I bought mine in 2000 for 115$. Mine must have belonged to a supervisor because it is in beautiful shape, clean and shiny. It does kick like a mule so I shoot the underpowered 308 in the 42-48000 range. I bought a no drill tap mount and a scout scope so its a nice little bush gun. It was my first milsurp so I'm pretty attached to it.

I love old Mausers, and mine does not disappoint. Its punishing with 308 WIN ammo and a steel butt plate, but I won't shoot any more thru it anyway being as I handload and prefer cast bullets.
Mine has the same issue with the barrel band coming loose. My front sight ears are badly bent so I removed them. Highly accurate, great shooting piece of history!
I also, have not seen anyone that has had one blow using .308 instead of 7.62. Only stories and rumours...

I’ve owned mine since I purchased it at BIG 5 for $89 in the mid 80’s. The quality of wood is excellent and a beautiful mature grain walnut. I did have to clean it up and sand it and refinish it . I wasn’t aware of the old system having only a two locking lug design, this explains the sloppiness of the bolt movement when fully open. The safety works but is stiff. I agree with the video that the sights are so-so at best . A friend of mine machined the rear sight and cleaned it up, this improved the sight picture significantly.
I have shot 1000 combined rounds of both .308 and 7.62 NATO over the years with no problem. Mine has the crest on the breech , I’m not sure if that is more desirable or not. Shoot ability is good considering it’s age and design, it’s accurate and robust. Yes it kicks , it’s a .308 !
These rifles are worth $300 to 400 today ( my opinion) when compared with other surplus rifles. Don’t hesitate to buy one and own a important piece of Spanish history. I will limit it to 7.62 NATO moving forward just to be on the safe side.
    Happy shooting .

Oddly enough these rifles didn’t finally leave service until the 1980s and were used not only as training and police rifles but were still popular with the Guardia Civil even after the adoption of the cetme (it being considerably lighter making long patrols much more enjoyable from what I’ve been told). It’s funny to me that the youngest possible 1916 was made in 1951.

Plenty of surplus military 7mm from back in the day was quite spicy stuff. 7.62 NATO or .308 WIN isn't a crazy amount of pressure for these actions by any means. And no, .308 is not "way hotter" than 7.62 NATO like a lot of people claim when this subject arises. They are comparing CUP pressure values to PSI pressure values and thinking they are the same unit. They cannot be compared or converted. .308 has a negligibly higher max pressure but it's meaningless when you consider the proof loads these actions took upon testing and held up fine to. There are also those that claim these are ONLY designed for 7.62 CETME rounds. No, the original Spanish military manual for these conversions specifically say 7.62 NATO. These rifles were extensively tested in the USA with hot proof rounds when they were first imported and they held up just fine. I looked into this matter very deeply and never could find a single credible report of one having any type of failure from any 7.62 NATO or .308 rounds. You can shoot whatever .308 or 7.62 NATO ammo you wish through one of these in good condition and it's never going to kaboom. They may not be 98 actions but they are still very very strong and well-made rifles. I have two of these rifles and have shot tons of full power .308 commercial loads through both
A compressed load of fast Bullseye pistol powder didn't kaboom the one in the linked video, even the hottest factory .308 round isn't going to do squat to one of these things.

I had one; it was not a fun weapon to shoot with factory 7.62; now, with cast bullets, it's a sweet shooter and hit correctly with the sights and had half the recoil. Only real beef most of them have crummy or cracked stocks, with hardware missing. I'd give a 30/100 compared to my other Mausers.

I have had mine for probably 20 years. I used it a couple of deer seasons. Worked great for putting them down, but the sights on this gun are terrible for using on a moving deer. Good shooter, I keep it around as a collector gun and a backup rifle at the hunt camp. And I did not know until watching this video about the pressure issue. I have always used .308 Winchester loads. No problems.

Bad sight picture! But for the age of the rifle you cannot go wrong. I bought mine 20 years ago for a hundred dollars. The first time I shot it the stock it cracked. The rifle would make a good deer rifle with a scope. The barrel is heavy so the more you shoot it the bullets do not spread bad. Modern hutting rifles in the 200 dollar range the more you shot it the more the spread of the bullets.

I thought these were dangerous? Its a small ring 93 Mauser action. The 7.62x51 is higher pressure closer to 8mm than 7x57mm. I would only shoot 7.62x51 surplus and not .308 commercial ammo which is actually higher pressure than military NATO ammo. 5.56 is opposite where 5.56 Nato IS higher pressure than .223. But .308 and 7.62 Nato is opposite.
If you want a cool rifle, get an FR-8. It's 7.62 Nato and a Mauser 98 action that's more appropriate. Cool bolt action with a Cetme flash hider. It was bolt action trainer for the Cetme. Peep sights also. I love my FR-8.
As far as the 1916, I maybe wrong but I've heard of people converting them to 7.62x39 with a sleeve. Now 7.62x39 that's a modern round that would be a lot easier on this than the 7.62x51 and more appropriate for the 93 action.
OR I would just find a 1916 or 1893 still in 7x57mm. There's still companies that make ammo for it.

@BattlefieldCurator I got one off Gunbroker 5 years ago, which is probably the type of place to look. Never see them at gun shows anymore. It's a great rifle and more robust than the 1916 and are actually 98 Mauser actions. Another thought about the 1916. They sell low recoil ammo out there or lower recoiling including .308. Probably lower pressure and safer to shoot in the 1916.

Pre M98's were proofed to 60,000 psi. So shooting these with 308's is the equivalent of using proof test ammo. Use 300 savage isf you reload. I have seen several blowups of these but these have been tken down. I would not shoot 76.62 or .308 ammo in these.

How this compare to a Chilean mauser, FR7 or any other 7.62 conversion?

    • @Toolness1
      @Toolness1 Рік тому +2

This is a great rifle and a well-made conversion. The Chilean conversion uses a chamber sleeve that can come loose. It's not really a safety issue, but doesn't inspire much confidence. My dad just bought a Chilean in really good shape, the chamber insert is nice and tight, and we checked it with a borescope. Some that are really shot-out can get gas cutting up where the insert meets the original metal and it can eat away at the solder they used to hold the insert in. So if you buy a really worn one, that could come loose on you if it isn't already. It wouldn't cause a kaboom or anything. The Spanish did a proper conversion and there's no worries with these, IMO even with hot .308 ammo.
