicks may fall out of the nest, but I think we ill get a happy end. Thanks for sharing.

    I've enjoyed every minute of watching these videos since those chicks hatched.
    I was wondering how they got rid of that third egg that wouldn't hatch?
    Thank you so much for all the time you took to film the growth of these birds. We don't get them in Missouri. We get the Blue Jays.
    I'm just hoping they don't fall out of that nest in their zeal to get their food. My stomach sinks to the floor now that they are bigger. They just look like they're going to outgrow that nest (*_*)

      Afrikitty The 3rd dud egg vanished one night. I can only guess that the female either broke it up and ate it (like she does just about everything else in the nest), or carried it off somewhere to dispose of it. =) Yes they do seem like they could fall out of the nest, but check out those legs and feet - they can really hang on when they need to! =)

    💙 your music. I play this for my jays and they love it. Or maybe they love the lovely jay sounds. My male jay is a raucous noisy one. He's got to learn. LOL!

      I'm not sure how much Jays like any type of music (that might make a great experiment!), but the bird sounds in the soundtrack would definitely be of interest to them. When they're near their nest and there's no threats nearby, they tend to be VERY quiet and stealthy. However, away from the nest, or when a threat is nearby they can sure turn up the volume! Thanks a bunch for visiting and commenting!

    Hi, how did you fix your camera to the higher branch without disturbing the birds making their nest, hatching the eggs, and feeding their babies?

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  5 років тому

      I prepared the camera and mounting pole ahead of time and then waited for the bird to leave the nest. When she was gone, I quickly slipped the pole cam up into position and tied it to the tree trunk before she returned. When she came back, she noticed it and investigated, but after a few minutes she decided it wasn't a threat and completely ignored it from that point onward. To her, it probably seemed like a "normal" part of the tree since it never moved after it first appeared..

    More great footage! Baby birds grow up so fast. I enjoy watching them, especially as their feathers are growing in. What happened to the third egg? Toward the end of the video, did you give Mama Bird the worm? Thank you so much for sharing.

Yes - I deliver a worm to the mama bird every now and then when I visit the nest to make adjustments to the camera and such. It's a peace offering of sorts, and she does seem to appreciate it. =)

    Last night the damn cat pulled a fledgling out of the nest in my backyard. Managed to rescue it but it was getting dark out and I couldn't locate the nest. I grabbed a large stainless pasta strainer from the kitchen, put a hand towel in it and duct taped it to the tree. Put the little guy in it. Woke up at 5am this morning and even after hard winds last night it was still in it. Was very happy to see the parents returned! I found the nest, put the baby in it and saw there was another baby, much younger. All is well. Thank you for these great vids AND the music! Western Scrub Jays and me in New Mexico :)

      Lisa Colbert I'm happy to hear you were able to rescue the little guy =) Contrary to popular belief and for the benefit of others reading this - the parent birds are always happy to have their chicks back even after being handled by humans. The Jays I'm filming moved their not-quite ready to fly chicks after a cat started patrolling around under the nest. It was quite an event as they hopped across the ground to climb a tree at the new site! Videos coming... BTW the long version of these videos are on TheNatureStation channel in case you're interested. Glad you're enjoying the show and thanks for watching!

      These birds only had two eggs this time. In one other documentary I did, they had three eggs, but one never hatched and the mother bird eventually removed it from the nest.

    Scrub Jay's are terrorizing my dogs, the squirrels, and ruining our car mirrors and windows!! I close the car side mirrors and cover them, and the 2 birds get the covers off and/or still peck the covered mirrors! They are so scratched up! And they wake us up constantly. We have a huge loquat tree in our yard, it's as tall as our 2 story home, and they nest there yearly. Any suggestions on how to keep them from nesting in our tree?

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  2 роки тому

      Scrub Jays are normally very quiet and try to draw little attention to themselves around the nest, but will become very noisy and protective if anything they consider to be a threat gets too close. Squirrels and other birds will raid Scrub Jay nests if they get the chance.
      If a Scrub Jay nest is compromised or otherwise harrassed, they will consider the location unusable for future nests, and will move elsewhere, even scavenging the nesting materials from the old location to build the new one. They are also very quiet when building their nest, but if you can locate it while it's under construction and wreck it or otherwise disturb them before eggs are laid, they will likely abandon that spot.
      IF it's a REALLY big tree, they may just use a different spot in that tree, but they will usually will select a completely different location. They will continue to use the same site each season until it is no longer suitable.
      I never tried experimenting with mirrors to see if they considered their own reflections to be intruders, but it sounds like you've already answered that question! You might try putting a side-view-sized mirror somewhere away from your car and house, but still close enough to get their attention and draw them away from where they are hanging out now. Good luck!

    I love Scrub Jays and have a couple videos of my hand feeding one on my channel. They are such courageous birds with real personality. They are spunky and very vocal. In my area there are a couple of Coopers hawks nesting because of my bird feeders. The Scrub Jays are always on the lookout and when they do a certain screech all the other birds take cover because the hawks are near. This is an amazing video!....Great music too. I am sure you put in many hours editing and filming this. Thanks!

    Trying to rescue a baby scrub jay, tail feathers barely poked out. looking for the nest, can't find it!! How far up was your nest? Close by I have 8'-10' tall laurel hedges and then some trees nearby, can't see nest anywhere! Bird has minor injury, like it broke off some feathers on the wing tips. The local wildlife place euthanizes them if they are injured - I don't want this bird to have that fate. I have also read that if I care for it and then release it that it won't learn the language of the local adults and will be killed by them when it tries to join their group. Thoughts? Thanks for your loving video and for sharing it with us. I keep playing these videos to draw the birds closer and elicit peeps from the nestling.

      Nicole Lawless If the parent birds are still tending to the youngster and there's no imminent danger from predators, it's best to let the parents take care of it. Once they're feathered enough to keep warm, they no longer need a nest, and in fact are probably better off in thick undergrowth where they can be more hidden. In the case of the Scrub Jays here, the parent birds appeared to purposely move their chicks to such conditions even though they seemed totally vulnerable and couldn't fly yet. You may have to watch for a couple of hours to spot the parents, but odds are good they are still around. They're very stealthy when they want to be, and the chick will usually remain quiet and hidden until they come to feed it so as not to give away its location.
      If you're sure the parents are no longer around, then the only choice is to take over and rear the bird yourself, but that will of course have consequences. I doubt the local birds will kill it , but it will have to be taught to forage, avoid predators, then find its place in the local hierarchy and take its chances in the wild like all the other adult birds in the area. Good luck! =)

      JCMegabyte I've hung the bird in a basket where the feeder normally goes (in front of the kitchen garden window). Parents seems to be going to roof then down to the ground here seed was spilled, but not doing anything with the baby yet. I think the nest (if still occupied) is in the neighbor's yard. I'm going to relocate basket into laurel hedge and go sit in their yard for a while. It's sad to hear baby hungry, but I need him hungry so he will chirp! I have some earthworms at the ready. Thanks again!

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte  9 років тому

      Nicole Lawless Don't worry about the little bird making noise - if the parents know it's there, it will get fed. It may take a bit for them to visit if the little one is out in the open. They will watch from a distance to make sure it's safe to come in and feed - not just for their own safety, but also to keep predators from seeing. As soon as they can, they will try to move the chick into heavy cover, so moving the basket into such a place will give them a big head start and a safer transfer for the little guy. Even if this one is isolated from the nest and siblings, they will still come take care of it. =)

      JCMegabyte I have to go to work, so I'm bringing the bird and worms. I will be back out at 5pm and try to rig something high in the laurel hedge that's stable - it's super thick cover. Darn near broke my arms attempting to climb an ancient apple tree! I saw parents flying into the laurel hedge 2 houses down in the back. Could the nestling have made it 1.3 lots away? I could hear the birds when they were getting fed, so I know there's a nest there. And thanks for your help!
