- John Calipari almost said the right things to the Kentucky basketball fanbase in his final radio show of the season.
On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe discusses Coach John Calipari's comments about his status with the Kentucky Wildcats in his final postgame radio show. Calipari said some positive things about change, needing to get back to what Kentucky basketball used to be - physical, experienced, and winning. But Calipari also said some confusing and inaccurate things about his expectations for the upcoming season, the way he ran his staff over the last few months, and how he game planned for Kentucky vs Oakland basketball in the NCAA tournament.
Finally, Dawe takes a look at a transfer portal player the Kentucky Wildcats have reached out to: Rutgers Scarlet Knights basketball transfer Clifford Omoruyi.

We missed out big in the transfer portal this year , I remember when we missed narrowly on K.Johnson to Arizona and H.Dickinson to Kansas and as I watched them play this season and how both played good defense and brought leadership it hurt to think it was over a little bit of money that we had in the coffers , Cal needs to hit the transfer portal hard and get a few enforcers had someone knocked that guy on his ass early in that Oakland game all the sudden those shots aren’t falling imo but he didn’t respect anyone on our team.

Either he needs to be replaced or his entire staff needs to be replaced. He has nothing but older coaches that have never been successful on their own. How about he goes out and gets a few young coaches that are up and coming basketball minds. Get some analytical guys and then listen to them. Get a guy that is a defensive guru and listen to them. He needs to run this like football. Head coach, defensive coach, offensive coach, shooting coach etc.
Coaching was the biggest flaw and will always be as long as Calipari is there

If he would just say “I’m messing up, I’ve got to change some of my view points and some of the ways I approach coaching these kid’s,” then we could all move on and be ready for next season. But until he admits that he’s the culprit of the problem, and takes accountability and proves he can change his coaching for the better, than there’s no way we can push forward with him. Let’s make this clear, WE DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO FIRE HIM! We just want him to learn from his mistakes, and STOP doing the same thing year after year and expecting different results. It’s insanity!

What about the four seasons before this one? Also, he recruited these seven footers who weren't physical. Plus, he's the one that instead of getting the team in the gym after losing the first game in the SEC Tourney he took them to the bowling alley. This was all typical Calipari BS trying to add members to his cult, and trying to save his job. He needs to go NOW!

Just saw some cliff highlights, and this kid seems insanely fast for his height. Meechie Johnson also just entered his name in the portal, averaging 14, 4, 3. These two additions could be good in experience but I don’t see how we have enough room for returning players, new commits, and transfers.

He needs to bring in assistants to help with his weaknesses. He is not good with the X's and O's offensively. They were not good on defense. He is NOT a good in game coach. GET ASSISTANTS to help in these areas, or leave. If he doesn't fix this problem, it doesnt matter who comes to Kentucky. Its WAY more than getting in the gym. They need to know how to run an offense with more player movement to go along with the ball movement. Cal should have a few plays against the zone, especially against the 1-3-1, and he should practice zone offense EVERYDAY. Any smart coach will play zone against Cal in the tournament. I WOULD.

I've heard enough of Cal's excuses. I assume Cal has been using his best thinking to recruit and train gold standard teams the last four years. Unless Cal has experienced an epiphany of some sort to improved his best thinking, don't expect much to change.
Unfortunately, I agree. I don't think it matters if he gets more mature players in the portal. If HE doesn't make some changes, the result will be the same. Look, Jordan had Phil. Great players still need at least a solid coach. Get a good coach with great young players you got a "chance" to win titles, at the very least win one or two games in the tournament.
Cal will say whatever he needs to say to setup “hope” for the next season. We have physical players coming in next year. He’s a salesman it’s what he does.
Cal not having a proper coaching staff around him has been so glaring. It looks like they taught them how to do a few things on offense and just rolled the ball out there. The defense was completely lackluster due to lack of detail. There is a phenomenal basketball mind on campus by the name of Rajon Rondo who would be an absolute home run of a hire. If we are looking to prepare these teams to be pro's, why not bring in the ultimate pro. Someone who knows how to study film, execute game plans, WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. Groom that man to become our next head coach (per his most recent appearance on Bully Ball hes looking to start that path).
I concur but will Cal even listen to the real coaching minds during a game when you actually need to coach in real time. Tyler Ulis would have coached us to a W against Oakland if he were handed the reigns.

His time needs to he done here. 9-16 is unacceptable, losses at home to UNCW and Evansville are unacceptable, 3,4,5+ losses at home, are unacceptable, losses to 15 and 14 seeds, are unacceptable, Cal's record against ranked teams since 2019… unacceptable, Cal's champions classic record is unacceptable and his player favoritism is also unacceptable.
He is an awful bench coach and he coaches with a chip on his shoulder, that chip is his narcissism bleeding out, trying to show the fans who the boss is by trying to prove how right he is.
Now, he refuses to play his best teams. Each of the last 3 years he refuses to play lineups that every metric shows is, by far, his best lineup, but he refuses to play those lineups to spite fans and to cater to certain players.
This guy needs to be removed immediately, his goals are not what they should be. We are an NBA farm system first and that alone should get him fired.
Plus one of our biggest rivals is Tennessee and their .500 against Kentucky in the last 9 years... that should never happen..Tennessee doesn't have the players that we have which leads to a direct indication that Cal is leaning solely on talent and not coaching them the way they need to be coached..
@@scottbailey5364 proof is in the pudding. Look at how he builds his rosters, that's not what you would do if winning titles was the goal. You can't start over from scratch with high scool kids that have 'future' potential every year and expect to beat seasoned veteran teams. He lost 10 games with this loaded roster and it had no shot to reach the FF as we just witnessed.
You would only build your rosters like this, if stuffing your draft stats is the goal and that's all he does is brag about his NBA players and the new batch of prodigies coming in.
And he's going to do it again next year, he has 4 or 5 more freshmen signed and again, he'll play favoritrs with the wrong players instead of playing his best players. He played DJ and Edwards all year just to keep from hurting their feelings and raising their draft stock. He cares more about the draft than UK basketball. He needs to go now… .NOW.
I don’t mind being an “…NBA farm system…”. That just means we’re extremely competitive and successful. But, even with that, there needs to be a larger scale approach that satisfactorily addresses everything of concern.

But there are a lot of issues here that can't be debated.
1) this morphed into a players first deal, where individual goals and accomplishments were the priority, that is never going to work in a team setting, where you need to be a great team to win.
2) The game is more physical now, the days of trying to win with beanpole high school kids is over as we have seen the last 4 years.
3) Where are the John Wall's, the AD's, the Fox guys, the Randle guys? etc...? Where are they? We had 2 lottery picks in 23/24, but Cal chose to fulfill promises made during recruiting and that stymied the team's growth, he refused to play his best lineups for any length of time.
4) Today's players are ME-FIRST KIDS. Again, that isn't going to work.
5) in 2009, John Calipari said "If you aren't good enough, don't come here, I can't hide you". The last 4 years, it's been "That kid has parents, that is somebody's son, I can't take his heart.
6) When you have too many young guys, you have to simplify everything, your offense, defense, inbound plays etc... and you become extremely easy to prepare for. The game has a lot more parity today and the players are older, it's just not going to work and if you're constantly losing BECAUSE you're catering to the NBA and individual goals, like Cal has been, it's time to move on, you can't be doing that here at UK, go do that crap somewhere else.
Also, he claims he's "players first", REALLY? Is there a coach out there that ISN'T players-first? Is there a coach out there that doesn't want to see his players succeed?
How many players did Cal actually get drafted? Who wasn't going to the NBA without Cal's help?
Now, how many guys did he hurt? He didn't do Boston, Whitney, Skal, Edwards and DJ any favors, that's for sure, all he did was expose their flaws.
The guy can't coach, he's a glorified players agent that knows some basketball terms, but somewhere along the way, he decided he was going to completely focus on individual goals for certain players and hope that winning becomes a byproduct. How you lose 10 games with that 23/24 team, is crazy to me.

Biggest problem is Turnover rate of players each year…. It’s hard to be good every year where you have 70 to 90% of your team leave… players need time to develop over 2 to 4 years. When Kentucky had 2 to 4 players leave each year that had good teams every year, you returned a large number of the team each year. CAL works on Defense midway through the season to the end of the season THAT should be a Priority from beginning of the season . Kentucky would have two more championships if more players stayed 1 more year or at least Final for appearances , there is TO MUCH one on one plays need more pick and roll and screens mix in games . Kentucky has become a 1 year NBA training Camp.

Cal was at one time a great defensive coach I thought the best but in the last 8 years he has done nothing but lose in the NCAA tournament 1 game in 5 years he needs to be put on probation ether produce or get off the pot

All due respect, you are way off about the scouting report comment. Sounded more like the kids were in their heads too much before the Auburn game and he said just go beat them because you are better. Don’t overthink it, just go play. And that’s what they did, they went into Auburn and handed them their only home loss in a not so close game. Not sure why you are mad about a game we won easily. These are just kids, and some times you have to give them a mental break. Cal has been coaching kids long enough to know what they can do.
I don’t understand what happened I mean Cals first 7 years was as good of a stretch as any hall of famers best such span and then for the exact same guy to spend the next 7 years the way he has is just mind boggling, it’s almost like he lost his desire for the game or burnt out , he used to be a defensive guru now he doesn’t teach it and it’s more important in todays game with everyone shooting 3’s than it’s ever been , I’m not gonna lie I was worried when the tournament started because I don’t think we had any stretch this year where we won over 4-5 games in a row and when we faced teams that weren’t as good it’s like our players lost focused , I watched UNC a few days ago and thought how tf did we beat them and lose to Oakland , they have a real chance at winning it all and I think they match up with UConn better than anyone. I don’t know how to feel I can’t say I felt better when we lost to Wisconsin in final 4 or UConn in the title but I wasn’t as embarrassed as losing to St. Peter or Oakland I do know that. I’ll support UK regardless but Cal needs to wake up if he’s gonna be our coach .

not a UK fan but "anyone" who follows KY BB---like a religion...knows offense & defense...big men develop into their bodies...basically Cal TALKS as if he has been away & has returned to set things right...he literally cant stop "selling"
I believe the following all happened (as a perfect storm) or picked up steam 2020-2021:
1. 2018 - transfer portal opens. It didnt pick up full steam until 2021, but any program can poach really good experienced players.
2. 2019 - Cal signs lifetime contract worth $86 million.
3. 2021 - NIL begins. Now not only can you poach big name players, you can entice them with money.
4. Post COVID the college game changed. It was faster paced and perimeter oriented, like the NBA. Teams that could shoot the three, space you out, and get out in transiton, had the upper hand on athletic driving teams with a traditional big man.
What happens when all four happen? Big name schools are able to get players that are just as good as 5 star freshmen, but with experience. Teams made the change to the modern style of play, while Cal continued his stubborn archaic style of dribble drive. It exposed Cal from a coaching standpoint as he is now competing with teams that are just as athletic, more experienced, and offensively explosive than his teams. He cant just roll the ball out and win by pure athletic ability but can now be outcoached as the playing field is leveled. His teams struggle defensively because he is only accustomed to guarding the way his teams have played in the past. That is why he has struggled to adapt defensively as well.
Early post COVID he did get great experienced players in the portal that supported his archaic trafitional style only to lose. This year he did change by finding dynamic playmakers who can shoot, but they were freshmen.
I think it is a more complicated situation that most are thinking with variety of things happeming at once. And on top of that it is really hard to win the whole thing. However at UK, you ahould be competing on Sundays fo SEC championships and get past the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. This is UK basketball and that is the expectation. Not a hope. If you cant adapt and figure out ways to win as a coach, then someone else will.

I wonder exactly what happened with Cal and Robic. They’d been together off and on since his days at UMASS.
I think that is when the wheels fell off. I remember Robics daughter had some medical issues and I think he decided to be with his family.

Robic was the key to Cal's success. It hasn't been the same since we lost him and it is obvious. Kentucky has been completely unprepared for their opponents.
He has pretty much lost the broad based support of the average Kentucky fan. He has been given a lot rope than Tubby was, and I was in support of getting rid of Tubby. At this point, the reality of the situation is that it would be best for everybody if he was gone.

I’ve had time to think and I’m no cal supporter but unless you get the right coach you just can’t make a change cause a wrong hire could be another bully g and with the buyout they won’t spend the money to bring in a great coach

The only things he said that were new were that he wasn’t an expert on zone defense or a press defense and didn’t know how to teach them… he’s 65 years old and in the HOF and he’s pretending like he doesn’t know how to coach a zone or press defense. He needs to go.

This is something we should’ve been doing four or five years ago. Why is he just now doing it? We should’ve had strong veteran teams from the portal with freshman. Fast teams who could shoot the three and some size. It’s like we have to lose for him to figure it out. Something is not working correctly. Move on…

He’s got ONE Championship, he should have 3 or 4 with the talent that has come thru this program. Instead of bringing these guys along slow and developing them, he throws the. Into the fire and kicks them out the door at the end of the season. Then it’s next group up. You can’t compete against grown men with 18 year old boys. No matter how talented they are. Keep them in the program 2 or 3 years then let them move on. It’s not rocket science! He’s just not a good at X’s and O’s. Great recruiter, but it ends there.

Man I hope we can keep AB, Thiero and Burk. Thiero could be a key building piece on the defensive side of things and for rebounding. I think all the guards are gone. No chance for any of them except maybe Sheppard coming back for some unfinished business
Cal has never been a good in game coach ever. What does it matter though? His coaching comes from recruiting the best and having more talent. Would it be better if our coach was good in game but couldn't recruit? We ran Tubby out for that remember..
That’s more about just where the game was at the time, it became about recruiting and pure talent started having more success, where now there’s more parity and a well coached team can outplay talent. Ideal would be a coach who can recruit AND coach.

If we want to get back to Kentucky basketball quit recruiting one and dones, fill the roster with 3 and 4 yr players and sprinkle a one and done here and there.. stop recruiting 5 one and dones every year.. it doesnt work and the proof is in the results each year..
If you ONLY get older players, you will get the same result. I think you can win with one and dones. They just have to be well coached. Which might be an issue, i"m guessing. The offense must execute sets (particularly in the tournament.). If one or two players get hot, the offense needs to be able to run plays for those specific players to get touches. But have enough movement to utilize other talented players to keep the opponents defense honest. Tone should have touched the ball every possession down the stretch against Oakland for example. And since it is college ball, you must have a zone offense or two. Cause, uh, in college, they can and do play zone, just in case someone hasn't figured that out.
Defensively, the team was just bad. My high school squad was more fundamentally sound on defense than they were this year. Its not just about the players.
Really good HOF Coaches and their assistant coaches have scouting teams. As a tandem they use all data possible to find the pluses and minuses of their opponents.
During preparation they design a game plan to stop their opponents top player (s). There is a coaching strategy where a coach will allow a teams best player to score all he wants, but in the process HE CAN NOT allow the opponent to have two or three players to have their best game also. Well, unfortunately Calapari and his coaching staff allowed this method to happen during an entire season, thus the early out in the SEC and NCAA Tournaments.
Folks, if a coach can't watch film and develop a game plan to STOP just one player... he should be on a lake fishing.

Facts. The Committee has Cal figured out. (But, that is not hard to do.) Schedule them against an mature mid major team, with solid offensive sets and plays zone. Its a wrap.
Been a UK fan since the days of Issel and Pratt and Larry Steele, but this Calipari lack of bench coaching and player instruction bewilders me. If we get rid of Cal, does our recruiting fall off the planet. We just need Kenny Payne back to coach the bigs and someone Else to coach in game. That’s probably not feasible however.

That is one of the things that definitely ruined this year's team. All year Wagner and Edwards got undeserved minutes that could have gone to better players. For every 1 good game they had there were at least 5 bad games to go with it.

Hey I’ve heard a lotta fans say they hated him since day 1 , I’m on the fence on one hand we can gut the team and spend 35 m to let Cal go and another 10 on a new coach , no matter how good they are we know all Cals guys are going with him including his recruits on the team so the new coach would have to bring some guys and we have 0 NIL money because the 50m we just spent so we gonna have a team similar to Louisville this year and in the SEC so it’s gonna be a few years at bottom of sec and then part of me wants to say let’s fire him and rebuild and deal with that reality but either way we go it won’t be great. PS anyone who thinks Hurley will walk in and save the day he went 16-15 year 1 in big east and 19-12 in year 2 so if or when he gets us to championship aspirations it will be a few years at best

Shepperd definitely wouldn't if he decided to stay another year. I say it's possible the new coach could have 2 or 3 that might stay. It's also possible that the new coach also brings 2 or 3 quality players from his current team with him to UK. It's also possible he gets 2 or 3 quality players from the transfer portal. Which makes it possible that he could have a decent team his first year. I say my scenario is just as likely to happen as yours is.

Cals players follow him more loyaly than in coach in Cbb , I would love to see you get exactly what your asking for so I could come on here and watch you cry about what a train wreck it is again, Louisville is the most likely scenario because they lost their quality coach and were winning 25 games a year and when he went so did the program, they have been in a 5-6 yr rebuild already and they have more money than us without the Cal buyout , coach K is hailed as the modern day game goat and he didn’t win a championship with Zion , Redish ,RJ Barret or what about Self not winning with Wiggins and Embhid and I can go on and on about teams with great NBA talent that won but u don’t see Duke or Kansas whining about there pros they didn’t win with , I’ll be honest the way we cry I don’t blame the transfers I wanna play for us either and I’m shocked how hard it must be to get Cal to get these kids to come here , it’s starting, Coach K lost to Lehigh as a 2 seed had they fired him afterward they would have missed out on a championship or what if Kansas had fired Self after the Northern Iowa game 🤔 or Michigan state would they be better off if the fired Izzo .I don’t care what that do I don’t like losing either but I’m sooo happy the program don’t take advice from these comments I’ve saw so many people asking for 70+ pitino which is absurd , we do need a new coach but the answer isn’t as easy as the fanbase makes it sound yeah yeah hire this guy and we can relive the mid 90’s it doesn’t work like that .

I’ll say this. I’m not really for cal staying but if he’s gonna say, he has to bring back John Robic and Kenny Payne. Those 2 r valuable assistant coaches for him. If he’s serious about winning and turning this around, he needs to put his pride and ego to the side bring them back.

Remember, UK was in a bad place when Cal came in with Wall/Cousins. We were happy for what they did but, in the back of our mind, how did they not win. 🤷♂️ couple of years later they won with amazing talent and age. Then how did they not win with the platoons?🤷♂️ Then is slow declined each year. The signs were there the whole time that Cal can’t coach!!

Cal has literally averaged over 3 NBA draft picks every year at UK for 15 seasons straight. He's had teams with 3, 4, 5, and even 6 NBA draft picks on one team. Yet twice he didn't even make the NCAA tourney. Twice he was bounced in the 1st round. Twice he was bounced in the 2nd round. He was bounced in the Sweet 16 with 4 NBA draft picks. The Wall/Cousins team and platoon team were both loaded down with NBA players and both fell short of expectations. In 2019 he had three 1st round NBA draft picks and lost to lower seeded Auburn in the Elite 8. That's 10 of his 14 seasons at UK (2020 no tourney) where his teams underachieved. He owns the worst record ever in a season at UK along with several of the biggest upsets ever. He is 5-8 in the Champions Classic (1-3 against Duke, 2-3 against Kansas, 2-2 against Michigan St.).
I hope all of the whiners who say they are done with UK are telling the truth. Drama queens are detrimental to the program. Maybe some of the wine and cheese crowd in the lower level will sell their tickets to fans who are engaged. People who sit in the second row and don't even watch the game make me sick!
But, as a "fan who is engaged" are you satisfied with the last 5 years of tournament play? Its not like people don't have reason to "whine". Right?

The team with Oscar was a good team. That team had good pieces. Oscar was the player of the year!!! THE OFFENSE did NOT fit the team. A team like that with a player like Oscar, you need to run the type of offense that fits your players. Cal, didn't put that team in a position to be successful with the offense they were running. Cal has to get better at actually "COACHING".

One glaring problem and to me the biggest problem the elephant in the room is Cal can’t coach. Look out there and tell me what he is running? Nothing it’s you go make a play if you can’t pass it to somebody else. Everybody fell in love with Rob’s ability to beat his man but I was worried about him in March because when he drives he is not passing and that reared it’s ugly head just when it hurt the most. Also going this deep why doesn’t he full court press? The answer? He doesn’t know how. He also can’t beat the press. Against UT when they came back they pressed and we played like little league. Throw it in and hold it when they doubled it’s because he doesn’t know how to design an offense to beat it so we can talk all day about getting experience, more effort on D, blah blah blah but that’s not gonna help because he simply is at a disadvantage from the guy on the other sideline
So we are stuck for another year? Many fans are way past upset. Apathy is the next emotion. Just forget about it.

Can you trust anything that Cal says? He is a prolific salesman for Cal. What he says and what he does doesn't quite meet. His ability to coach in game X and Os is questionable at best. Just recruiting a couple of upper classman doesn't work as we found this year. What about injuries to either upper classman? I think Bam Adebayo was the last big he had that could occupy a spot but he couldn't shoot FTs. I as a fan, wish I could believe Cal's talk.
