Demon hunters are pretty much the witchers of Warcraft lore. Elite, specially trained, mistrusted forces that fight against the most horrendous creatures.
Both the Witcher and Warcraft owe a great deal to the influence of Warhammer and likely, in this case, to the Witch Hunters of Sigmar. While the Witch Hunters would never stand for mutation or magic, they are powerful hunters of evil forces that were born from grueling training, (often fatal), and specialize in hunting down daemonic forces and monsters. The Witcher takes more of a sci-fi approach by adding elements that make the mutation and use of magic seem more probable, while the Demon Hunters are more of a fantasy tribalistic warrior cult. Nonetheless, they all serve very similar purposes, as you have noted, within their own IP.
The first Witcher stories and books were published around the same time as warhammer was starting to get released so im not so sure it was influenced by it.
Sebastian Frisell Some short stories originate to a few years after WHFB issue one, but much of the lore came in about a decade later with the novels. Generally speaking, much of the novelized Witcher lore is about a decade behind Warhammer fluff. Admittedly, much of the subject matter predates both franchises with D&D and Tolkien, and far earlier European lore. However, there are some significant similarities that conveniently cross over, such as the concept of inter-dimensional threat bringing monstrosities into the world, a powerful Holy Roman Empire-inspired Empire, the World's Edge isolating events on a simply named "Continent", which is representative of a Late Medieval/Early Renaissance Europe, with varying social, technological, and military relations with Dwarves, Elves, etc. Of course, the similarities are much looser in The Witcher than in, say, Warcraft. If there was inspiration, it was more generalized.
Just quick note. I thought it would be obvious from the title, but I am strictly discussing the lore strengths of classes. The game is an entirely different thing. Just because a certain class might be good or not good in pvp, that has nothing to do with how strong a class is in the lore. i hav tested it against full pvp paladin, if i had the same lvl gear no chance other classes could win, DK could be the only ones an anti DH class. they were my 1st duels ever nd the pala nd rogue were experienced. also i just joined wow after prepatch release. i had quit for about 1 year
I just started my 1st demon hunter today, and I am very impressed. The combat feels so good, you are so quick and you can easily chain things together. And moving around the world is much easier too. I really like it.
They're relatively more powerful, but we are not the 'heroes' that the class is modeled off (Arthas, Illidan), and there are more drastic tradeoffs in order to be such a class (undeath, fel). In fact that's what even justifies the 'hero class' title IMO - we need to be heroic individuals in order to counteract the intrinsically dangerous and corrupt natures of being an elite undead, or infused fel being. (Which is part of what makes me wonder that a 'Light' based Hero class might even include a concern that the people of such a class are dangerous in their own way; the Light not necessarily being 'perfect' for the world in all ways.) Also, a super, say, rogue, can still be considered stronger than many death knights, to the point where a rogue killing a crowd of death knights, while implausible, is not at all impossible. Class is a guideline, but never a total determinant. Conversely, death knights by lore are designed to have something of an edge over the living, and demon hunters are technically 'living' in a form, and focused on killing fel/demons over all, so it wouldn't be as much of a surprise to me to see a DK kill a DH compared to the opposite. (Or like, a very Light powered Priest or Paladin against a Death Knight.) Hero classes are a boost in clearer ways, but there's good enough reason beyond gameplay why our playable characters can still slaughter crowds of demon hunters or death knights. They're just DH and DK, not OUR 'hero' DH and DKs ;).
You're welcome :). Its just my opinion though. Hero classes are certainly special, but they're designed in the storyline to not be anything like 'godly' classes above all. They just start off at a stronger basis in the expansion they're released in (even monk in MOP was a step down compared to them) and then afterwards are just part of the larger classes tapestry, especially as lore for other classes probably get more elaboration and evolution (stronger mages and magic, more and better rogue tactics, etc etc). After all, technically some titans themselves are like warriors, just of a megapowerful race.
Nah... imagine them more like the Hulk a clock bomb, ready to explode in the face of their allies at any time since they become more demon, that much power get's out of control at some point =/

If DHs are the toughest clan in WoW, then how many wardens were needed to capture and imprison Illidan? Also, if Illidan was already an experienced fighter, you would think that he would have seen the wardens attempt to capture him as a threat - or not - before the actual fight. Thinking along those lines of logic, is it possible - his fighting abilities notwithstanding - that he either misjudged his abilities and/or the warden's abilities which led him to arrogantly charge into the fight without thinking the consequences through to the end? Either way, he was put "on ice" such that he would be here to help fight the Legion when everyone needed him. I wonder what would have happened if Illidan was killed outright - instead of imprisoned - way back then, thus making him and his followers unavailable for the invasion by the Legion into Azeroth? Just a thought.
You didn't actually compare their skills verses other classes though just basically spell casters... There are still many questions like... How are they effected by the arcane energies and the holy light? Can they overpower the Scourge and it's abilities from Death Knights?
lore wise arthas>illidan. deathknights are allready dead they counter magic and of course they dont get tired and feal no pain how they can lose to demonhunters :P

No. They could enslave the demon's essence. But that'd just mean the demon would irritate the piss out of the hunter to attempt to get the hunter to submit control, as usual.
Well, you could discuss the class powers, what each class can actually do in lore, I'm sure that would help out a lot for role players, such as in Druids: Once you said that druids can't cast thunder storms on caves or that warlocks cannot walk around with demons in citys, I would very like to see that for an series ^^
Thank you. I feel like I should have mentioned that a bit more. The lore and the game can be vastly different. In the game there are now a million demon hunters while in the lore they are a very small elite force.
But will the DH be useless after we destroy the Burning Legion? Because after Antorus, there will no longer be a Burning Legion! So what will thei purpose be?

How would they be useless? Basically elite elven warriors empowered by incredibly powerful demonic magic and trained on some of the most dangerous beings in existence.
The wings a Demon Hunter has are the equivalent of a chicken's wings. Chickens can jump high and fall slow. They cannot, however, fly in the actual sense of the word. It would take much bigger and muscular wings than what a DH has in order to maintain flight. Besides, since Illidan is the archetype for Demon Hunters... well. When does Illidan do more than just hover a bit or propel himself forward a bit using his wings? How would it make sense for Illidan's grunts to be capable of flight when he can't himself, despite him being the most powerful of them all?
Gotta disagree here for various reasons: - Mages as example have, as shamans and warlocks, shown to be able to not only destroy small armies of demons but changing the landscape of planets even destroying entire worlds Aegwynn a mage, defeated Sargeras himself and overall the mages in the lore do very well against the Legion. - Deathknights of the third generation (the playable sort) have a hell lot of advantages over demonhunters. Being undead they dont know exhaustion, are not staggered by pain, cant be killed unless destroying their brain, they, due to the magic reanimating them, have supheruman strength, speed and agility, they are the only class being able to wear saronite armor which by lore makes them IMMUNE to any sort of magic and highly resilient against physical attacks, not to mention that they are highly trained veterans of war with the ability to wield rune magic which by lore, has the same capabilities as arcane magic and basicly no limits. And just to mention Arthas beat Illidan so there is the proof ;)
Orkar Isber so? you cant even use her as a example as the guardian has the power of almost all magic types and not just arcane. also she far tougher than any mage by far so that alone isnt a fair comparison.
Jody Boles guardians are mages granted additional power by the mages of the Kirin Tor. its all mage mage mage. And there have been quite some other very accomplished guardians like the first whos staff we are going to wield who fend off almost an entire legion invasion himself. But you could also count in other mages like Khadgar who has more them proven himself to be insanely powerfull or Jaina. Or take Kel Thuzad when he was still allive. Or even in undeath
***** the point is that shamans, mages and warlocks proved to be capable of godlike feats. DKs lorewise can do the very same as them with rune magic + they share all the benefits of undeath. Demonhunters are below all of these guys. sure the average DH is stronger than the average mage, shaman or warlock, but if we take the best DHs, the best DKs, mages, shamans and warlocks, than the DHs loose by FAR
Arthas had an legion empowered ner zul by his side a frostmourne and he was already a strong character . Also they were exactly near the frozen throne . Not actually fair to compare their powers by this fight

" plz ? cuz with the new book and void lords and whats the origins of shadow priests i think they get a huge part in lore and how powerful they are and can be , i know you know this but shadow priest's shadow magic is different than what warlocks use , and also note that void lords and void magic are far greater threat than legion and fel magic
Backstory must contain dead family and loved ones and a desire for vengeance, then you need to stand in Duskwood and tell other RPers how shit they are at fighting demons.
Unfair comparison. Arthas was close to the Frozen Throne, unfair boost number one. Illidan was weakened from fighting through scores of the Scourge, Arthas had a legendary, sentient blade to aid him, unfair advantage number 2. And with all that, Arthas was still losing until Illidan tried pulling a flashy move, giving Arthas a opening. Arthas got lucky, that is all.
Death knights are stronger than demon hunters for various reasons: -They were champions already before they died and were resurrected, so they are already strong fighters by default. -They use Rune magic, one of the strongest forms of magic known in the Warcraft universe. -They have vampiric attacks, so they can quickly heal during battle by actually feeding of other people's blood (in contrast to demon hunters who can only feed on Demonic energies). -They can raise and empower the undead to fight alongside them. -They can spread acid and viral infections to slowly kill their enemies. -They have Runeforging, so a DK's weapon is always stronger than a normal one. -They can jump into the Shadowlands, the realm of the dead. -They can literally grab your soul and pull you to them (Death Grip). When we compare these to the powers of a Demon Hunter, we find that a DH's mobility is countered by the fact that a Death Knight has a lot of ways to engage in melee with him, even if the DH runs away from him. The Death knight can soak a lot of damage by simply striking back at the Demon Hunter, because they can drain his blood in order to sustain themselves or use their own Undead minions as meat shields. Even if the Demon Hunter transforms into his Demonic form, the Death Knight has many ways of resisting damage and incapacitating him.

in lore the greatest demon hunter illidan faught arthas twice, 1st was a draw and 2nd he lost despite having kael thas helping him. in wciii game demonhunter always lost 1v1 vs a orc blademaster. in legion lvl 100 dh are no way near as op as lvl100 dks with the same gear values.
You'd also be pretty shit if you were 100 years old, but spent 95 of those years literally inside a prison without the ability to do anything but pace 9 steps back and forth.
Uhm, thats because they where on taited ground.. it was on Northrend wich means Arthas get the 'lich kings'' power from to become even stronger thats why he won that time..
Not excuses, facts. Illidan was cocky, Arthas had a sentient blade to help him and tainted ground aiding him and Illidan EVEN THEN was fighting toe-to-toe with Arthas until he tried pulling a flashy move because of his cocky attitude. 7 times out of 10 a DH will win.
Could it be possibly for someone to be a deathknight, demon hunter, and warlock at the same time? or at least be a deathknight but have qualities and abilities that are like ones that demon hunters and warlocks use?

Did death knights get some of their power from the lich king? And now that they are semi allied with the lich king again are they as powerful as they once were if not stronger from countless battles
I dont think that LK affect them nearly as much as they are affecting themself. I mean... runeblade grows stronger with each kill just like demon hunter with each demon killed. I think thats why they are heroic classes... because they have unlimited power potential. And stronger is the one who killed more :)
I think it could be possible but it would depend on how experienced the demon hunter is and how strong a pit lord for example would be. If I can recall correctly Illidan did best Magtheridon in the book almost by himself and Magtheridon is a very powerful pit lord.

Well there are only 12 classes available so that probably wouldn't work although I could probably do something with all the other lore classes that are not playable.
Main demon hunter since Legion (I play all classes also though) and I have to say I just enjoy it, may not be the best or the strongest but it is my favorite class to play and very versatile, sometimes it's top tier sometimes not I don't care I just love the class and everyone else should take this in mind: Play the classes you love instead of taking the easiest or more powerful steps, just enjoy
I always thought Illidan used warglaives because they would pretty effective weapons for a BLIND person. All you would have to do is spin around or make wide cuts to do some damage, and since I used to think Illidan couldn't see at all, I just dismissed the weapon's unwieldiness.
Well actually I'd say a sword or even an axe would be a lot more effective if you are just gonna spin around (cough bladestorm cough). I believe their advantage comes from having two blades in one, giving you more options and therefore making you harder to predict and the fact that you can't parry 4 swords coming at your face making a skilled wielder pretty much unmatched in swordplay. Maybe I'm completely off though as I (surprisingly) dont know much about murdering people with swords.

Thinking about the whole DK vs DH situation isn't the death knight going to lose eventually since the demon hunter would always just come back since they are fully immortal?
DH can not revive himself from Twisting Nether without a body to possess like demons. And they also have to pass the borders of Nether into realm of living which also takes effort and to someone is not possible alone.

Demon Hunters are Equal to Death Knights, in my opinion. They are also arguably as powerful as baseline wardens. DKs and DHs are hero classes for a reason. Wardens are also just really strong, especially now that it's confirmed they kind of use arcane.
They are not fragile that is true, but Sargeras did not make the warlock class, Achimonde and Sargeras are the first warlocks we know of and Nehrzul was the first orc legit warlock :)

its hard to pin classes against each other but i personally think mages would be and lore has have been proven to be the most powerful classes in game med and aidwen khadgar ect.. but in terms of demons hunters i feel like classes that have frost like powers that can in a real lore scenario could beat a DH as frost abilitys are a strong way to shut down moments so frost mages frost Dks and shamans who can use water elements demon hunters i would strongly believe could beat down a shadow priest in warcraft lore

Death Knights are constantly, slowly decaying. They're also mentally ill and can't actually feel anything that's being done to them. Demon Hunters have a: height, magic, agility and weight advantage over them.

Death Knights are using blood magic to keep their bodies in check and free from decay and rotting. You even have a book in game about it. They are like vampires, age doesn't mean nothing to them nor their body can fade. They are not mentally ill they are undead. Every emotion is shut down to undead which means they feel no pain, love, happiness, remorse or fear. They utilize power of Unholy, Frost and Blood. A true masterful DK has far more ways to beat Demon Hunter as only one disease can weaken DH but DH can not restore his/her body with Blood magic in mid combat how DK can. They don't need to pound DH to death, they can soak all of damage. DH's are still living beings and they, despite highly enchanted, feel pain and can be slowed by serious injury. While DK can fight with 100% capability without one hand or while being stabbed in chest few times.

You say one disease can weaken them, well so can a eye beam of pure feel energy so what? You have to hit inflict it or it doesn't mean shit. And the meaning 100% is lost on you, Let's say DH removes an arm of a DK, he can now stay in that blind side of the DK because he has no way of grabbing him or attacking him. All and all this is a silly comparison and probably we should ask Nobble who would win because hes a real lore junkie.
What do you think of Demon Hunters RP? I'm seeing so many people being ostracized and mocked for even talking about the potential of demon hunters in roleplay. This is worrying since I plan on maining a demon hunter through legion aswell as RPing with him. I'm hoping this is just the pre-patch demon hunter surge that's causing this.
I don't really see a problem with RP but there is a bit of an issue with the lore. In the lore they are very unique and few in numbers but in the game there are going to be a ton of demon hunters which is kind of ruining their 'uniqueness'

ive played every class, want to be a DH main now. Not too complicated, but fun, engaging gameplay which keeps casual players like me going

It's actually limited to the number of demons in existence available to kill combined with their ability to resist the demon.

In a sense. Although instead of fighting monsters they are fighting an enemy that wants to destroy the entire universe.

There are still many questions like... How are they effected by the arcane energies and the holy light? Can they overpower the Scourge and it's abilities from Death Knights?
This was mainly a test episode. If people do like this I could turn it into a series and go into a bit more detail.

No. They could enslave the demon's essence. But that'd just mean the demon would irritate the piss out of the hunter to attempt to get the hunter to submit control, as usual.
The demon is always fighting for control so nothing would change.

Well, you could discuss the class powers, what each class can actually do in lore, I'm sure that would help out a lot for role players, such as in Druids: Once you said that druids can't cast thunder storms on caves or that warlocks cannot walk around with demons in citys, I would very like to see that for an series ^^

Thank you. I feel like I should have mentioned that a bit more. The lore and the game can be vastly different. In the game there are now a million demon hunters while in the lore they are a very small elite force.

Well, they'll be just like the Deathknights when the Lich King died...sent on standby lorewise and/or "search their place in this world like everybody else", i guess.
How would they be useless? Basically elite elven warriors empowered by incredibly powerful demonic magic and trained on some of the most dangerous beings in existence.

The wings a Demon Hunter has are the equivalent of a chicken's wings. Chickens can jump high and fall slow. They cannot, however, fly in the actual sense of the word.
It would take much bigger and muscular wings than what a DH has in order to maintain flight.
Besides, since Illidan is the archetype for Demon Hunters... well. When does Illidan do more than just hover a bit or propel himself forward a bit using his wings? How would it make sense for Illidan's grunts to be capable of flight when he can't himself, despite him being the most powerful of them all?

You heard it here folks, DoronsMovies himself confirmed that its OK to RP a OP demonhunter, just make sure you don't bite off more then you can chew.
Gotta disagree here for various reasons:
- Mages as example have, as shamans and warlocks, shown to be able to not only destroy small armies of demons but changing the landscape of planets even destroying entire worlds Aegwynn a mage, defeated Sargeras himself and overall the mages in the lore do very well against the Legion.
- Deathknights of the third generation (the playable sort) have a hell lot of advantages over demonhunters. Being undead they dont know exhaustion, are not staggered by pain, cant be killed unless destroying their brain, they, due to the magic reanimating them, have supheruman strength, speed and agility, they are the only class being able to wear saronite armor which by lore makes them IMMUNE to any sort of magic and highly resilient against physical attacks, not to mention that they are highly trained veterans of war with the ability to wield rune magic which by lore, has the same capabilities as arcane magic and basicly no limits.
And just to mention Arthas beat Illidan so there is the proof ;)

Jody Boles guardians are mages granted additional power by the mages of the Kirin Tor. its all mage mage mage. And there have been quite some other very accomplished guardians like the first whos staff we are going to wield who fend off almost an entire legion invasion himself. But you could also count in other mages like Khadgar who has more them proven himself to be insanely powerfull or Jaina. Or take Kel Thuzad when he was still allive. Or even in undeath
***** the point is that shamans, mages and warlocks proved to be capable of godlike feats. DKs lorewise can do the very same as them with rune magic + they share all the benefits of undeath. Demonhunters are below all of these guys. sure the average DH is stronger than the average mage, shaman or warlock, but if we take the best DHs, the best DKs, mages, shamans and warlocks, than the DHs loose by FAR

Unfair comparison. Arthas was close to the Frozen Throne, unfair boost number one. Illidan was weakened from fighting through scores of the Scourge, Arthas had a legendary, sentient blade to aid him, unfair advantage number 2. And with all that, Arthas was still losing until Illidan tried pulling a flashy move, giving Arthas a opening. Arthas got lucky, that is all.

Death knights are stronger than demon hunters for various reasons:
-They were champions already before they died and were resurrected, so they are already strong fighters by default.
-They use Rune magic, one of the strongest forms of magic known in the Warcraft universe.
-They have vampiric attacks, so they can quickly heal during battle by actually feeding of other people's blood (in contrast to demon hunters who can only feed on Demonic energies).
-They can raise and empower the undead to fight alongside them.
-They can spread acid and viral infections to slowly kill their enemies.
-They have Runeforging, so a DK's weapon is always stronger than a normal one.
-They can jump into the Shadowlands, the realm of the dead.
-They can literally grab your soul and pull you to them (Death Grip).
When we compare these to the powers of a Demon Hunter, we find that a DH's mobility is countered by the fact that a Death Knight has a lot of ways to engage in melee with him, even if the DH runs away from him. The Death knight can soak a lot of damage by simply striking back at the Demon Hunter, because they can drain his blood in order to sustain themselves or use their own Undead minions as meat shields. Even if the Demon Hunter transforms into his Demonic form, the Death Knight has many ways of resisting damage and incapacitating him.
cool story.. I can say the same, DH has many ways to resist DK DMG and murder them with fell empowered skills....

in lore the greatest demon hunter illidan faught arthas twice, 1st was a draw and 2nd he lost despite having kael thas helping him.
in wciii game demonhunter always lost 1v1 vs a orc blademaster.
in legion lvl 100 dh are no way near as op as lvl100 dks with the same gear values.
I'd say the death knights are the strongest class in WoW.

I dont think that LK affect them nearly as much as they are affecting themself.
I mean... runeblade grows stronger with each kill just like demon hunter with each demon killed. I think thats why they are heroic classes... because they have unlimited power potential. And stronger is the one who killed more :)

I think it could be possible but it would depend on how experienced the demon hunter is and how strong a pit lord for example would be. If I can recall correctly Illidan did best Magtheridon in the book almost by himself and Magtheridon is a very powerful pit lord.
even if some DH are tied to the twisting nether, wouldn't killing them separate them from their inner demon? wouldn't it free the demon?

Main demon hunter since Legion (I play all classes also though) and I have to say I just enjoy it, may not be the best or the strongest but it is my favorite class to play and very versatile, sometimes it's top tier sometimes not I don't care I just love the class and everyone else should take this in mind: Play the classes you love instead of taking the easiest or more powerful steps, just enjoy
I always thought Illidan used warglaives because they would pretty effective weapons for a BLIND person. All you would have to do is spin around or make wide cuts to do some damage, and since I used to think Illidan couldn't see at all, I just dismissed the weapon's unwieldiness.
Well actually I'd say a sword or even an axe would be a lot more effective if you are just gonna spin around (cough bladestorm cough). I believe their advantage comes from having two blades in one, giving you more options and therefore making you harder to predict and the fact that you can't parry 4 swords coming at your face making a skilled wielder pretty much unmatched in swordplay. Maybe I'm completely off though as I (surprisingly) dont know much about murdering people with swords.

DH can not revive himself from Twisting Nether without a body to possess like demons. And they also have to pass the borders of Nether into realm of living which also takes effort and to someone is not possible alone.
The first ever demon hunter was Illidan who got his ass whooped by Arthas himself a million times.

Demon Hunters are Equal to Death Knights, in my opinion. They are also arguably as powerful as baseline wardens. DKs and DHs are hero classes for a reason. Wardens are also just really strong, especially now that it's confirmed they kind of use arcane.

They are not fragile that is true, but Sargeras did not make the warlock class, Achimonde and Sargeras are the first warlocks we know of and Nehrzul was the first orc legit warlock :)
I think the two strongest classes lorewise are Demon Hunters and Death Knights and the second strongest class is the warlock

its hard to pin classes against each other but i personally think mages would be and lore has have been proven to be the most powerful classes in game med and aidwen khadgar ect.. but in terms of demons hunters i feel like classes that have frost like powers that can in a real lore scenario could beat a DH as frost abilitys are a strong way to shut down moments so frost mages frost Dks and shamans who can use water elements demon hunters i would strongly believe could beat down a shadow priest in warcraft lore

Death Knights are constantly, slowly decaying. They're also mentally ill and can't actually feel anything that's being done to them. Demon Hunters have a: height, magic, agility and weight advantage over them.

Death Knights are using blood magic to keep their bodies in check and free from decay and rotting. You even have a book in game about it. They are like vampires, age doesn't mean nothing to them nor their body can fade. They are not mentally ill they are undead. Every emotion is shut down to undead which means they feel no pain, love, happiness, remorse or fear. They utilize power of Unholy, Frost and Blood. A true masterful DK has far more ways to beat Demon Hunter as only one disease can weaken DH but DH can not restore his/her body with Blood magic in mid combat how DK can. They don't need to pound DH to death, they can soak all of damage. DH's are still living beings and they, despite highly enchanted, feel pain and can be slowed by serious injury. While DK can fight with 100% capability without one hand or while being stabbed in chest few times.

What do you think of Demon Hunters RP? I'm seeing so many people being ostracized and mocked for even talking about the potential of demon hunters in roleplay. This is worrying since I plan on maining a demon hunter through legion aswell as RPing with him. I'm hoping this is just the pre-patch demon hunter surge that's causing this.
I don't really see a problem with RP but there is a bit of an issue with the lore. In the lore they are very unique and few in numbers but in the game there are going to be a ton of demon hunters which is kind of ruining their 'uniqueness'
I was thinking the same. I expect far fewer demon hunters when Legion launches considering the commitment you need to make to an artifact and a main.
A lot of players will change mains and abandon their first classes.
