    Great video Steve, let me know if you ever want to hit Lake Wateree. That is where I am catching them on Wateree. I have also had to drop anchors and use spot lock to keep the baits in front of them longer.

    I think a pink and black jig would work well on that clear water I have confidence in color choices,.......and even think a solid pink jig would be good,but still and all enjoy the videos keep them coming and forget about the thumbs down.😅🙂🙂🙂

    I did well at Wateree a few weeks ago. Now, I want to go back but use my Hobie PA14 to try to catch them. Ive never done that before so it will be a new challenge. I was catching them in the river around 24 feet to 26 feet deep. I have not hit Montecello Lake yet, but after seeing this video, I think I might try it out.

    • @theoldfisherman2040

      That slider jig is not one that I like to use for vertical jigging, it seems to work better casting or swimming it.

    How would the old fisherman go about finding crappie this time of year without electronics?

    • @theoldfisherman2040
      @theoldfisherman2040  7 років тому +4

      Hey Garrett, back in the day, before electronics, we would build brush piles on drops, next to deep water in 20 to 30 ft. of water and vertical fish on them using minnows and jigs. The crappies will hang around drop offs, next to deep water or channels. Any brush are structure at these areas is where they will congregate in the Fall. Hope that will help. Thanks for watching The Old Fisherman.

      Steve Comalander
      I do the same in the lake I live on. Take a bunch of blueberry shrubs and tie them to a boulder and sink them on the drops and points where it gets deep. Makes cover for the fish, and gives the smaller fish a place to hide. It comes in handy durring ice fishing season as well.

      Hey Josef, I been fishing Lake Monticello since the early 1970s. I know about everything I think, about that lake, but I will tell you, the fishing changes every year. I am changes fishing techniques constantly, and trying to come up with new ways to catch them. I have used the mussel in the lake for bait and have a video doing so. Thank you for taking your time to watch The Old Fisherman videos.

    • @MrCountrycuz
      @MrCountrycuz 7 років тому

      I was talking about the trapdoor snails and not the mussels.
      The trapdoor snails are from Asia and someone released them in the lake.
      They are edible and are filter feeders. You can find them in the evening when the water is low. They are the size of a golf ball. If you ever want to come down to Augusta and take Me crappie fishing in Thurmond Lake, send me a message. I don't know the lake yet and I been running my boat up and down the Savannah River as I am 8 miles from lock and dam.

    ok think about this , you kept saying the fishing is not as good as it use to be , the female fish are full of eggs right now , but I think a lot of the problem is people catch them and will not put them back in the lake to finish spawning and reproducing. myself I will only kept the males at this time of year.

    • @theoldfisherman2040
      @theoldfisherman2040  7 років тому +5

      Hey Danny, there is nothing wrong with the way you think, but I have said it before I was raised to enjoy a crappie meal, and I have not caught a limit of crappie this year. I'm doing these videos and trying to teach people how to fish, with out making a dime. I have not caught but a few male crappies in Lake Monticello this year. I've also made it clear that the lake is full of catfish and white perch, which eat the crappie eggs. The big catfish also love the small crappie. That is why the crappies are getting out of the lake. Sorry I was not raised to go fishing and not come home with a meal. Sorry if keeping a few crappies to eat has offended you.

    • @partner348
      @partner348 7 років тому +3

      I have seen people who live on the lake (not this lake) go out and catch a 3 or 4 person limit, bring 'em back in and go out again. Although this is overindulgence, I never saw a decline in the number of fish I caught because of it. I believe other factors are at play besides overfishing when people can't catch fish. The lake I fish managed itself for eons, then the county decided to start spraying to control the weeds and that interfered w/ the natural fluctuation. All they did was create dead weeds that sank to the bottom and became fertilizer to grow more weeds every year than the year before that left an oxygen depleting mess on the bottom, and now they have created a monster that they HAVE to control, and the unseen damage to the fishery is acceptable to the people that just want a pristine beach in their back yard, and complain about how good the fishing used to be, and wonder why.

    • @DanielTPeace
      @DanielTPeace 6 років тому

      Steve, why fish if you are not going to eat them, me, I was taught not to play with my food. Catch and release I understand for fish that I personally don't care to cook. Large mouth bass come to mind immediately. I watch people throw fish back that I know would fry up nice, to me that is ridiculous.

    • @Z71Ranger
      @Z71Ranger 5 років тому +1

      Danny@ You better study up on the crappie spawning... If you keep the males you just killed the entire spawn from that female fish... You know why... The males stay at the spawning bed and protect the eggs and baby crappie fish where the female goes off to deeper water to feed and recover from the spawn... So you keep keeping the males and you want have many crappie to catch. With out the males no spawn will grow up to be adult fish... Our fish and game said keep the 10 to 12 inch fish male and female to eat and release all the other... Especially the 14 to 16 inch crappie...

    Hey Steve, I'm a midlands native and it's nice to see somebody fishing our local lakes and not just targeting one species all the time. To me it's so much more fun to fish for everything, not just striper and not just bass (though I enjoy fishing for those too). I've been trying to get into crappie fishing for quite some time and I was just up at Monticello with not much luck - probably couldn't read my fish finder. Should have watched your video first. Thanks

      Hey Sarah, I have owned several bass boats in the past, but now I'm fishing out of a 17 ft. Crestliner aluminum john boat with a modified front deck which gives me a bass boat type set up. I have a 25 hp Yamaha motor on it, which is great on gas. I am trying to keep it simple, to prove you do not have to spend a lot money to catch fish. Thanks for asking.
